Abstract In design synthesis, engineering prototypes make an ideal representation medium for preliminary designs. Unlike parametric design wherein a pre-specified design is parametrically varied, design synthesis demands artistic creativity and engineering experience to transform the previously known components, relationships and designs into a new form. The process compels the designer to ascertain which prototypes will, in some sense, best satisfy the design task. The challenge in this assignment lies in selecting the “right” design prototype. This selection process typically entails an objective evaluation of different designs that perform the same functions or have similar intended behavior and comparing trade-offs between alternate designs. This paper introduces a multi-objective spectral optimization algorithm for the selection of design prototypes based upon their functional representations. The optimization algorithm returns an index of rank, scoring the functional similarity of the proposed design to the goal design. Two illustrative examples apply the algorithm to the selection of a heat fin and beam.

In early design phases, it is vital to be able to screen the design space for a set of promising design alternatives for further study. This article presents a method able to balance several objectives of different mathematical natures, with high impact on the design choices. The method (MOSART) handles multi-objective optimization for safety and reliability trade-offs. The article focuses on optimization problem approach and processing of results as a base for decision-making. The output of the optimization step is the selection of specific system elements obtaining the best balance between the targets. However, what is a good base for decision can easily transform into too much information and overloading of the decision-maker. To solve this potential issue, from a set of Pareto optimal solutions, a smaller sub-set of selected solutions are visualized and filtered out using preference levels of the objectives, yielding a solid base for decision-making and valuable information on potential solutions. Trends were observed regarding each system element and discussed while processing the results of the analysis, supporting the decision of one final best solution.

Antenna systems play a critical role in establishing wireless communication links and sustaining remote sensing requirements for Cubesat applications. In addition to the usual antenna design requirements, Cubesat-based spacecrafts impose additional stringent constraints related to the on-board available space, power consumption and development costs. To develop optimal antenna prototypes while considering all these constraints and decrease trial and error related costs, computational electromagnetics (CEM) simulation tools are used. The accuracy of simulation results depends to a great extent on the choice of the appropriate CEM tool for the particular antenna problem to be analyzed; ergo, identifying and answering key questions about design objectives and requirements is necessary for informed decision-making throughout the selection and design processes. However, this could be quite challenging because of existing gaps both in the practitioners’ knowledge about different CEM tools capabilities, limitations, and design know-how. This is especially true for non-specialists such as students and academics involved in student driven Cubesat projects. Therefore, the rationale of this manuscript is to bridge those gaps and clarify some common misconception commonly encountered during the selection and design processes. In that regard, first, an overview of existing antenna configurations commonly used in Cubesat communications is provided. Next, antenna design general workflow is presented. Then, capabilities and limitations of different CEM solving methods are presented. After that, CEM software selection process trade-offs and possible sources of errors are discussed from a practical viewpoint. Finally, a case study of Masat-1 antenna system design is presented as practical example.

All organization or company needs human resources in carrying out every function of activity. The need of human resources is very important because in gaining superior human resources cannot be obtained easily; it takes a way to get the right labor to fill a certain position by selection. It is hoped that by doing this process, we will get reliable human resources, which are needed to meet the needs of the organization in the present and future. Selection activities are conducted in the framework of community service activities. The target of community service is to accompany the company so that prospective new employees who follow the selection process at the psychological test stage can complete all the test stages. The selection of superintendent assistant positions is done by the Psychology Test Method (to reveal aspects of intelligence, work attitude, and personality), Leaderless Group Discussion (LGD), and Psychological Interview. This test was followed by 203 participants. As a result of the whole process, 136 participants were graduated. Key words:selection, employees, assistant superintendent.

This paper describes an improved chain link tension model for a simple two-sprocket roller chain drive. The model includes modified versions of previous models of the tension in the chain links, together with a new model for low-slack span tensions. The model allows the tension of a link to be calculated at any point in the chain drive more quickly and for a wider range of tight and slack span tensions than before. A new chain efficiency model is formulated, based on the losses due to sliding friction. Coupled with the chain link tension model, this can be used to predict the transmission efficiency of a chain. Experimental work undertaken on 0.5 in pitch industrial roller chains and bicycle chains has demonstrated that the chain efficiency model is accurate for moderate and high torque transmissions. At low torque, losses due to impact, adhesion and/or vibration become more significant and impair the accuracy of the model, particularly for heavier, industrial roller chains. The chain efficiency model enables certain design trade-offs to be carried out, such as the selection of the size of the overall system to achieve the right balance of transmission efficiency and weight.

