This monograph identifies and evaluates the marketing planning practices of British industrial goods companies operating internationally and examines the validity of the widespread belief that formalised marketing planning facilitates success. It defines the theoretical framework for marketing planning and describes a logical sequence of activities leading to the setting of marketing objectives and the formulation of plans for achieving them. It also contains a report of the results of in‐depth interviews with 385 directors and senior managers from 199 companies covering a broad spectrum of size and diversity, the purpose of which was to establish the extent to which the theory is practised and what the consequences are of either conformity or non‐conformity.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the motivations underpinning recent evolving corporate social and environmental reporting (CSER) among enterprises in China through the lenses of senior managers. Design/methodology/approach Using the interpretive tenets of engagement research, semi-structured in-depth interviews were adopted to explore the perceptions of senior managers from 21 large companies in various industries. The aim is to make sense of the emerging CSER phenomenon occurring in the field through engagement, observation and penetrating interviews. Findings The findings identify the main enablers driving CSER in China as: regulations and government influence; management awareness; benefits to company image; peer pressure/reporting by peers and public pressure on controversial companies. Guided by a system-based theoretical framework in terms of motivations for CSER, this study offers insights into the effectiveness of using widely adopted Western-based theoretical approaches in a Chinese context where companies operate against a different socio-economic, political, regulatory and cultural backdrop. Research limitations/implications The deep-rooted face (Mianzi) culture has the potential to influence managers to portray a positive image about their companies and themselves. Originality/value This engagement-based study is one of the few initiatives exploring managerial perceptions of CSER in China that adds to the scant literature pertaining to rich “emic” data in accounting, encompassing cultural influence by applying systems-oriented theoretical framework. The stimulus for CSER identified are useful for regulators and organizations to better comprehend how to set effective policies that promote CSER and fit the distinctive institutional characteristics of China.

Abstract The main objective of this article is to elaborate on the narratives of women who were in leading positions in the ’68 student movement in Turkey and to grasp their experiences and strategies of bargaining with patriarchy. The analysis is based on six selected in-depth interviews I conducted in 2004 with prominent women figures of the movement. By using the theoretical framework offered by the works of Deniz Kandiyoti and Ayşe Durakbaşa, I make a comparison between the women of ’68 and the previous generation, namely the “daughters of the Republic”, in terms of their values, norms and relational patterns. Furthermore, I exhibit the continuities and discontinuities in strategies of bargaining with patriarchy between these two generations of women. Finally, I evaluate the change they triggered in the construction of womanhood and their impact on the next generations of women.

The dismantling, in 1989, of the socialist mode of production and distribution in Bulgaria and Romania has marked the beginning of a turbulent and unprecedented period which has had dramatic implications on organisational survival. Some organisations have adapted well to the demands of the so called transition period, others have collapsed in no time. The paper explores the process of change from planned economy culture to entrepreneurial culture in four Bulgarian organisations and four Romanian organisations which have managed to establish themselves as quality suppliers for the Western market. The research methodology consists in in-depth interviews conducted with senior managers as well as an analysis of organisational documents. The theoretical model proposed by the paper is grounded in data, being developed according to Eisenhardt's (1989) methodology. Thus, the change from planned economy culture to entrepreneurial culture is mapped along five dimensions namely, strategic orientation, organisational structure, commitment to quality, technological innovation and control of resources. This theoretical framework has explanatory power only within the organisational settings explored, making no claims to absolute truth or generalisability. However, the model may serve as a working formula for other organisations facing similar pressures.

In this article study, community media and community radios, as different kinds of alternative media will be examined under a theoretical framework. Then Nor Radyo, an internet radio which is an example of the community radios from Turkey will be taken into consideration as the field study. Nor Radyo will be examined within the context of the rhizomatic approach and community radios, over the example of Nor Radyo, will be measured as to whether or not they voice the sound of the counter publicity. For the field study, in-depth interviews were made by Nor Radyo programme-makers; and content and critical discourse analysis was applied in relation with the Nor Radyo programmes.

Meaning is encoded in the production and decoded by the audience during the consumption, which is why it is a process of constant feedback. Each person experiences meaningful connotations in relation to their favourite music, hence music occupies a particular position in each one’s life and within the cultural life of particular individuals and groups.   Music meaning and emotion has been studied by David Carr (2004), who wonders if emotion is intrinsic in music, or if it is a symbolic representation – or rather if emotions are projected from the listener onto the music. Like Akio Morita (the co-founder of Sony, and the person behind Sony Walkman), Jean Baudrillard argues that meaning does not reside in an object but in how that object is used (Du Gay et al. 1997, 90). Is there a relation between what music means to an individual and his/her preference for a particular genre?   The methodological approach is mainly qualitative. I have analysed 215 responses to an online questionnaire, and followed this with an analysis of 8 semi-structured in-depth interviews. I seek to comprehend the space that music occupies in the net of relationships that constitute culture, and to discover the mechanisms of taste configuration in relation to music-meaning within a holistic approach, encompassing the circuit of culture as a theoretical framework.

