Effects of Vortex-Vortex Interaction in a Compressor Cascade With Vortex Generators

This paper presents a numerical investigation to explore the effects of vortex generators on a high speed compressor cascade. Secondary flow effects like the corner separation vortex have an influence on the performance of a compressor cascade such as leading to increased losses. In order to control the corner separation vortex and reduce losses, an extensive study of vortex generators applied to a compressor cascade is conducted. A preliminary study by steady 3D RANS simulations is performed using the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model. The aerodynamic performance as well as the behavior of the corner separation vortex is investigated in the compressor cascade without vortex generators. Then, a vortex generator is added to the cascade, which is numerically simulated. Various configurations are considered, which are decided by the height and installation angle of the vortex generator. Comparison of the performance attained by these configurations results in an optimum scheme that has minimum losses. Furthermore, unsteady 3D DES simulations are performed with the optimum configuration. This method that predicts the flow field more precisely could help verify the accuracy of the RANS results. Finally, by analyzing all the resulting aerodynamic performance and numerical flow phenomena, the mechanism of vortex-vortex interaction is presented and discussed, which could be a criterion to reduce the corner separation flow and enhance the performance of axial compressors.

The performance of a compressor cascade is considerably influenced by secondary flow effects, like the cross flow on the end wall as well as the corner separation between the wall and the vane. An extensive experimental study of vortex generator application in a highly loaded compressor cascade was performed in order to control these effects and enhance the aerodynamic performance. The results of the study will be used in future projects as a basis for parameterization in the design and optimization process for compressors in order to develop novel nonaxisymmetric endwalls as well as for blade modifications. The study includes the investigation of two vortex generator types with different geometrical forms and their application on several positions in the compressor cascade. The investigation includes a detailed description of the secondary flow effects in the compressor cascade, which is based on numerical and experimental results. This gives the basis for a specific approach of influencing the cascade flow by means of vortex generators. Depending on the vortex generator type and position, there is an impact on the end wall cross flow, the development of the horse shoe vortex at the leading edge of the vane, and the extent of the corner separation achieved by improved mixing within the boundary layer. The experiments were carried out on a compressor cascade at a high-speed test facility at DLR in Berlin at minimum loss (design point) and off-design of the cascade at Reynolds numbers up to Re = 0.6 × 106 (based on 40-mm chord) and Mach numbers up to M = 0.7. At the cascade design point, the total pressure losses could be reduced by up to 9% with the vortex generator configuration, whereas the static pressure rise was nearly unaffected. Furthermore, the cascade deflection could be influenced considerably by vortex generators and also an enhancement of the cascade stall range could be achieved. All these results will be presented and discussed with respect to secondary flow mechanisms. Finally, the general application of vortex generators in axial compressors will be discussed.

Furthermore, the cascade deflection could be influenced considerably by vortex generators and also an enhancement of the cascade stall range could be achieved. All these results will be presented and discussed with respect to secondary flow mechanisms.

Large-scale longitudinal vortices in high-speed turbulent separated flows caused by relatively small irregularities at the model leading edges or at the model surfaces are investigated in this paper. Oil-flow visualization and infrared thermography techniques were applied in the wind tunnel tests at Mach numbers 3 and 5 to investigate the nominally 2-D ramp flow at deflection angles of 20°, 25° and 30°. The surface contour anomalies have been artificially simulated by very thin strips (vortex generators) of different shapes and thicknesses attached to the model surface. It is shown that the introduced streamwise vortical disturbances survive over very large downstream distances of the order of 104 vortex-generator heights in turbulent supersonic flows without pressure gradients. It is demonstrated that each vortex pair induced in the reattachment region of the ramp is definitely a child of a vortex pair, which was generated originally, for instance, by the small roughness element near the leading edge. The dependence of the spacing and intensity of the observed longitudinal vortices on the introduced disturbances (thickness and spanwise size of vortex generators) and on the flow parameters (Reynolds numbers, boundary-layer thickness, compression corner angles, etc.) has been shown experimentally.

The present study aims at analysing the Boussinesq constitutive relation validity in a corner separation flow of a compressor cascade. The Boussinesq constitutive relation is commonly used in Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations for turbomachinery design. It assumes an alignment between the Reynolds stress tensor and the zero-trace mean strain-rate tensor. An indicator that measures the alignment between these tensors is used to test the validity of this assumption in a high fidelity large-eddy simulation. Eddy-viscosities are also computed using the LES database and compared. A large-eddy simulation (LES) of a LMFA-NACA65 compressor cascade, in which a corner separation is present, is considered as reference. With LES, both the Reynolds stress tensor and the mean strain-rate tensor are known, which allows the construction of the indicator and the eddy-viscosities. Two constitutive relations are evaluated. The first one is the Boussinesq constitutive relation, while the second one is the quadratic constitutive relation (QCR), expected to render more anisotropy, thus to present a better alignment between the tensors. The Boussinesq constitutive relation is rarely valid, but the QCR tends to improve the alignment. The improvement is mainly present at the inlet, upstream of the corner separation. At the outlet, the correction is milder. The eddy-viscosity built with the LES results are of the same order of magnitude as those built as the ratio of the turbulent kinetic energy k and the turbulence specific dissipation rate ω. They also show that the main impact of the QCR is to rotate the mean strain-rate tensor in order to realign it with the Reynolds stress tensor, without dilating it.

