Perceived Value Change via 3D Printed Bistable Structures

Abstract A key aspect of color change is altering perceived value or intensity. This paper presents a methodology to achieve value change through mechanical means via the deflection of bistable structures. We create mechanical pixel-based, reversible color change using 3D printed switchable bistability. Switchable bistability arises from the combination of pre-strain and shape memory, enabling us to access multiple elastically programmed shapes at elevated temperatures with fast morphing and low actuation forces, while retaining high stiffness at room temperature. Building on our previous study that achieved bistability through FDM printing with directional pre-stress, finite element analysis is conducted to design a pixel-like structure that acts as a unit cell with color change capabilities. Quantitative and qualitative analysis is conducted through image processing techniques in order to prove the viability of this approach to creating value change through geometric deformation of bistable structures. By leveraging this technique, there are numerous potential applications in fields including robotics, architecture, and interior design.

High-temperature-resistant polymeric adhesives with high servicing temperatures and high adhesion strengths are highly desired in aerospace, aviation, microelectronic and other high-tech areas. The currently used high-temperature resistant polymeric adhesives, such as polyamic acid (PAA), are usually made from the high contents of solvents in the composition, which might cause adhesion failure due to the undesirable voids caused by the evaporation of the solvents. In the current work, electrospun preimidized polyimide (PI) nano-fibrous membranes (NFMs) were proposed to be used as solvent-free or solvent-less adhesives for stainless steel adhesion. In order to enhance the adhesion reliability of the PI NFMs, thermally crosslinkable phenylethynyl end-cappers were incorporated into the PIs derived from 3,3’,4,4’-oxydiphthalic anhydride (ODPA) and 3,3-bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl]phthalide (BAPPT). The derived phenylethynyl-terminated PETI-10K and PETI-20K with the controlled molecular weights of 10,000 g mol−1 and 20,000 g mol−1, respectively, showed good solubility in polar aprotic solvents, such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP) and N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc). The PI NFMs were successfully fabricated by electrospinning with the PETI/DMAc solutions. The ultrafine PETI NFMs showed the average fiber diameters (dav) of 627 nm for PETI-10K 695 nm for PETI-20K, respectively. The PETI NFMs showed good thermal resistance, which is reflected in the glass transition temperatures (Tgs) above 270 °C. The PETI NFMs exhibited excellent thermoplasticity at elevated temperatures. The stainless steel adherends were successfully adhered using the PETI NFMs as the adhesives. The PI NFMs provided good adhesion to the stainless steels with the single lap shear strengths (LSS) higher than 20.0 MPa either at room temperature (25 °C) or at an elevated temperature (200 °C).

Numerous engineering applications require lightweight structures with excellent absorption capacity. The problem of obtaining such structures may be solved by nature and especially biological structures with such properties. The paper concerns an attempt to develop a new energy-absorbing material using a biomimetic approach. The lightweight structure investigated here is mimicking geometry of diatom shells, which are known to be optimized by nature in terms of the resistance to mechanical loading. The structures mimicking frustule of diatoms, retaining the similarity with the natural shell, were 3D printed and subjected to compression tests. As required, the bio-inspired structure deformed continuously with the increase in deformation force. Finite element analysis (FEA) was carried out to gain insight into the mechanism of damage of the samples mimicking diatoms shells. The experimental results showed a good agreement with the numerical results. The results are discussed in the context of further investigations which need to be conducted as well as possible applications in the energy absorbing structures.

AbstractThis study evaluates the suitability of 3D printed biodegradable mats to load and deliver the topical antibiotic, neomycin, for up to 3 weeks in vitro. A 3D printer equipped with a hot melt extruder was used to print bandage-like wound coverings with porous sizes appropriate for cellular attachment and viability. The semicrystalline polyester, poly-l-lactic acid (PLLA) was used as the base polymer, coated (post-printing) with polyethylene glycols (PEGs) of MWs 400 Da, 6 kDa, or 20 kDa to enable manipulation of physicochemical and biological properties to suit intended applications. The mats were further loaded with a topical antibiotic (neomycin sulfate), and cumulative drug-release monitored for 3 weeks in vitro. Microscopic imaging as well as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) studies showed pore dimensions of 100 × 400 µm. These pore dimensions were achieved without compromising mechanical strength; because of the “tough” individual fibers constituting the mat (Young’s Moduli of 50 ± 20 MPa and Elastic Elongation of 10 ± 5%). The in vitro dissolution study showed first-order release kinetics for neomycin during the first 20 h, followed by diffusion-controlled (Fickian) release for the remaining duration of the study. The release of neomycin suggested that the ability to load neomycin on to PLLA mats increases threefold, as the MW of the applied PEG coating is lowered from 20 kDa to 400 Da. Overall, this study demonstrates a successful approach to using a 3D printer to prepare porous degradable mats for antibiotic delivery with potential applications to dermal regeneration and tissue engineering.

In this research, conjugated thermal and fluid dynamics simulations are presented on a modern hollow clay slab blocks filled pre-stressed reinforced concrete beam slab construction. The simulation parameters were set from Eurocode standards and calibrated using data from standardized fire tests of the same slab construction. We evaluated the temperature distributions of the slabs under transient conditions against standard fire load. Knowing the temperature distribution against time at certain points of the structure, the loss of load bearing capacity of the structure is definable at elevated temperatures. The results demonstrated that we could pre-establish the thermal behavior of complex composite structures exposed to fire using thermal and CFD simulation tools. Our results and method of fire resistance tests can contribute to fire safety planning of buildings.

