It is desired instead of welding to develop a mechanical connector, which may work well to connect two units at the site in spite of circumstances of some extent of relative motions between two units caused by waves. One of the authors proposed a new type of mechanical connector, which is based on an idea of three bodies problem instead of usual mechanical connectors (two bodies problem). In this paper, wave exciting tests of a semisubmersible floating structure model with the proposed mechanical connectors of 1/100 scale and the numerical analysis using hydroelastic response analysis program VODAC are carried out and wave response characteristics of the semisubmersible floating structure model with the mechanical connectors and its feasibility are reported.

This study aims to create a numerical analysis model which can investigate the interaction between pantograph and overhead contact line used for railway vehicles, and validate the simulation results according to EN 50318 standards. Finite element analysis models of pantograph and overhead contact line are created using SAMCEF, a commercial FE analysis program, and mean, standard deviation, maximum and minimum values of contact forces are obtained. The simulation results are validated according to EN 50318, and the reliability of SAMCEF as an analysis solver of railway vehicle’s catenary system is discussed.

Concrete-filled special-shaped (L-shaped, T-shaped, and cross-shaped, and etc.) steel tube column is a type of member in which concrete is poured into special-shaped steel tube so that steel and concrete support loads together. It improves the seismic behaviors of reinforced concrete special-shaped columns due to the better confining effects provided by the steel tube. A test research on the seismic behaviors of one concrete-filled T-shaped steel tube column with pseudo static method is presented and the load-displacement curve and skeleton curve are provided. Series of steel bar stiffeners were welded onto the steel tube in order to postpone the buckling of steel tube and to enhance confining effects. A numerical analysis program was developed using a fiber-based method. The constitutive model of concrete employed the modified Mander model, and that of steel employed a bi-linear model considering the Bausinger effect. The numerical analysis program was verified by the test results and parametric analysis was carried out, in which the influences of the ratio of axial compression stress to strength, steel tube thickness and concrete strength were mainly discussed. The following conclusions are obtained: with the increase of the ratio of axial compression stress to strength, the bearing capacity of member increases and the energy dissipation capacity improve, while the ductility deteriorates. With the increase of steel tube thickness, the initial rigidity, bearing capacity, ductility and energy dissipation capacity improves simultaneously. With the increase of concrete strength, the bearing capacity increases, the energy dissipation capacity improves, while the ductility deteriorates.

This research studies the orbital dynamics of space debris in near earth orbit. The orbital dynamics of space debris is closely examined in near earth orbit whereby (apogee altitude ha=1200 km and perigee altitude hp=200 km). In addition, the lifetime of the space debris is calculated using the influence of the friction force exerted on the atmospheric particles with debris dimensions measuring between (1 and 10 cm). In this study, the Drag Thermospheric Models (DTM78 and DTM94) are used because of their dependence on solar and geomagnetic activities, and pulsed lasers are utilized to interact with Aluminum 2024 particles which are frequently employed in the structure of spacecraft and aerospace designs. A numerical analysis program (NaP1) was built to calculate the lifetime of space debris and its time of return to the atmosphere. It is then integrated with a second numerical analysis program (NaP2) developed using the Lax-Wendroff finite difference method to simulate the laser material interaction model. A high power Nd:YAG laser was applied to produce shock wave pressure in target. The results show that the maximum peak pressure occurs at 50 µm depth then slowly decays, the peak pressure increases with the increase of the laser intensity, and the optimum value of the momentum coupling coefficient (Cm) for the aluminum debris of size range (1and10 cm) is 6.5 dyn.s/j.

Taking the design of composite soil-nailing in deep foundation pit in complex surroundings for example, the paper discusses numerical analysis of soil-nailing using FLAC, a general analysis program of geotechnical engineering, used to predict the displacement and interior force in soil-nailing. Furthermore, a comparison about the interior force in soil nails between the numerical analysis and the traditional methods is made. The measurements show that the numerical analysis is more accurate than traditional methods. The conclusion is drawn that by contrast with the deficiency of traditional methods, more satisfactory results can be got from numerical analysis on composite soil-nailing using the program of FLAC.

Recently, precast slab tracks have been used widely in railway applications, especially in conventional urban railway lines. These types of tracks are rapidly constructed and limit interruptions to train operation. However, the problems of dynamic stability when the trains run on the discontinuous type of tracks must be seriously considered. This paper focuses on analyzing the train-track interaction in two types of tracks under the dynamic load by using the numerical analysis program (APATSI) to evaluate the structural response as well as the running safety to precisely understand the load transfer efficiency of precast slab track systems.
