Rates of Hg methylation and demethylation were measured in anoxic hypolimnetic waters of two pristine Wisconsin lakes using stable isotopes of Hg as tracers. One of the lakes is a clear-water seepage lake situated in sandy terrain with minimal wetland influence. The other is a dark-water lake receiving channelized inputs from a relatively large terrestrial wetland. Methyl mercury (MeHg) accumulated in the anoxic hypolimnia of both lakes during summer stratification, reaching concentrations of 0.8 ng·L–1 in the clear-water lake and 5 ng·L–1 in the dark-water lake. The stable isotopic assays indicated that rate constants of Hg(II) methylation (Km) ranged from 0.01 to 0.04·day–1 in the clear-water lake and from 0.01 to 0.09·day–1 in the dark-water lake, depending on the depth stratum. On average, Km was threefold greater in the dark-water lake. Hypolimnetic demethylation rate constants (Kdm) averaged 0.03·day–1 in the clear-water lake and 0.05·day–1 in the dark-water lake. These methylation rates were sufficient to account for the observed accumulation of MeHg in hypolimnetic water during summer in both lakes. Despite substantial export of MeHg from the wetland to the dark-water lake, our study indicates that in-lake production and decomposition of MeHg dominated the MeHg cycle in both lakes.

The work described in this and the following paper is a continuation of that in parts I and II, devoted to elucidation of the mechanism of the reactions of methylene with chloroalkanes, with particular reference to the reactivities of singlet and triplet methylene in abstraction and insertion processes. The products of the reaction between methylene, prepared by the photolysis of ketene, and 1-chloropropane have been identified and estimated and their dependence on reactant pressures, photolysing wavelength and presence of foreign gases (oxygen and carbon mon­oxide) has been investigated. Both insertion and abstraction mechanisms contribute significantly to the over-all reaction, insertion being relatively much more important than with chloroethane. This type of process appears to be confined to singlet methylene. If, as seems likely, there is no insertion into C—Cl bonds under our conditions (see part IV), insertion into C2—H and C3—H bonds occurs in statistical ratio, approximately. On the other hand, the chlorine substituent reduces the probability of insertion into C—H bonds in its vicinity. As in the chloroethane system, both species of methylene show a high degree of selectivity in their abstraction reactions. We find that k S Cl / k S H >7.7, k T Cl / k T H < 0.14, where the k ’s are rate constants for abstraction, and the super- and subscripts indicate the species of methylene and the type of atom abstracted, respectively. Triplet methylene is discriminating in hydrogen abstraction from 1-C 3 H 7 Cl, the overall rates for atoms attached to C1, C2, C3 being in the ratios 2.63:1:0.

Two small, adjacent kettle lakes in southern Ontario were sampled during spring and summer 1987. The data comprised weekly samples of zooplankton and water chemistry, monthly diel assessments of the densities of pelagic fish and zooplankton found at 1-m depth intervals in the water column, and an annual mark and recapture assessment of the entire fish population. The two lakes had very different community structures. Haynes Lake was characterized by high piscivore numbers, few planktivores, a relatively large assemblage of large bodied zooplankton, low chlorophyll a concentrations, and clear water. Lake St. George had a lower piscivore to planktivore ratio, smaller zooplankton, more chlorophyll a, and murkier water. Comparisons of trophic level biomasses for the two lakes suggested that in both communities, the relationships between piscivores and planktivores and between planktivores and zooplankton were strongly correlated with predator abundances. In the more oligotrophy community (Haynes Lake) this influence extended weakly to the phytoplankton, but in the more eutrophic system, little of the variability in chlorophyll a with respect to total phosphorus could be explained by total zooplankton (or Daphnia) abundance. This suggests that for freshwater pelagic communities, top-down effects may be stronger in more oligotrophic systems.

New stable isotopic data from mineral separates of albite, scapolite, amphibole, quartz, and calcite of metasomatic rocks (Bamble lithotectonic domain) give increased knowledge on fluid type, source, and evolution during metamorphism. Albite from a variety of albitites givesδ18OSMOWvalues of 5.1–11.1‰, while quartz from clinopyroxene-bearing albitite gives 11.5–11.6‰.δ18OSMOWvalues for calcite samples varies between 3.4 and 12.4‰and shows more consistentδ13C values of −4.6 to-6.0‰. Amphibole from scapolite metagabbro yields aδ18OSMOWvalue of 4.3 to 6.7‰andδDSMOWvalue of −84 to −50‰, while the scapolite givesδ18OSMOWvalues in the range of 7.4 to10.6‰. These results support the interpretation that the original magmatic rocks were metasomatised by seawater solutions with a possible involvement from magmatic fluids. Scapolitisation and albitisation led to contrasting chemical evolution with respect to elements like P, Ti, V, Fe, and halogens. The halogens deposited as Cl-scapolite were dissolved by albitisation fluid and reused as a ligand for metal transport. Many of the metal deposits in the Bamble lithotectonic domain, including Fe-ores, rutile, and apatite deposits formed during metasomatism. Brittle to ductile deformation concurrent with metasomatic infiltration illustrates the dynamics and importance of metasomatic processes during crustal evolution.

