Boundary Conditions for Vortex CFD Simulations

The aim of this research is to identify a method of prescribing boundary conditions for CFD studies of vortex ingestion. The work illustrates the use of a validated vortex model which has been shown to give good agreement with experimental data. The model is used to generate the vortex velocity and pressure distributions. Prior knowledge of the vortex strength, core radius, Vatistas model constant, and maximum axial velocity perturbation is required. The model has been generalized, which allows any vortex location on the inlet boundary to be specified. Two examples are given. The first case is for a convecting wing-tip vortex. The second is for a ground vortex prescribed at the inlet of the compressor system. The ground vortex model is based on experimental data as well as previous validated CFD studies. A preliminary assessment of the effect of ground vortex ingestion on the performance of NASA Rotor 67 is carried out using the boundary conditions proposed. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis on the boundary condition components was completed. The use of such boundary conditions can reduce the resource requirements and enables the independent specification of a vortical flow distortion for controlled parametric investigations of intake or compressor sensitivity studies.

SummaryAn improved technique for the use of a five-hole yaw probe has been used in determining velocity, vorticity and pressure distributions over a transverse plane five chords downstream of a lifting wing. A well-defined tip vortex is shown to exist, together with a vortex sheet which contains a significant proportion of the total vorticity. The vorticity distribution is compared with that predicted by the calculation of vortex sheet roll-up using a two-dimensional array of line vortices. Good agreement is obtained, and the validity of using time steps large enough to inhibit the chaotic motion found in some calculations of this type is demonstrated. The structure of the tip vortex is found to be well described by the turbulent vortex model of Hoffman and Joubert.

The earlier proposed general approach for description of the non-ideal mixer is coupled with corresponding boundary conditions for the closed system. Some simplifications in this procedure result in relations which are in agreement with experimental data.

The paper deals with methods of equivalence of boundary conditions in finite element models that are based on finite element model updating technique. The proposed methods are based on the determination of the stiffness parameters in the section plate or region, where the boundary condition or the removed part of the model is replaced by the bushing connector. Two methods for determining its elastic properties are described. In the first case, the stiffness coefficients are determined by a series of static finite element analyses that are used to obtain the response of the removed part to the six basic types of loads. The second method is a combination of experimental and numerical approaches. The natural frequencies obtained by the measurement are used in finite element (FE) optimization, in which the response of the model is tuned by changing the stiffness coefficients of the bushing. Both methods provide a good estimate of the stiffness at the region where the model is replaced by an equivalent boundary condition. This increases the accuracy of the numerical model and also saves computational time and capacity due to element reduction.

Vortex Induced Vibration (VIV) prediction is one of the key areas of interest in Deepwater Riser Engineering. Several Joint Industry Projects (JIPs) are currently in progress in this field, which results in an increase of experimental data available to design engineers, in revisions of specialized software and in development of new engineering tools. This paper presents VIV predictions for a hypothetical Steel Catenary Riser (SCR) using the latest versions of the SHEAR7 and the VIVA/VIVARRAY Programs. Both built-in and extended program capabilities are utilized and detailed plots of computation results are presented. Sensitivity studies on the influence of variations of selected design parameters are also included in the paper. Finite Element Analyses (FEAs) results and simple engineering tools were utilized in parallel to built-in program features. The calculations demonstrated, that for the riser investigated and presumably also for a wide variety of similar SCRs, that the built in program features are sufficient to predict VIVs conservatively. Notes on VIV predictions in a real ocean and on selected areas that require investigation are also included.

In this paper, a slotted tip structure is experimentally analyzed. A wind turbine with three blades, of which the radius is 301.74mm, is investigated by the PIV method. Each wind turbine blade is formed with a slots system comprising four internal tube members embedded in the blade. The inlets of the internal tube member are located at the leading edge of the blade and form an inlet array. The outlets are located at the blade tip face and form an outlet array. The near wake flow field of the wind turbine with slotted tip and without slotted tip are both measured. Velocity field of near wake region and clear images of the tip vortex are captured under different wake ages. The experimental results show that the radius of the tip vortex core is enlarged by the slotted tip at any wake age compared with that of original wind turbine. Moreover, the diffusion process of the tip vortex is accelerated by the slotted tip which lead to the disappearance of the tip vortex occurs at smaller wake age. The strength of the tip vortex is also reduced indicating that the flow field in the near wake of wind turbine is improved. The experimental data are further analyzed with the vortex core model to reveal the flow mechanism of this kind of flow control method. The turbulence coefficient of the vortex core model for wind turbine is obtained from the experimental data of the wind turbine with and without slotted tip. It shows that the slotted tip increases the turbulence strength in the tip vortex core by importing airflow into the tip vortex core during its initial generation stage, which leads to the reduction of the tip vortex strength. Therefore, it is promising that the slotted tip can be used to weaken the vorticity and accelerate the diffusion of the tip vortex which would improve the problem caused by the tip vortex.

