THE PROTEIN CONTENT OF CORRESPONDING GRADES OF WHEAT DRAWN FROM THE NORTHERN AND SOUTHERN PORTIONS OF WESTERN CANADA

Data for 12 crops, 1927 to 1938, have been used to examine the protein contents of Grades 1, 2, and 3 Northern drawn from the northern and north-western area, and from the central and southern area, of Western Canada. The boundary between the areas was taken as that dividing zones averaging over and under 13% protein. Grades 1, 2, and 3 Northern from the southern area averaged 14.2, 14.0, and 14.0% protein; those from the northern area averaged 12.8, 12.0, and 11.6% protein; and the average difference between zones for all three grades was 2.0%. The reasons for the increase in the spread between zones with decreasing grade are discussed. For the 12 yr. period, the average protein content of shipments of Western Canadian wheat is estimated as 13.5%. If no wheat had been shipped from the northern zone the average protein level would have been increased by about 0.5 per cent.

Our study compares the content in polyphenolic compounds and hypericin, in four species of Hypericum - H. perforatum L., H. maculatum Cr., H. hirsutum L., H. tetrapterum Fr. (syn. Hypericumacutum Mnch.) harvested from spontaneous flora in the north-western area of Transylvania, Romania. These species represent an important source of such compounds with different biological actions. After making the extracts, they were subjected to HPLC-SM analysis. The presence of rutoside in the largest amount (462.82 mg %) in the H. perforatum extract was observed, this containing most of the flavonoid heterosides. For the species H. maculatum, the presence in a much higher amount of the hyperoside (976.36 mg %) is characteristic compared to the other species. Quercetol is the best represented of the flavonoid aglycons, its concentration being the highest in H. hirsutum (659.66 mg %). The hypericin content ranges from 0.2171 g % in the H. tetrapterum extract, to 0.0314 g % in the methanol extract of H. maculatum.The highest antioxidant properties measured by FRAP method were recorded in the case of H. perforatum and H. maculatum.

The effect of different and shifting dietary protein levels on hair growth and the resulting pelt quality in mink was studied. Two groups of pastel female mink were fed either 59% (high protein, HP) or 40% (low protein, LP) of metabolisable energy (ME) from protein during pregnancy and lactation. Shortly after weaning, kits from females fed the LP diet were put on a new LP diet (21% protein of ME). Kits from females fed HP were randomly distributed to four experimental groups fed a new HP diet (34% protein of ME) and three of these groups were shifted to diets with 21% protein at different times during June until September. Skin biopsies were taken at 4, 6, 23 and, 29 wk of age. Histological techniques and computer-assisted light microscopy were used to determine the ratio of activity (ROA) of underfur and guard hairs, respectively, defined as the number of growing hairs as a percentage of the total number of hairs. The hair fibre length and thickness were determined by morphometric methods and correlated with fur properties of dried pelts judged by sensory methods. It was documented that 40% of ME from protein during pregnancy and lactation was sufficient for mink kits to express their genetic capacity to produce hair follicles. In males, a reduced protein level from the age of 15 wk or 22 wk until pelting disturbed moulting, indicated by a low ROA of underfur hairs at 23 wk, and consequently reduced the growth and development of the winter coat. A constantly low protein level from conception until the age of 29 wk did not disturb moulting, but led to a reduction of primeness and especially of the underfur length and fibre thickness of the winter coat. A low protein level from the age of 9 wk only reduced the thickness of the underfur fibres. Hair growth, final fur volume, and general quality of the winter coat of males were influenced negatively and to the same degree in all groups fed the LP diet in part of the growth period. The number of underfur hairs per area (hair density) of the winter coat was not influenced by the dietary treatment meaning that the protein content of 21% of ME in the LP diet was high enough for the mink to express its genetic capacity to develop hair follicles. However, this low protein content led to a reduction of hair fibre length and hair fibre thickness of the underfur. Overall, this study demonstrated that hair growth and hair properties in pelts are very dependent on the dietary protein supply in the period from 22 wk of age until pelting, irrespective of the supply in the preceding periods. The formative period (prior to A.D. 300) comprises the Mamom and Chicanel phases at Uaxactun and coeval phases found elsewhere in the central area (Petén, British Honduras, Chiapas, Tabasco, lower Motagua, drainage), the northern area (Yucatan, northern Campeche, Quintana Roo) and, as we shall see, the southern area.

