This paper discusses flow measurement results both upstream and downstream of a transonic annular turbine nozzle with a nonuniform pitch. The downstream measurements are performed in the plane, where the leading edge of the rotor is located in the gas turbine. The experiments were performed using total pressure probes and static wall pressure taps. This type of nonuniformity creates a different behavior of the flow field both upstream and downstream of the blades. The effects on the wakes and on the inviscid flow are discussed separately. The mean velocities show a strong sensitivity to the changes of the pitch, which is identified as a potential flow effect by using a simple vortex model.

The pitch variation modifies the flow field both upstream and downstream of the nozzle, although the experiments show that the effect is localized to the immediate neighborhood of the involved blades. The effects on the wakes and on the inviscid flow are discussed separately. The mean velocities show a strong sensitivity to the changes of the pitch, which is due to a potential flow effect rather than a viscous effect.

With the desire for increased power output for a gas turbine engine comes the continual push to achieve higher turbine inlet temperatures. Higher temperatures result in large thermal and mechanical stresses particularly along the nozzle guide vane. One critical region along a vane is the leading edge-endwall juncture. Based on the assumption that the approaching flow to this juncture is similar to a two-dimensional boundary layer, previous studies have shown that a horseshoe vortex forms. This vortex forms because of a radial total pressure gradient from the approaching boundary layer. This paper documents the computational design and experimental validation of a fillet placed at the leading edge-endwall juncture of a guide vane to eliminate the horseshoe vortex. The fillet design effectively accelerated the incoming boundary layer thereby mitigating the effect of the total pressure gradient. To verify the CFD studies used to design the leading edge fillet, flow field measurements were performed in a large-scale, linear, vane cascade. The flow field measurements were performed with a laser Doppler velocimeter in four planes orientated orthogonal to the vane. Good agreement between the CFD predictions and the experimental measurements verified the effectiveness of the leading edge fillet at eliminating the horseshoe vortex. The flowfield results showed that the turbulent kinetic energy levels were significantly reduced in the endwall region because of the absence of the unsteady horseshoe vortex.

In the combustor inlet diffuser section of gas turbine engine, high-velocity air from compressor flows into the diffuser, where a considerable portion of the inlet velocity head PT3 − PS3 is converted to static pressure (PS) before the airflow enters the combustor. Modern high through-flow turbine engine compressors are highly loaded and usually have high inlet Mach numbers. With high compressor exit Mach numbers, the velocity head at the compressor exit station may be as high as 10% of the total pressure. The function of the diffuser is to recover a large proportion of this energy. Otherwise, the resulting higher total pressure loss would result in a significantly higher level of engine specific fuel consumption. The diffuser performance must also be sensitive to inlet velocity profiles and geometrical variations of the combustor relative to the location of the pre-diffuser exit flow path. Low diffuser pressure losses with high Mach numbers are more rapidly achieved with increasing length. However, diffuser length must be short to minimize engine length and weight. A good diffuser design should have a well considered balance between the confliction requirements for low pressure losses and short engine lengths. The present paper describes the effect of divergence angle on diffuser performance for gas turbine combustion chamber using Computational Fluid Dynamic Approach. The flow through the diffuser is numerically solved for divergence angles ranging from 5 to 25°. The flow separation and formation of wake regions are studied.

