AbstractThe association between indirect environmental cues that modulate insect diapause and the actual stressors is by no means granted when a species encounters new environments. The box tree moth, Cydalima perspectalis, is an Asian pest whose rapid invasion in Europe cause considerable economic and ecological impacts. Larvae enter a winter diapause induced by photoperiod in both native and invaded ranges, but factors that trigger the return to an active phase are still unknown. Yet, identifying them is crucial to understand how diapause end synchronizes with the end of the winter stress encountered in Europe. To test whether activity resumption is regulated by thermal and/or photoperiodic thresholds, or additive effects between these factors often involved in diapause termination, diapausing caterpillars from an invaded area were exposed to crossed treatments at the laboratory. The evolution of diapause rate was monitored over time and compared to that of nearby field sites invaded. A strong positive effect of increasing temperature was found on the rate and dynamics of diapause termination, whereas no compelling effect of photoperiod appeared. Resuming development directly when main stressors fade, not in response to indirect photoperiodic cues that could be mismatched outside native areas, likely contributes to the good match observed between diapause and the new climates this pest encountered in the invaded range.

We empirically test whether B Corp certification affects the short- and medium-term growth rates of sustainable enterprises. These businesses are growing in popularity and prevalence but, due to their hybrid nature, often suffer from external credibility issues and competing internal logics. Because of the rigorous and time-involving audit procedure, B Corp certification potentially sends a credible signal about the sustainable nature of the enterprise to its stakeholders. In addition, the B Corp label could help to straighten out internal tensions and align the company towards its dual purpose. Hence, B Corp certification could contribute to company success. We observe 129 firms that were certified between 2013 and 2018 over a period between six years prior and five years post-certification. Using propensity score matching, we identify 129 non-certified matching companies. On this sample, we conduct a difference-in-differences panel regression analysis to investigate the effect of certification. Our dataset allows us to study how the effects of B Corp certification evolve over time, which was previously untested. Our study documents a positive effect of B Corp certification on turnover growth and also that this effect increases with the time since certification, implying that certification requires some time for its full effect to become apparent.

Development of calves depends on prenatal and postnatal conditions. Primiparous cows were still maturing during pregnancy, which can lead to negative intrauterine conditions and affect the calf’s metabolism. It is hypothesized that weaning calves at higher maturity has positive effects due to reduced metabolic stress. We aimed to evaluate effects of mothers’ parity and calves’ weaning age on growth performance and blood metabolites. Fifty-nine female Holstein calves (38.8 ± 5.3 kg birth weight, about 8 days old) were used in a 2 × 2 factorial experiment with factors weaning age (7 vs. 17 weeks) and parity of mother (primiparous vs. multiparous cows). Calves were randomly assigned one of these four groups. Live weight, live weight gain and morphometry increased over time and were greater in calves weaned later. Metabolic indicators except total protein were interactively affected by time and weaning age. Leptin remained low in early-weaned calves born to primiparous cows, while it increased in the other groups. The results suggest that weaning more mature calves has a positive effect on body growth, and calves born to primiparous cows particularly benefit from this weaning regimen. It also enables a smooth transition from liquid to solid feed, which might reduce the associated stress of weaning.

This study distinguishes different patterns of friendship quality in terms of support from and conflict with friends, and reciprocity. Associations between friendship patterns and adolescents' adjustment (self-perception, expectations for the future, depressive feelings, sense of alienation, lying, disobedience, and aggression) were hypothesized to be moderated by family stress and friendship reciprocity. The sample comprised 622 adolescents of both genders, aged 14 to 20 years. We administered a questionnaire, including the Friendship Quality Scale and a peer nomination, twice at a 6-month interval. We identified two patterns of stable friendships: high (47%) and low (37%) quality. In two other groups, friendship quality changed over time, either from low to high (7%), or from high to low (9%). Of all adolescents, 58% had reciprocal and stable friends and 42% had unilateral friends. Under conditions of high family stress, supportive friendships do not have a positive effect on expectations for success and sense of alienation. Reciprocal friendship promotes higher levels of lying and disobedience but also protects against aggression. Summarizing, the effects of friendship quality can be moderated, either diminishing or exacerbating it, by other context factors.

The aim of our study was to find out the effect of our proposed treatment and prevention complex, which included oral administration of «Kvertulin» complex drug, «Imupret» drops, «Pikovit» multivitamin drug and «Exodent» local irrigation of the oral cavity with a solution of tooth elixir that influence on the rate of salivation and viscosity of oral fluid in children with chronic catarrhal gingivitis and diabetes mellitus.The treatment and prophylactic measures had positive effect on the homeostasis of the oral cavity, which assisted to reduce the viscosity of the oral fluid, increase the rate of salivation, as evidenced by observation of patients for 6 months. The treatment and prevention complex are recommended to use 2 times a year, as the studied indicators deteriorate over time.

