A study of the structure of titanium alloy VT41 (Ti–Al–Si–Zr–Sn– β-stabilizers) was carried out on a sample subjected to hot upsetting in the (α+β)-region – conditions simulating the stamping of a disk of a gas turbine engine (GTE). The features of the formation of the textural state of primary and secondary globular grains, as well as the kinetics of their dissolution with an increase in the annealing temperature, have been determined. As a result of heat treatment at 995°C, the homogeneity of the alloy structure significantly increases comparing to the deformed state, which is associated with the recrystallization of lamellar and small-globular grains and the retention of primary globular grains of the α-phase. The sequence of structural changes has been established during the annealing within the temperature range from 950 to 1040°C.

The main magnetic parameters sensitive to the structure of steels are the parameters of their saturation loop of magnetic hysteresis: the coercive force Hcs and remanent magnetization Mrs. The saturation magnetization or saturation intensity Mr is most sensitive to the phase composition of steels. The variety of steel grades and modes of technological treatment (e.g., heat treatment, mechanical load) determined the use of magnetic structurescopy and magnetic characteristics — the coercive force Hc, remanent magnetization Mr , and specific hysteresis losses Wh on the subloops of the magnetic hysteresis of steels — as control parameters in diagnostics of the stressed and structural states of steel structures and pipelines. It has been shown that changes in Hc, Mr , and Wh are more sensitive to structural stresses and structures of steels than the parameters of the saturation hysteresis loop of magnetic hysteresis (Hcs, Mrs, and Mrs). The formulas for calculating Hc, Mr and Wh are presented to be used for estimation of changes in the parameters upon heat treatment of steels. Features of the structural sensitivity of the subloop characteristics and expediency of their use for magnetic structural and phase analyzes are determined. Thus, the range of changes in Ìr attributed to the structural changes in steels upon gradual Hm decrease is many times wider compared to the range of possible changes in Mrs under the same conditions. Conditions (relations between the magnetic parameters) and recommendations regarding the choice of the field strength Hm are given which provide the justified use of Hc, Mr and Wh parameters in magnetic structurescopy

For the purpose of using three different types of painting materials for the inner protection of the transformer vats, their behavior was studied under actual conditions of operation in the transformer (thermal stress in electro-insulating fluid based on the natural ester in contact with copper for electro-technical use and electro-insulating paper). By comparing determination of the content in furans products (HPLC technique) and gases formed (by gas-chromatography) in the electro-insulating fluid (natural ester with high oleic content) thermally aged at 130 C to 1000 hours in closed glass vessels, it have been found that the presence the investigated painting materials lead to a change in the mechanism and kinetics of the thermo-oxidation processes. These changes are supported by oxygen dissolved in oil, what leads to decrease both to gases formation CO2, CO, H2, CH4, C2H4 and C2H6) and furans products (5-HMF, 2-FOL, 2 -FAL and 2-ACF). The painting materials investigated during the heat treatment applied did not suffer any remarkable structural changes affecting their functionality in the electro-insulating fluid based on vegetable esters.

Aluminium bronzes are exhibiting good corrosion resistance in saline environments combined with high mechanical properties. Their corrosion resistance is obviously confered by the alloy chemical composition, but it can also be improved by heat treatment structural changes. In the present paper, five Cu-Al-Fe-Mn bronze samples were subjected to annealing heat treatments with furnace cooling, water quenching and water quenching followed by tempering at three different temperatures: 200, 400 and 550C. The heating temperature on annealing and quenching was 900C. The structure of the heat treated samples was studied by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Subsequently, the five samples were submitted to corrosion tests. The best resistance to galvanic corrosion was showed by the quenched sample, but it can be said that all samples are characterized by close values of open-circuit potentials and corrosion potentials. Concerning the susceptibility to other types of corrosion (selective leaching, pitting, crevice corrosion), the best corrosion resistant structure consists of a solid solution, g2 and k compounds, corresponding to the quenched and 550C tempered sample.