In the railroad industry, distressed bearings in service are primarily identified using wayside hot-box detectors (HBDs). Current technology has expanded the role of these detectors to monitor bearings that appear to “warm trend” relative to the average temperatures of the remainder of bearings on the train. Several bearings set-out for trending and classified as nonverified, meaning no discernible damage, revealed that a common feature was discoloration of rollers within a cone (inner race) assembly. Subsequent laboratory experiments were performed to determine a minimum temperature and environment necessary to reproduce these discolorations and concluded that the discoloration is most likely due to roller temperatures greater than 232 °C (450 °F) for periods of at least 4 h. The latter finding sparked several discussions and speculations in the railroad industry as to whether it is possible to have rollers reaching such elevated temperatures without heating the bearing cup (outer race) to a temperature significant enough to trigger the HBDs. With this motivation, and based on previous experimental and analytical work, a thermal finite element analysis (FEA) of a railroad bearing pressed onto an axle was conducted using ALGOR 20.3™. The finite element (FE) model was used to simulate different heating scenarios with the purpose of obtaining the temperatures of internal components of the bearing assembly, as well as the heat generation rates and the bearing cup surface temperature. The results showed that, even though some rollers can reach unsafe operating temperatures, the bearing cup surface temperature does not exhibit levels that would trigger HBD alarms.

In order to better understand and predict the intragrain heterogeneous deformation in a 6063 aluminum alloy deformed at an elevated temperature, when additional slip systems beyond the usual octahedral slip systems are active, a modeling framework for analyzing representative polycrystals under these conditions is presented. A model polycrystal that has a similar microstructure to that observed in the material under consideration is modeled with a finite element analysis. A large number of elements per grain (more than 1000) are used to capture well the intragranular heterogeneous response. The polycrystal model is analyzed with three different sets of initial orientations. A compression test is used to calibrate the material model, and a macroscale simulation of the compression test is used to define the deformation history applied to the model polycrystal. In order to reduce boundary condition effects, periodic boundary conditions are applied to the model polycrystal. To investigate the effect of additional slip systems expected to be active at elevated temperatures, the results considering only the 12 {111}⟨110⟩ slip systems are compared to the results with the additional 12 {110}⟨110⟩ and {001}⟨110⟩ slip systems available (i.e., 24 available slip systems). The resulting predicted grain structure and texture are compared to the experimentally observed grain structure and texture in the 6063 aluminum alloy compression sample as well as to the available data in the literature, and the intragranular misorientations are studied.

Creep failure is one of the most important failure modes in the design of hydroprocessing reactors at elevated temperatures, and the accurate prediction of the creep behavior in structural discontinuities is a critical issue for component design. A physically-based continnum damage mechanics (CDM) model was adopted to describe all three creep stages of 2.25Cr-1Mo-0.25V ferritic steel widely used in manufacturing modern hydroprocessing reactors. The material constants in the damage constitutive equations were identified using an efficient optimization scheme based on genetic algorithm (GA). The user-defined subroutine implementing the CDM model was developed using user programmable features (UPFs) in ANSYS. Three-dimensional finite element analysis of the hydroprocessing reactor was conducted to determine the critical regions, and the studies on the stress redistribution and the prediction of damage evolution in these regions during creep were carried out. The results show that FE modelling based on CDM theory can provide a good tool for creep design of complex engineering components.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly referred to as drones, are one of the most dynamic and multidimensional emerging technologies of the modern era. This technology has recently found multiple potential applications within the transportation field, ranging from traffic surveillance applications to traffic network analysis. To conduct a UAV-based traffic study, extremely diligent planning and execution are required followed by an optimal data analysis and interpretation procedure. In this study, however, the main focus was on the processing and analysis of UAV-acquired traffic footage. A detailed methodological framework for automated UAV video processing is proposed to extract the trajectories of multiple vehicles at a particular road segment. Such trajectories can be used either to extract various traffic parameters or to analyze traffic safety situations. The proposed framework, which provides comprehensive guidelines for an efficient processing and analysis of a UAV-based traffic study, comprises five components: preprocessing, stabilization, georegistration, vehicle detection and tracking, and trajectory management. Until recently, most traffic-focused UAV studies have employed either manual or semiautomatic processing techniques. In contrast, this paper presents an in-depth description of the proposed automated framework followed by a description of a field experiment conducted in the city of Sint-Truiden, Belgium. Future research will mainly focus on the extension of the applications of the proposed framework in the context of UAV-based traffic monitoring and analysis.

Eight chromophoric indicators are incorporated into Sylgard 184 to develop sensors that are fabricated either by traditional methods such as casting or by more advanced manufacturing techniques such as 3D printing. The sensors exhibit specific color changes when exposed to acidic species, basic species, or elevated temperatures. Additionally, material properties are investigated to assess the chemical structure, Shore A Hardness, and thermal stability. Comparisons between the casted and 3D printed sensors show that the sensing devices fabricated with the advanced manufacturing technique are more efficient because the color changes are more easily detected.
