Proposing a Comprehensive Training Needs Approach for the Communication Skills Training of Security Guards

Good communication skills are necessary for security guards as they are the front liners of an organisation. In ensuring that the training of these security guards fits within the overall human capital development of the organisation, a robust training needs analysis is proposed. The Training Needs Analysis (TNA), which focuses on three lines of analysis, namely, Organisation, Task and Person (OTP), is recommended in this case. To this end, both qualitative and quantitative methods were adopted for data collection. The qualitative data were collected through interviews and document study while the quantitative data were gathered through survey questionnaires distributed to the academic staff, non-academic staff, students of a public university, and visitors. The qualitative and quantitative data were analysed using SPSS version 20 involving descriptive statistics. Results of the analyses were used to propose a framework for the training of the communication skills in English for the security guards. The study is significant since it considers an alternative approach to analysing the communication training needs of the security guards.

Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal (Northhouse, 2011). In time and space, women leadership remains a subject talked about but hardly appreciated (Wren, 2013). Among the factors contributing to poor representation of women in leadership is stakeholder’s attitude (Coleman, 2005). The study sought to investigate stakeholder’s attitudes impeding women teachers' ascension to leadership positions in mixed public secondary schools, focusing in Tharaka South Sub – County, Kenya. The study employed descriptive cross-sectional survey design utilizing both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection. Probability and non-probability sampling techniques were used to arrive at the sample size. Data was collected from women classroom teachers, heads of departments, school principals, education officers, education trade unionists, Parents and Teachers Association officials and School Board of Management officials. Questionnaires, interview guide and focus group discussion guides were used to collect both qualitative and quantitative data. Data analysis was assisted by computer software (Statistical Package for Social Sciences for quantitative data and NVIVO for qualitative data). The study established that education stakeholders have a general negative attitude towards women leadership in schools.

Background: Good communication skills enhance the patient experience, clinical outcomes, and patient satisfaction. Objective: A course was developed by an interdisciplinary team (surgeon, nurse practitioner, and nurse MBA) for advanced practice providers (APPs) working for the department of surgery—a mix of practice and hospital-employed professionals—to enhance communications skills in an inpatient setting. Methods: Current concepts on provider–patient communication were discussed. Participants also asked to view and critique a video “provider–patient communication gone wrong” scenario. Lastly, participants were provided with techniques for improving provider–patient communication. The participants assessed the course. Provider communication scores were tracked from quarter 1, Fiscal Year 2014 to quarter 4 Fiscal Year 2017. Results: Of 110 eligible APPs, 95 (86%) attended the course. The anonymous survey response rate was 90% (86/95). Participants expressed satisfaction with the course content confirmed by Likert score weighted averages of >4.6/5 in all 8 domains. Communication scores increased with time. Conclusion: An interdisciplinary course aimed at enhancing provider–patient communication skills was well-received by the APP participants. The course was part of ongoing system-wide efforts to improve patient experiences, satisfaction, and outcomes. Continuing education in communication continues to play a key role in improving clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction.

As the pharmacy profession evolves, good communication skills are vital for securing the safer and more rational use of medicines. Currently there is a lack of qualitative studies researching European student pharmacists’ and their experience with communication skills training (CST). This qualitative study aimed to fill this gap by exploring Danish student pharmacists’ attitudes towards, and experiences of, CST. Focus group interviews were conducted with a heterogeneous sample of Danish student pharmacists in 2016. Interviews were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim and analyzed inductively. Fifteen students participated in three focus groups. Five categories identified as key aspects were: professional communication vs. normal conversation, motivation to engage in training, how to learn communication skills, experience with CST and universities’ role in teaching communication skills. In conclusion, there were both positive and negative attitudes towards CST among the participants. However, they had little experience with CST. Bloom’s taxonomy of the affective domain and Kolb’s experiential learning model appear to be useful in understanding students’ attitudes towards CST. Pharmacy educators can use this study to structure and improve their CST curricula by knowing what influences students’ attitudes towards CST.

