US party lines raise second wave handling dangers

Significance This comes amid partisan divides over how to handle the pandemic; particularly with state and federal elections nearing in November, voters’ views will increasingly influence how decisions are taken regarding any second wave. Impacts COVID-19 will disproportionately affect the health and economic wellbeing of minorities. Partisan views of the COVID-19 threat will affect how Democrats and Republicans hold conventions this year. Some states or localities might use public health concerns to try to engage in voter suppression. Partisan divides over COVID-19 are less likely to be as salient in state elections as federal.

Significance Unlike the first wave, the government’s reaction to the second wave of COVID-19 was late and tainted by political calculations. Mixed signals from the political establishment and the medical community have undermined people’s trust in and compliance with adopted measures, despite the virus's rapid spread on Czech territory. Impacts The economy is forecast to decline by 8% this year and return to pre-pandemic levels in 2023, a year later than the mid-year forecast. Two separate opposition alliances could form for the 2021 elections, splitting the opposition vote to the advantage of Babis and ANO. The political power struggle is likely to trump looking after public health.

ABSTRACT. The Kumbh Mela is a significant religious gathering of millions of Hindu devotees in India. It is celebrated on certain auspicious days in the Hindu calendar and attracts millions of pilgrims across the country. Despite the religious intention of millions of Hindu devotees, it raised public health concerns as it became a massive superspreading event for COVID-19. Being the second most populous country, India became the second most affected country during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to the arrival of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants and the presence of the double mutated variant, which was first identified in India, the Kumbh Mela probably aggravated the country’s COVID-19 situation which resulted in an uncontrollable second wave. Several cases of COVID-19 across India had been contact-traced to returnees from the event who acted as a nidus to help spread the infection. As a consequence, India’s healthcare system was severely challenged as a result of the overwhelming hospitalizations and increasing fatalities resulting in an acute manpower shortage in healthcare along with the depletion of drugs and medical supplies despite being one of the largest pharmaceutical hubs globally. Leaders and governments around the world should learn from India’s experience and thereby take preventive measures to manage potential superspreading events to curb the spike of COVID-19 cases.

Purpose – In contrast to the attention it has received in related fields of research, body image has remained understudied within the field of public health. This is highly problematic, given a growing body of evidence implicating body dissatisfaction in a range of other public health concerns. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – This commentary is based on a review of the public health, body image, eating disorder, and mental health literatures. Findings – Body dissatisfaction is implicated in a range of public health concerns, including impaired psychological health (e.g. depression) and eating- and weight-related problems (e.g. eating disorders, obesity). Originality/value – Given these associations, as well as the high levels of body dissatisfaction in the population, the authors argue for a critical need to address the prevalence of body image concerns as a public health issue worthy of greater consideration within programs and policies; dedicated funding for research on antecedents, consequences, and intervention strategies; and allocated resources for training.

Attaching and effacing pathogens, including enterohemorrhagicEscherichia coliin humans andCitrobacter rodentiumin mice, raise serious public health concerns. Here we demonstrate that interleukin-1 receptor (IL-1R) signaling is indispensable for protection againstC. rodentiuminfection in mice. Four days after infection withC. rodentium, there were significantly fewer neutrophils (CD11b+Ly6C+Ly6G+) in the colons of IL-1R−/−mice than in wild-type mice. Levels of mRNA and protein of KC/CXCL1 were also significantly reduced in colon homogenates of infected IL-1R−/−mice relative to wild-type mice. Of note, infiltrated CD11b+Ly6C+Ly6G+neutrophils were the main source of IL-22 secretion afterC. rodentiuminfection. Interestingly, intestinal stromal cells isolated from IL-1R−/−mice secreted lower levels of KC/CXCL1 than stromal cells from wild-type mice duringC. rodentiuminfection. Similar effects were found when mouse intestinal stromal cells and human nasal polyp stromal cells were treated with IL-1R antagonists (i.e., anakinra)in vitro. These results suggest that IL-1 signaling plays a pivotal role in activating mucosal stromal cells to secrete KC/CXCL1, which is essential for infiltration of IL-22-secreting neutrophils upon bacterial infection.

Subject Burkinabe COVID-19 vulnerabilities. Significance The COVID-19 pandemic has now hit nearly all African countries and appears poised to worsen dramatically. The Sahel region will likely be hit hard in the coming months; an epidemic is under way in Burkina Faso, while cases have appeared in Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger. Senegal initially showed some success with containment, but may soon have to shift from containment to mitigation. Impacts Foreign troops’ involvement in counterterrorism could be curtailed, hindering recent new deployments and operations. The crisis could also propel a reorientation of indebted Sahelian states towards Beijing and away from Paris and Washington. Civil society and opposition groups will be even more constrained as governments institute states of emergencies that could be rolled over. If Mali’s polls are a guide, Sahelian authorities will be reluctant to change the political calendar to accommodate public health concerns.

Subject Impact of India's COVID-19 lockdown. Significance Prime Minister Narendra Modi today extended India’s COVID-19 lockdown to May 3. Police have frequently resorted to heavy-handed tactics to enforce restrictions on movement, and the lockdown has left millions unable to earn a daily wage. Impacts Modi will aim to assert his credentials as a global leader by encouraging greater international cooperation in handling the pandemic. Even after curbs on movement are lifted, the government will likely cite public health concerns to restrict the right to protest. There will be growing calls for a universal basic income.

Dengue is unquestionably one of the biggest health concerns in India and for many other developing countries. Unfortunately, many people have lost their lives because of it. Every year, approximately 390 million dengue infections occur around the world among which 500,000 people are seriously infected and 25,000 people have died annually. Many factors could cause dengue such as temperature, humidity, precipitation, inadequate public health, and many others. In this paper, we are proposing a method to perform predictive analytics on dengue’s dataset using KNN: a machine-learning algorithm. This analysis would help in the prediction of future cases and we could save the lives of many.

Background: Marketing of food supplements in Greece in print media has not been examined and this study is the first attempt to provide a comparative statistical analysis. Methods: Lifestyle magazines that were distributed all over Greece and aimed at women and men were collected in the years 2014 and 2016. Five criteria with their subcriteria were developed and were related to the branding of the food supplements; their quality characteristics; the information given about health concerns; photographs of people who promoted food supplements and to claims of their suitability. Results: It seems that in terms of product branding, women’s magazines were more likely to be targeted. Some quality characteristics such as information about the ingredients of food supplements or information about banned substances were more likely to be seen in women’s magazines in 2016. In 2014 and 2016, not all advertisements provided information about health concerns and among those which informed readers about health concerns, differentiation in target audiences was observed. Photographs that showed people promoting food supplements as well as claims of suitability for various categories of consumers, seem to be gendered in 2014 but this trend was not strong enough in 2016. Conclusion: It can be argued that the marketing of food supplements was aggressive and gendered in 2014 and changed in 2016 with better information on public health but had retained some gendered stereotypes.