Purpose The importance of international markets has increased in the past years and will further increase in the future. This offers potential for being competitive, but especially for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is going along with a variety of risks, e.g. the competition in the domestic market intensifies. Nevertheless, in most cases, SMEs with foreign operations are more successful than SME operating solely in the domestic markets. Nevertheless, the internationalization activities of SME are often unsystematic and emotional, especially when looking for distribution partners. The research project “Empirical based development of an instrument for identifying and making decisions about the choice of market entry and the selection of distribution partners of SME of the tool and cutlery industry when developing foreign markets” deals with this topic. In this paper the results of a literature review and an expert discussion regarding market development and especially the process of finding distribution partners for foreign markets are presented. Also, further steps in the project dealing with aspects of realizing the detected success factors by using quality management methods are explained. Design/methodology/approach The first step comprises a literature review and an expert discussion with leading managers of SME, with the aim to receive information about market entry decisions and selection of distribution partners. Therefore, a literature review and an expert discussion with leading managers of SME are carried out. The discussions are evaluated with MAXQDA©, a software for qualitative data analysis. Next, a questionnaire is designed for a quantitative analysis of the topic and will be evaluated by using SMART-PLS. Then, the results will be used as input variable for a quality function deployment for identifying appropriate measures for implementing the prior identified success factors. Thereby, also quality management methods and techniques will be used for finding the “right” measures. In this context, also a method for selecting distribution partners will be developed which is based on the logic of supplier evaluation. Finally, an Excel-based tool will be developed which includes the results of the project and allows companies easily applying them. Findings A literature review and an expert discussion within the tool and cutlery industry have been carried out and analysed. Thereby, the need for action regarding the selection of distribution partners has been revealed as essential step for success in foreign markets. Literature mostly deals with aspects like choosing appropriate countries for market entry and market entry strategy but not with distribution partners. Expert discussion also has shown that choosing distribution partners is often managed with gut feel. It lacks a criteria-based approach for optimizing this step during the internalization process. Originality/value Finding adequate distribution partners for a successful entry into foreign markets has not been investigated thoroughly yet. The project offers insights into determining factors for the selection process and improves the distribution partner selection by using quality management methods, for instance, by adapting the fundamental procedure of supplier assessment for distribution partner assessment.

Data processing in the determination of scholarships in SMK Madyatama to date still use a system that is still manual. Where the absence of a well-computerized system in determining the acceptance of scholarship which then led to the emergence of some problems in this manual system. The problem that often arises is not exactly the distribution of scholarships to students. Problems like this are triggered by the lack of scrutiny of the scholarship selectors in conducting the selection process of the scholarship recipients, which is basically the selection process conducted by teachers from the school itself. The decision-making system at SMK Madyatama will be made using TOPSIS method to determine the right scholarship recipient in accordance with the scholarship recipient criteria. With the decision support system of awarding scholarship recipients at SMK Madyatama Palembang based on this website can help and facilitate the school in evaluating the selection of scholarship receipt.

<p>The use of a framework is often essential for medium and large scale developments, but is also of interest for small developments. PHP has evolved as the scripting language the most chosen by developers, which has generated an explosion of PHP frameworks. There is a big debate about what the best PHP frameworks are, because the simple fact is that not all frameworks are built for everyone. Indeed, not all frameworks meet the same needs, and several frameworks can be used together in certain situations. Choosing the right framework, however, can sometimes be difficult. In order to make the selection process easier, we propose a pragmatic and complete model to compare and evaluate the main PHP frameworks. This model is based on a set of comparison criteria based on the Intrinsic durability, industrialized solution, technical adaptability, strategy, technical architecture and Speed criteria. Results show that the values of these criteria allow developers to easily and properly choose the framwork that best meets their needs</p>
