AbstractGlobally, Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) are the major killer diseases, majority of which are attributable to common risk factors like smoking, alcohol intake, physical inactivity and low fruits/vegetable consumption. Clustering of these risk factors increases the risk of developing NCDs. The occurrence of NCDs among women is alarmingly high, and this invites impact on upcoming generation too. So, this study aimed to assess the prevalence and clustering of selected risk factors and their socio-demographic determinants in Nepalese women using Nepal Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) 2016 data.NDHS applied stratified multi-stage cluster sampling to reach to the individual respondent for representing the whole nation. This study included analysis of data of 6,396 women of age 15 to 49 years. Chi-square test for bivariate analysis and multiple poisson regression to calculate adjusted prevalence ratio was applied.A total of 8.91% participants were current smoker. Similarly, 22.19% and 11.45% of participants were overweight and hypertensive respectively. Around 6.02% of participants had a co-occurrence of two NCDs risk factors. Smoking, overweight and hypertension were significantly associated with age, education, province, wealth index and ethnicity. Risk factors were more likely to cluster in women aged 40-49 years (APR=2.95, CI: 2.58-3.38), widow/separated (APR=3.09, CI: 2.24-4.28) and Dalit) (APR=1.34, CI: 1.17-1.55).This study found that NCD risk factors were disproportionately distributed by age, education, socio-economic status and ethnicity and clustered in more vulnerable groups such as widow/separated, Dalit and Janajati.

Abstract Background Refugees are highly vulnerable to many health-related risks. Monitoring non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is of overriding importance in these populations. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of risk factors for NCDs amongst Afghan refugees in a refugee camp located in southern Iran. Methods This cross-sectional sturdy was conducted in 2018. Risk factors such as inadequate nutrition, physical inactivity, tobacco smoking, obesity and overweight, hypertension (HTN), elevated fasting plasma glucose (FPG), and dyslipidaemia were assessed. Data were gathered with a modified WHO STEPS procedure. Prevalence and age-standardized prevalence and their 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated. Results The estimated prevalence were 94% for inadequate fruit/vegetable consumption, 18% for physical inactivity, 9% for tobacco smoking, 3% for FPG, 20% for HTN, 51% for central obesity, 24% for overweight, 19% for obesity, and 69% for dyslipidaemia. Conclusions Except for inadequate fruit and vegetable intake and dyslipidaemia, the prevalence of other NCD risk factors was low among Afghan refugees in Iran. Raising awareness about healthy diet and its importance and the provision of more affordable fruit and vegetables are two effective measures toward improving the health of refugees in Iran.

Abstract Background There is scanty information regarding sex or gender differences in health-related habits, NCD risk factors, and prevalence of NCDs in Botswana. The purpose of this study is to assess the influence of gender differences on health-related habits, weight status, common NCD risk factors, and on the prevalence of non-communicable diseases. Methods A cross-sectional, population-based survey called the Botswana STEPS Survey II which was conducted in 2014 based on people aged 15–64 years. The survey used a multi-stage cluster sampling methodology to arrive at nationally representative sample. As such during analysis of data, a complex sample module from SPSS was adopted to account for the multiple stages of sampling. The predicted probabilities of outcome variables were derived by controlling the covariates. A total sample size of 2947 participants aged 25–64 years were used in this study. Results The study results showed that a statistically significant high predicted percentage of men compared to women smoked tobacco (34.4%, 95% CI: 33.5–35.1 vs. 4.4%, 95% CI: 4.3–4.5). Men were also consistently engaging in heavy alcohol use and low consumption of fruit and/or vegetables, and these differences were statistically significant. On the other, physical inactivity among women was higher than men. Controlling other covariates, a higher predicted probability of women than men were overweight (28.7%, 95% CI: 28.6–28.8 vs. 18.3%, 95% CI: 18.0-18.6) and obese (25.8%, 95% CI: 25.4–26.2 vs. 10.2%, 95% CI: 9.9–10.5). Women are at the greater risk of developing NCDs compared to men since the adjusted prevalence of at least 3 common risk factors were more among women than men. A higher adjusted predicted prevalence of women than men suffered from hypertension (39.4%, 95% CI: 38.9–40.0 vs. 26.1%, 95% CI: 25.5–26.8). Conclusions Overall, the study observed that there were gender differences in health-related habits, malnutrition, NCD risk factors and NCD prevalence. Appropriate policies and programmes need to be adopted in order to urgently address the problem of NCDs.

