Purpose This paper aims to study the material conscious information network (MCIN) to present new models of clothing products and persons and propose new crowd-designing patterns to reconstruct an improved supply–demand relationship in clothing industry. Design/methodology/approach This paper aims to study the MCIN to present new models of clothing products and persons and propose new crowd-designing patterns to reconstruct an improved supply–demand relationship in clothing industry. Findings At last, this paper implements a prototype system of novel e-commerce platform based on the CDCI to illustrate the effectiveness and soundness of the CDCI modeling. Originality/value Different from most related works just focusing on the physiology dimension in the matching of customer and clothing, this paper proposes that the dimension of physiology, character, knowledge and experience should be synthetically considered.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to devote the optimal substitution of slip rings through an inductive power transfer system for field winding supply of generators or motors with a wound rotor. By a rotational pot-core transformer approach, the rotor-side energizing of the excitation windings can be provided isolated and free of wear. Design/methodology/approach – For design purpose, an analytical model of the inductive link and the compensation network elements is shown. Based on a pot-core transformer approach, possible types of compensation networks regarding motor-specific constraints were carried out and compared among themselves by parameter studies. The analytical parts of the model were subsequently validated with measured data of an appropriate core and accompanying FEM calculations. On the basis of an experimental prototype system, the approach has been tested both stationary and transient. Findings – The publication exemplifies how a brushless excitation system for generators and motors can be inexpensively designed and implemented. Originality/value – This paper systematically presents a comprehensive analytical approach for brushless excitation systems as well as a prototypical system. Compensation network elements regarding motor-specific constraints were carried out and compared among themselves by parameter studies.

Purpose Tourism is an industry with an enormous capacity for galvanizing local economies and for offering economic and social opportunities to broad sectors of the population. But it is not sufficient to just create and develop new destinations, products and services; new models for development that have inclusion at their core need to be adopted, taking up the opportunities offered by a prosperous and growing market. Design/methodology/approach This paper provides a viewpoint analysis of the link between inclusive tourism and tourism development. Findings This paper demonstrates that tourism is about reducing uncertainty around what to expect from a destination or service. It is also about creating an environment where all people feel welcome and included. It creates choice and instils confidence in all people, empowering them to sign up for new experiences. Practical implications In the light of growing inequality globally, this paper demonstrates that it is important to consider how to make tourism, one of the world’s largest industries, more inclusive. Originality/value This paper offers an experience-based analysis and reflection of the bridge between tourism and inclusiveness, particularly in remote and less developed areas.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to address issues related to better identification of strategic orientation of the firm and the impact of strategic orientation on sustainable development of the firm. Design/methodology/approach The paper presents an overview of the existing literature on strategic orientation of the firm, reexamines the major findings and fills the discovered gaps in theoretical constructs and models by new models. Findings In this paper, a new model of strategic orientation is proposed based on the type of relationship of aa firm with its stakeholders who are considered as suppliers of key strategic resources. Relationship between the firm and its particular stakeholder is presented on an input-output like scheme and the variants of the position of the firm towards all its stakeholders serve as foundation for determining strategic orientation types. Next, the authors present orientation of firms of different strategic types towards sustainability. Research limitations/implications The paper outlines several novels problems for strategic management and organizational design theory. Originality/value The paper provides a novel treatment of strategic orientation and particular strategic types.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to review the literature and practice of upcycling. In particular, the objective of this study is threefold: to comprehend the concept of upcycling and, subsequently, understanding the prominent terminologies used in the literature; to understand the process of upcycling and problem associated with it; and to review current literature and practice of upcycling for clothes. Design/methodology/approach A scientific literature review procedure proposed by Mayring (2002) was adopted to select and screen the paper that comprises the following steps: material collection, descriptive analysis and material evaluation. Findings Upcycling literature has witnessed significant contribution in the past one decade. The paper has identified various terminologies and definitions such as recycling, down-cycling, upcycling and redesign, which are used in the literature. Research limitations/implications The present study may help the scholars to understand the current state of literature. A practitioner of upcycling can use the findings to improve and standardise the existing process. Originality/value The process of redesigning is one of the important steps in upcycling, which comprises ideation, reconstruction and fitting. The limitation of redesigning is variability in size and pattern. This can be overcome through various techniques such as craftsmanship, time, innovation, provenance, desire and narrative.

Purpose – The aim of the research is to realize a better form of personal identification number (PIN) authentication for a mobile phone without lowering usability and acceptability. Design/methodology/approach – The authors’ approach is to extend the input operation of PIN authentication by allowing more than one number at a time using a multi-touch-enabled screen. The authors also introduced substitution keys to be able to type any combination of a PIN value and an input pattern by multi-touch typing. Findings – The authors conducted a user evaluation study using a Web-based prototype system. The results of the study indicate that PIN input time, input errors and secret memorability of the proposed scheme were no worse than those of conventional PIN authentication. The theoretical security level of the proposed scheme is almost three and a half times than that of the conventional scheme. Originality/value – The paper introduced a multi-touch-allowed secret input operation into a PIN authentication. Though the introduction affected not only an input operation but also a PIN input interface and secret information, it makes possible to realize a better security level without a drastic change of a user interface and taking a longer input time.

