Corrosion resistance and characterization studies of calcium series chemical conversion film via green pretreatment on magnesium alloy

Purpose Magnesium alloys, although valuable, are reactive and require protection before its application in many fields. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a novel anticorrosive chemical conversion film on AZ80 magnesium alloy by environmental-friendly calcium series surface pretreatment. Design/methodology/approach The corrosion resistance of the film was evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 3.5 Wt.% NaCl solution. The surface morphologies, microstructure and composition of the film were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. Findings The corrosion current density of the calcium series film decreased by more than one order of magnitude as compared to that of the AZ80 magnesium alloy. The conversion film presented dry-mud morphology, and its thickness was estimated to be approximately 4 μm. The conversion film was highly hydrophilic, and the organic coating adhesion on treated AZ80 surface was approximately 13.5 MPa. Originality/value Excellent performance of the calcium-based chemical conversion film on Mg alloy was obtained, which does not contain heavy metals or fluorides and completely conforms to European RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) standard.

The corrosion resistance of a 1~2mm thick AZ91D magnesium alloy die-casting coated with epoxy varnish after phosphatizing was tested. Zinc phosphating solution was used. In the experiment, uniform paint was obtained by dipping method. Scratch test showed that the adhesion force between the coating and matrix is excellent. Within the test range the optimal phosphating temperature and time are 50°C and 1 min tested by dynamic potential scanning method. With the organic coating the corrosion current density decreased 3 orders of magnitude, the polarization resistance increased 3 orders of magnitude. The coated specimens were immersed in10% H2SO4, 10% NaOH and acetone for 10 days, respectively. The results showed that blistering did not occur on the paint films. This work illustrated that the simple zinc phosphating process combined with simple organic coating can meet the corrosion resistance requirements of thin-wall die casting magnesium components that require higher quality appearance.

Purpose Potassium silicate sealer was applied on solvent-cleaned, acid-pickled, dacromet-coated steel to improve its corrosion resistance. The purpose of this paper is to study the corrosion behavior of dacromet-coated steel. Design/methodology/approach Potassium silicate sealer was applied on solvent-cleaned, acid-pickled, dacromet-coated steel to improve its corrosion resistance. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and salt spray were carried out. SEM was used to study the morphological appearance of the surface. Findings The EIS behavior indicated that solvent-cleaned dacromet-coated steel sealed with potassium silicate showed that the corrosion current density was 2.664E − 5 A.cm2 which was reduced to 8.752E − 6 A.cm2 and the corrosion rate, which was 2.264E − 2 mm.year−1, was reduced to 7.438E − 3 mm.year−1 in NaCl 3.5 wt.per cent. EIS was used in NaCl 3.5 wt.%, and the Bode plot characteristics showed that the corrosion protection of solvent-cleaned, dacromet-coated steel was enhanced when sealed with potassium silicate. The EDS results of salt-sprayed, solvent-cleaned samples after 10 days indicated that the main corrosion products are composed of SiO2, ZnO and Al2O3. Research limitations/implications The detection of Li element in EDS was not possible because of the device limitation. Originality/value The current paper provides new information about the sealing properties of potassium silicate and its effects on the corrosion resistance of dacromet coating, which is widely used in many industries such as the automobile industry.

Purpose At present, carbonated drinks such as cola are especially favored by the younger generation. But because of its acid, it often leads to tooth demineralization, resulting in “cola tooth”. However, the influence of cola on the corrosion resistance of passive film of TiA10 alloy restorative materials is rarely reported. The purpose of this study was to analysis the corrosion resistance, composition of the passive film of TA10 alloy in different concentrations of Cola. Design/methodology/approach The passive behavior of TA10 alloy in artificial saliva (AS) and Cola was studied by means of potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, Mott-Schottky techniques and combined with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) surface analysis. Findings With the increase of cola content, the self-corrosion current density of the alloy increases sharply, and the corrosion resistance of the passive film is the best in AS, while Rp in cola is reduced to half of that in AS. The thickness of the passive film in AS, AS +cola and cola is about 9.5 nm, 7.5 nm and 6 nm, respectively. The passive film in cola has more defects and the carrier density is 1.55 times as high as that in AS. Cola can weaken the formation process of the protected oxide, promote the formation of high valence Ti-oxides and increase the content of Mo-oxides in the passive film. Originality/value These results have important guiding significance for the safe use of the alloy in the complex oral environments.

The ceria coatings on AZ91 substrates were successfully synthesized by chemical conversion and the corrosion resistance of AZ91 samples with and without ceria coatings were evaluated by means of electrochemical corrosion in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. According to the parameters derived from the polarization date, the Icorr (the corrosion current density) values of the coated samples are smaller than that of bare one, indicating that the corrosion resistance of AZ91 alloys has been improved to some extent. The influence of fluoridated pretreatment, inter-layer heat treatment, sintering temperature and the layer of films on the performance of ceria coatings were also investigated. It was found that the inter-layer heat treatment has no influence on improving the anticorrosion resistance of AZ91 alloy. In comparison with the bare one, the Icorr of optimal sample is about 0.0219mA/cm2, which decreases by two orders of magnitude, indicating that the ceria coatings could significantly improve the corrosion resistance of AZ91 magnesium alloy.

The corrosion behavior of hydrostatic extruded tube AZ80 magnesium alloy was investigated by polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in simulated atmosphere. The results indicated that, the corrosion resistance of the hydrostatic extruded AZ80 magnesium alloy with uneven deformed grains and increased sub-grains were obviously weakened, with larger corrosion current density in the polarization curves and lower corrosion resistances in the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy plots. This was mainly because of the hydrostatic extrusion which made AZ80 magnesium alloy within large numbers of dislocation tangles. So the residual stress increased the electrochemical activity of magnesium alloy which reduced the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys.

