Explores a conceptual approach to understanding the processes of collaborative relationships. It is applied to a case study of non‐profit collaboration. It both uses it to understand the dynamics of collaboration among a group of four non‐profit agencies in Canada, which might otherwise have developed competitive relationships, and uses this case study to explore the utility of this conceptual model as an aid to the actual management of such collaboration by practising managers.

Despite the relative scarcity of studies on the impact of leadership styles on satisfaction and commitment of volunteers within non-profit organizations, this relationship plays a crucial role in fostering sustained volunteerism and volunteers' well-being. A questionnaire was administered to more than 200 volunteers involved in delivering social services in non-profit organizations from Central and Northern Italy. The questionnaire contained the Volunteer Satisfaction Index, the sub-scale on Affective Commitment of the Organizational Commitment Scale, and two sub-scales of the Key Leadership Behaviors, namely: Helping people to grow and lead, and Enabling learning and innovation. Socio-demographic data were collected as well. Findings revealed that leaders' actions oriented toward the enablement of learning and innovation have an effect on volunteers' affective commitment, through the full mediation of volunteer satisfaction. Leaders' actions oriented toward the growth and empowerment of volunteers, instead, did not show significant relationships with volunteer satisfaction and affective commitment.

The article provides an analysis of the formation of the social services market in the Volgograd region since the adoption of a federal law that introduced fundamental changes in the field of social services, allowing non-profit organizations to act as full participants in the social services market. A review of domestic publications addressing key issues is presented: economic and managerial aspects of access of non-profit sector organizations to the social services market, infrastructure support, the formation of a state support system, successful regional practices. The role of non-governmental suppliers in the social services market is shown, the specifics of the modern institutional structure of the social services market are described. The current state of the social services market is characterized, the data of the report of the Ministry of Economic Development of Russia for 2018 on the implementation by the constituent entities of the Russian Federation of measures to ensure access to non-profit organizations to budgetary funds are presented. The main quantitative indicators of the social services market of the Volgograd region are highlighted. The results of a sociological study showed that the majority of the population does not use the services of non-profit organizations, the popularity of their services is low, and free services are most in demand. The possibilities of non-profit organizations when entering the social services market of the Volgograd region were identified: extensive experience in providing services, the availability of proven social technologies, targeted nature of assistance, customer focus. Despite the creation of conditions for expanding the access of non-governmental organizations to budget financing, there are barriers to accessing the social services market: delayed cost recovery when services are completed, economically unjustified tariffs, insufficient compensation to non-state suppliers, unnecessarily bureaucratic reporting procedure of non-profit organizations for services provided. To develop the demand and supply of non-profit organizations, it is necessary to inform the beneficiaries in more detail about the quality of the services provided, tariffs, increase the level of public confidence, introduce successful experience in other regions. Creating favorable social and economic conditions, consolidating the efforts of all interested parties can create an effective system of social services in the Volgograd region on the principles of interagency cooperation.

COVID-19 has severely impacted the society not only in terms of health but also in terms of economic survival of individuals. Unless adequate support is provided, the pandemic will have long-lasting effects, especially on the lives of the most vulnerable, often working in the informal sector. In this article, we present a case study drawing on systems thinking and complexity theory, outlining how the city of Mumbai has responded to COVID-19. We find a multifaceted scenario where non-profit organizations, businesses and citizen volunteers operate alongside government bodies to support Mumbai’s population to overcome this pandemic. We provide broader policy lessons, as well as more specific lessons in relation to particular actors, from the first wave of the pandemic stressing the importance of becoming ‘systems thinkers’ and highlighting the importance of forming new partnerships and exploring new modes of knowledge sharing to effectively respond to crises.

The purpose of this chapter is to identify the level of intuitive potential and the extent of its use in decision-making processes in non-profit organizations, and to identify what factors determine the use of intuition in practice. To this end, a non-profit organization called “I Have a Dream” Foundation is analysed using the case study method. This chapter consists of five main parts. Firstly, the concept of intuition is defined and its importance in management and decision-making in particular is identified. Then, the issue of management of non-profit organizations and the emerging professionalization trends in this area are discussed. At the same time, the author seeks to answer the question of whether it is an opportunity or a threat. Further, the research subject, “I Have a Dream” Foundation, and the research sample are characterized. The final part of the chapter presents cognitive results of the study.

Abstract Social services in China nowadays are increasingly coproduced by both government and non-profit organizations (NPOs). However, we still know little about how NPOs perceive their government partners in social service delivery. Using a Q methodology, this study remedies this gap and identifies three profiles – namely, government as a distant facilitator, government as a hands-off collaborator, and government as a prudent principal. Also, it has been found that two conditions – namely, NPOs’ development stage and funding resources – influence their perceptions on government in social service delivery. These three profiles provide new insights into NPOs’ perceptions of their government partners in social service delivery, and they add new building blocks to existing literature, specifically on the government–NPO relationship in China.

Purpose – Social innovations are defined as innovative products or services motivated by the goal of meeting a social need, with the opportunity to create new social relationships or collaborations. Although developing social innovations has been the primary concern of non-profit organizations so far, there are signs of an increasing involvement in this type of innovations of for-profit firms, in an attempt to accomplish their corporate social responsibility strategies. This notwithstanding, there is very limited knowledge on how for-profit organizations can develop a capability to manage social innovation projects. The purpose of this paper is to provide exploratory evidence to fill this gap. Design/methodology/approach – The paper presents and discusses a case study of a firm that has been involved in social innovation for years. It is Intesa Sanpaolo, a for-profit organization that leads the Italian banking sector. Findings – The case study points to the existence of three managerial antecedents of a superior ability in social innovation: integrating CSR in its business strategy with a strong commitment from the top management; separating the activities concerned with the development of social innovations from the rest of the organization, following to the structural ambidexterity model; applying the principles of open innovation to the development of social innovations, by involving in particular non-profit organizations as a source of ideas for new social innovation projects and leveraging them to enable adoption of the new products and services. Originality/value – So far there is very limited knowledge on how for-profit organizations can develop a capability to manage social innovation projects. This paper provides exploratory evidence to fill this gap.

In the literature, most of the researches investigated the performance evaluation for the private enterprise. Comparatively, there are very few related researches emphasized the performance assessment for non-profit organizations (NPOs). It is noted that there are several evaluation methods used on NPOs, for examples: financial accountability, program products or outputs, adherence to standards of quality in service delivery, participant-related measure, client satisfaction, etc. Are these methods sufficient and adequate? In this research, we will introduce new methodologies of performance evaluation for NPOs. Balanced Scorecard (BSC), developed in 1992, is widely adopted by the enterprises around the world, and many non-profit organizations had introduced and implemented BSC. In Taiwan, very few NPOs implement BSC. It is therefore this research wants to examine the feasibility of the implementation of BSC for NPOs in Taiwan, and then develops an implementation framework of BSC. Finally, a case study will be provided to demonstrate that this framework is feasible and powerful.
