Physical Activity Among Canadian Children on School Days and Nonschool Days

Background:Schools are frequently cited as a favorable venue to promote physical activity (PA), however little data exist describing times when students are least active. Our objective was to overcome this limitation and describe time periods when students are least active.Methods:We used a cross-sectional design to assess patterns of PA in 923 grade 5 students [mean age: 10.9 (± 0.4) years] from 30 schools in Alberta, Canada. Students wore time-stamped pedometers for 9 consecutive days, providing 7 full days of data. We compared step counts adjusted for nonwear time between school days and nonschool days as well as during school hours and after school hours.Results:689 (75%) students provided complete data. The average daily step count was higher on school days (boys 13,476 ± 4123 step/day; girls 11,436 ± 3158 steps/day) than nonschool days (boys 11,009 ± 5542 steps/day; girls 10,256 ± 5206 steps/day). More steps were also taken during school hours than nonschool hours (boys +206 ± 420 steps/hour, P < .001; girls 210 ± 347, P < .001 steps/hour).Conclusions:PA levels of children are below Canadian recommended levels for optimal growth and health. Health promotion should emphasize PA particularly among girls, outside school hours, and weekends.

Purpose. To broadly assess changes in key health behaviors (physical activity, fruit and vegetable consumption, smoking, and alcohol consumption) and one outcome (body mass index) between 2001-2006 and 2011-2016. Design. Repeated cross-sectional study. Setting. The United States of America. Participants. Noninstitutionalized adults age 24 to 39 participating in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Analysis. We used 2-sample t tests and χ2 tests to compare differences in health behaviors between the 2 time periods. Results. Data revealed a downward trend in both moderate and vigorous physical activity (P = .00), and fruit and vegetable consumption decreased (P = .003). Cigarette smoking decreased (P = .04), and there was no substantive change in heavy drinking between the 2 time periods. Body mass index was higher in the later time period (P = .00). Conclusion. Despite sustained funding efforts, we found little evidence that health behaviors improved between the 2 time periods. Indeed, many health behaviors have remained the same or worsened over time. These findings suggest the need to reflect on the appropriateness of the health promotion approaches being used.

Prior studies have not explored the association of smartwatch-measured physical activity with home BP. Objective We aimed to study the association of habitual physical activity with home BP. Methods Consenting electronic Framingham Heart Study (eFHS) participants were provided with a study smartwatch (Apple Watch Series 0) and Bluetooth-enabled home BP cuff. Participants were instructed to wear the watch daily and transmit BP values weekly. We measured habitual physical activity as the average daily step count determined by the smartwatch. We estimated the cross-sectional association between physical activity and average home BP using linear mixed effects models adjusting for age, sex, wear time, antihypertensive drug use, and familial structure. Results We studied 660 eFHS participants (mean age 53 years, SD 9 years; 387 [58.6%] women; 602 [91.2%] White) who wore the smartwatch 5 or more hours per day for 30 or more days and transmitted three or more BP readings. The mean daily step count was 7595 (SD 2718). The mean home systolic and diastolic BP (mmHg) were 122 (SD 12) and 76 (SD 8). Every 1000 increase in the step count was associated with a 0.49 mmHg lower home systolic BP (P=.004) and 0.36 mmHg lower home diastolic BP (P=.003). The association, however, was attenuated and became statistically nonsignificant with further adjustment for BMI. Conclusions In this community-based sample of adults, higher daily habitual physical activity measured by a smartwatch was associated with a moderate, but statistically significant, reduction in home BP. Differences in BMI among study participants accounted for the majority of the observed association.

