Abstract Externalities of the road transportation are multidimensional in nature and involve the road-vehicle interaction under different environmental conditions. Estimating the pavement and vehicle damage potentials as a function of the conditions under which such interaction takes place, is important to avoid accelerated or catastrophic damages in these systems. Such an assessing is crucial from the perspective of pricing the effects of the vehicle on the infrastructure and vice versa. The existing models for pricing such interaction, critically depends on gross average statistical models. In this paper, it is proposed a deterministic approach to realize such an assessment, based upon validated approaches for the pavement damage. The simulation scheme considers different degrees-of-freedom vehicle models, and a discrete asphalt pavement, that make possible the simulation of massive traffic situations on realistic road lengths.

Job satisfaction is an important factor for employees working in formal and informal sector. The job is small or big, permanent or temporary, risky or non-risky, job satisfaction is important. It is the mental feeling which drives the employees to excel. Job satisfaction is a combination of psychological, physiological and environmental circumstances. A satisfied employee is a contented and happy human being. The labour turnover depends upon job satisfaction. Even highly paid employees quit the job when they are not satisfied with the job. Road transportation in Tamilnadu is growing day by day. Job stress in the road transportation is very high due to increase in number of vehicle playing on the road and heavy traffic. The drivers and conductors working in public transport corporation are suffering from high job stress. If drivers and conductors are not satisfied with their job which leads to mental stresses and affects the productivity and also creates accidents. In this present study the researchers made an attempt to study the level of job satisfaction among the drivers and conductors who are working in the Tamilnadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC). The study reveals the expectations of drivers and conductors working in TNSTC with regards to the attributes like salary, promotion and fringe benefits etc., are satisfactory and not detrimental.

The development of road network infrastructure is an important component of the economic development of the European Union. Updating of the road network contributes to the integration of the economies of countries into a coherent whole. The road network provides the free movement of citizens, the movement of goods and the effective implementation of various services. The increase in the length of the road network leads to an increase in the financial and material costs necessary to ensure its maintenance and repair. One of the ways to reduce costs is by strengthening the physic-mechanical and operational characteristics of the pavement due to the widespread use of cement concrete. The quality of the pavement of cement concrete depends largely on the rational selection of its composition. This allows a significant increase in the durability of road pavement. The purpose of the research was: the development of recommendations for the rational selection of the composition of the road pavement material of cement concrete, aimed at upgrading longevity, and taking into account its frost resistance grade. According to the goal, the following tasks were developed: the analyses of the climatic zones in which the road network of the European Union is located; the development of a research plan, a selection of the response function and influence factors; the study of physico-mechanical and operational characteristics of the researched material of road pavement; on the basis of the obtained data, the calculation of the complex of experimental-statistical models, which describe the physico-mechanical and operational characteristics of the road pavement material; on the basis of experimental statistical models, a method was proposed for selecting the rational compositions of the cement concrete pavement road material depending on the conditions of its application. The results presented in the article can be used in engineering and scientific practice for the selection of road pavement from cement concrete for highways.

The methods of controlling Highway semi-rigid base asphalt pavement cracks and other diseases are always hot fields of road engineering and academic circles. The existing methods are on some degree efficient on delaying the formation and extension of cracks, but the effect is limited with different methods and various mechanisms of preventing cracks. Base on force analysis of pavement, this article presents a new technology of crack controlling which uses intelligent composite materials interlayer. By adding a stress absorbing layer between the asphalt surface layers or the semi-rigid base layers with low modulus, good toughness, self-adaptability and self-control ability, the intelligent composite materials interlayer has a good effect on controlling cracks which has been proved by the theoretical calculations and experimental analysis. As a result, the intelligent composite materials interlayer could efficiently prevent and delay the formation and extension of cracks, the safety and comfort of highway could be improved significantly while the cost of construction and maintenance decreasing. And the service level and social image of the road could also be improved effectively. This research has important academic and application value.

This study uses a test section of a highway, a study object, to explore the effect of thickness of the gravel base and asphalt layer on the vertical deformation of the road surface. The thickness of the asphalt layer and graded gravel base is changed. The nonlinear description equation of the relationship between the thickness (h1) of the asphalt layer and the vertical deformation (d1) is established: d1=a41−b4h1. The thickness of the asphalt pavement is then determined to reduce vertical deformation. Numerical calculation shows that the maximum vertical deformation of the foundation is within 8 mm, which is less than the 15 mm maximum vertical deformation of the embankment. This level meets the design requirements.

This study aims to identify the potential adverse driving conditions which result from driver behavior, road surfaces and weather conditions for vehicles during a cruise, and to inform the drivers of the other vehicles moving on the same route. Adverse driving condition scenarios were developed via acceleration data in lateral, longitudinal and vertical directions gathered by using an accelerometer sensor placed at the gravity center of the test vehicles. The drivers were warned through the symbols designed according to the developed scenarios in different shapes and colors, displayed on an information screen showing the position of the vehicle. Three different software programs were used for gathering and evaluating the accelerometer data, storing scenario-specific symbols on the internet and transferring these symbols to the other vehicle information displays. The road tests were performed in conditions present in Turkey. It was observed that the vehicle drivers were alerted with the warning symbols which were designed for dangerous road and driving conditions with a latency of approximately 6s on Google maps which appeared on the driver information screen.

Under normal atmospheric pressure conditions, volume suddenly increases about 11% when the water freezes and decreased when the ice melts. The pressure can reach up to 2500 times of atmospheric pressure in the closed space when the water freezing. This is a very important characteristic of the natural world and the industrial. In low temperature condition, the snow on the pavement is easy to melt and freeze, and it will affect the road safety, increase the cracking of the road and accelerate asphalt pavement water damage. Bitumen is a mixture consisting of some extremely complex polymer hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon derivatives of non-metallic (oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen). Deicing salt is used to prevent freezing in that area, chloride salt is its main ingredient. When the water melting point reduced, it is not easy to icing but to penetrate the asphalt pavement. If the temperature is continued to reduce, salt solution will still freezing. At last, the pavement will form water damage in repeated freeze-thaw cycles conditions.