Objectives To examine whether childhood disadvantage is associated with later-life functional status and identify mediating factors. Methods Unique and additive effects of five childhood domains on functional status were assessed at baseline (2006) and over time (2006–2016) in a sample of 13,894 adults from the Health and Retirement Study (>50 years). Adult health behaviors and socioeconomic status (SES) were tested as mediators. Results Respondents exposed to multiple childhood disadvantages (OR = .694) as well as low childhood SES (OR = .615), chronic diseases (OR = .694), impairments (OR = .599), and risky adolescent behaviors (OR = .608) were less likely to be free of functional disability by baseline. Over time, these unique and additive effects of childhood disadvantage increased the hazard odds of eventually developing functional disability (e.g., additive effect: hOR = 1.261). Adult health behaviors and SES mediated some of these effects. Discussion Given the enduring effects of childhood disadvantage, policies to promote healthy aging should reduce exposure to childhood disadvantage.

Heavy metal pollution has adversely affected the ecological environment. As an eco-friendly and renewable material, biochar has a positive effect on environmental restoration. For study the feasibility of removing lead using corn straw biochar, the adsorption characteristics and mechanism were studied. This work prepared corn straw biochar at 300 °C, and its surface properties were characterized. The adsorption kinetics, isotherm, thermodynamics were determined. The result indicated the mechanism belonged ion exchange and complexation, and the experiment were controlled by comprehensive process, which included reaction rate and diffusion. The Langmuir model had better fitting results for the adsorption data, which indicated that adsorption was chemical adsorption and single molecular layer adsorption, and the maximum adsorption amount of corn straw biochar at 25 °C, 35 °C and 45 °C were 81.63 mg/g, 83.89 mg/g and 89.21 mg/g respectively. The thermodynamic analysis showed that increasing temperature was helpful to adsorption, and the adsorption was spontaneous. The results can be used for comprehensive utilization of straw and treatment of lead pollution.

Temporal dynamics in business-to-business (B2B) relationships are the evolution of B2B relationship stages. This study offers new insights in examining the impact of the temporal dynamics on firm performance during the B2B relationship stages. Drawing on B2B stage models, social exchange theory and the evolution of trust, the results show that the link between trust and firm performance weakens when a relationship between two parties reaches a particular stage. trust has a positive effect on firm performance in the same period; however, this positive effect decreases over time. Thus, the impact of trust on firm performance is insignificant in subsequent relationship stages in the start-up context. The impact of trust on firm performance is unstable and decreases over time. This study offers new theoretical and managerial insights regarding the temporal dynamics in B2B relationships.

Abstract The influence of registries in medicine is large. However, there has been no systematic assessment conducted to quantify the impact of benchmarking with registries focused on cardiothoracic surgery. Numerous publications conclude that registry participation leads to improvement of outcomes for patients. A large number of registries provide evidence sub-structured by statistics that show decreases in morbidity and mortality in the participants’ clinical units. Many authors praise the benchmarking method making use of databases of registries as having a positive effect on outcome of care. However, studies proving the direct causal relation between the use of cardiothoracic surgery-oriented registries and improvement of clinical in-hospital outcomes are extremely scarce. We aimed to analyse the causal relation between the use of cardiothoracic surgery-oriented registries and improvement of clinical outcomes. In a systematic literature review, publications demonstrating the use of registry data to obtain consolidated quality improvements were selected. After analysis of 2990 scientific publications, 6 studies filled the inclusion criteria. The selected studies acknowledged that benchmarking of data against registries was used for a focused and methodologically organized improvement in cardiothoracic departments. In conjunction with the impact of the applied methods on healthcare, their results demonstrate quantifiable enhanced local outcomes over time.

AbstractThe seasonal effects of heat load and photoperiod on yield and composition of milk from primiparous cows in the course of lactation were studied using test day records from 8968 primiparous cows on 76 farms in Georgia, collected from 1990 through 1997. The effect of prepartum photoperiod on milk production in the subsequent lactation of these cows was also evaluated. These estimated seasonal effects were compared with those estimated for 4728 primiparous cows on 13 farms, and for 1538 multiparous cows on three farms during consecutive lactations in Israel from 1994 through 1996. During lactation, the day length had a positive effect on milk yield and negative effects on fat and protein concentrations in the milk, but the daily change in day length had positive effects on milk yield and fat concentration, and a smaller positive effect on protein concentration. The day length during the prepartum period had negative effects on milk yield and fat and protein concentrations. The heat load during lactation had negative effects on milk yield and fat and protein concentrations. Most of the effects were highly (P < 0·001) significant. There was a very good match between the results obtained for primiparous cows in Georgia and Israel, for the combined effects of heat load and photoperiod during lactation on milk yield and protein and fat concentrations. The match between primiparous and multiparous cows in Israel was better for milk yield and protein concentration than for fat concentration. The estimated effects of pre-partum photoperiod were higher for multiparous cows in Israel than for primiparous cows in either country.
