Abstract Macromolecular substances in traditional Chinese medicine injections (TCMIs) are expected to be a main dangerous factor causing anaphylactic or anaphylactoid reaction. The main aim of the study was to verify the macromolecular substances’ anaphylactic or anaphylactoid reaction in guinea pigs and establish a size-exclusive chromatographic method to detect them. The macromolecular substances from six TCMIs (Danshen injection, Dengzhanxixin injection, Honghua injection, Qingkailing injection, Shuanghuanglian injection and Shuxuening injection) were prepared by removing substances with molecular weight less than 10 kDa with an ultra-filter. The anaphylactic and anaphylactoid reactions caused by original TCMIs, injections rich in or free of macromolecules were assayed in guinea pigs. The relationship between the amount of the macromolecular substances and peak area of chromatogram was established by size-exclusive chromatography. Injections free of macromolecules were not likely to cause anaphylactic and anaphylactoid reactions, but injections rich in macromolecular substances were more likely to do so. If the macromolecular substances with molecular weight bigger than 10 kDa were removed, the signal of macromolecular substances in TCMIs was quantitatively reduced. All the results suggested that macromolecular substances in TCMIs are a dangerous factor causing safety problems, and the macromolecular substances can be quantitatively detected with size-exclusive chromatography.

: Mitophagy plays an important role in maintaining mitochondrial quality and cell homeostasis through the degradation of damaged, aged, and dysfunctional mitochondria and misfolded proteins. Many human diseases, particularly neurodegenerative diseases, are related to disorders of mitochondrial phagocytosis. Exploring the regulatory mechanisms of mitophagy is of great significance for revealing the molecular mechanisms underlying the related diseases. Herein, we summarize the major mechanisms of mitophagy, the relationship of mitophagy with human diseases, and the role of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in mitophagy. These discussions enhance our knowledge of mitophagy and its potential therapeutic targets using TCM.

At present, there is no consistent understanding of the effect of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) prescription in the prevention of the deep vein thrombosis (DVT), though TCM has been widely used in China. To evaluate the efficacy of TCM prescription combined with low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) for preventing DVT after major orthopedics surgery. All the retrieved articles were evaluated using specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. Then, data were extracted and evaluated for inclusion in a randomized controlled trial. In this study, variables included relative risk (RR), mean difference (MD), and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). Overall, 16 articles were included with 1538 patients, 768 in the combination group (combination of TCM prescription and LMWH) and 770 in the LMWH group. The results indicated that in the combination group, the incidence of DVT (RR: 0.34, 95% CI: 0.23-0.50, P < .00001) and d-dimer levels (standardized mean difference: −1.19, 95% CI: −1.80 to −0.58, P = .0001) was significantly lower than that in the LMWH group. Furthermore, the combination treatment obviously decreased the concentration of fibrinogen (MD: −1.19, 95% CI: −2.13 to −0.25, P = .01). The combination of TCM prescription and LMWH could significantly reduce the incidence of DVT, suggesting that it may be a more effective prophylaxis measure for DVT after major orthopedics surgery.

The essence of the traditional Chinese medicine has always been the most advanced and experienced therapeutic approach in the world. It has knowledge that can impact the direction of future modern medical development; still, it is easy to find simple knowledge with mark of times and special cultures. The basic structure of traditional Chinese medicine is composed of three parts: one consistent with modern medicine, one involuntarily beyond modern medicine, and one that needs to be further evaluated. The part that is consistent with modern medicine includes consensus on several theories and concepts of traditional Chinese medicine, and usage of several treatments and prescriptions of traditional Chinese medicine including commonly used Chinese herbs. The part that is involuntarily beyond modern medicine contains several advanced theories and important concepts of traditional Chinese medicine, relatively advanced treatments, formula and modern prescriptions, leading herbs, acupuncture treatment and acupuncture anesthesia of traditional Chinese medicine that affect modern medicine and incorporates massage treatment that has been gradually acknowledged by modern therapy. The part that needs to be further evaluated consists not only the knowledge of pulse diagnosis, prescription, and herbs, but also many other aspects of traditional Chinese medicine.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a worldwide refractory bowel disease with unclear pathogenesis. Its lesions can lead to colorectal cancer over time. UC is classified as “diarrhea,” “dysentery,” and other categories in traditional Chinese medicine. Its etiology and pathogenesis in traditional Chinese medicine are complex, but it has been found that blood stasis plays an important role in its occurrence and development. Combined with modern research, the relationship between blood stasis and ulcerative colitis is analyzed in this article along with a discussion on the therapeutic effect of activating blood and removing blood stasis on the disease, aiming to provide new ideas for the treatment of UC.
