The paper deals with the design methodology of high voltage high power alternators driven by steam turbines. These alternators run at a high speed of 3000 rpm in most part of the world (at 3600 rpm in USA) and are of cylindrical pole construction. The design procedure suggested in the text-books of design does not well-suit for large alternators of modern time. Modern high power alternators are designed with a low value of SCR to reduce the size, inertia and cost of the rotor. The diameter is limited by the consideration of centrifugal stresses. The no.of stator slots are determined by the no. of turns. The ventilating circuit has to be designed for hydrogen as coolant and in addition with water flowing through hollow conductors, if required. The data for the design variables and the design constraints are quite different from those for small power ratings. The materials to be chosen must be of very high quality. The computer programme has been chalked out and the case-study has been conducted keeping all these points in view.

Recent requirements for marine propulsion gearing have dictated the analysis of and designs for reversing reduction drives with very high power levels, utilizing aricraft type gas turbines as prime movers. Service in either high-speed cargo vessels or ships operating in icebound waters is contemplated. Individual design features of the drive assemblies as well as methods of control and response to transient conditions is explored.

Silicon-on-insulator (SOI) structures have excellent potential for future use in radiation hardened and high speed integrated circuits. For device fabrication in SOI material a high quality superficial Si layer above a buried oxide layer is required. Recently, Celler et al. reported that post-implantation annealing of oxygen implanted SOI at very high temperatures would eliminate virtually all defects and precipiates in the superficial Si layer. In this work we are reporting on the effect of three different post implantation annealing cycles on the structure of oxygen implanted SOI samples which were implanted under the same conditions.

In this study, we propose a non-contact 80 kW, 60,000 rpm coaxial magnetic gear (CMG) model for high speed and high power applications. Two models with the same power but different radial and axial sizes were optimized using response surface methodology. Both models employed a Halbach array to increase torque. Also, an edge fillet was applied to the radial magnetized permanent magnet to reduce torque ripple, and an axial gap was applied to the permanent magnet with a radial gap to reduce eddy current loss. The models were analyzed using 2-D and 3-D finite element analysis. The torque, torque ripple and eddy current loss were compared in both models according to the materials used, including Sm2Co17, NdFeBs (N42SH, N48SH). Also, the structural stability of the pole piece structure was investigated by forced vibration analysis. Critical speed results from rotordynamics analysis are also presented.
