A viscoelastic nonlinear beam with cubic nonlinearities is considered. In order to obtain the equations of nonlinear motion of the beam for large deformation vibrations, the Lagrangian dynamics and Hamilton principle is used. It is considered that the beam vibrates in two directions, one in longitudinal direction and the other in the transverse direction. Large amplitude vibrations cause the nonlinearities in inertia and geometry terms. Also, due to viscoelastic property of the beam, a nonlinear damping term is appeared in the equations of motion. Using the condition of inextensible beams, the equation of motion and boundary conditions of bending vibration of a Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic beam has been obtained. Finally, if one considers the damping coefficient to be equal to zero in the obtained equation of motion of viscoelastic system then, an equation of motion for the elastic beam will be obtained.

Abstract The “pole-skipping” phenomenon reflects that the retarded Green’s function is not unique at a pole-skipping point in momentum space (ω, k). We explore the universality of pole-skipping in different geometries. In holography, near horizon analysis of the bulk equation of motion is a more straightforward way to derive a pole-skipping point. We use this method in Lifshitz, AdS2 and Rindler geometries. We also study the complex hydrodynamic analyses and find that the dispersion relations in terms of dimensionless variables $$ \frac{\omega }{2\pi T} $$ ω 2 πT and $$ \frac{\left|k\right|}{2\pi T} $$ k 2 πT pass through pole-skipping points $$ \left(\frac{\omega_n}{2\pi T},\frac{\left|{k}_n\right|}{2\pi T}\right) $$ ω n 2 πT k n 2 πT at small ω and k in the Lifshitz background. We verify that the position of the pole-skipping points does not depend on the standard quantization or alternative quantization of the boundary theory in AdS2× ℝd−1 geometry. In the Rindler geometry, we cannot find the corresponding Green’s function to calculate pole-skipping points because it is difficult to impose the boundary condition. However, we can still obtain “special points” near the horizon where bulk equations of motion have two incoming solutions. These “special points” correspond to the nonuniqueness of the Green’s function in physical meaning from the perspective of holography.

Vibration of a statically loaded, inherently compensated hydrostatic journal bearing due to oscillating exhaust pressure is investigated. Both angular and radial vibration modes are analyzed. The time-dependent Reynolds equation governing the pressure distribution between the oscillating journal and sleeve is solved together with the journal equation of motion to obtain the response characteristics of the bearing. The Reynolds equation and the equation of motion are simplified by applying regular perturbation theory for small displacements. The numerical solutions of the perturbation equations are obtained by discretizing the pressure field using finite-difference approximations with a discrete, nonuniform line-source model which excludes effects due to feeding hole volume. An iterative scheme is used to simultaneously satisfy the equations of motion for the journal. The results presented include Bode plots of bearing-oscillation gain and phase for a particular bearing configuration for various combinations of parameters over a range of frequencies, including the resonant frequency.

An application of the nonlinear saturation control (NSC) algorithm for a self-excited strongly nonlinear beam structure driven by an external force is presented in the paper. The mathematical model accounts for an Euler-Bernoulli beam with nonlinear curvature, reduced to first mode oscillations. It is assumed that the beam vibrates in the presence of a harmonic excitation close to the first natural frequency of the beam, and additionally the beam is self-excited by fluid flow, which is modelled by a nonlinear Rayleigh term for self-excitation. The self- and externally excited vibrations have been reduced by the application of an active, saturation-based controller. The approximate analytical solutions for a full structure have been found by the multiple time scales method, up to the first-order approximation. The analytical solutions have been compared with numerical results obtained from direct integration of the ordinary differential equations of motion. Finally, the influence of a negative damping term and the controller's parameters for effective vibrations suppression are presented.

In this paper the dynamic behavior of beam-like mechanism systems is investigated. The elastic beam is modeled by finite rigid segments connected by joint springs and dampers. The equations of motion are derived using Kane’s equations. The nonlinear terms are linearized by first order perturbation about a system balanced configuration state leading to geometric stiffness matrices. A simple numerical example of a rotating cantilever beam is presented.

