Theoretical Analysis of Piston Ring Frictional Loss in an Innovative Rotating Liner Internal Combustion Engine

This paper presents a new lubrication model to predict piston ring friction. The average Reynolds equation is adopted to obtain the hydrodynamic component of restoring force against the cylinder liner surface. The dry or boundary lubricated component is derived from Greenwood-Tripp model. The influence of surface irregularities or roughness on the lubricant flow will be described by statistical parameters. Unlike classical piston ring mixed lubrication models, a sideslip rolling friction model is incorporated with contact simulation. Numerical results show that piston ring friction is reduced dramatically by the liner rotation.

In order to investigate the friction and wear behavior between the nodular cast iron cylinder liner (Fe) and CuSn coated piston ring under heavy-duty conditions, piston rings with chromium(Cr) coating and CuSn-Cr coating were tested using the piston ring reciprocating liner test rig at the simulated working conditions of 56 MPa, 200 r/min, 190 °C. Compared with the Cr/Fe pair, the CuSn coating consumption of the CuSn-Cr/Fe pair made friction coefficient and cylinder wear loss decrease by 2.8% and 51.5%, respectively. Different size Sn patches worn from the CuSn coated piston ring were embedded into the cylinder liner surface based on the surface topography. This process was shown to reduce the surface roughness of a cylinder liner and form flatter plateau structures. Chemical elements analysis indicated that plateau structures on the cylinder liner surface matched with CuSn-Cr coated ring are helpful to promote the tribo-chemical reaction and generate the reactive products to protect the mutually contacted asperities.

Purpose In an internal combustion engine, piston ring-cylinder liner tribo pair is one among the most critical rubbing pairs. Most of the energy produced by an internal combustion engine is dissipated as frictional losses of which major portion is contributed by the piston ring-cylinder liner tribo pair. Hence, proper design of tribological parameters of piston ring-cylinder liner pair is essential and can effectively reduce the friction and wear, thereby improving the tribological performance of the engine. This paper aims to use surface texturing, an effective and feasible method, to improve the tribological performance of piston ring-cylinder liner tribo pair. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, influence of positive texturing (protruding) on friction reduction and wear resistance of piston ring surfaces was studied. The square-shaped positive textures were fabricated on piston ring surface by chemical etching method, and the experiments were conducted with textured piston ring surfaces against un-textured cylinder liner surface on pin-on-disc apparatus by continuous supply of lubricant at the inlet of contact zone. The parameters varied in this study are area density and normal load at a constant sliding speed. A comparison was made between the tribological properties of textured and un-textured piston ring surfaces. Findings From the experimental results, the tribological performance of the textured piston ring-cylinder liner tribo pair was significantly improved over a un-textured tribo pair. A maximum friction reduction of 67.6 per cent and wear resistance of 81.6 per cent were observed with textured ring surfaces as compared to un-textured ring surfaces. Originality/value This experimental study is helpful for better understanding of the potency of positive texturing on friction reduction and wear resistance of piston ring-cylinder liner tribo pair under lubricated sliding conditions.

Demands for decreased environmental impact from vehicles are resulting in a strong push for decreased engine oil, fuel consumption and weight. New machining and coating technologies have offered ways to attack these problems. Engine oil and fuel consumption are to a great extent controlled by the topography of the cylinder liner surface and it is therefore important to optimise this surface. Recent engine tests have shown a reduction in oil consumption when using cylinder liners with a smoother finish than that given by the current plateau honing. However, engine manufacturers are hesitant to introduce smoother liner surfaces because of fears of severe wear and scuffing. There is also the possibility that smoother liner surfaces may be more sensitive to the choice of piston ring finishes. This paper therefore seeks to investigate the functional performance and resistance to wear of these smooth cylinder liners and the mating top ring surfaces.

Abstract This paper presents a mathematical model of piston-rings-cylinder sealing (TPC) of a combustion engine. The developed model is an itegrated model of gas flow through gaps in TPC unit, displacements and twisting motions of piston rings in ring grooves as well as generation of oil film between ring face surfaces and cylinder liner. Thermal deformations and wear of TPC unit elements as well as heat exchange between flowing gas and surrounding walls, were taken into account in the model. The paper contains descriptions of: assumptions used for developing the model, the model itself, its numerical solution as well as its computer application for carrying out simulation tests.