 This research was conducted to investigate the perceptions of persons with disabilities and stakeholders regarding the promotion and development of Friendly and Inclusive Communities in Bantul Regency, DIY and Kendari City, Southeast Sulawesi. The study was designed using transformative mixed-method, with the framework of KIPA (Knowledge, Inclusion, Participation, and Access) as a theoretical framework core. The first step was carried out by an empirical survey through distributing questionnaires to 48 respondents in Bantul Regency and 52 respondents in Kendari City. The results of data analysis from questionnaire contents were processed through descriptive statistics to describe respondents' perceptions quantitatively. Quantitative results are used as a reference in qualitative data collection, namely through in-depth interviews with selected respondents. The results of the study show that both persons with disabilities and stakeholders have a positive perception of the promotion and development of a friendly and inclusive community in their area. Although knowledge about disability, inclusion and the issues that surround it is still limited, but both persons with disabilities and stakeholders claim the need for a Friendly and Inclusive Community to be realized. Repondents of persons with disabilities also added that participation and access to development by and for persons with disabilities needs to be improved both in terms of quantity and quality.Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menginvestigasi persepsi penyandang disabilitas dan stakeholders mengenai promosi dan pengembangan Komunitas Ramah dan Inklusif di Kabupaten Bantul, DIY dan Kota Kendari, Sulawesi Tenggara. Penelitian didesain menggunakan transformative mixed-method, dengan kerangka KIPA (Knowledge, Inclusion, Participation, and Access) sebagai core theoretical framework. Langkah pertama dilakukan dengan survey empiris melalui penyebaran kuesioner kepada 48 responden di Kabupaten Bantul dan 52 responden di Kota Kendari. Hasil analisis data dari isian kuesioner diolah melalui statistik deskriptif untuk menggambarkan persepsi responden secara kuantitatif. Hasil kuantitatif dijadikan sebagai rujukan dalam pengambilan data secara kualitatif, yaitu melalui in-depth interview kepada responden terpilih. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan baik penyandang disabilitas maupun stakeholders memiliki persepsi yang positif terhadap promosi dan pengembangan Komunitas Ramah dan Inklusif di daerah mereka. Meskipun pengetahuan mengenai disabilitas, inklusi dan isu-isu yang melingkupinya masih terbatas, namun baik penyandang disabiltias dan stakeholders mengaku perlunya Komunitas Ramah dan Inklusif untuk diwujudkan. Reponden penyandang disabilitas juga menambahkan bahwa partisipasi dan akses pembangunan oleh dan untuk penyandang disabilitas perlu ditingkatkan baik dari segi kuantitas maupun kualitas.

Some people consider death events to be the ending part of life, so they regard death as a frightening event. This study aims to describe the near-death experience of the Javanese elderly in Rejosari Village, Gondangrejo District, Karanganyar Regency. The theoretical framework used is near-death experience according to Elisabeth Kübler-Ross. The study was conducted using qualitative methods with a phenomenological approach. Data collecting techniques are carried out by in-depth interviews, observations, and library studies. The results showed that the five Javanese elderly studied underwent all stages of the theory of Elisabeth Kübler-Ross but the sequence was different. Four of the five research subjects already had an attitude of acceptance caused by a weak physical condition due to various decreases in the function of their organs.AbstrakSebagian orang menganggap peristiwa kematian merupakan bagian akhir dari kehidupan, sehingga mereka menganggap kematian sebagai peristiwa yang menakutkan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan pengalaman menjelang kematian lansia Jawa di Kalurahan Rejosari Kecamatan Gondangrejo Kabupaten Karanganyar. Kerangka teori yang dipakai adalah pengalaman menjelang kematian menurut Elisabeth Kübler-Ross. Penelitian dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan fenomenologis. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan wawancara mendalam, observasi, dan studi kepustakaan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa lima lansia Jawa yang diteliti mengalami semua tahapan dari teori Elisabeth Kübler-Ross tetapi urutannya berbeda. Empat dari lima subyek penelitian sudah memiliki sikap penerimaan yang disebabkan oleh kondisi fisik yang lemah karena berbagai penurunan fungsi organ tubuhnya.

The question “What makes an organization public?” is a leading point of scholarly inquiry in the field of public administration. This study supplements existing theory on publicness by further exploring the primary influences on an organization’s publicness—influences identified by analyzing data from in-depth interviews with senior-level managers of mental health and substance abuse treatment facilities. Results from a grounded theoretical analysis of these managers’ perceptions provide support for a conceptual framework of organizational publicness in which political authority, horizontal engagement, and public engagement are associated with higher levels of publicness. Better understanding of the prism through which senior managers conceptualize publicness may enhance managerial awareness of the most salient structural and institutional mechanisms that empower treatment facilities to effectively support individuals suffering from mental health disorders such as substance abuse, emotional distress, and depression.