In this paper, a calculation method based on matlab partial differential equations (PDE) tool is proposed to investigate the static characteristics of aerostatic spherical bearings. The Reynolds equation of aerostatic spherical bearings is transformed into a standard elliptic equation. The effects of geometric parameters and operational conditions on the film pressure, bearing film force, and stiffness are studied. The axial and radial eccentricities result in different film pressure distributions; the bearing film force and stiffness are significantly influenced by geometric parameters and operational conditions. The relative optimal parameters are confirmed based on the calculation results. A comparison between the numerical and experimental results is also presented. The highest relative error between the numerical results and the experimental data is 11.3%; the calculation results show good agreements with the experimental data, thus verifying the accuracy of the calculation method used in this paper.

Abstract In this paper, the unsteady cavitating turbulent flow around a marine propeller behind the hull is simulated by the k-ω SST turbulence model coupled with the Zwart cavitation model. Three systematic refined structured meshes around the hull and propeller have been generated to study the predicted cavitation patterns and pressure fluctuations. Numerical results indicate that the predicted transient cavitating flow behind the hull wake, including sheet cavitation and tip vortex cavitation, shows quasi-periodic feature and agrees fairly well with the available experimental data. The deviations of pressure fluctuations between experimental data and numerical results are much small. With mesh refining, the cavitation region and the magnitudes of the calculated pressure fluctuations increase, while the differences between two adjacent sets of grids become smaller. In addition, the uncertainty of the thrust coefficient obtained by Factor of Safety method is significantly small. Further, the interaction between the cavitation and the vortex by the relative vorticity transport equation is illustrated. Results show that the magnitude of stretching term is obviously larger than the other three terms, and the dilatation term and the baroclinic term both have an important influence on the generation of vortices.

Purpose This paper aims to discuss inverse problems that arise in a variety of practical thermal processes and systems. It presents some of the approaches that may be used to obtain results that lie within a small region of uncertainty. Therefore, the non-uniqueness of the solution is reduced so that the final design and boundary conditions may be determined. Optimization methods that may be used to reduce the uncertainty and to select locations for experimental data and for minimizing the error are presented. A few examples of thermal systems are given to illustrate the applicability of these methods and the challenges that must be addressed in solving inverse problems. Design/methodology/approach In most analytical and numerical solutions, the basic equations that describe the process, as well as the relevant and appropriate boundary conditions, are known. The interest lies in obtaining a unique solution that satisfies the equations and boundary conditions. This may be termed as a direct or forward solution. However, there are many problems, particularly in practical systems, where the desired result is known but the conditions needed for achieving it are not known. These are generally known as inverse problems. In manufacturing, for instance, the temperature variation to which a component must be subjected to obtain desired characteristics is prescribed, but the means to achieve this variation are not known. An example of this circumstance is the annealing, tempering or hardening of steel. In such cases, the boundary and initial conditions are not known and must be determined by solving the inverse problem to obtain the desired temperature variation in the component. The solutions, thus, obtained are generally not unique. This is a review paper, which discusses inverse problems that arise in a variety of practical thermal processes and systems. It presents some of the approaches or strategies that may be used to obtain results that lie within a small region of uncertainty. It is important to realize that the solution is not unique, and this non-uniqueness must be reduced so that the final design and boundary conditions may be determined with acceptable accuracy and repeatability. Optimization techniques are often used for minimizing the error. This review presents several methods that may be applied to reduce the uncertainty and to select locations for experimental data for the best results. A few examples of thermal systems are given to illustrate the applicability of these methods and the challenges that must be addressed in solving inverse problems. By considering a variety of systems, the paper also shows the importance of solving inverse problems to obtain results that may be used to model and design thermal processes and systems. Findings The solution of inverse problems, which frequently arise in thermal processes, is discussed. Different strategies to obtain the conditions that lead to the desired result are given. The goal of these approaches is to reduce uncertainty and obtain essentially unique solutions for different circumstances. The error of the method can be checked against known conditions to see if it is acceptable for the given problem. Several examples are given to illustrate the use of these methods. Originality/value The basic strategies presented here for solving inverse problems that arise in thermal processes and systems, as well as the optimization techniques used to reduce the domain of uncertainty, are fairly original. They are used for certain challenging problems that have not been considered in detail earlier. Several methods are outlined for considering different types of problems.

Experiments were performed to determine the forces required to buckle a floating ice sheet pushing against structures of different widths. The characteristic length of each ice sheet was determined to enable a comparison to be made between the theoretical and experimental results.Most of the experimental data points are within the range of the theoretical values of normalized buckling loads for frictionless and hinged boundary conditions, which represent the extreme situations for ice-structure contact. Thus, the agreement between the theoretical and experimental buckling loads is considered to be good. Photographs of the buckled ice sheets show a resemblance to the theoretical mode of buckling.