In the paper a model of a piston ring pack motion on an oil film has been analysed. The local oil film thickness can be compared to height of the combined roughness of mating surfaces of piston rings and cylinder liner. Equations describing the mixed lubrication problem based on the empirical mathematical model formulated in works of Patir, Cheng [6, 7] and Greenwood, Tripp [3] have been combined [12] and used in this paper. A model of a gas flow through the labyrinth seal of piston rings has been developed [13, 15]. In addition models of ring twist effects and axial ring motion in piston grooves have been applied [14, 15]. In contrast to the previous papers of the author, an experimental verification of the main parts of developed mathematical model and software has been presented. A relatively good compatibility between the experimental measurements and calculated results has been achieved. In addition this study presents the simulation results for an automobile internal combustion engine

Purpose – The piston ring-cylinder liner pair is one of the most important tribological systems of an internal combustion engine. The friction loss of the piston ring-cylinder liner pair accounts for the largest portion of total efficiency losses. Therefore, improving the tribological system design of the piston ring-cylinder liner pair can reduce friction losses and bring tremendous economic benefits to society. This paper aims use surface texturing, which is proving to be an effective method, for improving the tribological performance of sliding surfaces. Design/methodology/approach – In this paper, an experimental study using a pin-on-disk tribometer was carried out to evaluate the effects of surface texturing on friction reduction of piston rings under various loads and sliding velocities. Rectangular- and circular-shaped textures with different depths and area densities were produced by a Femtosecond laser. Comparison experiments were conducted with un-textured rings. Findings – The results indicate that the friction performance of the ring surface was significantly improved by surface texturing, and the running-in stage was also shortened. More specifically, it was found that the rectangular-shaped texture had a better effect on friction reduction than the circular-shaped texture. Results also indicate that an optimum texture density existed for the rectangular-shaped texture. Additionally, it was observed that the average friction coefficient reduction of the textured ring decreased with increasing load and increased with increasing sliding velocity. Originality/value – Consequently, these findings provide a more in-depth understanding of the relationship between micro-textures and tribological properties of piston rings in lubricating sliding.

Frictional losses in the piston ring-pack of an engine account for approximately 20% of the total frictional losses within an engine. Although many non-conventional cylinder liner finishes are now being developed to reduce friction and oil consumption, the effects of the surface finish on ring-pack performance is not well understood. The current study focuses on modeling the effects of three-dimensional cylinder liner surface anisotropy on piston ring-pack performance. A rough surface flow simulation program was developed to generate flow factors and shear stress factors for three-dimensional cylinder liner surface textures. Rough surface contact between the ring and liner was modeled using a previously published methodology for asperity contact pressure estimation between actual rough surfaces. The surface specific flow factors, shear stress factors, and asperity contact model were used in conjunction with MIT’s previously developed ring-pack simulation program to predict the effects of different surface textures on ring-pack behavior. Specific attention was given to the effect of honing groove cross-hatch angle on piston ring-pack friction in a stationary natural gas engine application, and adverse effects on engine oil consumption and durability were also briefly considered. The modeling results suggest that ring-pack friction reduction is possible if the liner honing cross hatch angle is decreased by reducing the feed-to-speed ratio of the honing tool. Reducing the cross-hatch angle increased oil flow blockage and increased the lubricant’s effective viscosity during mixed lubrication. This allowed more load to be supported by hydrodynamic pressure, reducing ring-pack friction. However, there appeared to be a potential for increased oil consumption and scuffing tendency corresponding to a decrease in honing cross-hatch angle.

Energy and environment are of major concern in internal combustion engine component design. The piston ring-cylinder liner (PRCL) contact plays an essential part in design and is highlighted in this study. In fact, the rings ensure the sealing property, reducing the environmental impact by avoiding lubricant contamination (blow-by) and lubricant consumption. Unfortunately, when sealing, the rings generate between 11 to 24% of the friction losses in an internal combustion engine [1], thus reducing the energy efficiency of the engine. The cylinder liner surface features a special micro-geometry, a classical one is the cross-hatching pattern, obtained by honing. This texturing acts as a micro-bearing, oil reservoir and debris trap. Understanding the influence of texture parameters as groove depth and width or angle, will allow tribological improvements of the PRCL contact. The 2D transient Reynolds equation has to be solved for this kind of surface. The statistical method using the Patir and Cheng [2] flow factors is widely used. This approach lumps the different components of the surface (grooves and plateaux) and does not consider the roughness directionality. Methods decoupling both components, like the homogenization method [3] are also used. Another alternative is to use a deterministic model on measured surfaces, but this is a “hugely” expensive approach. Multigrid methods [4] are used to drastically reduce the calculational cost. The aim of the current study is to facilitate the understanding of measured surface calculations. Hence, analytical surfaces are used. They allow a flexible handling of the cross-hatching parameters. The plateaux are perfectly smooth and the grooves are sinusoidally shaped. The top ring is modelled using a parabolic profile. Periodic boundary conditions are used in the orthoradial direction and zero pressure conditions (Dirichlet) in the axial direction. To investigate the effect of different parameters, various imposed film thicknesses are applied and the mean load carrying capacity (LCC) over time is calculated. When representing the LCC corresponding to each parameter compared to the smooth LCC, as a function of the logarithm of the minimum film thickness, the curves are quite linear for small values of the film thickness and then for larger values they converge to 1.
