Improving Quality of Train Interiors Through a VR-Based Participative Design Approach

In this work we apply an innovative participative design approach for the quality evaluation of virtual prototypes of new industrial products (i.e. concept designs), by adopting statistical procedures and carrying out tests in an immersive VR environment. This methodology has been fully exploited through a case study concerning the choice of the optimal design for the interiors of a new regional train. Following this approach, the optimal concept design is defined at the end of a process consisting of five phases: identification of the quality elements of the concept design, classification of the quality elements, generation and quality evaluation of product concepts and, finally, definition of the optimal concept. According to the applied methodology after the identification of the customer’s needs, a structured set of quality elements has been defined and, successively, classified according to Kano’s theory. Following the approach of conjoint analysis, the design factors have been combined according to an experimental plan to form product virtual concepts. During the concepts generation phase we have explored those product architectures that integrate design characteristics correlated to the set of quality elements. The concepts have been created according to comfort, ergonomic and safety criteria. In particular we have considered the ergonomics of places and furniture dimensions, through the use of virtual manikins. The evaluation of the quality of the different concepts has been carried out in the VR laboratory (named “VRTest”) of the Competence Centre for the Qualification of Transportation Systems founded by Regione Campania according to an original statistical procedure and has involved a group of experts in train’s interiors design and a group of common users of regional trains.

The objective of this work is to present a design approach for the Concept and Preliminary Design Phases of Storage SPAR Buoy Platforms and to describe how the design method was developed. The influence of a VIV porosity device on the design is taken into consideration. The inherent advantages of Spar concepts for Petrobras’ applications for 1250 m, are discussed and compared with other concepts. The Spar concept was chosen. The design method development was carried out by means of a brainstorming process, using sketches and the creation of interactive flowcharts of the design processes (similar to a design spiral) comprising the main design factors, their sequencing and interrelations, for both the Concept and Preliminary Design phases. The intent of the design approach is to provide the designer with means to define quick and efficiently the optimal hull dimensions for a pre-established scenario. For the Concept Design, the method includes the definition of the main dimensions, the Wellbay, the structural topology and compartmentation, general arrangement, weight control, stability (intact, damaged and flooded), motions and mooring. A discussion on the influence of the VIV porosity device on the dimensioning and mooring of the Spar Platform is provided. A concept design application example is presented.

With the rapid development of computer aided technology, the application of model based definition (MBD) in the research and development (R&D) processes of aerospace products become more and more widespread. The quality of MBD refers to its ability to meet the requirements of the downstream processes like subsequent design, manufacture, simulation, and inspection etc. Based on MBD’s quality characteristics, such as modeling and simulation quality, design process quality, geometry and topology quality, data quality and data exchange quality, this paper constructs a quality model for aerospace digital products and proposes both qualitative and quantitative quality evaluation methods for MBD of aerospace products.

During the past investigations of immunoferritin localization of intracellular antigens in ultrathin frozen sections, we found that the degree of negative staining required to delineate u1trastructural details was often too dense for the recognition of ferritin particles. The quality of positive staining of ultrathin frozen sections, on the other hand, has generally been far inferior to that attainable in conventional plastic embedded sections, particularly in the definition of membranes. As we discussed before, a main cause of this difficulty seemed to be the vulnerability of frozen sections to the damaging effects of air-water surface tension at the time of drying of the sections.Indeed, we found that the quality of positive staining is greatly improved when positively stained frozen sections are protected against the effects of surface tension by embedding them in thin layers of mechanically stable materials at the time of drying (unpublished).

The article describes the results of comprehensive study aiming at increase of quality of LED luminaires and definition of the nature of changes in their correlated colour temperature (CCT) in the course of operation. Dependences of CCT of LED luminaires with remote and close location of phosphor for 10 thousand hours of operation in different electric modes were obtained; the results of comparison between the initial and final radiation spectra of the luminaires are presented; using mathematical statistics methods, variation of luminaire CCT over the service period claimed by the manufacturer is forecast; the least favourable electric operation modes with the highest CCT variation observed are defined. The obtained results have confirmed availability of the problem of variation of CCT of LED luminaires during their operation. Possible way of its resolution is application of more qualitative and therefore expensive LEDs with close proximity of phosphor or LEDs with remote phosphor. The article may be interesting both for manufacturers and consumers of LED light sources and lighting devices using them.

Subject. The article considers functioning and development of process flows of transportation and logistics system of a smart city. Objectives. The study identifies factors and dependencies of the quality of human life on the organization and management of stream processes. Methods. I perform a comparative analysis of previous studies, taking into account the uniquely designed results, and the econometric analysis. Results. The study builds multiple regression models that are associated with stream processes, highlights interdependent indicators of temporary traffic and pollution that affect the indicator of life quality. However, the identified congestion indicator enables to predict the time spent in traffic jams per year for all participants of stream processes. Conclusions. The introduction of modern intelligent transportation systems as a component of the transportation and logistics system of a smart city does not fully solve the problems of congestion in cities at the current rate of urbanization and motorization. A viable solution is to develop cooperative and autonomous intelligent transportation systems based on the logistics approach. This will ensure control over congestion, the reduction of which will contribute to improving the life quality of people in urban areas.

На основе анализа результатов экспериментальных исследований определены наиболее оптимальные режимы работы экспериментального картофелекопателя.Research results of an experimental potato digger with rotational separating web are published in this article. Special attention is paid to definition of design characteristics and performance data of the new separating device. Admissible operating modes are defined on the basis of the analysis of results of pilot studies of the experimental potato digger.

The definition of the multimorbidity concept reveals insufficient specificity of the comorbidity and multimorbidity definitions and, as a result, confusion in the use of these terms. Most authors are unanimous that the “core” of multimorbidity is presence of more than one disease in a patient. These coexisting diseases can be pathogenetically interconnected and non-interconnected. Regardless, the degree of multimorbidity always affects prognosis and quality of life.

Both external and internal quality of fruits such as tomatoes can be evaluated by different methods, but all most all of the methods are destructive. For this reason, there is a need to reassess some of the alternative techniques. Nondestructive quality evaluation is an attractive alternative. The principles of different nondestructive quality evaluation techniques such as optical, physical, and fluorescence techniques applied to tomato fruit is explained. Successful application of these techniques that could be used for evaluation of different quality attributes are illustrated. The advantages of nondestructive quality evaluation techniques are that they are very fast, easy, labor- and time-intensive, and inexpensive. These techniques could also be useful to evaluate the quality of other vegetables.