Nursing and social work education programs are seeking innovative ways to prepare students to function as collaborative members of interprofessional teams upon graduation. Communication is a key linked to a decrease in medical errors, which compromise patient safety. In response to nursing students' concerns about clinical experiences in which they had witnessed poor communication with the potential to jeopardize patient care, faculty members identified a communication skills training program designed to improve team performance. Senior nursing and social work students at the beginning of their last semester of school were trained in selected modules of the Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety (TeamSTEPPS) training program and subsequently trained their student colleagues. The goal was to emphasize communication skills and strategies in a sustainable student trainer model. Qualitative and quantitative data about participant experiences revealed significant improvement in teamwork attitudes and communication skills following the training.

29 Background: Good communication is crucial to good patient care. Gynecologic oncology providers often face challenging communication scenarios, including giving serious news and discussing goals of care. Communication skills training (CST) has been shown to improve skill acquisition among providers of multiple specialties, but it has not been described in providers from gynecologic oncology or any surgical oncology specialty. Methods: We conducted a two-day CST workshop, based on the VitalTalk© model, with four faculty members (2 gynecologic oncologists and 2 palliative care physicians) and 10 gynecologic oncology provider participants (5 fellows and 5 advanced practice providers). Using didactics, demonstrations and practice sessions with simulated patients we focused on giving serious news and discussing goals of care. Pre and immediate post-workshop surveys evaluated acceptability of the workshop, perceived impact of preparedness to address challenging communication scenarios and anticipated impact on clinical practice. We compared pre and post-workshop prevalence of score of 4 or 5 out of 5 on a Likert scale for preparedness to handle 14 challenging communication scenarios. Results: Participants reported statistically significant increase in preparedness to handle 13 out of 14 challenging communication scenarios. Among those 13 topics, magnitude of improvement in proportion of participants rating preparedness 4 or 5 out of 5 ranged from 40-100% (all p < 0.05). All participants would recommend the course to others and all strongly agreed that this training should be required of all gynecologic oncology clinicians. Conclusions: Participants felt strongly that the workshop provided high quality education relevant to their practice. As a result of the workshop, participants reported statistically significantly increased preparedness to handle challenging communication scenarios. CST is feasible and has high perceived effectiveness for clinicians in the primarily surgical oncologic specialty of gynecologic oncology.

Students demand more active and participating teaching innovation methods, and activities such as presentations are not enough to satisfy those demands. In this research, competitive debate is used as inter-team gamification with third year students from a Business School studying the Human Resources Management subject. Out of this experience, qualitative and quantitative data are obtained. Results reinforce the continuation of classroom competitive debate due to the evidence of its motivational, learning, and communication skills improvement, and knowledge acquisition effects. The possibility of application with actual professionals is seriously considered.

Abstract Narrative study of religious lives has formed part of numerous projects at the Bielefeld Research Center for Biographical Studies in Contemporary Religion. An essential instrument in our designs, which mostly combine qualitative and quantitative methods, is the Faith Development Interview (FDI). In response to longstanding criticism its cognitive structural framework has been revised in respect of styles and schemata. The religious styles perspective examines the self as articulated in narratives and associates it with affectivity and emotion. This article gives an overview of our theoretical and methodological revisions, which take cognizance of current developments in lifespan developmental and clinical psychology such as attachment, mentalization and wisdom. We illustrate the implementation of these advances with a case study from our current study of ‘spirituality’,1 which we locate in the complex multi-method design, and outline the triangulation of qualitative and quantitative data.

This research aimed to determine the local wisdom of the community of Lembah Seulawah Sub-district, Aceh Besar, Indonesia of controlling insect pests in vegetable plants. In addition, the study intended to examine the impact of using paper as a mechanical trap for insect pests in vegetable plants. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used in this research. The qualitative data were obtained through interviews with farmers, whereas the quantitative data were collected from an experiment. Thirty randomly-selected respondents were interviewed and then the qualitative and quantitative data processing was performed. The results showed that they still use plant-based materials as insecticides which constitute the local wisdom of controlling insect pests in vegetable plants. The plants used as insecticides were, among others, garlic (Allium satifum), castor bean seeds (Ricinus communis), lemongrass, neem seeds, and thorny amaranth as the trap plants.

