Behavior of ASTM A325 bolts under simulated fire conditions: experimental investigation

Purpose Heavy hex structural bolts have been used in a wide range of steel structures for many years. However, these structures remain susceptible to fire damage. Conducting fire experiments on full-scale steel structures is costly and requires specialized equipment. The main purpose of this research is to test, analyze and predict the behavior of ASTM A325 bolts under tension loading in simulated fire conditions and develop a reliable finite element model that can predict the response of similar bolts without the need for repeated testing. Design/methodology/approach The experimental work was conducted at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where an electric furnace was custom-built to test a bolted specimen in tension under elevated temperatures. A transient-state testing method was adopted to perform a group of tests on 12.7 mm (½”) – diameter A325 bolts. The tests were divided into two groups: the first one was used to calibrate the equipment and choose a final testing arrangement and the second group, consisting of four identical tests, was used to validate a finite element model. Findings The temperature-displacement and load-displacement response was recorded. The tested bolts exhibited a ductile fracture in which a cup-and-cone shaped failure surface was formed in the threaded section at the root of the nut. ASTM A325 bolts are widely used by engineers in building and bridge construction, the results of this research enable engineers to determine the behavior and strength of ASTM A325 bolts when such bolts when exposed to fire event. Research limitations/implications Structural bolts are used to connect structural members, and they are part of structural assembly. To study the behavior of the bolts, the bolts only were investigated in a fire simulated in a furnace. The bolts studied were not part of a structural assembly. Practical implications The results of this study enable engineers to evaluate the condition of ASTM A325 bolts when subjected to fire loading. Originality value Tests were conducted at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee’s structures laboratory to study the effect of fire on an ASTM A325 bolts. Many tests under fire loading have been performed by researchers on different components of steel structures, this study focuses on studying the behavior of ASTM A325 bolts which are widely used in the USA.

Purpose Nuts and bolts have been used as fasteners of steel structures for many years. However, these structures remain susceptible to fire damage. While conducting fire experiments on steel structures is sometimes necessary, to better understand their behavior, such experiments remain costly and require specialized equipment and testing facilities. This paper aims to present a highly accurate three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) model of ASTM A325 bolt subjected to tension loading under simulated fire conditions. The FE model is compared to the results of experimental testing for verification purposes and is proven to predict the response of similar bolts up to certain temperatures without the need for repeated testing. Design/methodology/approach A parametric 3D FE model simulating tested specimens was constructed in the ANSYS Workbench environment. The model included the intricate details of the bolt and nut threads, as well as all the other components of the specimens. A pretension load, a tension force and a heat profile were applied to the model, and a nonlinear analysis was performed to simulate the experiments. Findings The results of the FE model were in good agreement with the experimental results, deviations of results between experimental and FE results were within acceptable range. This should allow studying the behavior of structural bolts without the need for expensive testing. Originality/value Detailed 3D FE models have been created by the authors have been created to study the behavior of structural bolts and compared with experiments conducted by the authors.

Purpose This paper aims to research the influence of pressure, friction factors, roughness and actuating speed to the mixed lubrication models of outstroke and instroke. Design/methodology/approach Mixed lubrication model is solved by finite volume method, which consists of coupled fluid mechanics, deformation mechanics and contact mechanics analyses. The influence of friction factor on the finite element model is also considered. Then, contact pressure, film thickness, friction and leakage have been studied. Findings It was found that the amount of leakage is sensitive to the film thickness. The larger the film thickness is, the greater the influence received from the friction factor, however, the effect of oil film on the friction is negligible. The friction is determined mainly by the contact pressure. The trend of friction and leakage influenced by actuating velocity and roughness is also obtained. Originality/value The influence of friction factor on the finite element model is considered. This can make the calculation more accurate.

