Bertram Dillon Steele was born on May 30, 1870, at Plymouth, where he spent his boyhood and attended the Grammar School. It was a tradition in the family that they were the descendants of a member of the outlawed Macgregor clan who, early in the 17th century, had taken the name of Steele and migrated southwards. Be that as it may, several members of the family had attained professional success in the Church, the Law or the Army, and Bertram was the third of his race to achieve the position of a University professor. Emigrating as a youth to Australia, he at first studied Pharmacy, intending to take it up as a business; but in his first year as a student in the University of Melbourne he found that his true bent was for Science and especially for Chemistry.

This is a study of the trajectory of a Jewish converso who had a brilliant career at the University of Mexico in the 16th century: he received degrees from the faculties of arts, theology and law and was a professor for more than 28 years. He gained prestige and earned the respect of his fellow citizens, participated in monarchical politics and was an active member of his society, becoming the elected bishop of Guatemala. However, when he tried to become a judge of the Inquisition, a thorough investigation revealed his Jewish ancestry back in the Iberian Peninsula, causing his career to come to a halt. Further inquiry revealed that his grandmother had been burned by the Inquisition and accused of being a Judaizer around 1481; his nephews and nieces managed, in 1625, to obtain a letter from the Inquisition vouching for the “cleanliness of blood” of the family. Furthermore, the nephews founded an entailed estate in Oaxaca and forbade the heir of the entail to marry into the Jewish community. The university was a factor that facilitated their integration, but the Inquisition reminded them of its limits. The nephews denied their ancestors and became part of the society of New Spain. We have here a well-documented case that represents the possible existence of many others.

17th century testaments of the Królik family from Krakow The article is dedicated to the Królik family from Krakow, who lived in the town from the late 16th century until the first years of the 18th century. The family members initially worked as tailors, later reinforcing the group of Krakow merchants in the third generation (Maciej Królik). Wojciech Królik – from the fourth generation – was a miner in Olkusz. The text omits the most distinguished member of the family, Wojciech’s oldest brother, the Krakow councillor Mikołaj Królik, whose figure has been covered in a separate work. The work shows the complicated religious relations in the family of non-Catholics, initially highly engaged in the life of the Krakow Congregation, but whose members gradually converted from Evangelism to Catholicism. As a result, Wojciech Królik and his siblings became Catholics. This work is complemented by four testaments of family members, with the first, Jakub Królik’s, being written in 1626 and the last one, Wojciech Królik’s, written in 1691.

David Gwynne Evans was born in Atherton, near Manchester, on 6 September 1909 of Welsh parents; his father, a schoolmaster, was from Pembrokeshire and his mother from Bangor, North Wales. He was the third of four children in a distinguished family. His older brother, Meredith Gwynne, became Professor of Physical Chemistry in Leeds and later in Manchester and was a Fellow of the Royal Society. His sister, Lynette Gwynne, took a degree in modern languages at Manchester University and taught in girls’ high schools. His younger brother, Alwyn Gwynne, after holding a lectureship in Manchester University was appointed to the Chair of Physical Chemistry in Cardiff University. David left Leigh Grammar School in 1928 at the age of 18 years and worked for two years in a junior capacity for the British Cotton Growers’ Association at the Manchester Cotton Exchange. However, when Alwyn went up to Manchester University in 1931, David decided to go with him and both graduated B.Sc. in physics and chemistry three years later and M .S c. after a further year. At this time Professor Maitland in the Department of Bacteriology wanted a chemist to help in the public health laboratory which was run by his department. Professor Lapworth recommended David for the post and thus David entered the field of bacteriology and immunology, to which he was to contribute so much. He was appointed Demonstrator and soon afterwards Assistant Lecturer in the University Department. During these early years he worked with Professor Maitland on the toxins of Haemophilus pertussis (now Bordetella pertussis ) and related organisms, work that provided a sound basis for his subsequent interest in whooping cough immunization and later for his abiding interest in vaccination against other diseases and in the standardization of vaccines and antisera.

The Lords Petre were always one of the most prominent of English Catholic families, and they were also one of the richest. Their landed estates had been built up in the middle of the sixteenth century by Sir William Petre, Secretary of State to three Tudor sovereigns. Sir William's son, John, was created a Baron in 1611, but in the early 17th century the family properties ceased to grow in size, partly because Catholicism excluded them from the profits of office, and partly because provision for younger sons offset such new acquisitions as were made. But even so the estates inherited by the third Lord Petre in 1637 were large enough to place him clearly in the ranks of the great landed magnates. In Essex he had a well-consolidated belt of land lying to the west and south-west of Chelmsford, and centred on the two family residences of Ingatestone Hall and Thorndon Hall. Altogether in Essex Petre had about 11,000 acres of freehold land and the lordship of seventeen manors, and these produced some £5,500 per annum or considerably more than half his total income from land. In addition he had a large estate on the opposite side of the country, in Devon. This lay in two distinct areas, one centred on Axminster and extending down the Axe valley and its tributaries, and the other in the southerly projection of the county on the southern edge of Dartmoor, where the principal possession was the vast moorland manor of South Brent. Besides the main estates in Essex and Devon, there were some isolated properties: the manor of Osmington down on the Dorset coast; Toddenham and Sutton in Gloucestershire; Kennett and Kentford on the Cambridgeshire-Suffolk border.

