Evaluation of Effects of Extended Short-Term Aging on the Rheological Properties of Asphalt Binders at Intermediate Temperatures Using Respond Surface Method

Predicting the effects of short term aging on asphalt binders’ rheological properties can be a complicated task.  This is due to the exposure of different binders to different conditions. Hence, the utilization of a Respond Surface Method (RSM) is a practical way to predict these effects. An experimental matrix was planned to predict asphalt binders behavior at intermediate temperatures based on the central composite design for aging duration and test temperature. The test results showed that prolonging aging increased the binder complex modulus, but decreased the phase angle, while increasing the test temperature decreased the complex modulus but increased the phase angle. However, the trends in aging differ and depend on the binder type, test temperature and aging conditions. It was also found that the RSM method is a fast, effective and reliable tool to predict the effects of aging on binders’ rheological behavior.

The microstructure and chemical composition of asphalt binders have a significant effect on their rheological properties and, therefore, their performance as road paving binders. This study aims to investigate the effects of warm-mix asphalt (WMA) additives, organic type and chemical type, on the rheological properties and chemical internal structure of base asphalt and crumb rubber modified asphalt (CRMA). A set of dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) tests was conducted to obtain the rheological parameters (e.g., complex viscosity, complex modulus, phase angle) of asphalt binders. The flow activation energy was calculated from Arrhenius equation based on viscosity data to rank the thermal susceptibility. Black diagrams and master curves of complex modulus and phase angle were utilized to analyze the rheological properties. The molecular weight distributions of asphalt binders were inverted from the phase angle master curve to evaluate the molecular weight characteristics. It was found that the the addition of crumb rubber into base asphalt improves the rheological properties of enhanced modulus and elasticity. Organic and chemical types of WMA additives have different chemo-physical effects on both base asphalt and CRMA. Phase angle inversion method provides a powerful tool to monitor the molecular structure change and, therefore, the chemo-physical interactions of asphalt binders induced by modifications. Finally, there is a good correlation between flow activation energy and molecular weight.

The effect of short-term aging on rheological properties of asphalts was studied. In this paper, asphalt was aged by rolling thin film oven, which was carried out for 300 minutes and were analyzed at an interval of 75 minutes. The paper gives a description of the most commonly used conventional tests, such as Penetration and Softening Point, and a more detailed description of the viscoelastic behavior and dynamic testing of asphalts by way of Brookfield viscometer and Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR). It is found that there are a decrease in penetration and an increase in softening point with aging. The viscosity of aged asphalts was observed to increase with time. The DSR results show that short-term aging significantly increases the complex modulus at low temperature, but complex modulus at high temperature was just lightly affected. The four tests results were also incorporated to evaluate the temperature susceptibility and the rheological characteristics of asphalt binders.

This paper describes a quick approach for quantification of the effects of a chemical warm named Rediset, and its interactions with temperature and aging on the rheological properties of asphalt binders using Response Sur-face Method. The central composite method was applied to design experimental programs for three test temperature conditions, namely; very high temperature (120–180 °C), high temperature (46–82 °C), and intermediate temperature (19–31 °C). Rotational viscosity, G*/sin δ and G*sin δ were selected as parameters to assess the effects of the chemical warm additive on the rheological properties of asphalt binders for different aging conditions. Evaluation of the effects of this additive on the transformed value of G*/sin δ at high temperatures indicates that additive content has significant effect on Ln(G*/sin δ). The results for intermediate temperatures show that this additive has a positive effect on G*sin δ of asphalt binders.

Two grades of bitumen, (60/70 and 80/100), were modified by addition of Local Crumb Rubber (LCR) by weight of base bitumen. To investigate the effects of short-term aging on modified and LCR modified bitumen, Rolling Thin Film Oven (RTFO) test was used to simulate the short term aging. Dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) was used to assess the rheological properties of bitumen, both before and after aging. It was observed that at 65 degree Celcius on aging, the phase angle (sigma) of unmodified bitumen decreased by 3 and 4% for 60/70 and 80/100 bitumen respectively; whereas, for 60/70 LCR modified bitumen, the phase angle (sigma) on RTFO aging decreased by 7% for all LCR content (10, 15 and 20%) by weight of base bitumen. However, on RTFO aging (sigma), values for LCR modified 80/100 bitumen varied across different LCR content and could not be generalized. The complex modulus |G*| of LCR modified 60/70 bitumen increased on aging for both modified and unmodified bitumen at 65C, but with the increase in LCR content, the difference between bitumen aged and un-aged values of |G*| was considerably lowered. An interesting finding was for 80/100 bitumen modified with 20% LCR content by weight, which showed a reduction in |G*| values and an increase in (sigma) values on aging. This shows that to some extent, LCR compensates for the stiffening effects of aging.