PurposeFailure of the materials occurs once the stress intensity factor (SIF) overtakes the material fracture toughness. At this level, the crack will grow rapidly resulting in unstable crack growth until a complete fracture happens. The SIF calculation of the materials can be conducted by experimental, theoretical and numerical techniques. Prediction of SIF is crucial to ensure safety life from the material failure. The aim of the simulation study is to evaluate the accuracy of SIF prediction using finite element analysis.Design/methodology/approachThe bootstrap resampling method is employed in S-version finite element model (S-FEM) to generate the random variables in this simulation analysis. The SIF analysis studies are promoted by bootstrap S-version Finite Element Model (BootstrapS-FEM). Virtual crack closure-integral method (VCCM) is an important concept to compute the energy release rate and SIF. The semielliptical crack shape is applied with different crack shape aspect ratio in this simulation analysis. The BootstrapS-FEM produces the prediction of SIFs for tension model.FindingsThe mean of BootstrapS-FEM is calculated from 100 samples by the resampling method. The bounds are computed based on the lower and upper bounds of the hundred samples of BootstrapS-FEM. The prediction of SIFs is validated with Newman–Raju solution and deterministic S-FEM within 95 percent confidence bounds. All possible values of SIF estimation by BootstrapS-FEM are plotted in a graph. The mean of the BootstrapS-FEM is referred to as point estimation. The Newman–Raju solution and deterministic S-FEM values are within the 95 percent confidence bounds. Thus, the BootstrapS-FEM is considered valid for the prediction with less than 6 percent of percentage error.Originality/valueThe bootstrap resampling method is employed in S-FEM to generate the random variables in this simulation analysis.

Purpose This paper aims to fabricate inclined thin-walled components using positional wire and arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) and investigate the heat transfer characteristics of inclined thin-walled parts via finite element analysis method. Design/methodology/approach An inclined thin-walled part is fabricated in gas metal arc (GMA)-based additive manufacturing using a positional deposition approach in which the torch is set to be inclined with respect to the substrate surface. A three-dimensional finite element model is established to simulate the thermal process of the inclined component based on a general Goldak double ellipsoidal heat source and a combined heat dissipation model. Verification tests are performed based on thermal cycles of locations on the substrate and the molten pool size. Findings The simulated results are in agreement with experimental tests. It is shown that the dwell time between two adjacent layers greatly influences the number of the re-melting layers. The temperature distribution on both sides of the substrate is asymmetric, and the temperature peaks and temperature gradients of points in the same distance from the first deposition layer are different. Along the deposition path, the temperature distribution of the previous layer has a significant influence on the heat dissipation condition of the next layer. Originality/value The established finite element model is helpful to simulate and understand the heat transfer process of geometrical thin-walled components in WAAM.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a new model for optimizing pre-joining processes quickly and accurately, guiding workers to standardized operations. For the automatic riveting in panel assemblies, the traditional approach of determination of pre-joining processes entirely rests on the experience of workers, which leads to the improper number, location and sequence of pre-joining, the low quality stability and the high repair rate in most cases. Design/methodology/approach – The clearances computation with the complete finite element model for every process combination is time-consuming. Therefore a fast pre-joining processes optimization model (FPPOM) is proposed. This model treats both the measured initial clearances and the stiffness matrices of key points of panels as an input; considers the permissive clearances as an evaluation criterion; regards the optimal number, location and sequence as an objective; and takes the neighborhood-search-based adaptive genetic algorithm as a solution. Findings – A comparison between the FPPOM and complete finite element model with clearances (CFEMC) was made in practice. Further, the results indicate that running the FPPOM is time-saving by >90 per cent compared with the CFEMC. Practical implications – This paper provides practical insights into realizing the pre-joining processes optimization quickly. Originality/value – This paper is the first to propose the FPPOM, which could simplify the processes, reduce the degrees of freedom of nodes and conduct the manufacturers to standardized manipulations.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to determine which of the ten material properties of the Hashin progressive damage model significantly affect the maximum load-carrying ability of center-notched carbon fiber panels under in-plane tension and out-of-plane bending. Design/methodology/approach The approach used is to calculate the maximum load using a finite element model for a range of material property values as specified by a fraction factorial design. The finite element model used has been experimentally validated in prior work. Findings Results showed that for the laminates considered, at most three and as few as one of the ten Hashin material properties significantly affected the magnitude of the maximum load. Practical implications While the results of this paper only specifically apply to the laminates included in the study, the results suggest that, in general, only a small number of the Hashin material properties affect laminate load-carrying ability. Originality/value Knowing which properties are significant is of value in selecting materials to optimize performance and also in determining which properties need to be known to a high accuracy.

