Management and Development of Fisheries in the Eastern Central Atlantic

The resources of the eastern central Atlantic can be divided into two parts: the northern, temperate or subtropical zone in an area where cool upwelling water gives high production of pelagic species like the sardine, sardinella, mackerel, and horsemackerel, and of demersal species like the various sea breams, hake, and several species of cephalopods; the tropical zone, roughly from Cape Verde southward, is less rich although it contains a great variety of species.Distribution of human population and of potential local markets is uneven, the greater part being in the tropical area. Except for the sardine and other fisheries of Morocco, the main locally based fisheries have been in this region. Until recently there have been mostly small inshore canoe fisheries, but the rich upwelling areas have been a strong attraction for fishermen from outside the region. These have included trawl fishermen from southern Europe, mainly interested in high-value species such as sea bream; Japanese fishermen interested in these same species and in squid, octopuses, and cuttlefish; fishermen from eastern Europe, using trawls (later purse seines) for pelagic species such as mackerel and horsemackerel; and fishermen from Scandinavia and South Africa, catching pelagic fishes, particularly sardinellas, for reduction to fish meal. Local countries have been developing their fleets; in the tropical area these include large long-range vessels for operating in the richer areas to the north and also to the south in the Benguela current.Several stocks in the region have become or are becoming heavily exploited. Necessary management action includes collecting and analyzing the basic data to assess the stocks, limiting the total amount of fishing to the level appropriate to each stock, and assuring an increasing participation in the offshore fisheries by coastal African countries.There is clearly a need for bilateral or multilateral arrangements between countries in the zone of high human population but low fish production and countries in the more productive but less populated zone. This would benefit both groups and stimulate intra-African trade and cooperation.

Determination of the complete occupational sequence of the site, including investigation of pre-12th century levels which were thoroughly studied by P. Åström since the 1970s, is the main task of the planned project. During the course of the expedition (NSCE11) in spring 2010 a ground-penetrating radar survey (GPR) was carried out at Dromolaxia Vizatzia/Hala Sultan Tekke in Area 6, leading to the discovery of a large Late Cypriote complex. The compound is bordered to the north by a substantial wall, against which nine rooms (so far) could be exposed. Two occupational phases have been verified but there are indications of a third. The suggested functions of the various structures of the most recent phase are: living, working, storage and administration spaces. The rich find contexts point to the production of textiles and metal objects, and the locally produced pottery is generally of a high quality. There are also many imports, mainly from the Mycenaean sphere of culture. The locally produced vessels from Phase 2 include the “Creature krater” which is a masterpiece of a high artistic standard. Another piece of elevated artistry is the piece of a “Warrior vase”.

A recent inventory of the benthic Gammaridea: Amphipoda species on the French continental coastline catalogued 495 species. An analysis of the biodiversity and the biogeographic relationships that exist between the French Amphipoda: Gammaridea, living on the coastline that extends along 10° latitude range in the temperate region between 41° and 51° North and the other gammaridean faunas living in the north-eastern Atlantic has drawn the pattern of diversity in this marine invertebrate group on a large biogeographical scale. Gammaridean amphipods exhibit a latitudinal gradient over the total number of species, including the continental shelf species and the bathyal species. There are four main fauna groups, which correspond to the biogeographical zones of the north-eastern Atlantic: (1) a cold arctic and cool-temperate Svalbard and Norwegian coastal fauna; (2) a cool-temperate boreal and Boreal–Lusitanian United Kingdom, Irish and English Channel shallow fauna; (3) a warm-temperate Lusitanian Bay of Biscay and subtropical central Atlantic fauna; and (4) a subtropical Mediterranean fauna. The French fauna appears particularly rich, presenting 44% of the 1119 species recorded in the north-eastern Atlantic along the 50° latitude range (30°N–80°N).  This is obviously due to France's intermediate latitudinal location within the Lusitanian temperate biogeographical zone, which produces a biogeographical cross between the boreal fauna in the north and the warm temperate and sub-tropical fauna in the south.

