In this article I describe those caught up in an increasingly common but worrying phenomenon, that of addictive states of mind, seen, for example, in obsessional use of video games or pornography. While the contemporary world has exacerbated the risks, addictive traits often originate in attempts to escape from an inner pain or deadness towards the false promise offered by the object of addiction. The article offers a different view of the dopaminergic system. It also looks at how the contemporary world is posing new challenges for people who have developed with such a propensity, and we will see how those prone to addictive states of mind struggle to bear certain emotional states, finding them overwhelming, and instead reach for a solution via their addiction.

Social media sites are websites used as mediums to create and share various types of contents over the internet. These sites can also be accessed through applications on mobile gadgets. Different social media sites are available for free, and most teenagers or youths have at least one active account. They use social media sites to connect and share their online profiles, daily activities, stories, and emotions. Depending on their social settings, their activities may or may not be seen by others. One of the latest trends that is spreading over the social media is the Korean Pop entertainment or popularly known as KPop. Over the social media, youths share and express how they feel about their Korean celebrities, music, and drama. However, the issue of excessive sharing of emotion-sharing over social media may increase the risk of mental illness and affect their mental health. Their obsession to keep up-to-date with their idols might lead or cause adverse consequences on their emotional states of mind. Thus, the aim of this research is to study the changes of youths’ emotions in two different countries which are Malaysia and Korea that are related to the KPop trend. We extract texts from tweets from Twitter social media sites using the Twitter API as the basis of our study. Then, the keyword 'KPop' is used to filter the tweets. Web mining model classifies the 12,000 tweets into six emotion categories, which are joy, sadness, fear, anger, disgust, and surprise. The system then records the emotion changes and the triggering events respectively.

Most electroencephalography (EEG)-based emotion recognition systems rely on a single stimulus to evoke emotions. These systems make use of videos, sounds, and images as stimuli. Few studies have been found for self-induced emotions. The question “if different stimulus presentation paradigms for same emotion, produce any subject and stimulus independent neural correlates” remains unanswered. Furthermore, we found that there are publicly available datasets that are used in a large number of studies targeting EEG-based human emotional state recognition. Since one of the major concerns and contributions of this work is towards classifying emotions while subjects experience different stimulus-presentation paradigms, we need to perform new experiments. This paper presents a novel experimental study that recorded EEG data for three different human emotional states evoked with four different stimuli presentation paradigms. Fear, neutral, and joy have been considered as three emotional states. In this work, features were extracted with common spatial pattern (CSP) from recorded EEG data and classified through linear discriminant analysis (LDA). The considered emotion-evoking paradigms included emotional imagery, pictures, sounds, and audio–video movie clips. Experiments were conducted with twenty-five participants. Classification performance in different paradigms was evaluated, considering different spectral bands. With a few exceptions, all paradigms showed the best emotion recognition for higher frequency spectral ranges. Interestingly, joy emotions were classified more strongly as compared to fear. The average neural patterns for fear vs. joy emotional states are presented with topographical maps based on spatial filters obtained with CSP for averaged band power changes for all four paradigms. With respect to the spectral bands, beta and alpha oscillation responses produced the highest number of significant results for the paradigms under consideration. With respect to brain region, the frontal lobe produced the most significant results irrespective of paradigms and spectral bands. The temporal site also played an effective role in generating statistically significant findings. To the best of our knowledge, no study has been conducted for EEG emotion recognition while considering four different stimuli paradigms. This work provides a good contribution towards designing EEG-based system for human emotion recognition that could work effectively in different real-time scenarios.