Aero-gas turbine engines with a mixed exhaust configuration offer significant benefits to the cycle efficiency relative to separate exhaust systems, such as increase in gross thrust and a reduction in fan pressure ratio required. A number of military and civil engines have a single mixed exhaust system designed to mix out the bypass and core streams. To reduce mixing losses, the two streams are designed to have similar total pressures. In design point whole engine performance solvers, a mixed exhaust is modelled using simple assumptions; momentum balance and a percentage total pressure loss. However at far off-design conditions such as windmilling and altitude relights, the bypass and core streams have very dissimilar total pressures and momentum, with the flow preferring to pass through the bypass duct, increasing drastically the bypass ratio. Mixing of highly dissimilar coaxial streams leads to complex turbulent flow fields for which the simple assumptions and models used in current performance solvers cease to be valid. The effect on simulation results is significant since the nozzle pressure affects critical aspects such as the fan operating point, and therefore the windmilling shaft speeds and air mass flow rates. This paper presents a numerical study on the performance of a lobed mixer under windmilling conditions. An analysis of the flow field is carried out at various total mixer pressure ratios, identifying the onset and nature of recirculation, the flow field characteristics, and the total pressure loss along the mixer as a function of the operating conditions. The data generated from the numerical simulations is used together with a probabilistic approach to generate a response surface in terms of the mass averaged percentage total pressure loss across the mixer, as a function of the engine operating point. This study offers an improved understanding on the complex flows that arise from mixing of highly dissimilar coaxial flows within an aero-gas turbine mixer environment. The total pressure response surface generated using this approach can be used as look-up data for the engine performance solver to include the effects of such turbulent mixing losses.

The vortex–body interaction problem, which characterizes the flow field of a rudder placed downstream of a single-blade marine rotor, is investigated by numerical simulations. The particular topology of the propeller wake, consisting of a helicoidal vortex detached from the blade tips (tip vortex) and a longitudinal, streamwise oriented vortex originating at the hub (hub vortex), embraces two representative mechanisms of vortex–body collisions: the tip vortices impact almost orthogonally to the mean plane, whereas the hub vortex travels in the mean plane of the wing (rudder), perpendicularly to its leading edge. The two vortices evolve independently only during the approaching and collision phases. The passage along the body is instead characterized by strong interaction with the boundary layer on the rudder and is followed by reconnection and merging in the middle and far wake. The features of the wake were investigated by the $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{2}$-criterion (Jeong & Hussain, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 285, 1995, pp. 69–94) and typical flow variables (pressure, velocity and vorticity) of the instantaneous flow field; wall pressure spectra were analysed and related to the tip and hub vortices evolution, revealing a non-obvious behaviour of the loading on the rudder that can be related to undesired unsteady loads.

Abstract This paper presents numerical investigations of the amplitude-dependent stability behavior of thermoacoustic oscillations at screech level frequencies in a lean-premixed, swirl-stabilized, lab-scale gas turbine combustor. A hybrid Computational Fluid Dynamics / Computational AeroAcoustics (CFD / CAA) approach is applied to individually compute thermoacoustic damping and driving rates for various acoustic amplitude levels at the combustors' first transversal (T1) eigenfrequency. Forced CFD simulations with the Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations mimic the real combustor's rotating T1 eigenmode. An increase of the forcing amplitude over time allows observation of the amplitude-dependent flow field and flame evolution. In accordance with measured OH*-chemiluminescence images, a pulsation amplitude-dependent flame contraction is reproduced in the CFD simulations. At several amplitude levels, period-averaged flow fields are then denoted as reference states, which serve as inputs for the CAA part. There, eigenfrequency simulations with linearized flow equations are performed with the Finite Element Method (FEM). The outcomes are damping and driving rates as a response to the amplitude-dependency of the mean flow field. It is found that driving due to flame-acoustics interactions governs a weak amplitude-dependency, which agrees with experimentally based studies at the authors' institute. This disqualifies the perception of heat release saturation as the root-cause for limit-cycle oscillations in this high-frequency thermoacoustic system. Instead, significantly increased dissipation due to the interaction of acoustically induced vorticity perturbations with the mean flow is identified, which may explain the formation of a limit-cycle.