The waterlogged terrace wet rice-fields of Apatani Plateau located at an altitude of 1500msl in Arunachal Pradesh of the north eastern India are stocked with fish Common carp (Cyprinus carpio L) for several decades. The fishes are not fed with supplementary feeds because of the rich organic nature of the rice-fields. The study on water and soil of these fields revealed a strong co-relation to such organic nature. The wet rice-fish integrated fields exhibited the characters of shallow wet ecosystems. The water canals traversed through the rice fields were found inundated with water up to 50m showing the nature of Deep Water Rice fields (DWR) at least for one month. Significant (p<0.001) variations of water were observed for dissolved oxygen (DO) and carbon dioxide (CO2) to diurnal and seasonal changes. Alkalinity of the fields intends to play a role towards its productivity which is otherwise played by DO in other aquatic systems. Soil nitrogen reflected a gradual increasing trend of organic nature. Role of periphyton may not be ignored to the high phosphorus level of the soil at later flood phases in these fields. The settlement and subsistence patterns of the Inughuit of the Avanersuaq (Thule area) are described and analyzed for the years 1910 to 1953, when Knud Rasmussen’s trading station at Dundas was active. Inughuit subsistence was based on the rich biotic resources of the North Water polynya between Ellesmere Island and Greenland, but the analysis shows that trade, primarily with fox furs at the Thule Station, also played a major role in shaping the settlement pattern of the period. During the Thule Station Period, the named winter settlements amounted to c. 40 sites; however, only 10–15 of them were settled at any given time. The Inughuit settlement close to the station, Uummannaq, soon became the largest site in the area. The sources enable us to follow changes of residence of some hunting families over four decades. By moving their winter sites every second or third year, the families gained primary knowledge of the topography and seasonal variation of the hunting grounds in the entire Thule district during their active years. In the same way, they connected with diverse family networks through the years. Tracing the sledge routes that connected the sites over great distances reveals how decisive proximity to main and escape routes over the Ice Cap was for site location. Dog sledge technology, and thus capacity to transport people, gear, and stored food, boomed during the Thule Station Period with the wealth created from trade and access to raw materials. Mapping the main hunting grounds on the sea ice and modeling the hunters’ annual range of possibilities for accessing different game—mainly walrus, ringed seal, narwhal, and sea birds (plus some caribou)—showed that ringed seal formed the bread and butter of the subsistence economy. However, bulk resources, gained in particular from intensive spring walrus hunts at a few hot spots, as well as carefully timed consumption and sharing of the stored meat and blubber, were keys to life at the North Water polynya. Temporary settlement at the trading stations in the area—a couple of winters at a time—was also part of the risk management strategy of the Inughuit.

The Partridge Island stratigraphic section at the Bay of Fundy, Maritime Canada, reveals a continental sedimentary succession with the end-Triassic mass extinction level closely followed by basalts of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP). New Paleomagnetic data show that a short reverse magnetic polarity chron, correlative to E23r of the Newark Geomagnetic Polarity Time Scale (GPTS), is present below the extinction event. Organic carbon isotope data and basalt geochemistry further indicate that the onset of CAMP emplacement in the Bay of Fundy was roughly synchronous with emplacement in the Newark basin, but slightly postdates the oldest CAMP volcanism in Morocco by ∼20 ka. These results confirm the potential for long-distance CAMP correlations based on geochemical trace elements, indicate substantiate provincialism of latest Triassic palynoflora, and suggest a very concise period (<<100 ka) of CAMP emplacement in the northern Atlantic region.

While the Diyala (Kurdish Sirwan) River Valley is storied in Near Eastern archaeology as home to the Oriental Institute's excavations in the 1930s as well as to Robert McC. Adams’ pioneering archaeological survey, The Land Behind Baghdad, the upper reaches of the river valley remain almost unknown to modern scholarship. Yet this region, at the interface between irrigated lowland Mesopotamia and the Zagros highlands to the north and east, has long been hypothesized as central to the origins and development of complex societies. It was hotly contested by Bronze Age imperial powers, and offered one of the principle access routes connecting Mespotamia to the Iranian Plateau and beyond. This paper presents an interim report of the Sirwan Regional Project, a regional archaeological survey undertaken from 2013–2015 in a 4000 square kilometre area between the modern city of Darbandikhan and the plains south of Kalar. Encompassing a wide range of environments, from the rugged uplands of the Zagros front ranges to the rich irrigated basins of the Middle Diyala, the project has already discovered a wealth of previously unknown archaeological sites ranging in date from the Pre-Pottery Neolithic through the modern period. Following an overview of the physical geography of the Upper Diyala/Sirwan, this paper highlights key findings that are beginning to transform our understanding of this historically important but poorly known region.

