Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose a robotic system for percutaneous surgery. The key component in the system, a robotic arm that can manipulate a puncture needle is presented. The mechanical design, the motion control and the force control method of the robotic arm are discussed in the paper. Design/methodology/approach The arm with an arc mechanism placed on a 3D Cartesian stage is developed as a puncture needle manipulator to locate the position of the needle tip, tune the needle’s posture and actuate the puncture motion under the visual guidance of two orthogonal X-ray images of a patient by a surgeon. A focusing method by using two laser spots is proposed to automatically move the needle tip to a surgery entry point on the skin. A dynamics model is developed to control the position of the needle mechanism and an explicit force control strategy is utilized to perform the needle insertion. Findings With the surgical system, a surgeon can easily perform puncture operation by taking two orthogonal real-time X-ray images as a visual feedback and accurately navigating the needle insertion. The laser-guided focusing method is efficient in placement of the needle tip. The explicit force control strategy is proved to be effective for holding constant and stable puncture force in experiments. Originality/value The robotic arm has an advantage in easy redirection of the needle because the rotation and the translation are decoupled in the mechanism. By adopting simple laser pens and a well-developed kinematics model, the system can handle the entry point, locating task automatically. The focusing method and the force control method proposed in the paper are useful for the present system and could be intuitive for similar surgical robots.

Purpose When the mobile manipulator is traveling on an unconstructed terrain, the external disturbance is generated. The load on the end of the mobile manipulator will be affected strictly by the disturbance. The purpose of this paper is to reject the disturbance and keep the end effector in a stable pose all the time, a control method is proposed for the onboard manipulator. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, the kinematics and dynamics models of the end pose stability control system for the tracked robot are built. Through the guidance of this model information, the control framework based on active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) is designed, which keeps the attitude of the end of the manipulator stable in the pitch, roll and yaw direction. Meanwhile, the control algorithm is operated with cloud computing because the research object, the rescue robot, aims to be lightweight and execute work with remote manipulation. Findings The challenging simulation experiments demonstrate that the methodology can achieve valid stability control performance in the challenging terrain road in terms of robustness and real-time. Originality/value This research facilitates the stable posture control of the end-effector of the mobile manipulator and maintains it in a suitable stable operating environment. The entire system can normally work even in dynamic disturbance scenarios and uncertain nonlinear modeling. Furthermore, an example is given to guide the parameter tuning of ADRC by using model information and estimate the unknown internal modeling uncertainty, which is difficult to be modeled or identified.

Purpose This study aims to realize the constant force grinding of automobile wheel hub. Design/methodology/approach A force control strategy of backstepping + proportion integration differentiation (PID) is proposed. The grinding end effector is installed on the flange of the robot. The robot controls the position and posture of the grinding end actuator and the grinding end actuator controls the grinding force output. First, the modeling and analysis of the grinding end effector are carried out, and then the backstepping + PID method is adopted to control the grinding end effector to track the expected grinding force. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed method is verified by simulation and experiment. Findings The simulation and experimental results show that the backstepping + PID strategy can track the expected force quickly, and improve the dynamic response performance of the system and the quality of grinding and polishing of automobile wheel hub. Research limitations/implications The mathematical model is based on the pneumatic system and ideal gas, and ignores the influence of friction in the working process of the cylinder, so the mathematical model proposed in this study has certain limitations. A new control strategy is proposed, which is not only used to control the grinding force of automobile wheels, but also promotes the development of industrial control. Social implications The automatic constant force grinding of automobile wheel hub is realized, and the manpower is liberated. Originality/value First, the modeling and analysis of the grinding end effector are carried out, and then the backstepping + PID method is adopted to control the grinding end effector to track the expected grinding force. The nonlinear model of the system is controlled by backstepping method, and in the process, the linear system composed of errors is obtained, and then the linear system is controlled by PID to realize the combination of backstepping and PID control.

At present, the rate of energy utilization is low for the transit regenerative braking on urban rail; most of the energy is consumed by the resistance heating. In this paper, a regenerative braking energy injected-grid device is designed, which makes use of regenerative braking energy and effectively reduce the temperature rise caused by the resistance in the tunnel. The paper describes the composition and the design procedure of regenerative braking energy injected-grid device and presents a control strategy of device. The simulation of the single train model verifies that the stability of DC-bus voltage can be maintained and more power can be feedback to the grid by the proposed device when the train is braking. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed control method are validated by the experimental results.

A novel method of disturbance observer-based integral backstepping control is proposed for the two-tank liquid level system with external disturbances. The problem of external disturbances can be settled in this paper. Firstly, the mathematical model of the two-tank liquid level system is established based on fluid mechanics and principle of mass conservation. Secondly, an integral backstepping control strategy is designed in order to ensure liquid level tracking performance by making the tracking errors converge to zero in finite time. Thirdly, a disturbance observer is designed for the two-tank liquid level system with external disturbances. Finally, the validity of the proposed method is verified by simulation and experiment. By doing so, the simulation and experimental results prove that the scheme of disturbance observer-based integral backstepping control strategy can suppress external disturbances more effective than the disturbance observer-based sliding mode control method and has better dynamic and steady performance of the two-tank liquid level system.

