Distinctions Between Two Types of Self Excited Gas Oscillations in Vaneless Radial Diffusers

Experiments were conducted to determine the characteristics of oscillating flows in a centrifugal compression system with vaneless diffusers. The system was operated without a diffuser and with eight different diffuser configurations to determine the effects of diffuser diameter and width ratios on the unsteady behavior of the system. Mean and fluctuating velocity and static pressure measurements were carried out in the time and frequency domains. The system without a diffuser was found to be stable at all operating conditions. The installation of any of the eight diffusers resulted in the generation of self-excited oscillations at some operating conditions. It was found that the critical flow coefficient at which onset of oscillations was observed increased as the diffuser width ratio was decreased and as the diameter ratio was increased. Comparison between the characteristics of the oscillations observed in the present study and those observed by other investigators indicate that rotating stall in two geometrically similar diffusers can be an order of magnitude different in the non-dimensional rotational speed and level of unsteady pressure fluctuations. These differences point towards the possibility of existence of more than one set of flow conditions which could lead to the occurrence of the unsteady phenomena.

The operation of centrifugal compressor systems is limited at low-mass flow rates by fluid flow instabilities leading to rotating stall or surge. These instabilities limit the flow range in which the compressor can operate. They also lower the performance and efficiency of the compressor. Experiments were conducted to investigate a model of radial vaneless diffuser at stall as well as stall-free operating conditions. The speed of the impeller was kept constant at 2000 RPM, while the mass flow rate was reduced gradually to scan the steady and unsteady operating conditions of the compressor. The flow rate through the compressor was gradually decreased until flow instability is initiated at the diffuser. The flow rate was further reduced to study the characteristics of rotating stall. These measurements were reported for diffuser diameter ratios, Do/Di, of 2.0 with diffuser width ratio, b/Di, of 0.055. At lower flow rates than the critical, the rotating stall pattern with one stall cell was dominant over the pattern with two cells. In addition, the instability in the diffuser was successfully delayed to a lower flow coefficient when rough surfaces were attached to one or both sides of the diffuser with the lowest values achieved by attaching the rough surface to the shroud. Results show that the roughness has no significant effect on stall cell characteristics.

Centrifugal compressors or blowers are widely used in many industrial applications. However, the operation of such systems is limited at low-mass flow rates by self-excited flow instabilities which could result in rotating stall or surge of the compressor. These instabilities will limit the flow range in which the compressor or the blower can operate, and will also lower their performance and efficiency. Experimental techniques were used to investigate a model of radial vaneless diffuser at stall and stall-free operating conditions. The speed of the impeller was kept constant, while the mass flow rate was reduced gradually to study the steady and unsteady operating conditions of the compressor. Additional experiments were made to investigate the effects of reducing the exit flow area on the inception of stall. The results indicate that the instability in the diffuser was successfully delayed to a lower flow coefficient when throttle rings were attached to either one or both of the diffuser walls (i.e., to reduce the diffuser exit flow area). The results also showed that an increase of the blockage ratio improves the stability of the system (i.e., the critical mass flow rate could be reduced to 50% of its value without blockage). The results indicate that the throttle rings could be an effective method to control stall in radial diffusers.

The stall inception process in high-speed compressor components is important to understand in order to increase stage loading while maintaining stall margin. This paper presents the results of an in depth experimental investigation on the stall inception of a two stage, high-speed, low aspect ratio fan that is representative of current operational commercial and military fan technology. High-response static pressure measurements are presented which detail the stall inception process of the fan under various operating conditions. These conditions include: varied corrected speeds, a smooth case, a circumferential groove casing treatment, and a recirculating cavity casing treatment. Stage pressure characteristics and radial pressure ratio profiles are presented for the different operating conditions. The stage performance data, together with the static pressure data, are analyzed to provide a clear and thorough understanding of the stall inception process and how the process may vary under different conditions. Experimental results show that a stage may stall on the positive, neutral, or negative sloped part of the pressure characteristic. The three casing treatments had a significant effect on the rotor tip flow and these variations changed the stall inception path of the fan. Stall inception was characterized by the formation of a stall inception cell which grew to fully developed rotating stall. Properties affected by the changing tip flow include the stall inception duration, stall inception cell frequency, existence of modal waves, duration of modal waves, and modal wave frequency. In some instances modal waves appear to play a role in stall inception, in others they do not.