Background: D/deaf and hard of hearing populations are at higher risk for experiencing physical and mental health problems compared to hearing populations. In addition, they commonly encounter barriers to accessing and benefiting from health services, which largely stem from challenges they face in communicating with healthcare providers. Healthcare providers commonly lack tailored communication skills in caring for D/deaf and hard of hearing populations, which lead to difficulties and dissatisfaction for both staff and D/deaf and hard of hearing communities. This research project aims to develop and evaluate a capacity-building intervention for healthcare providers with the goal of increasing their awareness of D/deaf and hard of hearing individuals' experiences with the healthcare system, their distinct needs, and improving their capacity to communicate effectively with this patient population.Methods: This research project features a participative action research design using qualitative and quantitative methods. Consistent with participative action research, the study will actively involve the target populations, key stakeholders and representative associations. The intervention will be developed and tested through iterative phases. The Integrated Model of Training Evaluation and Effectiveness will guide prospective evaluation of the intervention. The latter will involve qualitative and quantitative assessments in participants before and after the intervention and at 6-months follow-up.Discussion: Results will contribute to research aimed at decreasing barriers to accessing and benefiting from healthcare services for D/deaf and hard of hearing individuals. Findings will be presented to representative associations and political authorities, as well as disseminated at research conferences and in peer-reviewed journals.

The existence of large wallow which is an ex-mining of andesite stone that is not manage properly became the focus of this study. The objective of this study was to analyse the potential of geo-tourism object at the land of ex-andesite stone mining (Setu Jayamix), as well as to find out the feasibility value of geo-tourism object at the lake of ex-andesite stone mining (Setu Jayamix). Mix methods, which is a combination of  qualitative  and quantitative  methods with the research design of  sequential exploratory was used in this study. Sequential exploratory design is a research model where the qualitative data is collected and analyzed, then followed by the collection and analysis of quantitative data, which aims to strengthen the results of the study. The results showed that the potentials of geo-tourism in ex-andesite stone mining area i.e. lake waters, the uniqueness of andesitic stone outcrops, and the view of landscape that overgrown by various plantation  crops. Based on the results of the feasibility analyses of geo-tourism, then obtained a feasible value for the geological criteria of physical components (score = 26.334), sustainable for the economic components (score = 20.114), sustainable for the conservation components (score = 10.971), and educative (score = 8.518). Meanwhile, for the accessibility component is declared to be less feasible (score = 61.446).Keberadaan  kubangan besar yang merupakan area bekas penambangan  batu andesit yang tidak terkelola secara maksimal menjadi fokus penelitian ini. Penelitian ini bertujuan  untuk mengkaji potensi obyek geowisata  pada lahan di kawasan  bekas tambang  batu andesit (Setu Jayamix), serta mengetahui nilai kelayakan obyek geowisata di kawasan danau bekas tambang batu andesit tersebut (Setu Jayamix).  Metode kombinasi (mix methods), yaitu  gabungan  antara  metode kualitatif  dan  kuantitatif   dengan  model penelitian sequential exploratory design digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Sequential exploratory design merupakan model penelitian dimana data kualitatif  dikumpulkan dan dianalisis, kemudian diikuti dengan pengumpulan dan analisis terhadap data kuantitatif, yang tujuannya untuk memperkuat hasil penelitian. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa potensi-potensi geowisata  yang terdapat di kawasan lahan bekas tambang  batu  andesit (Setu Jayamix)  adalah  perairan  setu, keunikan singkapan  batu  andesit,  serta pemandangan  lanskap kawasan yang ditumbuhi berbagai tanaman perkebunan. Berdasarkan hasil analisis kelayakan geowisata,  maka diperoleh nilai layak untuk kriteria geologis komponen fisik (skor = 26,334), berkelanjutan untuk komponen ekonomi (skor = 20,114), berkelanjutan untuk komponen konservasi (skor = 10,971), serta edukatif  (dengan skor = 8,518). Sedangkan untuk komponen aksesibilitas dinyatakan kurang layak (skor = 61,446).
