The Roots compressor has enjoyed a multitude of applications. Retuned to produce a high-temperature stream of gas, the Roots compressor can be a part of such applications as pyrolitic synthesis, chemical decomposition, optical fiber production and experimental studies. Presently, it appears that by using advanced materials, a prototype capable of withstanding temperatures up to 1500–2000 K could be built. A series of experiments was performed and various performance data were recorded at 2280 and 3430 rpm. The maximum steady state temperature achieved and the corresponding pressure ratio were 660 K and 3.9. Numerical modeling revealed a good correlation for pressure ratios up to 3. While the outlet pressure signature was accurately reproduced, the magnitude of the actual pressure fluctuation was somewhat in error. A more detailed physical model of gas dynamic processes could improve the agreement. The calculations were based on measurements of the internal leakage, need for modeling of which is emphasized.

Purpose: The article implies theoretical and experimental studies of the liquid pollution accumulations impact on the efficiency of gathering gas pipelines operation at the Yuliivskyi oil and gas condensate production facility (OGCPF). Research of efficiency of gas pipelines cleaning by various methods. Design/methodology/approach: The research methodology consists of determining the hydraulic efficiency of gathering gas pipelines before and after cleaning of their internal cavity by different methods and comparing the obtained results, which allows to objectively evaluate the efficiency of any cleaning method. CFD simulation of gas-dynamic processes in low sections of gas pipelines with liquid contaminants. Findings: Experimental studies of cleaning efficiency in the inner cavity of the gas gathering pipelines of the Yuliivskyi OGCPF by various methods, including: supply of surfactant solution, creating a high-speed gas flow, use of foam pistons were performed. It was established that cleaning the inner cavity of gas gathering pipelines by supplying a surfactant solution leads to an increase in the coefficient of hydraulic efficiency by 2%-4.5%, creating a high-speed gas flow by 4%-7%, and under certain conditions by 8%-10 % and more. However, for two gas pipelines the use of foam pistons allowed to increase the coefficient of hydraulic efficiency from 5.7 % to 10.5 % with a multiplicity of foam from 50 to 90. be recommended for other deposits. The results of CFD simulation showed that the accumulation of liquid contaminants in the lowered sections of gas pipelines affects gas-dynamic processes and leads to pressure losses above the values provided by the technological regime. With the increase in liquid contaminants volume the pressure losses occur. Moreover, with a small amount of contamination (up to 0.006 m3), liquid contaminants do not have a significant effect on pressure loss. If the contaminants volume in the lowered section of the pipeline is greater than the specified value, the pressure loss increases by parabolic dependence. The increase in mass flow leads to an increase in the value of pressure loss at the site of liquid contamination. Moreover, the greater the mass flow, the greater the impact of its changes on the pressure loss. The CFD simulation performed made it possible not only to determine the patterns of pressure loss in places of liquid contaminants accumulation in the inner cavity of gas pipelines, but also to understand the gas-dynamic processes in such places, which is an unconditional advantage of this method over experimental. Research limitations/implications: The obtained simulation results showed that the increase in the volume of liquid contaminants in the inner cavity of gas gathering pipelines leads to an increase in pressure losses above the value provided by the technological regime. To achieve maximum cleaning of gas gathering pipelines, it is necessary to develop a new method that will combine the considered. Practical implications: The performed experimental results make it possible to take a more thorough approach to cleaning the inner cavity of gas gathering pipelines and to forecast in advance to what extent the hydraulic efficiency of gas gathering pipelines can be increased. Originality/value: The obtained results of CFD simulation of gas-dynamic processes in lowered sections of gas pipelines with liquid contaminants, experimental studies of the effectiveness of various methods of cleaning the inner cavity of gas gathering pipelines has original value.