Abstract In this current study, the transient numerical calculations using CFD code are carried out under different outlet impeller diameters for the flow field within a centrifugal pump under single-phase and cavitation conditions. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses are carried out on all of these results in order to better understand the flow structure within a centrifugal pump. Also, the investigations using different outlet impeller diameters configurations relating to the static pressure, velocity magnitude, vapour volume fraction variations, as well as pressure fluctuations in both time and frequency domain at the impeller and volute of the pump are analysed. Velocity and static pressure variations of the pump under different outlet impeller diameters range (200, 210 and 220 mm) are investigated. Reliable model is developed and validated, at various pump operating conditions, to analyse the characteristics of pressure fluctuations in both time and frequency domain. Cavitation occurrence, under different outlet impeller diameters and flow rates, are detected and correlated, using a CFD model (volume fraction distributions). Based on the developed model’s findings, at the set operating conditions ranges, the distribution and impact (cavitation and head-wises) of both the pressure and velocity are analysed. The average pressure fluctuation in the volute for do = 210 mm is higher than for do = 200 mm by about 6.74%, also the maximum pressure fluctuation for do = 220 mm is higher than for do = 210 mm by around 7.4%. Furthermore, the maximum pressure fluctuation in the impeller for do = 210 mm is higher than for do = 200 mm by 12.48%, also for do = 220 mm is higher than for do = 210 mm by 10.8%. The developed CFD models are proved valuable tools in identifying and optimizing the pump performance and characterization. The head for when do = 220 mm is higher than for when do = 200 mm under both single-phase and cavitation conditions by around 14.13% and 14.69%. The maximum pressure fluctuation for do = 200 mm is lower than for do = 210 mm by 41.58%. Furthermore, the maximum pressure fluctuation at the impeller for do = 220 mm is higher than the two models. There is a small clearance between the impeller and the volute for this model, leading to the pressure fluctuation amplitudes being higher than the other above models.

For flexible operation steam turbines may operate occasionally at low load. Operation away from the original design regime looks set to be an increasing trend mainly due to the presence of intermittently available renewable energy sources in the grid. This paper sets out an approach for considering low flow effects on turbine designs. At low load operating conditions rotating instabilities (RIS) can occur in the rear stages of LP steam turbines. The instabilities are comparable in many ways to rotating stall in compressors. Ideally the turbine blade natural frequencies should be designed to avoid the frequencies generated by the RIS system. The characteristics of RIS systems were experimentally investigated to understand the dependency with both flow coefficient and exhaust configuration. Correlations have been developed to characterize the dynamic pressure amplitudes and the fractional speed of the RIS moving around the wheel. The presented correlation based method is shown calibrated for a specific blade design. Two different test rigs provide the basis for the work presented. A low pressure model steam turbine provided detailed information for key blade/exhaust combinations. A simplified small scale air turbine was used to provide additional input for the behavior with alternative exhaust back wall position. Observations of the characteristic RIS behavior from model turbine tests are set in context with observed changes in the flow field.

Unshrouded centrifugal compressor impellers typically operate at high rotational speeds and volume flow rates. The resulting high mean stress levels leave little margin for dynamic excitations that can cause high cycle fatigue. In addition to the well-established high frequency impeller blade excitations of centrifugal compressors caused by the stationary parts, such as vaned diffusers or inlet guide vanes, the presented study addresses an unsteady rotating flow feature (rotating stall) which should be taken into account when addressing high cycle fatigue during the design phase. The unsteady fluid-structure interaction between rotating stall and unshrouded impellers was experimentally described and quantified during two different measurement campaigns with two full-size compression units operating under real conditions. In both campaigns dynamic strain gauges and pressure transducers were mounted at various locations on the impeller of the first compression stage. The casing was also equipped with a set of dynamic pressure transducers to complement the study. Rotating pressure fluctuations were found to form an additional impeller excitation at a frequency that is not a multiple of the shaft speed. The measurements show that the excitation amplitude and frequency caused by the rotating pressure fluctuations depend on the operating conditions and are therefore challenging to predict and consider during the design phase. Furthermore, the excitation mechanism presented was found to cause resonant impeller blade response under specific operating conditions. For the experimentally investigated impeller geometries a rotating pressure fluctuation caused approximately 1.5 MPa of additional dynamic stress in the structure per 1 mbar of dynamic pressure amplitude when exciting the first bending mode of the impeller. The induced dynamic mechanical stresses due to rotating stall are in the order of 10% of the endurance limit of the material for the tested impeller geometries, therefore they are not critical and confirm a robust and reliable design.