Obesity is the accumulation of fat in adipose tissue that can interfere with health. The study aims to determine the prevalence and factors that influence the incidence of obesity and its relationship with performance in obese health workers. Research methods, was used cross-sectional design with a quantitative approach. Samples are 205 health workers who are obese as many as 205 people, conducted at 2018. Analysis of data using ligistic regression with stata program. The results showed that there was a significant relationship between obesity and the performance of puskesmas staff (p= 0,0001). The drug use variable was the most dominant variable towards obese health workers (OR= 1,8; 95% CI: 0,99-3,26), (p = 0.052), meaning that severe obesity in older respondents used the drug 1,8 times greater than not using drugs. In conclusion, some of the factors most related to obesity are the duration of drug use and the factor most related to performance is obesity in health workers is the sex factor. Suggestions, health promotion activities for health workers related specifically about healthy community movements include strengthening physical activity, regular health checks and consuming vegetables and fruit. Obesitas adalah kondisi ketidak normalan penimbunan atau akumulasi dari lemak dalam jaringan adiposa yang dapat mengganggu kesehatan. Penelitian bertujuan untuk mengetahui prevalensi dan faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi kejadian obesitas dan hubungannya dengan kinerja pada petugas kesehatan yang obesitas. Metode penelitian, menggunakan desain potong lintang dengan pendekatan kuantitatif. Sampel merupakan petugas kesehatan yang mengalami obesitas sebanyak 205 orang, dilakukan dari tanggal 08 Agustus s/d 31 Agustus 2018. Analsis data dengan menggunakan ligistic regresi dengan program stata. Hasil  analisis  bivariat  diketahui ada hubungan yang signifikan antara obesitas dengan kinerja petugas puskesmas (p= 0,0001). Variabel penggunaan obat adalah variabel yang paling dominan terhadap obesitas petugas kesehatan (OR=  1,8; 95% CI: 0,99-3,26), (p= 0,052), artinya obesitas berat  pada responden lama menggunakan obat  1,8 kali lebih besar dibandingkan dengan tidak menggunakan obat. Kesimpulan,   beberapa faktor yang paling berhubungan dengan obesitas adalah lama penggunaan obat dan faktor paling berhubungan dengan kinerja adalah obesitas pada petugas kesehatan adalah faktor jenis kelamin. Saran, kegiatan promosi kesehatan bagi tenaga kesehatan terkait khususnya tentang gerakan masyarakat sehat meliputi penguatan aktifitas fisik, pemeriksaan kesehatan secara berkala dan mengkonsumsi sayur dan buah.

ObjectivesTo establish pupil fitness levels, and the relationship to global norms and physical education (PE) enjoyment. To measure and describe physical activity (PA) levels during secondary school PE lessons, in the context of recommended levels, and how levels vary with activity and lesson type.MethodsA cross-sectional design; 10 697 pupils aged 12.5 (SD 0.30) years; pupils who completed a multistage fitness test and wore accelerometers to measure PA during PE lessons. Multilevel models estimated fitness and PE activity levels, accounting for school and class-level clustering.ResultsCardiorespiratory fitness was higher in boys than girls (ß=−0.48; 95% CI −0.56 to −0.39, p<0.001), within absolute terms 51% of boys and 54% of girls above the 50th percentile of global norms. On average, pupils spent 23.8% of PE lessons in moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA), and 7.1% in vigorous PA (VPA). Fitness-focused lessons recorded most VPA in co-educational (ß=1.09; 95% CI 0.43 to 1.74) and boys-only lessons (ß=0.32; 95% CI −0.21 to 0.85). In girls-only lessons, track athletics recorded most VPA (ß=0.13; 95% CI −0.50 to 0.75) and net/wall/racket games (ß=0.97; 95% CI 0.12 to 1.82) the most MVPA. For all lesson types, field athletics was least active (ß=−0.85; 95% CI −1.33 to −0.36). There was a relationship of enjoyment of PE to fitness (ß=1.03; 95% CI 0.83 to 1.23), and this relationship did not vary with sex (ß=−0.14 to 0.23; 95% CI −0.16 to 0.60).ConclusionsPE lessons were inactive compared with current guidelines. We propose that if we are to continue to develop a range of sporting skills in schools at the same time as increasing levels of fitness and PA, there is a need to introduce additional sessions of PE activity focused on increasing physical activity.Trial registration numberNCT03286725.