Frank Ewart Smith was born on 31 May 1897 at Loughton in Essex, where his father was a pharmaceutical chemist and optician, but shortly afterwards the family moved to Hastings. He was educated privately until he went to Uckfield Grammar School in 1906. At twelve, he won an open scholarship to Christ’s Hospital and entered the ‘Classical Side’ because the ‘Modern Side’ did not sit for University Scholarships. He studied French, Latin and Greek in addition to chemistry and physics until he reached the sixth form when he became a ‘Science Grecian’. He always spoke very highly of the science masters who taught by the Heuristic System set up by Professor H.E. Armstrong, F.R.S., who was a Governor of the School. Pupils were trained to find out for themselves and Smith followed this philosophy throughout his life. In 1915 he won a scholarship in maths, physics and chemistry to Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, and left school in 1916 to join the Royal Horse Artillery as an officer cadet. When commissioned, he was transferred to a Heavy Battery of the Royal Garrison Artillery (horsedrawn ‘60 pounders’). He served at the battle of Messines and the third battle of Ypres, being Mentioned in Despatches. He then became the Assistant Adjutant of the 48th Brigade Royal Garrison Artillery until he went up to Cambridge in May 1919 to read for the Mechanical Science Tripos, gaining First Class Honours after only seven terms.

This article maintained that the historicity of Jesus’ baptism was intended to flesh out the righteousness of God that was well-documented in the Hebrew Scriptures. Furthermore, the historical event initiated the ontological emphasis on the relationship of baptism to righteousness. To support this proposal, this article focused on Matthew’s fulfilment statement in Matthew 3:15. Looking specifically at this verse within its context, the article examines what Matthew may have intended for his community to grasp regarding the Christian tradition of righteousness. The article is divided into four sections that are intended to examine Matthew’s intentions. Firstly, the immediate context is examined, showing the influences and setting for the fulfilment statement. The following section explores the fulfilment statement within this context. The third section uncovers some of the theological traditions in Paul and the church fathers. Finally, the baptismal statement of Matthew 3:15 will be tied directly to the relationship of the law and righteousness in Matthew’s ἦλθον statement of Matthew 5:17. Hierdie artikel betoog dat die historiese waarheid van Jesus se doop bedoel was om die geregtigheid van God, wat volledig uiteengesit is in die Hebreeuse Bybel, te versterk. Verder het die historiese gebeurtenis die ontologiese klem op die verhouding van die doop tot geregtigheid geïnisieer. Om hierdie voorstel te ondersteun, fokus hierdie artikel op Matteus se verklaring van verwesenliking (Mat 3:15). Deur spesifiek na hierdie vers binne sy konteks te kyk, ondersoek die artikel wat Matteus moontlik beplan het sodat sy gemeenskap die Christelike tradisie van geregtigheid kon begryp. Frederick Maurice Rowe, Professor in the Department of Colour Chemistry and Dyeing at the University of Leeds, died on the 8 December 1946, at the age of fifty-five. He was born on 11 February 1891 at Stroud in Gloucestershire where his father, H. J. Rowe, was engaged in business as a coal merchant and dealer in builders’ materials, under the name of Wood and Rowe. From 1901 to 1908 he attended Marling School, Stroud, and always retained for it a strong attachment for which there were solid grounds. The school, founded and endowed in 1887 by Sir Samuel Marling, a prominent figure in the West of England cloth trade in that part of Gloucestershire, had attracted the attention of the Worshipful Company of Cloth workers by whose efforts a Department of Dyeing had been established at the Yorkshire College, Leeds. The Company decided to provide funds for an annual leaving scholarship to help a Marling School boy to proceed to Leeds for two years’ technological training in textile dyeing at the College. Similar provision was made at Cheltenham Grammar School and in consequence there were unusual opportunities for boys from Gloucestershire to go north for scientific and technical training whilst becoming familiar with another district famous for its woollen industry. On his mother’s side Rowe was descended from a family of Huguenots who fled from France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 and settled in Gloucestershire to practise their craft of woollen manufacture with which some members of the family continued to maintain a connexion. This circumstance and the Cotswold environment may have helped to direct Rowe’s choice of a career, but a love for chemistry was awakened in him by one of the masters at the school, Bartlett, whose influence in after years he frequently acknowledged with gratitude.

Francis Edgar Jones was born on 16 January 1914 in Wolverhampton. His father, the son of a miner, was educated at the Rugby Grammar School and a teachers’ training college, and became a teacher in 1898. He met Frank’s mother, whose family name was Franks, while teaching at Barnet. Early in the 1900s they moved north to Wolverhampton and remained there until they moved again to Dagenham in 1921. Frank was the third born in a family of two boys and two girls. At the age of just under five he was sent to the Church of England Primary School at Heathdown, Wolverhampton, where the discipline was strict. Frank had a vivid recollection of life at the school: ‘When we arrived at a quarter to nine, we first had to place our hands on the desk in front, palms face down, to see that we had clean nails. Next we had to stand on the form to have our boots inspected to make sure they were clean. After prayers, school began and our reward for a good week’s work was to be allowed to work with raffia - of different colours - on Friday afternoons.’

Modern seniors who are characterized by good health at the end of their professional activity engage in new forms of activity. Some of them are involved in the activities of universities of the third age, belong to the Family of Radio Maryja, are volunteers or use various forms of religious tourism and pilgrimages. Many manifestations of their activity come from the religiosity of seniors. The growing religiosity of seniors requires a systematic catechesis that helps them in its development. The church emphasizes that this catechesis should be adapted to the situation of a senior. Catechesis helps to read the religious meaning of this stage of life and to strengthen the motivation for Christian presence in the family and environment. Therefore, this catechesis should strengthen religious interest in faith, shape and sustain the motivation of Christian activity, in the Church and in the world. This is reflected in the Christian involvement in family upbringing, in the ecclesial community, for the social good and also in an attractive way of spending free time.
