Safe food packaging is of great significance in solving food safety problem, which can ensure the quality of the food. At the same time protecting the environment should be taken into consideration, and therefore sound food packaging is not only safe to human health but also green to the environment. In this paper potential safety hazards in food packaging materials and how to develop green food packaging are discussed at length.

The development of sci-tech has promoted the institutionalization of life, food safety is a subsystem of life, and it is a huge task to ensure food safety, which thus jointly puts forward new requirements for packaging technology, especially for package materials. Nowadays, the existing food packaging materials are more and more unsatisfying, and it is hoped that the packaging materials can extend the period of use of foods and ensure no extrusion on foods in the transport process, and the consumption of packaging materials can be reduced to save resources. In this paper, the consumers psychology, the purpose of packaging and corresponding requirements raised for packaging materials are analyzed, then development trend of packaging materials is explored.

Food packaging has an important role in protecting food against physical, chemical, and biological hazards during storage and distribution and in informing the consumer about the product. The packaging of foods that susceptible to chemical / microbiological spoilage especially such as meat, hence limited storage time, is even more important than other foods. In addition, the tendency of health-conscious consumers to be a part of real-time controls and monitoring food safety has led to the widening of this packaging perception. Hence, there have been innovative studies in recent years, especially aiming real time monitorization of freshness indicators. The focus of these studies is “colour indicators” used in the production of intelligent indicator films and colorimetric sensors within specific matrices to be integrated into packaging materials. The colour indicators change colour in the presence of certain metabolites released in food spoilage, which allows freshness to be determined. Colour substances used for this purpose can be natural or synthetic. Hence, natural pigments such as anthocyanin, curcumin, etc. have been more preferrable since being harmless to the health as well as increasing tendency of consumers to utilization from natural resources. In this review, information about natural colour indicators and studies in which these indicators are used to determine the freshness of meat in real time and visually are given.

The European strategy for plastics, as part of the EU’s circular economy action plan, should support the reduction in plastic waste. One key element in this action plan is the improvement of the economics and quality of recycled plastics. In addition, an important goal is that by 2030, all plastics packaging placed on the EU market must either be reusable or can be recycled in a cost-effective manner. This means that, at the end, a closed-loop recycling of food packaging materials should be established. However, the use of recyclates must not result in less severe preventive consumer protection of food packaging materials. This may lead to a conservative evaluation of authorities on post-consumer recyclates in food packaging applications. On the other hand, over-conservatism might over-protect the consumer and generate insurmountable barriers to the application of post-consumer recyclates for food packaging and, hence, counteract the targets of circular economy. The objective of this review is to provide an insight into the evaluation of post-consumer recyclates applied in direct contact to food. Safety assessment criteria as developed by the European Food Safety Authority EFSA will be presented, explained, and critically discussed.

With the rapid development of materials science, polymers are widely used in food packaging. Because the polymer modification process can lead to the formation of low molecular weight compounds, these substances which migrate from packaging materials to food bring many hidden dangers to food safety and threaten peoples health. In order to ensure the safety of food packaging materials, it is necessary to completely study and discuss the migration process of low molecular weight compounds, and then take effective methods to control the pollutants. The real process of polymer components in food package migration is quite complex, which is affected by many non-ideal factors. If we simply analysis the migration model, the actual results could not be got. We use migration model combining with the methods of modern analysis instruments on the basis of migration model, the model will have more practical application. The paper is based on migration theory and migration model. Under the existing experimental conditions, truly simulate the migration process of food packaging materials by using modern analytical measurement instruments and experimental simulation tools. Combine the theory and practice, analyze the migration and migration influencing factors of PS extract from qualitative and quantitative aspects. It is of great practical significance in solving the food safety problems which caused by migration from food packaging materials.