The stability of grazing bifurcation is lost in three ways through the local analysis of the near-grazing dynamics using the classical concept of discontinuity mappings in the two-degree-of-freedom vibroimpact system with symmetrical constraints. For this instability problem, a control strategy for the stability of grazing bifurcation is presented by controlling the persistence of local attractors near the grazing trajectory in this vibroimpact system with symmetrical constraints. Discrete-in-time feedback controllers designed on two Poincare sections are employed to retain the existence of an attractor near the grazing trajectory. The implementation relies on the stability criterion under which a local attractor persists near a grazing trajectory. Based on the stability criterion, the control region of the two parameters is obtained and the control strategy for the persistence of near-grazing attractors is designed accordingly. Especially, the chaos near codimension-two grazing bifurcation points was controlled by the control strategy. In the end, the results of numerical simulation are used to verify the feasibility of the control method.

To improve the processing quality and efficiency of robotic belt grinding, an adaptive sliding-mode iterative constant-force control method for a 6-DOF robotic belt grinding platform is proposed based on a one-dimension force sensor. In the investigation, first, the relationship between the normal and the tangential forces of the grinding contact force is revealed, and a simplified grinding force mapping relationship is presented for the application to one-dimension force sensors. Next, the relationship between the deformation and the grinding depth during the grinding is discussed, and a deformation-based dynamic model describing robotic belt grinding is established. Then, aiming at an application scene of robot belt grinding, an adaptive iterative learning method is put forward, which is combined with sliding mode control to overcome the uncertainty of the grinding force and improve the stability of the control system. Finally, some experiments were carried out and the results show that, after ten times iterations, the grinding force fluctuation becomes less than 2N, the mean value, standard deviation and variance of the grinding force error’s absolute value all significantly decrease, and that the surface quality of the machined parts significantly improves. All these demonstrate that the proposed force control method is effective and that the proposed algorithm is fast in convergence and strong in adaptability.

Mine-used bolter is the main equipment to solve the imbalance of excavation and anchor in well mining, and the manipulator is the main working mechanism of mine bolt drilling rig. The manipulator positioning requires high rapidity and stability. For this reason, this paper proposes a composite control method of “input shaping + fractional order PDμ control”. According to the mathematical model of the valve-controlled cylinder, the fractional-order controller PDμ is developed. At the same time, the input shaping is used to feed forward the accurate positioning and path planning of the manipulator, which not only improves the robustness of the system, but also shortens the stability time of the system and restrains the maximum amplitude of the system vibration. In this paper, the control effects of fractional order PDμ controller and integer order PD controller are compared. The results show that the maximum amplitude of the control system is reduced by 75% and the stabilization time is reduced by 60% after using the fractional order PDμ controller, which fully reflects the superiority of the fractional order controller in response speed, adjusting time, and steady-state accuracy. Finally, the control effects of “input shaping + fractional order PDμ control” and fractional order PDμ controller on the stability of the system are compared. The maximum amplitude of the system was reduced by 50% by using “input shaping + fractional order PDμ control”. Numerical simulation confirms the feasibility and effectiveness of the composite control method. This composite control method provides theoretical support for the precise positioning of the manipulator, and the high stability and high safety of the manipulator also expand the application scope and depth of the composite control method.

The model of a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is nonlinear and dynamically unstable. A flight controller design is proposed on the basis of Lyapunov stability theory which guarantees that all the states remain and reach on the sliding surfaces. The control strategy uses sliding mode with a backstepping control to perform the position and attitude tracking control. This proposed controller is simple and effectively enhance the performance of quadrotor UAV. In order to demonstrate the robustness of the proposed control method, White Gaussian Noise and aerodynamic moment disturbances are taken into account. The performance of the nonlinear control method is evaluated by comparing the performance with developed linear quadratic regulator and existing backstepping control technique and proportional-integral-derivative from the literature. The comparative performance results demonstrate the superiority and effectiveness of the proposed control strategy for the quadrotor UAV.

In this paper, a hybrid fault-tolerant control strategy is putted forward to improve the stability of the four-wheel independent drive (4WID) electric vehicle with motor failures. To improve the handling performance of the vehicle with in-wheel motor failures, the faults of in-wheel motors are analyzed and modeled. Then, a model reference adaptive fault observer was designed to observe the faults in real-time. Based on the observation results, there are designed a model predictive control (MPC) based high-performance active fault-tolerant control (AFTC) strategy and a sliding mode control based high-robust passive fault-tolerant control (PFTC) strategy. However, the fault observation results may not always be accurately. For this circumstance, a hybrid fault-tolerant control strategy was designed to make the control method find a balance between optimality and robustness. Finally, a series of simulations are conducted on a hardware-in-loop (HIL) real-time simulator, the simulation results show that the control strategy designed in this paper is effectiveness.