To elucidate the relationship between stable isotopes of precipitation (SIP) and the extreme drought in Kunming area, based on the stable isotopes data of the GNIP in Kunming site from 1986 to 2003, the precipitation line equation is brought forward and the seasonal change rule of stable isotopes are discussed. The stable isotopic compositions of precipitation exhibit great diversities in different seasons during to influences of multiple factors, such as monsoon, rainfall amount moisture source and others. The δ18O values in rainwater exhibit significant seasonal variations, the average of-10.12‰ in rainy season, the dry season is-4.5‰, having lower values in the rainy season and higher one in the dry season. The amount effect of precipitation is very distinct, that concealed the temperature effect. Got the special geographical position,dvalues present unique characteristics, the average ofdvalues is 10.78‰ in rainy season, and is 4.86‰ in dry season, the mean value is generally lower than most parts of the world.

Laboratory data for local scour depth regarding the size of wide piers are presented. Clear water scour tests were performed for various pier widths (0.06, 0.076, 0.102, 0.14 and 0.165 m), two types of pier shapes (circular and rectangular) and two types of uniform cohesionless bed sediment (d50 = 0.23 and d50 = 0.80 mm). New data are presented and used to demonstrate the effects of pier width, pier shape and sediment size on scour depth. The influence of equilibrium time (te) on scouring processes is also discussed. Equilibrium scour depths were found to decrease with increasing values of b/d50. The temporal development of equilibrium local scour depth with new laboratory data is demonstrated for flow intensity V/Vc = 0.95. On the other hand, the results of scour mechanism have shown a significant relationship between normalized volume of scoured and deposited with pier width, b. The experimental data obtained in this study and data available from the literature for wide piers are used to evaluate predictions of existing methods.

Several prior studies investigated the use of stable isotopes of water in hydrogeological applications, most on a local scale and often involving the isotopic gradient (evaluated by exploiting the so-called altitude effect), calculated on the basis of rainwater isotopes. A few times, this gradient has been obtained using the stable isotopic contents of low-yield springs in a limited time series. Despite the fact that this method has been recognized by the hydrogeological community, marked differences have been observed with respect to the mean stable isotopes content of groundwater and rainwater. The present investigation compares the stable isotopic signatures of 23 low-yield springs discharging along two transects from the Tyrrhenian sea to the Po Plain of Italy, evaluates the different isotopic gradients and assesses their distribution in relation to some climatic and topographic conditions. Stable isotopes of water show that groundwater in the study area is recharged by precipitation and that the precipitation regime in the eastern portion of the study area is strongly controlled by a shadow effect caused by the Alps chain on the air masses from central Europe. Stable isotopes (in particular the δ18O and deuterium excess (d-excess) contents together with the obtained isotopic gradients) allow us to identify in the study area an opposite oriented orographic effect and a different provenance of the air masses. When the windward slope is located on the Tyrrhenian side, the precipitation shows a predominant oceanic origin; when the windward slope moves to the Adriatic side, the precipitation is characterized by a continental origin. The main results of this study confirm the usefulness of low-yield springs and the need for a highly detailed survey-scale hydrological investigation in the mountainous context.

The existence of two intracellular fractions of PAH was demonstrated in renal cortical slices of the rabbit on incubation with C14-labeled PAH. One of these fractions is rapidly diffusible and rapidly equilibrates with extracellular PAH. The other fraction, in contrast, diffuses and equilibrates slowly; it is responsible for the high slice to medium concentration ratio of PAH. On the basis of these results a model of the PAH transport system in slices is proposed. This consists of step I, the diffusion of PAH from the medium into the extracellular space in the tissue; there follows step II, a facilitated diffusion step at the peritubular cell membrane; within the cell step III builds up a high tissue concentration of PAH; finally step IV transfers PAH across the luminal border of the cell into the tubular lumen from which it may diffuse back into the medium. Experiments were designed in which each of these steps could be measured individually and their rate constants determined. Alteration of the value of these rate constants by specific drugs localizes the action of such compounds at the peritubular cell membrane (Benemid, 9-alphafluorohydrocortisone) or at the level of both steps II and III in the case of DNP, octanoate and Diodrast. An explanation is also offered for the effect of cold on PAH influx and efflux. It can be calculated that the contribution of step IV to the turnover of PAH in slices is not quantitatively significant.

Ordinarily, the Remotely Operated Vehicles and underwater divers, even with modern illuminating lamps, would be unable to observe objects clearly in muddy or unclear underwater condition. Efforts have therefore been made to demonstrate that in such underwater condition, it is possible to perform visual inspections and observations adequately and reliably for underwater leaking structures using novel equipment. The novel equipment works by simply supplying a clear laminar flow of water which flows over the surface of the structure to be observed. A camera eye is then placed to observe through the steady flowing clear water. Different configurations of the equipment were checked and it was found that the equipment with fitted valves installed in the flooding box in-line with flowing clear water produced the best result. The volume of water required for the observations appears constant and independent of the depth of water except during the first initial stage of flooding. On the other hand, the period of time required for clear observations increases with increase in water depth. The performance of the equipment was found independent of the nature of underwater visibility. The benefits of this work ranges from leaking structures’ close-visual inspection including leaking pipelines, to subsea pipeline field joint wrap damage inspection for beach pulls in cofferdams. This technique is considered cheap, robust and flexible.