Predicting the effects of material aging in view of development of intergranular damage is of particular importance in a number of nuclear installations and especially in structural integrity assessments of critical components in energy generating power plants. Since the damage is initialized on small length scales, detailed multiscale models should be employed to tackle the problem. However, the complexity of such models is high due to the need of incorporating microstructural features. In line of this the research group from Jozˇef Stefan Institute and The University of Manchester joined forces and knowledge in development of such detailed multiscale models. The basic idea was to pair the knowledge of advanced experimental techniques of The University of Manchester group with the knowledge of advanced microstructure modelling techniques of the group at Jozˇef Stefan Institute. The presented paper proposes a novel approach for intergranular crack modelling whereby a state-of-the-art X-ray diffraction contrast tomography technique is used to obtain 3D topologies and crystallographic orientations of individual grains in a stainless steel wire and intergranular stress corrosion cracks. As measured topologies and orientations of individual grains are then reconstructed within a finite element model and coupled with advanced constitutive material behaviour: anisotropic elasticity and crystal plasticity. Due to the extreme complexity of grain topologies, transferring this information into the finite element model presents a challenging task. The feasibility of the proposed approach is presented. Difficulties in building a finite element model are discussed. Preliminary results of the analyses are also given.

Purpose This paper aims to present a numerical investigation on the fire performance of a single plate shear connection in a steel-framed composite floor. Large-scale fire experiments show that the tensile membrane action of the concrete slab enhances the fire performance of composite floors. The enhancement in the performance is contributed to large slab deflections. However, these deflections cause significant rotations and tensile force in the single plate connection. Design/methodology/approach A finite element model is constructed, which consists of a secondary steel beam, concrete slab and shear connection components. The interaction between the connection components such as bolts and single plate is defined by contact surfaces. The analysis is conducted in two uncoupled phases: thermal analysis by creating fire boundaries on the composite floor model with convective and radiative heat transfer, and mechanical analysis by considering thermal expansion and changes in the material stiffness and strength due to temperature. Findings The thermo-mechanical analysis of the composite floor finite element model shows that the structure survives the 2-h Standard fire, but the connection fails by bolt shear and buckling of the connection plate. Originality/value This paper investigates the fire performance of a shear connection in a steel-framed concrete slab. Previous work generally focused on the concrete slab behavior only. The originality of the research is that the connection is considered as part of a sub-assembly and is subjected to forces due to concrete and steel beam interaction.

Based on the construction features of the steel structures of a type of electrical dust precipitator, a finite element model is established with large-scale finite element analysis software ANSYS, and the structure stress and displacement of the model under all sorts of loads are analyzed with the frontal solution method. The results indicate that analysis is relatively accurate, the finite element model and the analysis method is appropriate. The result can be further used for optimization design of the electrical precipitator steel structures.

Purpose Analysis of the thermal effects during the packaging process or in the actual operating environment is necessary to develop small monolithic integrated sensing chips with heterogeneous integration. The use of multiple layers and various materials in monolithic integrated sensing chips addresses the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) mismatch issue. The purpose of this study is to focus on the residual stress analysis of the shielding electrode, which is a metal film that prevents pull-in of proof-mass during anodic bonding in microelectromechanical system (MEMS) chips with pressure sensors embedded in an accelerometer. Design/methodology/approach The finite element model of the chip was built by the commercial software ANSYS, and the residual stress was evaluated during the die attachment process for the shielding electrode. Various shielding electrode materials and a proposed design with a keep-out zone to reduce the residual stress are discussed, with a focus on the relationship between the geometric parameters of the chip and the residual stress for copper shielding electrodes of different thicknesses. Findings The results of the finite element analysis showed that the use of polysilicon as a shielding electrode in the proposed design generated the lowest residual stress because of its low CTE. The maximum stresses in both of in-plane and out-of-plane directions in the finite element model were reduced by keep-out zone design for the proposed design of the copper shielding electrode, and had 11 times reduction in out-of-plane direction especially, according to the nonlinear analysis as the stress concentration point in the shielding electrode moved. Moreover, the design with a thinner shielding electrode, thinner glass substrate and higher CTE of the glass substrate also lowered the maximum von Mises stress. On the other hand, the stress level during the operating temperature, without considering residual stress, overestimated up to five times in the proposed design. Originality/value In this study, valuable suggestions are proposed for the design of chips with pressure sensors embedded in accelerometers.