Purpose This paper aims to evaluate the efficacy of a zeolite-filled silane sol–gel coating as protective layer on pretreated AZ31 magnesium alloy substrates. Design/methodology/approach Anti-corrosion properties of a silane–zeolite composite coating, at various zeolite content, have been investigated on AZ31 magnesium substrates subjected to different surface pretreatment procedures before coating deposition. A short time etching by hydrofluoric acid (HF) and an anodic polarization in NaOH solution were used as surface pretreatments. Findings High hydrophobicity and good adhesion performances of coatings have been observed. Corrosion protection performance, during immersion in 3.5 per cent NaCl solution, was evaluated by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests. All coating formulations evidenced good barrier properties. Better durability properties have been shown by coating obtained on HF pretreated magnesium substrate and with a 60 per cent of zeolite content. Originality/value High electrochemical reactivity of magnesium alloys represents the mayor limit of its application in many different fields. In this concern, zeolite-based coatings are emerging as potentially effective environmentally friendly coating for metallic substrates. Despite aluminum and stainless steel substrates, in the literature, only expensive direct synthesis zeolite coating was investigated for its application on magnesium alloys protection. For this reason, this paper fulfills the need to assess the adhesion and anti-corrosion behavior of sol–gel silane–zeolite coating in magnesium alloy substrates.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper was to prepare the cerium-based conversion coating on AZ91D magnesium alloy, and its compositions, micro-morphology, corrosion resistance and the chemical valence state of the film elements were investigated. Design/methodology/approach – The methodology comprised preparation of coatings at different temperatures, which then were characterized using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, an electrochemistry workstation and by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Findings – The conversion coating had a micro-cracked morphology. The conversion coatings were composed of MgO (or Mg-OH), CeO2 and Ce2O3. The best corrosion resistance of the cerium passivation film appeared when the treatment temperature was about 35°C. Originality/value – The corrosion current densities of conversion coatings were lower by one to two orders of magnitude than the corrosion current density of the blank sample. The rare earth passivation coating prepared under the best condition could reduce the corrosion current to 3.548 × 10−6 A/cm2.

Purpose This study aims to expand the reliability and special functions of lightweight materials for high-end equipment and green manufacturing, so that it is the first such research to carry out nano-composite technology of nickel-coated carbon nanotubes (Ni-CNTs)-based titanium-zirconium chemical conversion on aluminum alloy substrate. Design/methodology/approach Corrosion behavior of various coatings was investigated using dropping corrosion test, linear polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results showed that the corrosion resistance of the nano-composite conversion coatings was significantly improved to compare with the conventional titanium-zirconium conversion coating. The morphology and microdomain characteristics of the nano-composite conversion coatings were characterized by SEM/eds/EPMA, which indicated that the CNT or Ni-CNTs addition promoting the integrity coverage of coatings in a short time. Findings Surface morphology of titanium-zirconium (Ti-Zr)/Ni-CNT specimens exhibited smooth, compact and little pores. The nano-composite conversion coatings are mainly composed of Al, O, C and Ti elements and contain a small amount of F and Zr elements, which illuminated that CNT or Ni-CNT addition could co-deposit with aluminum and titanium metal oxides. Originality/value The study of corrosion resistance of nano-composite conversion coatings and the micro-zone film-formation characteristics would be provided theoretical support for the development of basic research on surface treatment of aluminum alloys.

Microarc oxidation coating and microarc oxidation-fluorocarbon coating were prepared on the surface of AZ80 magnesium alloy profiles. The phase structure, surface morphology and corrosion resistance of the coatings were investigated using SEM, XRD, copper sulfate spot test and polarization curve test. The main phase compositions of the microarc oxidation coatings were MgO, Mg2SiO4, MgSiO3, MgF2 and MgAl2O4. With increasing pulse voltage, the oxidation coating became thicker and the microstructure of the coating surface became compact; therefore the coating corrosion resistance was improved. The oxidation coating with pulse voltage of microarc oxidation controlled between 300-438V obtained the best corrosion resistance. The corrosion current density of magnesium alloy reduced 1-3 orders of magnitude after microarc oxidation treatment with increasing pulse voltage, and the corrosion resistance of microarc oxidation-fluorocarbon coating is desirable.

The selection of appropriate surface pretreatments is one of the pending issues for the industrial application of cerium-based chemical conversion coatings (CeCC) as an alternative for toxic chromate conversion coating (CrCC). A two-step surface pretreatment based on commercial products has been successfully used here to obtain CeCC on AA2024-T3 and AA7075-T6. Specimens processed for 1 to 15 min in solutions containing CeCl3 and H2O2 have been studied by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX), glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES), potentiodynamic linear polarization (LP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and neutral salt spray (NSS) tests. SEM-EDX showed that CeCC was firstly observed as deposits, followed by a general coverage of the surface with the formation of cracks where the coating was getting thicker. GDOES confirmed an increase of the CeCC thickness as the deposition proceed, the formation of CeCC over 7075 being faster than over 2024. There was a Ce-rich layer in both alloys and an aluminum oxide/hydroxide layer on 7075 between the upper Ce-rich layer and the aluminum matrix. According to LP and EIS, CeCC in all samples offered cathodic protection and comparable degradation in chloride-containing media. Finally, the NSS test corroborated the anti-corrosion properties of the CeCC obtained after the commercial pretreatments employed.