The ultra-micro scale gas turbine (UMGT) is an ongoing area of research, as an alternate power source for portable electronic devices. To advance our understanding that will help in its development, this paper focuses on a numerical analysis via computational fluid dynamics (CFD) of flow through a 3 dimensional (3D) blade profiled UMGT turbine. CFD modelling was based off an integrated turbine that consists of a volute, nozzle guide vanes (NGV) and rotor. Firstly, the flow through the integrated system as well as each component was analyzed. Secondly, the turbine was simulated under three different isothermal conditions and compared to the adiabatic situation, in order to understand the loss mechanisms. Lastly, the effect of tip clearance was studied, where it was varied between 0–10% of the blade height. CFD results showed, the flow through the turbine was quite well behaved, however separation of flow at the NGV leading edge, and residual swirl at the rotor trailing edge, were observed. The effects of the isothermal wall boundary condition was very pronounced at the volute and NGV, resulting in a large amount of good heat to be conducted away, at the rotor however conduction was only a percentage of the viscous heat generated. Lastly tip clearance proved to have a linearly detrimental effect on power.

This paper presents the results of a numerical simulation of the time-averaged inviscid flow field through the blade rows of a multiblade row turboprop configuration. The governing equations are outlined along with a discussion of the solution procedure and coding strategy. Numerical results obtained from a simulation of the flow field through a modern high-speed turboprop will be shown.

This paper discusses the linearized theory of unsteady flow through a two-dimensional aperture in a thin plate in the presence of a grazing mean flow on one side of the plate. The mean shear layer is modelled by a vortex sheet, and it is predicted that at low mean-flow Mach numbers there is a transfer of energy from the mean flow to the disturbed motion of the vortex sheet provided (i) the Kutta condition is imposed at the leading edge of the aperture, resulting in the unsteady shedding of vorticity from the edge, and (ii) the width of the aperture 2s satisfies ½ < 2s/λ < 1.1, where λ is the hydrodynamic wavelength of the disturbance on the vortex sheet within the aperture. The theory is used to examine the effect of mean shear on the diffraction of sound by a perforated screen, and to predict the spontaneous excitation and suppression of self-sustained oscillations in a wall-cavity beneath a nominally steady mean flow. In the latter case support for the proposed theory is provided by a favourable comparison of theoretical results with experimental data available in the literature.

Increasing turbine inlet temperature is one of the main strategies used to accomplish the demands of increased performance of modern gas turbines. As a consequence, optimization of the cooling system is of paramount importance in gas turbine development. Leading edge represents a critical part of cooled nozzles and blades, given the presence of the hot gases stagnation point and the unfavourable geometry for cooling. This paper reports the results of a numerical investigation aimed at assessing the rotation effects on the heat transfer distribution in a realistic leading edge internal cooling system of a high pressure gas turbine blade. The numerical investigation was carried out in order to support and to allow an in-depth understanding of the results obtained in a parallel experimental campaign. The model is composed of a trapezoidal feeding channel which provides air to the cold bridge system by means of three large racetrack-shaped holes, generating coolant impingement on the internal concave leading edge surface, whereas four big fins assure the jets confinement. Air is then extracted through 4 rows of 6 holes reproducing the external cooling system composed of shower-head and film cooling holes. Experiments were performed in static and rotating conditions replicating the typical range of jet Reynolds number (Rej) from 10000 to 40000 and Rotation number (Roj) up to 0.05, for three crossflow cases representative of the working condition that can be found at blade tip, midspan and hub, respectively. Experimental results in terms of flow field measurements on several internal planes and heat transfer coefficient on the LE internal surface have been performed on two analogous experimental campaigns at University of Udine and University of Florence respectively. Hybrid RANS-LES models were used for the simulations, such as Scale Adaptive Simulation (SAS) and Detached Eddy Simulation (DES), given their ability to resolve the complex flow field associated with jet impingement. Numerical flow field results are reported in terms of both jet velocity profiles and 2D vector plots on symmetry and transversal internal planes, while the heat transfer coefficient distributions are presented as detailed 2D maps together with radial and tangential averaged Nusselt number profiles. A fairly good agreement with experimental measurements is observed, which represent a validation of the adopted computational model. As a consequence, the computed aerodynamic and thermal fields also allow an in-depth interpretation of the experimental results.
