Aerodynamic Effects of an Unshrouded Low Pressure Turbine on a Low Aspect Ratio Exit Guide Vane

This paper presents the effects of an unshrouded low pressure turbine (LPT) onto the following exit guide vane row (EGV). The measurement results were obtained in the subsonic test turbine facility at Graz University of Technology by means of a fast response pressure probe in planes downstream of the rotor as well as oil flow visualisation. The test rig was designed in cooperation with MTU Aero Engines and represents the last 1.5 stages of a commercial aero engine. Considerable efforts were put into the adjustment of all relevant model parameters to reproduce the full scale LPT situation. Different tip clearances were evaluated by means of CFD obtained using a commercial Navier-Stokes code and validated with experimental results. The goal is to evaluate the effect of the varying leakage flow on the flow in the low aspect ratio EGV. Special attention is given to the impact on the development of secondary flows as well as the flow structures downstream of the EGV. The effect of the leakage flow causes a change of the flow structure of the EGV, particularly losses. Considering the largest investigated tip-clearance, the losses increased by 71% when compared to a zero-leakage case.

In this paper, three-dimensional multiblade row unsteady Navier–Stokes simulations at a hot streak temperature ratio of 2.0 have been performed to reveal the effects of rotor tip clearance on the inlet hot streak migration characteristics in high pressure stage of a vaneless counter-rotating turbine. The numerical results indicate that the migration characteristics of the hot streak in the high pressure turbine rotor are dominated by the combined effects of secondary flow, buoyancy, and leakage flow in the rotor tip clearance. The leakage flow trends to drive the hotter fluid toward the blade tip on the pressure surface and to the hub on the suction surface. Under the effect of the leakage flow, even partial hotter fluid near the pressure surface is also driven to the rotor suction surface through the tip clearance. Compared with the case without rotor tip clearance, the heat load of the high pressure turbine rotor is intensified due to the effects of the leakage flow. And the results indicate that the leakage flow effects trend to increase the low pressure turbine rotor inlet temperature at the tip region. The air flow with higher temperature at the tip region of the low pressure turbine rotor inlet will affect the flow and heat transfer characteristics in the downstream low pressure turbine.

In addition to geometrical modifications of the blade tip for reducing tip-leakage mass flow rate the method of passive tip-injection serves as an aerodynamic resistance towards the tip-leakage flow. The impact of this method has been investigated thoroughly at unshrouded blades in linear cascades. Furthermore combinations of shrouded blades with passive tip-injection have been investigated analytically as well as via numerical simulations for incompressible flow in linear cascades. The objective of this paper is to consider a real uncooled low pressure turbine stage with shrouded blades and to investigate the effect of passive tip-injection on various operational characteristics. CFD calculations have been carried out in a rotational frame taking into consideration compressible flow and serve for evaluating the method of passive tip-injection in the given turbine stage. Experimental data obtained from the machine without tip-injection serve as boundary conditions for the CFD calculations.

During the testing of development engines and components, intrusive instrumentation such as Kiel-head pitot probes and shrouded thermocouples are used to evaluate gas properties and performance. The size of these instruments can be significant relative to the blades, and their impact on aerodynamic efficiency must be considered when analyzing the test data. This paper reports on such parasitic losses for instruments mounted on the leading edge of a stator in a low-pressure turbine, with particular emphasis on understanding the impact of probe geometry on the induced loss. The instrumentation and turbine blades have been modeled in a low Mach number cascade facility with an upstream turbulence grid. The cascade was designed so that the leading edge probes were interchangeable in situ, allowing for rapid testing of differing probe geometries. Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) calculations were performed to complement the experiments and improve understanding of the flow behavior. A horseshoe vortex-like system forms at the join of the probe body and blade leading edge, generating pairs of streamwise vortices which convect over the blade pressure and suction surfaces. These vortices promote mixing between the freestream and boundary layer fluid and promote the transition of the boundary layer from laminar to turbulent flow. The size and shape of the leading edge probes relative to the blade vary significantly between applications. Tests with realistic probe geometries demonstrate that the detailed design of the shroud bleed system can impact the loss. A study of idealized cylinders is performed to isolate the impact of probe diameter, aspect ratio, and incidence. Beyond a probe aspect ratio of two, parasitic loss was found to scale approximately with probe frontal area.

In order to reduce the turbine flow, injecting an airstream into the mainstream of the low-pressure turbine from the casing. A CFD analysis has been carried out to study the impact of jet parameters (jet position, Angle, flow rate and velocity) to the turbine flow. The calculation results show that when the low-speed region caused by the jet flow locates at the throat the flow regulating effect is the most obvious. In additional, when the jet is against the main stream or with a big flow rate, the turbine flow regulation is better, but the loss efficiency of the turbine will be significantly increased. The jet Mach number has little influence on the effect of flow regulation.