The flow through a ported shroud compressor of an automobile turbocharger is simulated using Large Eddy Simulations. Generally, the compressor is subjected to work within certain range of the mass-flow conditions. Reduction of the operation mass-flow below a certain minimum limit, leads to breakdown of the complete compressor operability. Flow reversal occurs in the compressor wheel, which results in amplification of velocity and pressure fluctuations. Consequentially, large vibratory stresses are induced into the blades under off-design condition and thereby affect the blade life duration detrimentally. The aim of this study is to understand the generation of flow-structures during extreme operable conditions (surge condition) in a centrifugal compressor. The investigation of the appearing flow-structures with the surge phenomenon is essential to explore new methods that improve the stability or the flow-operating regime of the compressor. The complete 360° compressor geometry is utilized in the computational simulations. Further, the transient sliding mesh technique is applied to account for an accurate prediction of the mesh motion and thus, the geometrical interaction between the impeller and the stationary diffuser. The numerical results are compared with available experimental measurements obtained under the same operating conditions (design and near-surge condition). The rotating stall instability is predicted using FFT data analysis. Furthermore, the numerical study captures the low frequency peak characterizing the global instability of the surge condition.

Dynamic control of rotating stall in an axial flow compressor has been implemented using aeromechanical feedback. The control strategy developed used an array of wall jets, upstream of a single-stage compressor, which were regulated by locally reacting reed valves. These reed valves responded to the small-amplitude flow-field pressure perturbations that precede rotating stall. The valve design was such that the combined system, compressor plus reed valve controller, was stable under operating conditions that had been unstable without feedback. A 10 percent decrease in the stalling flow coefficient was obtained using the control strategy, and the extension of stable flow range was achieved with no measurable change in the steady-state performance of the compression system. The experiments demonstrate the first use of aeromechanical feedback to extend the stable operating range of an axial flow compressor, and the first use of local feedback and dynamic compensation techniques to suppress rotating stall. The design of the experiment was based on a two-dimensional stall inception model, which incorporated the effect of the aeromechanical feedback. The physical mechanism for rotating stall in axial flow compressors was examined with focus on the role of dynamic feedback in stabilizing compression system instability. As predicted and experimentally demonstrated, the effectiveness of the aeromechanical control strategy depends on a set of nondimensional control parameters that determine the interaction of the control strategy and the rotating stall dynamics.

The pressure fluctuations and the radial fluid forces acting on the impeller, the pressures in the volute, as well as the vibration of the shaft in a centrifugal pump were measured simultaneously, and their relationship was investigated. Experiments were done for various diffuser vanes, flow rates, and rotating speeds. It was demonstrated that both the blade-pressure fluctuations and the volute static pressures are nonuniform circumferentially (not axisymmetrical) under off-design operating conditions and that the two have a strong relationship. At high flow rates, the blade pressure fluctuations, induced by rotor-stator interactions, are large in areas where the volute static pressure is low. The traveling directions of the rotating pressure waves, the whirling directions of the radial fluid forces, and the most predominant frequency components of both the fluctuations and the forces are discussed, and an equation for predicting them is introduced. It was also noted that large alternating fluid forces are not necessarily associated with large pressure fluctuations. Furthermore, when measuring the radial fluid forces in the rotating frame, other frequency components, in addition to those related to the products of the diffuser vane number and the rotating frequency, may occur due to the circumferential unevenness of the pressure fluctuations on the impeller. These components are predictable.