Abstract This paper presents experimental investigations of aerodynamic and acoustic characteristics for the C179-2 bypass fan model with different versions of a slot-type casing treatment (CT). This work aims at optimization the CT configuration for a simultaneously improvement of aerodynamic parameters (efficiency and stall margin), as well as the use of this CT as a reactive type silencer to reduce fan noise. All versions of the slot-type CTs under study are designed on the basis of a semi-empirical procedure developed by CIAM. Three versions of a slot-type CT are designed and tested as applied to the C179-2 fan model. Based on the analysis of experimental data found by aerodynamic tests to study the effect of the number of CT rows, the geometry of CT slots, their relative positions and the height of its annular cavity on key aerodynamic characteristics of the C179-2 fan model, it is found that: - all CTs under study considerably increase stall margins (by 8%–16%) of the fan in moderate and high modes determined by n-corrected rotational speed (n = 75–100 %). The stall margin at n = 54 % increases by approx. 30 %. - relative position of slots in the three CTs with identical number of slots in both rows has a noticeable effect on the CT gas-dynamic efficiency. A half-step shift of axes of the slots relative to each other leads to a slight increase (by max. 1.6%) in stall margins in moderate and high modes and a considerable increase in efficiency (by avg. 2 %) in the same modes, except for n = 100 %. The beneficial effect of the CT on an increase in stall margins ASM and efficiency (along the operating line) is found for the C179-2 single-row bypass fan model stage with total pressure ratio 1.56 in the bypass duct and corrected tip speed 404 m/s. A series of experimental studies of acoustic characteristics of the C179-2 fan model stage with three versions of the slot-type casing treatment is completed in conditions of the C-3A acoustic test facility with an anechoic chamber. The acoustic tests of the fan model are carried out within n = 40–100 % corrected rotational speeds (as compared with the nominal speed). The specified speed range covers takeoff (n = 90.7 %), climb (n = 85.2 %), cruise (n = 100 %), and approach (n = 58.2 %) modes. For all fan operating modes, narrow-band noise spectra and radiation patterns are compared for the C179-2 model configurations with a smooth flow passage and with the CT. In addition to a substantial improvement in gas-dynamic characteristics, the use of the slot-type CT for the C179-2 bypass fan model stage results in a considerable improvement in its acoustic characteristics. In total, the sound power of the C179-2 single-row by-pass fan model decreases by 3 dB for three certification modes.

Findings of the growth relationships between baddeleyite and zircon are rare, due to significant differences in the formation conditions of the minerals. A reaction replacement (partial to complete) of baddeleyite by zircon is possible during metamorphism accompanied by the interaction with high-Si fluids. The opposite situation, when zircon is replaced by baddeleyite, is extremely rare in the nature. Transformation of zircon from polymineral (compound) ore occurrence Ichetju (the Middle Timan) with the formation of microaggregates of baddeleyite, ratile and florencite has been found out. The size of the largest segregations of baddeleyite does not exceed 10 microns in diameter. Microaggregates are unevenly related to the rim of zircon with a thickness of 10 to 50 rfn, voids and cracks across the grain. Altered zircon rim (a mixture of newly formed minerals) is characterized by sharply increased composition of REE (especially LREE), Y, Nb, Ca, Ti. The composition of Th and U also increases. An overview of the experimental studies on the reaction between zircon and baddeleyite and single natural analogues allows to make a conclusion that the most likely mechanism of the transformation of zircon from ore occurrence Ichetju to baddeleyite (intergrowth with ratile and florencite) is due to the effect of interaction of primary zircon with high-temperature (higher than 500—600°C) alkaline fluids transporting HFSE (REE, Y, Nb, Ti). This is indirectly confirmed by the findings of zircon with anomalous high composition of Y and REE up to 100000 and 70000 ppm respectively.

The problem of increasing the reliability of wind turbines exists in the development of new offshore oil and natural gas fields. Reducing emergency situations is necessary due to the autonomous operation of drilling rigs and bulk seaports in the subarctic and Arctic climate. The relevance of the topic is linked with the development of a methodology for theoretical and practical studies of gas dynamics when gas flows in a pipe, based on a mathematical model using new mathematical methods for calculation of excess speeds in case of wind gusts. Problems in the operation of offshore wind turbines arise with storm gusts of wind, which is comparable to the wave movement of the gas flow. Thus, the scientific problem of increasing the reliability of wind turbines in conditions of strong wind gusts is solved. The authors indicate a gross error in the calculations when approximating through the use of the Fourier series. The obtained results will allow us to solve one of the essential problems of modeling at this stage of its development, namely: to reduce the calculation time and the adequacy of the model built for similar installations and devices. Experimental studies of gas-dynamic flows are carried out on the example of a physical model of a wind turbine. In addition, a computer simulation of the gas-dynamic flow process was carried out. The use of new approximation schemes in processing the results of experiments and computer simulation can reduce the calculation error by 1.2 percent.

