Ti(C,N)-based cermets offer good high temperature strength, perfect chemical stability, excellent wear resistance, and relatively better machinability. In the present work, the tribological behaviors of Ti(C,N)/SiC sliding pairs lubricated in water and seawater were evaluated using a ball-on-disk tribometer. The experimental results show that a relatively low friction coefficient (about 0.025) can be obtained when lubricated with artificial seawater at the sliding speed of 200 mm/s, while the friction coefficient is about 0.2 in purified water. The wear surface profiles and the lubricants collected after running-in process for the high and low friction conditions were compared. In addition, the effects of salt molar concentration of the lubricant on the Ti(C,N)/SiC friction properties were investigated. It was found that the smooth and flat surface is the premise to gain the low friction. At the same time, the proper concentration of silica colloid, which is affected by the salt ions, is also an essential one. Moreover, the high sliding speed (200 mm/s) is beneficial to achieve low friction.

Ceramics, such as Al2O3 and SiC have numerous current and potential uses in applications where high temperature strength, hardness, and wear resistance are required often in corrosive environments. These materials are, however, highly anisotropic and brittle, so that their mechanical behavior is often unpredictable. The further development of these materials will require a better understanding of the basic mechanisms controlling deformation, wear, and fracture. The purpose of this talk is to describe applications of TEM to the study of the deformation, wear, and fracture of Al2O3. Similar studies are currently being conducted on SiC and the techniques involved should be applicable to a wide range of hard, brittle materials.

Polybutyl acrylate (PBA) grafted alumina nanoparticles were synthesized. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) nanocomposites reinforced with PBA grafted nanoparticles were prepared by compression molding. The effects of PBA grafted nanoparticles on the tribological behavior of the PTFE nanocomposites were investigated on a tribometer. The abrasion mechanisms of the PTFE nanocomposites were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the abraded surfaces. The results show that the addition of PBA grafted nanoparticles maintains low friction coefficient and improves the wear resistance of the PTFE nanocomposites.

Incorporation of metallic elements, titanium and copper, into carbonaceous mesophase (CM) was performed through mechanical alloying in a ball mill apparatus. The structures of the raw CM as well as the Ti/Cu-added CM were characterized by X-ray diffraction. The tribological behavior of the Ti/Cu-added CM used as lubricating additives was investigated by using a high temperature friction and wear tester. The results show that, compared with the raw CM, the Ti/Cu-added CM exhibits a drop in the crystallinity and a transition to the amorphous. The Ti/Cu-added CM used as lubricating additive displays an obvious high temperature anti-friction and wear resistance effect, and the lager the applied load, the lower the friction coefficient and the wear severity.

The phase stability, compressive strength, and tribology of tungsten alloy containing low activation elements, W0.5(TaTiVCr)0.5, at elevated temperature up to 1400 °C were investigated. The spark plasma sintered W0.5(TaTiVCr)0.5 alloy showed body centered cubic (BCC) structure, which was stable up to 1400 °C using in-situ high temperature XRD analysis and did not show formation of secondary phases. The W0.5(TaTiVCr)0.5 alloy showed exceptionally high compressive yield strength of 1136 ± 40 MPa, 830 ± 60 MPa and 425 ± 15 MPa at 1000 °C, 1200 °C and 1400 °C, respectively. The high temperature tribology at 400 °C showed an average coefficient of friction (COF) and low wear rate of 0.55 and 1.37 × 10−5 mm3/Nm, respectively. The superior compressive strength and wear resistance properties were attributed to the solid solution strengthening of the alloy. The low activation composition, high phase stability, superior high temperature strength, and good wear resistance at 400 °C of W0.5(TaTiVCr)0.5 suggest its potential utilization in extreme applications such as plasma facing materials, rocket nozzles and industrial tooling.

In this paper, the effect of sliding speed on the anti-friction of RBD palm olein was investigated using four-ball tribotester. The speeds were varied from 800 to 1400 rpm. The normal load was set to 40 kg and the test oil was heated up to 75 °C before the experiments. The result showed that palm olein has low friction coefficient compared to additive-free paraffinic mineral oil.

The method of “cutting instead of grinding” on hardened steel is always attractive to engineers. To gain this aim the tool material must first be found. C3N4 is a new kind of super hard material and has comparable properties with diamond in high hardness, wear-resistance, low friction coefficient and thermal conductivity. A number of dry-cutting tests were carried out by C3N4-film coated tool on hardened steel, proved the coating tool is suitable for hard dry cutting.

Low friction thin layers are an excellent alternative for conventional coatings. They provide increased life of the elements, to which they were applied, due to enhancing the hardness or chemical and electrochemical resistance. They help to avoid the cracks, oxidation, as well as possible structural changes during the element's work. However, they primarily improve tribological properties by increasing wear resistance and reducing the friction. This also applies to components operating under variable conditions such as load, speed, temperature. The presented article analyzes the properties of various low-friction thin layers deposited by vacuum methods on the steel substrates. DLC, TiC, MoS2, CrCN thin layers were chosen, as they achieve the lowest possible coefficient of friction. In the framework of this work the measurements of adhesion of the investigated layers to the substrate as well as the friction coefficient, chemical analysis, microstructure and topographic analysis of the low-friction layers were carried out.

X38CrMoV5-1 steel is a typical tool steel commonly used in forging and plastic moulding industry for production of ejectors, slides, dies, etc. In plastics moulding a lot of these parts sustain relative movement. Because of this, some seizing or micro-welding may appear, especially when lubrication is not used. For many years, the different types of protective coatings were developed to avoid such problems. Most of the obtained solutions relate to the manufacturing of low friction coatings obtained by different nitriding processes and by CVD or PVD methods. In this article, the friction coefficients and the wear resistances of TiC+a-C:H protective coatings manufactured on X38CrMoV5-1 steel samples by using PVD technology are studied. The investigations are based on tribometer tests in different temperature conditions. The process of deposition of PVD coatings was realized by using multisource, hybrid factory-scale equipment of type URM 079. This equipment allows for deposition of coatings by a physical method. The tribological tests were performed using a precision high temperature tribometer under ambient and high temperature conditions with a steel and corundum balls as a counter-samples. In this paper, the results of these tribological tests are presented. It is shown that the measured friction coefficient of steel samples with PVD coatings is significantly lower than the friction coefficient of uncoated steel. It is also shown that X38CrMoV5-1 steel samples with manufactured TiC+a-C:H coatings are characterized by a very low friction coefficient and high wear resistance.

The wear behavior of Ag implantation GH4169 alloy by ion beam assisted bombardment was measured under lower applied load and sliding speed. The wear rate of GH4169 alloy decreased from 2.58 × 10−4 mm3·m−1 to 6.25 ×10−5 mm3·m−1 after Ag implantation. The friction coefficient had not mostly been changed. After Ag implantation, Ag and Ag2O were detected on the worn surface of GH4169 alloy, which benefits the formation of continuous lubrication and protected layers. The predominant wear mechanism changed from abrasion and adhesion wear to oxidation and adhesion wear. In addition, the hardness increased. So, the wear resistance of GH4169 alloy under lower applied load and sliding speed can be improved with Ag implantation by ion beam assisted bombardment.