Interest in analyzing physically active behaviors during school recesses has grown in recent years as the school environment has consolidated (recess, physical education classes, lunch-time, before and after school) as a crucial space to bring these levels towards those recommended through intervention programs and improvements in the school environment. Unfortunately, in most of these studies, children do not achieve the 60 min a day of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) recommended by the World Health Organization. The aim of this systematic review is to analyze the cross-sectional, longitudinal, and intervention studies objectively measured with accelerometers that have emerged in recent years to determine the amount of MVPA of children at recess. This systematic review followed the PRISMA guidelines. The extraction process for the studies included in this systematic review yielded a total of 43 articles. The studies were classified according to the methodological nature of the research: cross-sectional (n = 34), longitudinal (n = 3) and quasi-experimental (n = 6). The results of the studies confirm that during the recess period younger children are physically more active than older ones and that in general, boys are more physically active than girls. In addition, the data show that the school contributes to more than 40% of the total MVPA. The intervention programs led to an increase in MVPA of up to 5%. Providing schools with equipment and facilities shows that intervention programs are beneficial for raising children’s levels of physical activity.

Introduction: The recent advent of smartphone-linked wearable pedometers offers a novel opportunity to promote physical activity using mobile health (mHealth) technology. Hypothesis: We hypothesized that digital activity tracking and smart (automated, real-time, personalized) texting would increase physical activity. Methods: mActive (NCT01917812) was a 5-week, blinded, sequentially-randomized, parallel group trial that enrolled patients at an academic preventive cardiovascular center in Baltimore, MD, USA from January 17 th to May 20 th , 2014. Eligible patients were 18-69 year old smartphone users who reported low leisure-time physical activity by a standardized survey. After establishing baseline activity during a 1-week blinded run-in, we randomized 2:1 to unblinded or blinded tracking in phase I (2 weeks), then randomized unblinded participants 1:1 to receive or not receive smart texts in phase II (2 weeks). Smart texts provided automated, personalized, real-time coaching 3 times/day towards a daily goal of 10,000 steps. The primary outcome was change in daily step count. Results: Forty-eight patients (22 women, 26 men) enrolled with a mean (SD) age of 58 (8) years, body mass index of 31 (6), and baseline daily step count of 9670 (4350). The phase I change in activity was non-significantly higher in unblinded participants versus blinded controls by 1024 steps/day (95% CI -580-2628, p=0.21). In phase II, smart text receiving participants increased their daily steps over those not receiving texts by 2534 (1318-3750, p<0.001) and over blinded controls by 3376 (1951-4801, p<0.001). The unblinded-texts group had the highest proportion attaining the 10,000 steps/day goal (p=0.02) (Figure). Conclusions: In present-day adult smartphone users receiving preventive cardiovascular care in the United States, a technologically-integrated mHealth strategy combining digital tracking with automated, personalized, real-time text message coaching resulted in a large short-term increase in physical activity.

This study aimed to identify the prevalence of physical inactivity and associated factors in adolescents, using a cross-sectional design with a sample of 1,455 adolescents (741 females). Data were collected using a questionnaire consisting of socio-demographic, perceptual, and behavioral variables. Physical activity was estimated with the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Older Children and Adolescents. Prevalence of physical inactivity was 68% (95%CI: 65.6%-70.4%). The following variables remained associated with physical inactivity in the adjusted analysis (p < 0.05): living in an apartment, female gender, older adolescents, lower self-rated physical activity compared to peers, low perception of maternal physical activity, passive commuting to school, non-participation in physical education at school, non-enjoyment of physical education classes, and limited involvement in other types of physical exercise besides physical education at school. There were a high proportion of inactive adolescents. Strategies to prevent physical inactivity in adolescents should be elaborated with a central role for the school and family.