Basic principles of Ayurveda emphasize the importance of hetu (causative factor) in disease pathogenesis. Indulgence in dharaniya vega (urges to be suppressed or controlled) acts as a factor in cascade of pathogenesis. In Charaka Samhita description on nine dharaniya vegas is scattered in different contexts. Collection of all these information and analysis paves way for better understanding of the concept of Dharaniya vegas and very helpful in health promotion. It is quite interesting to note that these dharaniya vegas are connected to emotional states of mind. The natural urges of mind are important aspect of living body and significantly determine the health or diseased state of an individual.  Individual desirous of health should control these urges by gaining control over sense organs. These nine dharaniya vegas, if not controlled can lead to tridosha prakopa (vitiation of body humours) and result in varied psychosomatic manifestations.  In the present article an attempt is been made to explore the concept of dharaniya vega mentioned in Charaka samhita with contemporary relevance in clinical Ayurveda practice and thereby aide in health promotion and also as a preventive tool. Ambulatory assessment of emotional states as well as psychophysiological, cognitive and behavioral reactions constitutes an approach, which is increasingly being used in psychological research. Due to new developments in the field of information and communication technologies and an improved application of mobile physiological sensors, various new systems have been introduced. Methods of experience sampling allow to assess dynamic changes of subjective evaluations in real time and new sensor technologies permit a measurement of physiological responses. In addition, new technologies facilitate the interactive assessment of subjective, physiological, and behavioral data in real-time. Here, we describe these recent developments from the perspective of engineering science and discuss potential applications in the field of neuropsychology.

Abstract. This study measured the effect of emotional states on lexical decision task performance and investigated which underlying components (physiological, attentional orienting, executive, lexical, and/or strategic) are affected. We did this by assessing participants’ performance on a lexical decision task, which they completed before and after an emotional state induction task. The sequence effect, usually produced when participants repeat a task, was significantly smaller in participants who had received one of the three emotion inductions (happiness, sadness, embarrassment) than in control group participants (neutral induction). Using the diffusion model ( Ratcliff, 1978 ) to resolve the data into meaningful parameters that correspond to specific psychological components, we found that emotion induction only modulated the parameter reflecting the physiological and/or attentional orienting components, whereas the executive, lexical, and strategic components were not altered. These results suggest that emotional states have an impact on the low-level mechanisms underlying mental chronometric tasks.

Current ambulatory technologies are highly relevant for neuropsychological assessment and treatment as they provide a gateway to real life data. Ambulatory assessment of cognitive complaints, skills and emotional states in natural contexts provides information that has a greater ecological validity than traditional assessment approaches. This issue presents an overview of current technological and methodological innovations, opportunities, problems and limitations of these methods designed for the context-sensitive measurement of cognitive, emotional and behavioral function. The usefulness of selected ambulatory approaches is demonstrated and their relevance for an ecologically valid neuropsychology is highlighted.

Abstract. Most research in health psychology is based on retrospective self reports, which are distorted by recall biases and have low ecological validity. To overcome such limitations we developed computer assisted diary approaches to assess health related behaviours in individuals’, couples’ and families’ daily life. The event- and time-sampling-based instruments serve to assess appraisals of the current situation, feelings of physical discomfort, current emotional states, conflict and emotion regulation in daily life. They have proved sufficient reliability and validity in the context of individual, couple and family research with respect to issues like emotion regulation and health. As examples: Regarding symptom reporting curvilinear pattern of frequencies over the day could be identified by parents and adolescents; or psychological well-being is associated with lower variability in basic affect dimensions. In addition, we report on preventive studies to improve parental skills and enhance their empathic competences towards their baby, and towards their partner.

Abstract. In the study, the neural basis of emotional reactivity was investigated. Reactivity was operationalized as the impact of emotional pictures on the self-reported ongoing affective state. It was used to divide the subjects into high- and low-responders groups. Independent sources of brain activity were identified, localized with the DIPFIT method, and clustered across subjects to analyse the visual evoked potentials to affective pictures. Four of the identified clusters revealed effects of reactivity. The earliest two started about 120 ms from the stimulus onset and were located in the occipital lobe and the right temporoparietal junction. Another two with a latency of 200 ms were found in the orbitofrontal and the right dorsolateral cortices. Additionally, differences in pre-stimulus alpha level over the visual cortex were observed between the groups. The attentional modulation of perceptual processes is proposed as an early source of emotional reactivity, which forms an automatic mechanism of affective control. The role of top-down processes in affective appraisal and, finally, the experience of ongoing emotional states is also discussed.