Experimental investigations on the kinetics of wastewater treatment processes in biofilms were performed in a laboratory reactor. Parallel with the kinetic experiments, the influence of the biofilm kinetics on the biofilm structure was studied at macroscopic and microscopic levels. The close interrelationship between biofilm kinetics and structural changes caused by the kinetics is illustrated by several examples. From the study, it is evident that the traditional modelling of wastewater treatment processes in biofilm reactors based on substrate removal kinetics alone will fail in many cases, due to the inevitable changes in the biofilm structure not taken into consideration. Therefore design rules for substrate removal in biofilms used for wastewater treatment must include correlations between the removal kinetics and the structure and development of the biological film.

Chromatin relaxation is one of the earliest cellular responses to DNA damage. However, what determines these structural changes, including their ATP requirement, is not well understood. Using live-cell imaging and laser microirradiation to induce DNA lesions, we show that the local chromatin relaxation at DNA damage sites is regulated by PARP1 enzymatic activity. We also report that H1 is mobilized at DNA damage sites, but, since this mobilization is largely independent of poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation, it cannot solely explain the chromatin relaxation. Finally, we demonstrate the involvement of Alc1, a poly(ADP-ribose)- and ATP-dependent remodeler, in the chromatin-relaxation process. Deletion of Alc1 impairs chromatin relaxation after DNA damage, while its overexpression strongly enhances relaxation. Altogether our results identify Alc1 as an important player in the fast kinetics of the NAD+- and ATP-dependent chromatin relaxation upon DNA damage in vivo.

In this study, the (FePt)94-xCu6Nbx (x=0, 2.87, 4.52, 5.67) alloy films were prepared by co-sputtering. The effects of Nb addition content and heat treatment on the microstructure and magnetic properties of the polycrystalline FePtCu films are reported. Our previous experiments showed that the ordering temperature of the (FePt)94Cu6 films reduced to 320 °C, which is much lower than that of the FePt alloy. However, the grain growth after heat treatment limited the practical application in recording media. By adding the Nb content in the (FePt)94Cu6 film, the grain sizes of the films can be adjusted from 50 to 18nm, even for the films annealed at temperature as high as 600°C. DSC traces of as-deposited disorder films at different heating rates, to evaluate the crystallization of the order phase, revealed that the addition of Nb enhanced the activation energy of ordering from 87 kJ/mol to 288 kJ/mol for the (FePt)94-xCu6Nbx (x=0 and 2.87, respectively) films. The reduction of the grain size and the corresponding increase in the activation energy of the Fe-Pt-Cu-Nb films might result from the precipitation of the Nb atoms around the ordering FePt phase. The (FePt)94-xCu6Nbx (x=2.87) film showed a coercive force of 13.4 kOe and the magnetization of 687 emu/cc.

Accurate mechanistic description of structural changes in biomolecules is an increasingly important topic in structural and chemical biology. Markov models have emerged as a powerful way to approximate the molecular kinetics of large biomolecules while keeping full structural resolution in a divide-and-conquer fashion. However, the accuracy of these models is limited by that of the force fields used to generate the underlying molecular dynamics (MD) simulation data. Whereas the quality of classical MD force fields has improved significantly in recent years, remaining errors in the Boltzmann weights are still on the order of a few kT, which may lead to significant discrepancies when comparing to experimentally measured rates or state populations. Here we take the view that simulations using a sufficiently good force-field sample conformations that are valid but have inaccurate weights, yet these weights may be made accurate by incorporating experimental data a posteriori. To do so, we propose augmented Markov models (AMMs), an approach that combines concepts from probability theory and information theory to consistently treat systematic force-field error and statistical errors in simulation and experiment. Our results demonstrate that AMMs can reconcile conflicting results for protein mechanisms obtained by different force fields and correct for a wide range of stationary and dynamical observables even when only equilibrium measurements are incorporated into the estimation process. This approach constitutes a unique avenue to combine experiment and computation into integrative models of biomolecular structure and dynamics.
