Correlation Between Impulse and Compliance Based Methods in Rigid Body Collisions

Impact problems arise in many practical applications. The need of obtaining an accurate model for the inelastic impact is a challenging problem. In general, two approaches are common in solving the impact problems: the impulse-momentum and the compliance based methods. The former approach included the coefficient of restitution which provides a mechanism to solve the problem explicitly. While the compliance methods are generally tailored to solve elastic problems, researchers in the field have proposed several mechanisms to include inelastic losses. In this paper, we present a correlation between the coefficient of restitution in the impulse-momentum based method and the contact stiffness in the compliance methods. We conducted numerical analysis to show that the resulting solutions are indeed identical for a wide range of impact conditions. The numerical results showed that, the two methods can produce similar outcomes if they satisfied a set of end conditions.

The numerical results showed that, the impulse-momentum and the compliance based methods can produce similar outcomes for specific range of coefficient of restitution if they satisfied a set of end conditions. The correlations lead to introduce a new contact force model with hysteresis damping for low coefficient of restitution impact.

Abstract In this study, we develop an analytical formula to approximate the damping coefficient as a function of the coefficient of restitution for a class of continuous contact models. The contact force is generated by a logical point-to-point force element consisting of a linear damper connected in parallel to a spring with Hertz force–penetration characteristic, while the exponent of deformation of the Hertz spring can vary between one and two. In this nonlinear model, it is assumed that the bodies start to separate when the contact force becomes zero. After separation, either the restitution continues or a permanent penetration is achieved. Therefore, this model is capable of addressing a wide range of impact problems. Herein, we apply an optimization strategy on the solution of the equations governing the dynamics of the penetration, ensuring that the desired restitution is reproduced at the time of separation. Furthermore, based on the results of the optimization process along with analytical investigations, the resulting optimal damping coefficient is analytically expressed at the time of impact in terms of system properties such as the effective mass, penetration velocity just before the impact, coefficient of restitution, and the characteristics of the Hertz spring model.

This paper complements several previous papers on modeling of the impact between two elastic bodies with a liquid lubricant. The main feature of the work is the efficient incorporation of various engineering aspects of the impact process making use of approximations consistent with the physical insights of the problem. The model can very efficiently calculate the impact load and the coefficient of restitution with reasonable accuracy for a wide range of the problem domain. The modeling concepts and methodology may be useful in future research on interdisciplinary analyses of the dynamics of mechanical systems in which the interactions are strong between vibrations of the components and impacts in the lubricated kinematic pairs.

A major challenge in studying impact problems analytically is solving the governing equations of impact events, which are mostly in the form of nonlinear ODEs. This paper focuses on the solution of nonlinear models for impact problems in asymptotic cases, where local indentation is significant. The asymptotic cases consist of both half-space and infinite plate impacts, which cover a wide range of practical impact events. A so-called force–indentation linearisation method (FILM), first described in a previous study, is reformulated here in a more general form in order to broaden its scope of application. The generalisation of the FILM facilitates stable and convergent solutions even when complex nonlinear contact models are used to estimate the impact force. Simulations based on the FILM approach are validated using numerical solutions.

In elastic systems, impulsive forces that act at a point on a deformable body produce stress waves that travel with finite speeds. This paper examines, both theoretically and numerically, the validity of using the generalized impulse momentum approach in modeling impact or collisions in the constrained motion of deformable bodies. The generalized impulse momentum equations that involve the coefficient of restitution and the kinematic constraint Jacobian matrix are used to predict the jump discontinuity in the velocity vector as well as the joint reaction forces. The series solutions obtained by solving these algebraic equations are used to establish a closed form relationship between the jump discontinuity in velocities and joint reactions due to impact and the number of elastic degrees of freedom. It is shown that by increasing the number of elastic coordinates these series converge to their limits. The convergence of these series is used to prove that the generalized impulse momentum equations with the coefficient of restitution can be used with confidence to study impact problems in constrained multibody systems consisting of interconnected rigid and deformable bodies. The results obtained are compared with the classical treatment of the impact problems in the theory of elasticity wherein the case of perfectly plastic impact is assumed.