AbstractThe characteristic property of a liquid, discriminating it from a solid, is its fluidity, which can be expressed by a velocity field. The reaction of the velocity field on forces is enshrined in the transport parameter viscosity. In contrast, a solid reacts to forces elastically through a displacement field, the particles are trapped in their potential minimum. The flow in a liquid needs enough thermal energy to overcome the changing potential barriers, which is supported through a continuous rearrangement of surrounding particles. Cooling a liquid will decrease the fluidity of a particle and the mobility of the neighbouring particles, resulting in an increase of the viscosity until the system comes to an arrest. This process with a concomitant slowing down of collective particle rearrangements might already start deep inside the liquid state. The idea of the potential energy landscape provides an attractive picture for these dramatic changes. However, despite the appealing idea there is a scarcity of quantitative assessments, in particular, when it comes to experimental studies. Here we present results on a monatomic liquid metal through a combination of ab initio molecular dynamics, neutron spectroscopy and inelastic x-ray scattering. We investigated the collective dynamics of liquid aluminium to reveal the changes in dynamics when the high temperature liquid is cooled towards solidification. The results demonstrate the main signatures of the energy landscape picture, a reduction in the internal atomic structural energy, a transition to a stretched relaxation process and a deviation from the high-temperature Arrhenius behavior of the relaxation time. All changes occur in the same temperature range at about $$1.4 \cdot T_{melting}$$ 1.4 · T melting , which can be regarded as the temperature when the liquid aluminium enters the landscape influenced phase and enters a more viscous liquid state towards solidification. The similarity in dynamics with other monatomic liquid metals suggests a universal dynamic crossover above the melting point.

The object of the inquiry detailed in the present paper is to determine at what degree of concentration the affinity of sulphuric acid for aqueous vapour is equal to that of anhydrous space for the same vapour at given temperatures. It has long been known that concentrated sulphuric acid abstracts moisture from the atmosphere, but the amount and the rate of this absorption have never been ascertained with accuracy; and consequently, in applying this acid to purposes of exsiccation, the experimenter has often been at a loss to know whether the acid was sufficiently strong to render the space in which it was confined perfectly anhydrous. By placing portions of the acid, previously weighed, and diluted with known quantities of water, under the receiver of an air-pump, with equal portions of concentrated acid, of the specific gravity 1·8428, in similar dishes, the author ascertained that the dilute acid could be concentrated to the specific gravity 1·814, at a temperature varying from 65° to 57°: whence he concludes that acid of such strength is capable of drying a vacuum when the temperature does not exceed 57°. By making similar experiments in air, the author compared together the weights lost by ten grains of dilute sulphuric acid of the specific gravity 1·135, at three different periods of the day for six days, taking note of the dew-point and the temperature; and infers that when the affinity of space for vapour, or the evaporating force, is equal to 0·15 of an inch of mercury, it is just able to balance the affinity for water of sulphuric acid of the specific gravity 1·249. The author next instituted a series of experiments to ascertain whether the evaporation of water from dilute sulphuric acid is capable of being carried on to the same extent in air as in vacuo, and found that the evaporating force of air exerted upon such acid is less than that of a vacuum at the same temperature. He observes that his experiments offer conclusive evidence that the evaporation of water is not owing to the existence of a chemical affinity between the vapour of the liquid and atmospheric air; but thinks that they favour the notion that the obstruction to this process in the open atmosphere is rather owing to the pressure than to the inertiæ of the particles of air. He is also of opinion that improvements will hereafter arise from this inquiry with regard to the economical management of the process of manufacturing sulphuric acid, which process would be greatly expedited by the regulated admission of steam into the condensing chambers kept at a constant high temperature.