Purpose The study aims to introduce two new models of project scheduling by incorporating potential quality loss cost (PQLC) in time–cost tradeoff problems by overcoming the drawbacks of the existing Kim, Khang and Hwang (KKH) model. The proposed methods are named the Revised KKH-I (RKKH-I) and Revised KKH-II (RKKH-II) models for project scheduling. Design/methodology/approach The performance of the existing KKH model has been tested using a numerical example followed by the identification of the main shortcomings of the KKH method. Later, a concrete effort has been made to address its shortcomings while improving its performance significantly. The comparative analysis of the Revised KKH models with the original model has also been presented along with sensitivity analyses. Findings The study recognizes that the construct on which the original KKH method was built is important; however, certain drawbacks make it unable to consider PQLC in projects, thus making its practical use questionable. The comparative analysis of the proposed methodology with the original method demonstrated that the new models (RKHH-I and II) are more comprehensive and intelligent than the existing KKH model. Originality/value The comparative analysis of the original KKH model and its improved version reveals that the revised model is far more suitable for project scheduling. The study is important for project managers who recognize project scheduling being one of the key parameters associated with project management process, crucial to control every day during the management of projects.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to reveal benefits and factors (elements) of proximity manufacturing that enhance triple bottom line (TBL) sustainability in the clothing industry and discusses previous proximity manufacturing studies. Design/methodology/approach A systematic review is used in searching and extracting data (primary studies artifacts and proximity manufacturing elements) from peer-reviewed articles. Extracted elements are gathered and analyzed in constructed tables under TBL. Four subgroups are inducted under the business bottom line. Findings This paper shows the potential of proximity manufacturing to enhance TBL sustainability, the scope of proximity manufacturing, and the trend and absence of existing studies. The most frequently mentioned elements are time-to-market, job creation, product quality, quick response, and trade policies. Governments and clusters are also important players. Research limitations/implications Future research can further explore elements potentially improving TBL sustainability to fill gaps in existing studies, including how proximity manufacturing can drive environmental and social practices, and how governments can encourage proximity manufacturing in various markets. Practical implications Besides perceiving the benefits of proximity manufacturing, businesses may use the derived elements to make manufacturing decisions. Social implications Public policies giving privileges to the locally produced garment industry have great potential to drive the economy and employment as well as sustain local clothing knowledge and the environment. Originality/value Proximity manufacturing strategies toward sustainability are under-researched academically and under-practiced industrially; this paper provides insight into sustainability benefits of proximity manufacturing.

Purpose The purpose of this study is the use of 3D printing technology to perform maintenance on damaged parts on site. To maintain damaged parts, the user needs experience in the parts design and 3D printing technology. To help users who have little or no experience on 3D printing, a part library-based information retrieval and inspection framework was proposed to support the process of manufacturing replaceable parts using a 3D printer. Design/methodology/approach To establish the framework, 3D printing-based maintenance procedure was first defined, comprising retrieval, manufacturing and inspection steps, while identifying the technical components required to perform the procedure. Once the technical components are identified, part library-based information retrieval and inspection framework was defined based on the technical components and the relationships between the components. For validation of the concept of the framework, prototype system is developed according to the proposed framework. Findings The feasibility of the proposed framework is proved through maintenance experiments on gaskets and O-rings. Originality/value The main contribution of this study is the proposal of the framework, which aims to support the maintenance of damaged parts for the user who has little or no experience in part design or does not know how to operate a 3D printer.

Purpose Although resource sharing between scholars is evolving rapidly, This paper uses paper-based interlibrary lending (ILL) procedures in the service repertoire of academic libraries. However, the current business model of acquiring toll-access journals and e-books does not seem to fit very well with traditional ILL practices. In addition, the new models of peer-to-peer resource sharing between academics seem to be much more effective than ILL. Scholars arrange access to the needed publications by using legal (buying, exchanging) and illegal means (Sci-Hub, etc.). Furthermore, the demands for open access have increased, voiced not only by librarians and science funders but also by politicians. This development might change the scholarly publication ecosystem, even though older publications are still likely to remain closed. Design/methodology/approach This paper contrasts the ILL and usage statistics of Finnish university libraries with the use of ResearchGate, a popular academic social network, which we treat as an example of a peer-to-peer sharing service. Findings Based on the data, there seems to be a change of paradigm in the resource sharing: the traditional ILL seems to be decreasing and becoming more like a niche service and the digital use and use of social media peer-to-peer resource sharing applications seem to increase rapidly. Originality/value The paper examines current resource sharing trends. The analysis is based on the data of Finnish resource sharing, interlibrary lending and ResearchGate usage.

Purpose With the application and development of intelligent clothing and wearable technology, the term “micro-interaction” has gradually entered people’s lives. The paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach The paper takes the concept of “micro-interaction” as the design principle, starting from the consumer demand, combing the realization mode of the intelligent safety clothing in recent years, and finds out the existing problems in the design of the intelligent safety clothing. Findings Under the concept of micro-interaction, a new theoretical model has been proposed to study intelligent safety clothing. Finally, the paper also emphasizes the importance of the industrialization of the proposed model. Originality/value The paper proposes a new research and development mode for intelligent clothing in safety protection area which is a pioneering study and can be valuable for safety clothing manufacturers to produce more functional and attractive products.