The HB5 STEM instrument at ASU has been modified previously to include an efficient two-dimensional detector incorporating an optical analyser device and also a digital system for the recording of multiple images. The detector system was built to explore a wide range of possibilities including in-line electron holography, the observation and recording of diffraction patterns from very small specimen regions (having diameters as small as 3Å) and the formation of both bright field and dark field images by detection of various portions of the diffraction pattern. Experience in the use of this system has shown that sane of its capabilities are unique and valuable. For other purposes it appears that, while the principles of the operational modes may be verified, the practical applications are limited by the details of the initial design.

eamwork is becoming increasingly important to wide range of operations. It applies to all levels of the company. It is just as important for top executives as it is to middle management, supervisors and shop floor workers. Poor teamwork at any level or between levels can seriously damage organizational effectiveness. The focus of this paper was therefore to examine whether leadership practices consist of team leader behavior, conflict resolution style and openness in communication significantly influenced the team member’s satisfaction in hotel industry. Result indicates that team leader behavior and the conflict resolution style significantly influenced team member satisfaction. It was surprising that openness in communication did not affect significantly to the team members’ satisfaction.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare workers (HCWs) have been subject to increased workload while also exposed to many psychosocial stressors. In a systematic review we analyze the impact that the pandemic has had on HCWs mental state and associated risk factors. Most studies reported high levels of depression and anxiety among HCWs worldwide, however, due to a wide range of assessment tools, cut-off scores, and number of frontline participants in the studies, results were difficult to compare. Our study is based on two online surveys of 2195 HCWs from different regions of Russia during spring and autumn epidemic outbreaks revealed the rates of anxiety, stress, depression, emotional exhaustion and depersonalization and perceived stress as 32.3%, 31.1%, 45.5%, 74.2%, 37.7% ,67.8%, respectively. Moreover, 2.4% of HCWs reported suicidal thoughts. The most common risk factors include: female gender, nurse as an occupation, younger age, working for over 6 months, chronic diseases, smoking, high working demands, lack of personal protective equipment, low salary, lack of social support, isolation from families, the fear of relatives getting infected. These results demonstrate the need for urgent supportive programs for HCWs fighting COVID-19 that fall into higher risk factors groups.

Every aspect of human operations faces a wide range of risks, some of which can cause serious consequences. By the start of 21st century, mankind has recognized a new class of risks posed by climate change. It is obvious, that the global climate is changing, and will continue to change, in ways that affect the planning and day to day operations of businesses, government agencies and other organizations and institutions. The manifestations of climate change include but not limited to rising sea levels, increasing temperature, flooding, melting polar sea ice, adverse weather events (e.g. heatwaves, drought, and storms) and a rise in related problems (e.g. health and environmental). Assessing and managing climate risks represent one of the most challenging issues of today and for the future. The purpose of the risk modeling system discussed in this paper is to provide a framework and methodology to quantify risks caused by climate change, to facilitate estimates of the impact of climate change on various spheres of human activities and to compare eventual adaptation and risk mitigation strategies. The system integrates both physical climate system and economic models together with knowledge-based subsystem, which can help support proactive risk management. System structure and its main components are considered. Special attention is paid to climate risk assessment, management and hedging in the Arctic coastal areas.

The Tonsillectomy in children or adults is an intervention commonly encountered in the ENT (Ear Nose and Throat) and Head and Neck surgeon practice. The current tendency is to perform this type of surgery in major ambulatory surgery centers. Two objectives are thus pursued: first of all, the increase of the patient quality of life through the reintegration into the family as quickly as possible and secondly, the expenses associated with continuous hospitalization are reduced. Any tertiary (multidisciplinary) sleep center must ensure the complete diagnosis and treatment (including surgery) of sleep respiratory disorders. Under these conditions the selection of patients and especially the implementation of the specific protocols in order to control the postoperative complications it becomes essential. The present paper describes our experience of tonsillectomy as treatment for selected patients with chronic rhonchopathy (snoring) and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea. It was presented the impact of antibiotics protocols in reducing the main morbid outcomes following tonsillectomy, in our day surgery center. The obtained results can also be a prerequisite for the integrative approach of the patients with sleep apnoea who were recommended surgical treatment. Considering the wide range of therapeutic modalities used in sleep apnoea, each with its specific advantages and disadvantages, more extensive and multicenter studies are needed.