PURPOSE In this study, we aimed to investigate trends in the age-standardized and age-specific incidence rates in two distinct regions (the northern and southern areas) of South Africa covered by a population-based cancer registry. In addition, trends in coverage of the cervical cancer screening program were assessed using routine health service data. METHODS Occurrences (topography C53.0-C53.9) for the period 1998-2012 were extracted from a cancer registry database from which basic descriptive statistics and frequencies were analyzed for all variables using CanReg4. Trends over time were estimated using a direct standardization method and world standard population as a reference. Screening coverage annualized figures for women age ≥ 30 years by sub–health district were extracted from the District Health Information System. RESULTS In the northern area, annual age-standardized incidence rates per 100,000 women increased from 24.0 (95% CI, 21.1 to 27.0) in 1998-2002 to 39.0 (95% CI, 35.6 to 42.5) in 2008-2012, with a screening coverage rate of 15% by 2012. In contrast, no increase was observed in incidence in the southern area, with rates of 20.0 (95% CI, 18.5 to 21.4) in 1998-2002 and 18.8 (95% CI, 16.2 to 21.4) in 2008-2012, and the southern area had a higher screening coverage of 41% in 2012. Overall, the percentage distribution of stage at diagnosis showed that 28.5% of occurrences were diagnosed at disease stages I and II and 35%, at III and IV; 36% had with missing stage information (2003-2012). In 77% of occurrences, a histologically verified diagnosis was made, compared with only 12.3% by cytology. CONCLUSION This study has demonstrated an almost two-fold increase in the incidence rate in the northern area but little change in the southern area of the cancer registry.

 This article articulates myself and my community’s journey navigating the Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI) records written historically about our People (the Bloods) in order to identify who our ancestors are. Through the examination of historical texts, records and materials written by the Oblate missionaries of North-Western Canada, we were able to discover the hidden lived experiences of our People. The purpose of this study was to provide new scholarly insights into the texts and records of the Oblates regarding the Blood People. This research took place at the Alberta Provincial Archives over a seven-month period. This article reviews who the Oblates of Mary Immaculate were, and what measures were used to uncover our ancestors in the Provincial Archives. Data analysis determined that the individual archival records fragmented Indigenous Peoples and their history; however, collectively these records blend together to tell a story.

The influence of dough-moulding techniques on the volumes of test loaves has been investigated. The effects of variety of wheat, locality of growth, and season have also been studied. Because of the strong influence of variety, locality, and seasonal conditions on the protein content of wheat and flour, and in turn the effect of protein level on loaf volume and baking quality, an analysis of covariance with protein content was performed. Where protein levels in the flour were high, hand-moulded loaves had greater volume than those moulded by machine, the reverse being the case where protein levels were low. Flours of Spica variety tended to be overrated and of Heron variety underrated by hand moulding relative to machine moulding but the manner of moulding did not affect the overall ranking of varieties. Variety, season, and locality each influenced volume even after allowing for the effect of protein level. Varieties should be evaluated over a range of environments because of variability from trial to trial.

Mottling in wheat is the condition whereby starchy and vitreous sections are found together in a grain or a sample. The occurrence of mottling in nine varieties was studied in relation to flour protein content, proportion of large starch granules, and gluten strength. When protein levels fell below 10 per cent the varieties differed in mottling behaviour. Some varieties lost vitreousness but became opaque rather than mottled; others became mottled. It was concluded that although low protein level is a predisposing factor, mottling is aggravated by factors associated with high dough stability and a high proportion of large starch granules. The interaction of these factors is used to explain the differing susceptibilities of varieties to mottling.

In a 6-yr study at Swift Current, Saskatchewan in the Brown soil zone of Western Canada, preseeding tillage did not significantly influence the volume weight or yield of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). There were some indications that protein content of wheat was enhanced by preseeding tillage but the results were not consistent. A 2-yr supplementary study, on the other hand, did not show any benefits from preseeding tillage. Plant density was lower on plots seeded with the discer, whether direct-seeded or following preseeding tillage. The seed was also placed deeper in the soil compared to seeding with the hoe press or double-disc seeders, as indicated by the length of the plants’ subcoronal internodes. However, the differences in plant density and depth of seed placement were not reflected in the final wheat yields; this emphasized the ability of the wheat plants to compensate for establishment differences within the moisture limits encountered. There were no significant differences in volume weight, yield, or protein content of wheat for those seeders that provided total tillage during the seeding operation (discer or cultivator-rod weeder drills) as compared to seeders that provided only minimal tillage in the seed row (hoe, single-disc or triple-disc drills) when preseeding tillage was not practiced.