This article concerns the free vibration of a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system with three types of nonlinear damping. One system considered is where the spring and the damper are connected to the mass so that they are orthogonal, and the vibration is in the direction of the spring. It is shown that, provided the displacement is small, this system behaves in a similar way to the conventional SDOF system with cubic damping, in which the spring and the damper are connected so they act in the same direction. For completeness, these systems are compared with a conventional SDOF system with quadratic damping. By transforming all the equations of motion of the systems so that the damping force is proportional to the product of a displacement dependent term and velocity, then all the systems can be directly compared. It is seen that the system with cubic damping is worse than that with quadratic damping for the attenuation of free vibration.

The dynamic response of an Euler-Bernoulli beam under moving loads is studied by mode superposition. The inertial effects of the moving load are included in the analysis. The time-dependent equations of motion in modal space are solved by the method of multiple scales. Instability regions of parametric resonance are identified and the moving mass effect is shown to significantly affect the transient response of the beam. Importance of modal interaction arising out of the possible internal resonance is highlighted. While the external resonance is due to the gravity effects of the moving load, the parametric and internal resonance solely depends on the load mass parameter—ratio of the moving load mass to the beam mass. Numerical results show the influence of the load inertia terms on the beam response under either a single moving load or a series of moving loads. [S0739-3717(00)01703-7]

In the present work, a Bernoulli – Euler beam fixed on a moving cart and carrying lumped tip mass subjected to external periodic force is considered. Such a model could describe the motion of structures like forklift vehicles or ladder cars that carry heavy loads and military airplane wings with storage loads on their span. The nonlinear equations of motion which describe the global motion as well as the vibration motion were derived using Lagrangian approach under the inextensibility condition. In order to investigate the influence of the axial movement of the cart on the response of the system, unconstrained modal analysis has been carried out, and accurate mode shapes of the beam deflection were obtained. The assumed mode method was utilized for approximating the beam elastic deformation based on the single unconstrained mode shapes. Numerical simulation has been carried out to estimate the open-loop response of the nonlinear beam-mass-cart model as well as for the simplified linear model under the influence of the periodic excitation force. Also a comparison study between the responses of the linear and nonlinear models was established. It was shown that the maximum values of the beam tip deflection estimated from the nonlinear model are lower than the corresponding values obtained via the linear model, which reveals the importance of considering nonlinear hardening term in formulating the equations of motion for such system in order to come with more accurate and reliable model.

The dynamic characteristics of a six bar hinge mechanism as used in home cabinets were investigated using the method of equation of motion. The derived equations of motion were numerically solved and the motion of the hinge mechanism was simulated. The influence of mass and width of the cabinet door on the dynamic characteristics of the hinge mechanism as well as the effect of the hinge number on the force applied on the handle were also investigated. The experimental and simulation results showed good agreement with an error of under 2%, which validated the simulation results. The proposed approach can be used by hinge manufacturers for the design and analysis of similar hinge mechanisms.

The intrinsic beam theory, as one of the exact beam formulas, is quite suitable to describe large deformation of the flexible curved beam and has been widely used in many engineering applications. Owing to the advantages of the intrinsic beam theory, the resulted equations are expressed in first-order partial differential form with second-order nonlinear terms. In order to solve the intrinsic beam equations in a relative simple way, in this paper, the point interpolation meshless method was employed to obtain the discretization equations of motion. Different from those equations by using the finite element method, only the differential of the shape functions are needed to form the final discrete equations. Thus, the present method does not need integration process for all elements during each time step. The proposed method has been demonstrated by a numerical example, and results show that this method is highly efficient in treating this type of problem with good accuracy.

The aim of this study is to analyze the quantum correlation of entangled photons for four-wavemixing process within Kerr nonlinear susceptibility χ(3) of an optical fiber ring resonator. The main system Hamiltonian composes of two types of coupling photon modes, including pumping and parametric-down conversion. Wigner representation is applied to the Heisenberg equation of motion derived from the system Hamiltonian in order to obtain the corresponding stochastic equations of motion in a c-number. Quantum trajectories obtained from the stochastic equation of motion of photon states are then derived. Finally, the entanglement inseparability criteria for a pair of entangled photonfrom a numerical approach is also satisfied.