Issues of management and development of the potential of ecological tourism resources in Uzbekistan, formation of the infrastructure of ecological tourism, strengthening its legal framework were analyzed. Information was also given about the rich ecotouristic facilities of Uzbekistan and the work carried out in the field of their improvement.

&lt;p&gt;The Algarve Basin is a Mesozoic sedimentary basin located in southern Portugal. The basin was initiated by rifting associated with the opening of the North and Central Atlantic Ocean during the initial breakup of Pangea. Sedimentation commenced with continental red beds, which unconformably overlie folded and faulted late Carboniferous strata. The red bed succession (Silves Sandstones) consists mainly of sandstones and conglomerates at the base, overlain by variegated mudstones interbedded with siltstones and dolomites (Silves Mudstones, Siltstones and Dolomites). The sandstones were deposited in alluvial environments, and the mudstones in alluvial to shallow lacustrine environments. Upper Triassic (Carnian to Norian) macrofossils are scarce in the red bed succession, occurring predominantly in the upper beds of the succession above the Silves Sandstones, and do not accurately constrain the age of the beginning of the Algarve Basin.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;A palynological study of a new road cut outcrop of Silves Sandstones, located in central Algarve, was undertaken in order to ascertain its age. A 3 m thick bed of grey siltstones located ca. 2.5 m above the unconformity yielded age-diagnostic palynomorphs, which date the onset of sedimentation in the basin. Samples from the latter bed yielded a moderately well preserved, low diversity palynomorph assemblage, which is dominated by &lt;em&gt;Aulisporites astigmosus, Converrucosisporites&lt;/em&gt; sp. and &lt;em&gt;Tulesporites briscoensis&lt;/em&gt;. Other taxa present in the assemblage include &lt;em&gt;Alisporites&lt;/em&gt; sp., &lt;em&gt;Calamospora&lt;/em&gt; sp., &lt;em&gt;Cycadopites&lt;/em&gt; sp., &lt;em&gt;Deltoidospora&lt;/em&gt; sp., &lt;em&gt;Ovalipollis&lt;/em&gt; cf. &lt;em&gt;ovalis&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Triadispora&lt;/em&gt; sp., and &lt;em&gt;Vallasporites ignacii&lt;/em&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The dominance of &lt;em&gt;A. astigmosus&lt;/em&gt; together with &lt;em&gt;V. ignacii&lt;/em&gt; is indicative of an early Carnian age based on comparison with independently dated sections described elsewhere in Europe. This new dating evidence thus constrains the beginning of sedimentation in the Algarve Basin to the earliest Late Triassic. The co-occurrence of &lt;em&gt;T. briscoensis&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;A. astigmosus&lt;/em&gt; suggests a mixing of palynofloral elements typical of North American and central European Carnian assemblages respectively, which is consistent with the intermediate position of Portugal between those regions. The biology of the sparid, Acanthopagrus berda (goldsilk sea bream) was investigated using catch samples obtained from artisanal fishers at selected fish landing sites in the Marereni and Ngomeni fishing areas on the north coast of Kenya. This species has not previously been studied in Kenya although it forms significant proportions of artisanal fish landings and is also a promising aquaculture species. In order to contribute to knowledge of this species, the length-weight relationship, condition factor and feeding preference for prey items were studied in a total of 751 specimens sampled from July 2013 to July 2014. Length-weight relationships for male and female individuals from both fishing areas were strongly correlated (Males: Marereni - R2 = 0.920, Ngomeni - R2 = 0.983; Females: Marereni - R2 = 0.966, Ngomeni - R2 = 0.941). The condition factor of mixed sexes was not significantly different between the two fishing areas (Marereni 2.15 ± 0.08; Ngomeni 2.05 ± 0.02) at p > 0.05. Gut content analysis recorded a total of 5 taxa in the diet (gastropods, molluscs, detritus, crustaceans and fish). The overall sample was dominated by female individuals with an overall sex ratio of females (405 individuals) to males (338 individuals) of 1:0.8 being significantly different at p < 0.05. The species exhibited isometric and positive allometric growth patterns, indicative of the physiological well-being of this species on the north coast of Kenya. Gonadal maturation occurred throughout the year with peaks in July, August and September. However, more work is needed on the biology, distribution, spawning grounds, behavior, and migration patterns along the Kenyan coast.
