Fabrication of tall features using selective electrodeposition is well known process and has several applications in microelectronics packaging. The use of conventional exposure and development processes is limited by the aspect ratio and sizes of the features obtained. This paper describes a novel approach to fabricated tall structures featured in thick photoresist . Tin and copper tall structures were made by selective electrodeposition. Also presented are results from experiments performed to fabricate tall tin and copper pillars with nearly vertical walls on bare dices to form interconnect.

In this paper, we present a novel nonlinear analytical coupled trajectory optimization of a 7-DOF Baxter manipulator validated through experimental work utilizing global optimization tools. The robotic manipulators used in network-based applications of industrial units and even homes, for disabled patients, spend significant lumped amount of energy and therefore, optimal trajectories need to be generated to address efficiency issues. We here examine both heuristic (Genetics) and gradient based (GlobalSearch) algorithms for a novel approach of “S-Shaped” trajectory (unlike conventional polynomials), to avoid being trapped in several possible local minima along with yielding minimal computational cost, enforcing operational time and torque saturation constraints. The global schemes are utilized in minimizing the lumped amount of energy consumed in a nominal path given in the collision-free joint space except an impact between the robot’s end effector and a target object for the nominal operation. Note that such robots are typically operated for thousands of cycles resulting in a considerable cost of operation. Due to the expected computational cost of such global optimization algorithms, step size analysis is carried out to minimize both the computational cost (iteration) and possibly cost function by finding an optimal step size. Global design sensitivity analysis is also performed to examine the effects of changes of optimization variables on the cost function defined.

Vehicle counting plays a significant role in vehicle behavior analysis and traffic incident detection for established video surveillance systems on expressway. Since the existing sensor method and the traditional image processing method have the problems of difficulty in installation, high cost, and low precision, a novel vehicle counting method is proposed, which realizes efficient counting based on multivehicle detection and multivehicle tracking. For multivehicle detection tasks, a construction of the new expressway dataset consists of a large number of sample images with a high resolution (1920 × 1080) captured from real-world expressway scenes (including the diversity climatic conditions and visual angles) by Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) cameras, in which vehicle categories and annotation rules are defined. Moreover, a correlation-matched algorithm for multivehicle tracking is proposed, which solves the problem of occlusion and vehicle scale change in the tracking process. Due to the discontinuity and unsmooth of the trajectories that occurred during the tracking process, we designed a trajectory optimization algorithm based on least square method. Finally, a new vehicle counting method is designed based on the tracking results, in which the driving direction information of the vehicle is added in the counting process. The experimental results show that the proposed counting method in this research can achieve more than 93% accuracy and an average speed of 25 frames per second in expressway video sequence.

A novel approach to solve optimal control problems dealing simultaneously with fractional differential equations and time delay is proposed in this work. More precisely, a set of global radial basis functions are firstly used to approximate the states and control variables in the problem. Then, a collocation method is applied to convert the time-delay fractional optimal control problem to a nonlinear programming one. By solving the resulting challenge, the unknown coefficients of the original one will be finally obtained. In this way, the proposed strategy introduces a very tunable framework for direct trajectory optimization, according to the discretization procedure and the range of arbitrary nodes. The algorithm’s performance has been analyzed for several non-trivial examples, and the obtained results have shown that this scheme is more accurate, robust, and efficient than most previous methods.

This paper proposes a novel geometric analysis-based trajectory planning approach for underactuated capsule systems with viscoelastic property. The idea is to reduce complexity and to characterize coupling by imposing a harmonic drive and then to compute the dynamics projection onto a hyper-manifold, such that the issue of trajectory planning is converted into geometric analysis and trajectory optimization. The objective is to obtain optimal locomotion performance in terms of tracking error, average capsule speed and energy efficacy. Firstly, an analytical two-stage velocity trajectory is given based on control indexes and dynamic constraints. A locomotion-performance index is then proposed and evaluated to identify the optimal viscoelastic parameters. The trajectory is optimally parameterized through rigorous analysis. A nonlinear tracking controller is designed using collocated partial feedback linearization. For the sake of efficiency in progression and energy, the proposed method provides a novel approach in characterizing and planning motion trajectory for underactuated capsule systems such that the optimal locomotion can be achieved. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method.

Platinum-containing drugs such as cisplatin and carboplatin are routinely used for the treatment of many solid tumors including squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN). However, SCCHN resistance to platinum compounds is well documented. The resistance to platinum has been linked to the activity of divalent transporter ATP7B, which pumps platinum from the cytoplasm into lysosomes, decreasing its concentration in the cytoplasm. Several cancer models show increased expression of ATP7B; however, the reason for such an increase is not known. Here we show a strong positive correlation between mRNA levels of TMEM16A and ATP7B in human SCCHN tumors. TMEM16A overexpression and depletion in SCCHN cell lines caused parallel changes in the ATP7B mRNA levels. The ATP7B increase in TMEM16A-overexpressing cells was reversed by suppression of NADPH oxidase 2 (NOX2), by the antioxidant N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) and by copper chelation using cuprizone and bathocuproine sulphonate (BCS). Pretreatment with either chelator significantly increased cisplatin's sensitivity, particularly in the context of TMEM16A overexpression. We propose that increased oxidative stress in TMEM16A-overexpressing cells liberates the chelated copper in the cytoplasm, leading to the transcriptional activation of ATP7B expression. This, in turn, decreases the efficacy of platinum compounds by promoting their vesicular sequestration. We think that such a new explanation of the mechanism of SCCHN tumors’ platinum resistance identifies novel approach to treating these tumors.

Purpose Morphological interventions promote gains in morphological knowledge and in other oral and written language skills (e.g., phonological awareness, vocabulary, reading, and spelling), yet we have a limited understanding of critical intervention features. In this clinical focus article, we describe a relatively novel approach to teaching morphology that considers its role as the key organizing principle of English orthography. We also present a clinical example of such an intervention delivered during a summer camp at a university speech and hearing clinic. Method Graduate speech-language pathology students provided a 6-week morphology-focused orthographic intervention to children in first through fourth grade ( n = 10) who demonstrated word-level reading and spelling difficulties. The intervention focused children's attention on morphological families, teaching how morphology is interrelated with phonology and etymology in English orthography. Results Comparing pre- and posttest scores, children demonstrated improvement in reading and/or spelling abilities, with the largest gains observed in spelling affixes within polymorphemic words. Children and their caregivers reacted positively to the intervention. Therefore, data from the camp offer preliminary support for teaching morphology within the context of written words, and the intervention appears to be a feasible approach for simultaneously increasing morphological knowledge, reading, and spelling. Conclusion Children with word-level reading and spelling difficulties may benefit from a morphology-focused orthographic intervention, such as the one described here. Research on the approach is warranted, and clinicians are encouraged to explore its possible effectiveness in their practice. Supplemental Material https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.12290687