This paper presents an experimental investigation of the vane-blade unsteady interaction in an unshrouded low pressure (LP) turbine research rig with uneven blade/vane count (72 blades and 96 vanes). The rig was designed in cooperation with MTU Aero Engines and considerable efforts were put on the adjustment of all relevant model parameters. In particular blade count ratio, airfoil aspect ratio, reduced mass flow, reduced speed, and Mach and Reynolds numbers were chosen to reproduce the full scale LP turbine at take off condition. Measurements by means of a fast-response pressure probe were performed adopting a phase-locked acquisition technique in order to provide the time resolved flow field downstream of the turbine rotor. The probe has been fully traversed both in circumferential and radial traverses. The rotor exit is characterized by strong perturbations due to the tip leakage vortex and the rotor blade wake. Circumferential nonuniformities due to the upstream vane wake and to the downstream exit guide vane potential effects are also identified. Furthermore, in the present configuration with an uneven blade/vane count the nonuniformities due to the stator and rotor row are misaligned along the whole turbine circumference and create a spinning mode that rotates in direction opposite to the rotor at a high frequency. The aeroacoustic theory is employed to explain such further unsteady pattern. The variations of the exit flow angle within a cycle of such pattern are not negligible and almost comparable to the ones within the blade passing period.

This paper presents an experimental study of the unsteady flow field downstream of a high pressure turbine with ejected purge flows, with a special focus on a flow field discussion using the mode detection approach according to the theory of Tyler and Sofrin. Measurements were carried out in a product-representative one and a half stage turbine test setup, which consists of a high-pressure turbine stage followed by an intermediate turbine center frame and a low-pressure turbine vane row. Four independent purge mass flows were injected through the forward and aft cavities of the unshrouded high-pressure turbine rotor. A fast-response pressure probe was used to acquire time-resolved data at the turbine center frame duct inlet and exit. The interactions between the stator, rotor, and turbine center frame duct are identified as spinning modes, propagating in azimuthal direction. Time-space diagrams illustrate the amplitude variation of the detected modes along the span. The composition of the unsteadiness and its major contributors are of interest to determine the role of unsteadiness in the turbine center frame duct loss generation mechanisms and to avoid high levels of blade vibrations in the low-pressure turbine which can in turn result in increased acoustic emissions. This work offers new insight into the unsteady flow behavior downstream of a purged high-pressure turbine and its propagation through an engine-representative turbine center frame duct configuration.

Abstract The design of modern aero engines enhances the interaction between components and facilitates the propagation of circumferential distortions of total pressure and temperature. As a consequence, the inlet conditions of a real turbine have significant spatial non-uniformities, which have direct consequences on both its aerodynamic and vibration characteristics. This work presents the results of an experimental study on the effects of different inlet total pressure distortion-stator clocking positions on the propagation of total pressure inflow disturbances through a low pressure turbine stage, with a particular focus on both the aerodynamic and aeroelastic performance. Measurements at a stable engine relevant operating condition and during transient operation were carried out in a one and a half stage subsonic turbine test facility at the Institute of Thermal Turbomachinery and Machine Dynamics at Graz University of Technology. A localised total pressure distortion was generated upstream of the stage in three different azimuthal positions relative to the stator vanes. The locations were chosen in order to align the distortion directly with a vane leading edge, suction side and pressure side. Additionally, a setup with clean inflow was used as reference. Steady and unsteady aerodynamic measurements were taken downstream of the investigated stage by means of a five-hole-probe (5HP) and a fast response aerodynamic pressure probe (FRAPP) respectively. Strain gauges applied on different blades were used in combination with a telemetry system to acquire the rotor vibration data. The aerodynamic interactions between the stator and rotor rows and the circumferential perturbation were studied through the identification of the main structures constituting the flow field. This showed that the steady and unsteady alterations created by the distortion in the flow field lead to modifications of the rotor vibration characteristics. Moreover, the importance of the impact that the pressure distortion azimuthal position has on the LPT stage aerodynamics and vibrations was highlighted.

This paper aims at evaluating the characteristics of the wakes periodically shed by the rotating bars of a spoked-wheel type wake generator installed upstream of a high-speed low Reynolds linear low-pressure turbine blade cascade. Due to the very high bar passing frequency obtained with the rotating wake generator (fbar = 2.4−5.6 kHz), a fast-response pressure probe equipped with a single 350 mbar absolute Kulite sensor has been used. In order to measure the inlet flow angle fluctuations, an angular aerodynamic calibration of the probe allowed the use of the virtual three-hole mode; additionally, yielding yaw corrected periodic total pressure, static pressure and Mach number fluctuations. The results are presented for four bar passing frequencies (fbar = 2.4/3.2/4.6/5.6 kHz), each tested at three isentropic inlet Mach numbers M1,is = 0.26/0.34/0.41 and for Reynolds numbers varying between Re1,is = 40,000 and 58,000, thus covering a wide range of engine representative flow coefficients (ϕ = 0.44−1.60). The measured wake characteristics show fairly good agreement with the theory of fixed cylinders in a cross-flow and the evaluated total pressure losses and flow angle variations generated by the rotating bars show fairly good agreement with theoretical results obtained from a control volume analysis.
