Abstract Flutter is one of the important issues in turbomachinery analysis. There are four common types of flutter, including sub/transonic stall flutter, choke flutter, supersonic stall flutter, and supersonic non-stall flutter. Flutter may occur under many different operating conditions. Therefore, it is important to study the aeroelastic stability of blades when the compressor operates under different conditions. Based on the energy method proposed by Carta [1], this paper studied the aeroelastic stability of the second-stage rotor blade of an axial compressor under different operating conditions. It is found that the aerodynamic damping of the blade under the near-stall operating point of the compressor is negative. Three typical operating points are selected to study the differences in flutter mechanism between different operating conditions. The 90% span section is selected as the reference section to analyze the variation of the aerodynamic work at different operating points. The influence of reduced frequency, modal component, and tip clearance on aerodynamic damping are analyzed under three operating points.

This paper gives an account of an experimental and numerical assessment of the aerodynamic influence of surface imperfections, in the form of sinusoidal waviness, as typically caused by manufacturing malfunctions, on a highly subsonic compressor blade. This knowledge marks a step forward towards an aerodynamically and commercially adequate zero-scrap-rate industrial manufacturing process of expensive integral parts like integrally bladed rotors. The investigation itself used the following approach. First, five potential setups were identified by intensive numerical pre-examination, differing in respect of the two parameters, wave length and wave height. The setups were investigated in the linear cascade wind tunnel of the IST for three operating conditions, with a peak profile Mach number around one, all at constant Reynolds number. It was possible to confirm three main effects responsible for higher losses due to surface waviness. These were: an acceleration on the raising edge of the wave; small shock systems on the first two wave crests; and a shock-induced separation in the wave hollow which leads to a strong shear layer.

An investigation of the effectiveness of online combustion turbine axial compressor washing using various purity grade waters and commercial washing detergents was performed. For this project, blade surface fouling dirt was obtained from gas turbine axial compressor blades installed at various field sites. The dirt was analyzed to determine the composition and consistency of typical blade surface fouling materials. A representative dirt formula and blade coating procedure was developed so that comparative tests could be performed using various cleaning fluids. Dirt coated blades were installed in a wind tunnel capable of simulating compressor operating conditions. A spray nozzle upstream of the blade test section was used for washing blades with five different test liquids to determine the effectiveness or advantages of any liquid. Once this testing was completed, a similar test setup was then utilized to inject a mixture of formulated fouling dirt and the various online cleaning liquids upstream of the blade into the wind tunnel to assess redeposit characteristics. The effect of high-purity water versus regular water on fouling dirt was also studied in separate residue experiments. Results indicate that spraying cleaning fluid into a flowing air stream is a viable means of cleaning a compressor blade. Each of the fluids was able to clean the test blade at both low and high air velocities and at different blade incident angles. Within the parameters/fluids tested, the results indicate that: 1. The blade cleaning is primarily a mechanical function and does not depend on the type of fluid used for cleaning. The results showed that most of the cleaning occurs shortly after the cleaning fluid is introduced into the flow stream. 2. Dirt removed from the blades may redeposit in other areas as the cleaning fluid is evaporated. Redeposit occurred in flow recirculation zones during the cleaning tests, and heated flow tests demonstrated dirt deposit in the presence of a cleaning fluid. In addition, the type of fluid used for cleaning has no effect on the redeposit characteristics of the dirt. 3. Blade erosion was not found to be a significant issue for the short durations that online water-washing was performed. However, uncontrolled water-washing (or overspray) for extended periods of time did result in measureable leading and trailing edge blade erosions.

AbstractNatural frequencies and vibration modes of axial compressor blades are investigated. A refined mathematical model based on the usage of an eight-nodal curvilinear isoparametric finite element was applied. The verification of the model is carried out by finding the frequencies and vibration modes of a smooth cylindrical shell and comparing them with experimental data. A high-precision experimental setup based on an advanced method of time-dependent electronic interferometry was developed for this aim. Thus, the objective of the study is to verify the adequacy of the refined mathematical model by means of the advanced time-dependent electronic interferometry experimental method. The divergence of the results of frequency measurements between numerical calculations and experimental data does not exceed 5 % that indicates the adequacy and high reliability of the developed mathematical model. The developed mathematical model and experimental setup can be used later in the study of blades with more complex geometric and strength characteristics or in cases when the real boundary conditions or mechanical characteristics of material are uncertain.