Abstract Three-dimensional corner separation significantly affects compressor performance, but turbulence models struggle to predict it accurately. This paper assesses the capability of the original shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model to predict the corner separation in a linear highly loaded prescribed velocity distribution (PVD) compressor cascade. Modifications for streamline curvature, Menter’s production limiter, and the Kato-Launder production term are examined. Comparisons with experimental data show that the original SST model and the SST model with different modifications can predict the corner flow well at an incidence angle of −7 deg, where the corner separation is small. However, all the models overpredict the extent of the flow separation when the corner separation is larger, at an incidence angle of 0 deg. The SST model is then modified using the helicity to take account of the energy backscatter, which previous studies have shown to be important in the corner separation regions of compressors. A Reynolds stress model (RSM) is also used for comparison. By comparing the numerical results with experiments and RSM results, it can be concluded that sensitizing the SST model to helicity can greatly improve the predictive accuracy for simulating the corner separation flow. The accuracy is quite competitive with the RSM, whereas in terms of computational cost and robustness it is superior to the RSM.

An important aspect of the aerodynamic flow field in the tip region of axial compressor rotors is the unsteady interaction between the tip clearance vortex and the incoming stator wakes. In order to gain an improved understanding of the mechanics involved, systematic studies need to be performed. As a first step towards the characterisation of the dynamic effects caused by the relative movement of the blade rows, the impact of a stationary wake-induced inlet disturbance on a linear compressor cascade with tip clearance will be analyzed. The wakes were generated by a fixed grid of cylindrical bars with variable pitch being placed at discrete pitchwise positions. Part II of this two-part paper focuses on the numerical studies conducted with the scientific flow solver TRACE. Selected measurements, which are discussed in detail in the first part of this paper, are compared with steady state RANS simulation data to determine the validity of the computational model. For this purpose, the flow field obtained in the passage (PIV), at the cascade exit (five-hole probes) and the endwall pressure distributions were used. The presented numerical results show potentials and limitations of the steady state CFD for the prediction of the investigated flow phenomena. The computations provide the initial conditions for future unsteady calculations, and enable a separate depiction of potential effects of steady and unsteady wake-tip clearance vortex interaction.

Secondary flows are noxious to axial compressor performance. To overcome and control those secondary flows, vortex generators are used as a passive control device. Controlling secondary flows will lead to a further improvements in the compressor performance. A new design of vortex generator is considered in this investigation in order to control secondary flows in axial compressor cascade at design and off-design conditions. Numerical simulations of a three-dimensional compressible turbulent flow have been performed to explore the effect of the vortex generators on the reduction of secondary flows. Six different incidence angles are used for the off-design operation investigations. Based on the simulation results, the pressure, velocity, and streamline are used to follow up the development of the secondary flows. Thence, total pressure loss coefficient, static pressure rise coefficient, difference in flow deflection angle, and diffusion factor are estimated. Results indicate that vortex generators have a significant effect on the development of secondary flows at off design operation as they cause a reduction in total pressure loss, they also affect the loading behavior of the cascade as they cause a slight change in the cascade deflection, and a slight decrease in the diffusion factor which causes unloading of the blade. Static pressure rise is significantly reduced at negative incidence angles while a slight reduction occurs at positive incidence angles. In a word, the new design of the vortex generator enhances the cascade aerodynamic performance and enlarges the operating range of the cascade towards the positive incidence region.

The performance of a compressor cascade is considerably influenced by flow control methods. In this paper, the synergistic effects of combination between micro-vortex generators (MVG) and boundary layer suction (BLS) are discussed in a high-load compressor cascade. Seven cases, which are grouped by a kind of micro-vortex generator and boundary layer suction with three locations, are investigated to control secondary flow effects and enhance the aerodynamic performance of the compressor cascade. The MVG is mounted on the end-wall in front of the passage. The rectangle suction slot with three radial positions is installed on the blade suction surface near the trailing edge. The numerical results show that: at the design condition, the total pressure loss is effectively decreased as well as the static pressure coefficient increase when the combined MVG and SBL method (COM) is used, which is superior to MVG in an aerodynamic performance. At the stall condition, the induced vortex coming from MVG could mix the low-energy fluid and mainstream, which result in the reduced separation, and the total pressure loss decreased by 11.54% when the suction flow ratio is 1.5%. The total pressure loss decreases by 14.59% when the COM control methods are applied.

This paper presents a numerical investigation of secondary flow control in a high speed compressor cascade for different incoming flow incidences by means of endwall vortex generator jets (VGJs). The inlet Reynolds number is 560,000 in corresponding to an inlet Mach number of 0.67. Based on the detail analysis of the flow field and cascade performance, two effect mechanisms of the vortex induced by the VGJ are proposed. The first is to enhance the mixing between the endwall boundary layer and the mainstream. The second is to block the cross flow as an air obstacle. Therefore, the low energy fluids accumulation in the corner region could be decreased significantly, weakening the separation on the suction side and reducing the losses effectively. This benefit becomes more obvious with the increase of the incidence from i = −2° to 4°. Additionally, a more uniform flow angle as well as static pressure profile along the blade height is obtained at the cascade outlet. The maximum loss reduction is up to 12.9% while i = 4° with a jet mass flow ratio of 0.2%. However, the unfavorable impact of the VGJs is also detected in the up-washed region, where the loss is increased by the mixing processes between the mainstream fluids and the low energy fluids. For the case i = −4°, a strengthened induced vortex is generated due to the increased angle between the jet and incoming flow, resulting in loss increase in the up-washed region. Besides, a more rapid corner boundary layer development appears in the rear part of the passage, contributing to severe separation and loss enhancement, which suggests that the VGJ should be switched off for this incidence. Therefore, the advice to the application of the VGJ according the incidence is further obtained.