Many factors affecting pavement performance include variations in binder composition and environmental conditions during asphalt mixture production. Hence, predicting pavement performance is a difficult task. This paper aims to investigate the effects of short term aging on binder viscosity at high temperature. In order to predict the effects of short term aging on the asphalt binder viscosity at high temperatures, a Response Surface Method was performed on the Rotational Viscometer test results. An experimental matrix was planned based on the central composite design for aging duration and test temperature. The test results showed that aging increased the binder viscosity, while increasing test temperature decreased the corresponding value. However, aging effects differ and depend on binder types, test temperatures and aging conditions. It was also found that the Response Surface Method is a fast, effective and reliable method to predict the effects of aging on binder viscosity behaviour at high temperatures.

Sasobit additives with different dosages were added into 70# and 90# virgin asphalt binders to prepare WMA binders. The rheological properties, includingG∗andδ, were measured by using DSR at the temperature ranging from 46°C to 70°C, and the effects of temperature, additive dosage and aging onG∗/sin⁡δ, critical temperature, and H-T PG were investigated. The results indicate that WMA additive improvesG∗but reducesδ, and the improvement on 70# virgin binder is more significant.G∗/sin⁡δexponentially decreases with the increasing temperature but linearly increases with the increasing additive dosage. Aging effect weakens the interaction between binder and additive but significantly increases the binder’s viscosity; that is whyG∗/sin⁡δis higher after short-term aging. In addition, the critical temperature increases with the increasing additive dosage, and the additive dosage should be more than 3% and 5% to improve H-T PG by one grade for 70# and 90# virgin binder, respectively.

This paper focuses on physical and rheological properties of virgin asphalt binder blended with different percentage of Rediset® content. The rheological properties of the Rediset® modified binders were characterized before and after being subjected to short-term aging using rotational viscometer (RV) and dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) according to SuperpaveTM test protocols. The results indicated that the penetration and softening point were consistently decreased and increased, respectively for unaged and short-term aged samples. The penetration index (PI) and viscosity aging index (VAI) were increased as the Rediset® modified binders aged and showed a high significance correlation. The addition of Rediset® in asphalt binder exhibited change in binder rheology after subjected to short-term aged which influenced the rutting parameter. A statistical analysis showed that Rediset® used as warm asphalt additive had significantly increased the G*/Sin δ parameter which indicated greater resistance to rutting.

Abstract Styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) was used to modify asphalt binders. The rheological and thermo-mechanical properties of the binders were investigated using rotational viscometry, dynamic shear rheometry, and thermal mechanical analysis. The optimum SBR content and mixing procedure were determined based on the rheological properties of the asphalt/SBR blends. The addition of 3–5% (w/w) SBR resulted in enhanced high temperature performance of the binders. The SBR progresses from a dispersed polymer to local networks to a global network with increasing SBR content. This phenomenon is exhibited in rheological properties such as complex modulus and melt viscosity. It is also verified visually by using a Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope. Because of this network formation, the binders showed a large increase in the complex modulus which indicates resistance to rutting.

With the increasing traffic loading and changing climatic conditions, there is a need to use novel superior performing pavement materials such as high-modulus asphalt binders and asphalt mixtures to mitigate field distress such as rutting, cracking, etc. This laboratory study was thus conducted to explore and substantiate the usage of Rubber Polymer Composite Modifier (RPCM) for high-modulus asphalt binder modification. The base asphalt binder used in the study comprised A-70# Petroleum asphalt binder with RPCM dosages of 0.25%, 0.30%, 0.35%, 0.40% and 0.45%, separately. The laboratory tests conducted for characterizing the asphalt binder rheological and morphological properties included the dynamic mechanical analysis (DM), temperature-frequency sweep in the dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) device, bending beam rheometer (BBR), and florescence microscopic (FM) imaging. The corresponding test results exhibited satisfactory compatibility and potential for using RPCM as a high-modulus asphalt binder modifier to enhance the base asphalt binder’s rheological properties, both with respect to high- and low-temperature performance improvements. For the A-70# Petroleum asphalt binder that was evaluated, the optimum RPCM dosage was found to be 0.30–0.35%. In comparison to styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS), asphalt binder modification with RPCM exhibited superior high-temperature rutting resistance properties (as measured in terms of the complex modulus and phase angle) and vice versa for the low-temperature cracking properties. Overall, the study beneficially contributes to the literature through provision of a reference datum toward the exploratory usage of RPCM for high-modulus asphalt binder modification and performance enhancements.