Abstract Nowadays the climate change is widely recognized as a global threat by both public opinion and industries. Actions to mitigate its causes are gaining momentum within all industries. In the energy field, there is the necessity to reduce emissions and to improve technologies to preserve the environment. LCA analyses of products are fundamental in this context. In the present work, a life cycle assessment has been carried out to calculate the carbon footprint of different water washing processes, as well as their effectiveness in recovering Gas Turbine efficiency losses. Field data have been collected and analyzed to make a comparison of the GT operating conditions before and after the introduction of an innovative high flow online water washing technique. The assessments have been performed using SimaPro software and cover the entire Gas Turbine and Water Washing skids operations, including the airborne emissions, skid pump, the water treatment and the heaters.

This paper describes a new universal algebraic model for the estimation of flow deflection and losses in axial compressor inlet guide vane devices. The model deals with nominal flow and far-off-design operating conditions in connection with large stagger angle adjustments. The first part of the model considers deflection and losses in 2D cascades, taking into account the main cascade geometry parameters and operating conditions, such as Mach number and stagger adjustment. The second part of the model deals with additional deviation and losses due to secondary flow caused by the endwall viscous effects and by the trailing vortices. The model is developed for NACA65 airfoils, NACA63-A4K6 airfoils and airfoils having an NACA65 thickness distribution on a circular-arc camber line. It is suitable for application in 1D or 2D through-flow calculations for design and analysis cases. The development of the method is based on systematic CFD flow calculations for various cascade geometries and operating parameters. The comparison of correlation results with experimental data for several test cases shows good agreement.

Rotor wakes are an important source of loss in axial compressors. The decay rate of a rotor wake is largely due to both mixing (results in loss) and stretching (no loss accrual). Thus, the actual loss associated with rotor wake decay will vary in proportion to the amounts of mixing and stretching involved. This wake stretching process, referred to by Smith (1996) as recovery, is reversible and for a 2-D rotor wake leads to an inviscid reduction of the velocity deficit of the wake. It will be shown that for the rotor/stator spacing typical of core compressors, wake stretching is the dominant wake decay process within the stator with viscous mixing playing only a secondary role. A model for the rotor wake decay process is developed and used to quantify the viscous dissipation effects relative to those of inviscid wake stretching. The model is verified using laser anemometer measurements acquired in the wake of a transonic rotor operated alone and in a stage configuration at near peak efficiency and near stall operating conditions. Results from the wake decay model exhibit good agreement with the experimental data. Data from the model and laser anemometer measurements indicate that rotor wake straining (stretching) is the primary decay process in the stator passage. Some implications of these results on compressor stage design are discussed.

Surface degradation in an axial compressor during its lifetime can have a considerable adverse effect on its performance. The present study investigates how the optimized design of compressor blades in a single compressor stage is affected by considering a high level of surface roughness on a level representative of a long period of in-service use. It is shown that including surface roughness in the optimization process is of relatively little importance, however, matching of compressor stages is shown to require consideration as the rotational speed must be increased to reach the design point as surface quality decrease. An increased surface roughness in itself is shown to have a large effect on performance. Two optimization approaches are compared. The first approach considers the compressor blades to be hydraulically smooth. The designs obtained from this approach are subsequently degraded by increasing the level of surface roughness. The compressor blades from the first approach are compared to designs obtained from a second optimization approach, which considers a high level of surface roughness from the outset. The degraded compressor stages from the first approach are shown to be among the best performing designs in terms of polytropic efficiency and stability when compared to designs obtained with the second approach.

This paper describes a methodology for obtaining correct blade geometry of high aspect ratio axial compressor blades during running condition taking into account of blade untwist and bending. It discusses the detailed approach for generating cold blade geometry for axial compressor rotor blades from the design blade geometry using fluid structure interaction technique. Cold blade geometry represents the rotor blade shape at rest, which under running condition deflects and takes a new operating blade shape under centrifugal and aerodynamic loads. Aerodynamic performance of compressor primarily depends on this operating rotor blade shape. At design point it is expected to have the operating blade shape same as the intended design blade geometry and a slight mismatch will result in severe performance deterioration. Starting from design blade profile, an appropriate cold blade profile is generated by applying proper lean and pre-twist calculated using this methodology. Further improvements were carried out to arrive at the cold blade profile to match the stagger of design profile at design operating conditions with lower deflection and stress for first stage rotor blade. In rear stages, thermal effects will contribute more towards blade deflection values. But due to short blade span, deflection and untwist values will be of lower values. Hence difference between cold blade and design blade profile would be small. This methodology can especially be used for front stage compressor rotor blades for which aspect ratio is higher and deflections are large.