Abstract Objectives In Bangladesh, the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCD) and their risk factors is increasing. We wanted to assess the vulnerability of women by analyzing the differences in risk factors by gender. Methods Between February to May 2018, we carried out a cross-sectional survey to determine the baseline status of the NCD risk factors and prevalence of hypertension and diabetes among >30 years old men and women in selected intervention and control sites in the rural and urban areas of an NCD project in Bangladesh. We interviewed 2464 men (1268 in rural and 1196 in urban areas) and 2466 women (1273 in rural and 1193 in urban areas) and administered blood pressure and anthropometric assessment using the World Health Organization STEPS questionnaire and standard operating procedures. We carried out descriptive analysis using STATA 13.0. Results Ninety seven % of men were married at the time of interview but 22% of women were widowed. Prevalence of inadequate fruits and vegetable consumption (77% vs 65%), lack of physical activity (78% vs 59%), overweight and obesity (37% vs 18%), high waist circumference (31% vs 5%), hypertension (28% vs 24%), uncontrolled hypertension after medication (44% vs 63%), self-reported diabetes (11% vs 9%) was higher among women than men. Treatment seeking from a doctor for hypertension (76% vs 73%), intake of anti-diabetic drugs (94% vs 89%) was lower among women than men. Conclusions In Bangladesh, the prevalence of selected behavioral and clinical risk factors was higher among women than men. Treatment seeking behavior is slightly better among men than the women. The government should take the vulnerability of women into account while designing and implementing programs to prevent and control NCD in Bangladesh. Background: Prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is alarmingly increasing along with a rise in population especially in rural India. The objectives of this study are to find out prevalence as well as awareness of NCDs among the rural populations.Methods: This community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in six rural area of Panvel Taluka. One –stage cluster sampling technique was used to recruit participants from each cluster. WHO STEPS questionnaire tool (STEP I and II) was used to measure NCDs risk factors. Face validated pre-designed questionnaire was used to assess participant’s awareness, attitude, and behavior towards NCDs. The target population was classified into different age groups and gender. Data were analyzed using SPSS Software and a descriptive statistics were applied.Results: A total of 483 males and 417 females participated in this study. Among males, 34.8% consumed smoked tobacco whereas 21.8% of females consumed smokeless tobacco. Only 9.32% of male participants were reported as current alcohol drinkers. Both the genders did not meet the recommended amount of fruit consumption. Insufficient physical activity amongst males was 45.21% and females 60.49%. Based on BMI categories 19.04% males were overweight and 27.12% obese and in females 23.02% and 21.34% respectively. Risk of high waist circumference and diabetes was demonstrated more by males whereas females subjected to raised blood pressure. Awareness of NCDs among total subjects found as low as 28%.Conclusions: Awareness about NCDs is alarmingly low among the rural population thus corresponding to an increased prevalence of risk factors.

Background:  Non-communicable diseases (NCDS) are the leading cause of mortality and morbidity globally. Adolescents are involved in lifestyle behaviors that foster NCDs development later on in the future because of their lack of knowledge about NCDs risk factors. However, there is a paucity of studies that have dealt with knowledge and practices of adolescents about NCDs risk factors. This study therefore aimed at assessing the knowledge and practices of adolescents about NCDs risk factors at Kabwohe HCIV. Methods:  A health center-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 95 adolescents receiving health-related care services at Kabwohe health center IV. Information was collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS version 20. Descriptive statistics and bivariate analysis were used in the statistical interpretation. Results:  The overall knowledge of adolescents about NCDs risk factors was 60%. Concerning diet that has fruits, the majority 60(62.4%) took fruits at least once, twice or thrice in a week while 35(37.6%) took fruits more frequently as in four, five times or days as they are indicated in the table above. About vegetable intake,57(60%) percent took a diet with vegetables once, twice, or thrice in a week compared to the 38(40%) that took a diet with vegetables many times a week.44(35.8%) took sugary foods more often i.e. many times in a week compared to the 61(64.3%) that took them less often. The following variables were significantly associated with knowledge about NCDs risk factors: area of residence (p=.0028), Level of education (p=.0181). Conclusion:  Average levels of knowledge were recorded among adolescents receiving care at Kabwohe health center IV though there were high practicing percentages of the risky healthy lifestyle behaviors that foster NCDs development.

Background: The main aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of major non communicable disease risk factors among higher secondary school students.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among higher secondary students of grade 11 and 12 of Kaski district in Nepal. The study period was from July 2016 to June 2017. Total sample 640 higher secondary students were recruited through two-stage cluster sampling. Self-administrated questionnaire was used for the data collection tool along with other tools which were used such as UNICEF electronic weighing scale, stature meter and mechanical aneroid sphygmomanometer. Ethical approval was obtained from IRC, Pokhara University. Data were entered intoEpiData software and analysis was performed with the help of the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS).Results: The prevalence of smoking was 6.1% which was high in male (11.9%) than female (0.6%). Alcohol consumption practice among the adolescents was 18.9%. Family history of hypertension was seen higher than family history of diabetes.The prevalence of hypertension was 11.7%. High prevalence of abnormal values of systolic and diastolic BP was found in male than female students. Overweight was seen in 6.1% students. Prevalence of obesity was almost equal in both groups.Conclusions: There is high prevalence of smoking, alcoholism among adolescents. Hypertension was more common than overwieght among adolescents.Keywords: Adolescent; college students; non-communicable diseases; risk factors.

Abstract Background: Childbearing is a teenage girl usually within the ages of 13-19, becoming fertile. Teenage childbearing and the consequences associated with it remain a major concern worldwide. In Sub-Saharan African countries like Ethiopia, teenage childbearing rates have high compared to the rest of the world. The study assessed risk-factors and regional-variations among teenage childbearing in Ethiopia.Method: The data were obtained from the 2016 Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey. A two-stage cluster sampling design was applied to select the sample. Multilevel logistic regression models were used to assess' the risk-factors and regional-variation among teenage childbearing in Ethiopia.Results: In this study, 3498 teenagers from nine regional states and two administrative cities in Ethiopia were included. Over 10% of teenagers have been born children at the time of data collection. Shortage of education, poor-wealth index, knowing ovulatory cycle, non-usage of contraceptive-method, and non-exposure to media found to be determinants of teenager childbearing in Ethiopia. Conclusions: The incidence of teenage childbearing is high in Ethiopia then the concerned bodies provide awareness to the society on the risk of early pregnancy, encourage education, expand mass media and give special attention to poor and middle-income teenagers.
