Structural appraisal of thin film magnetic media is very important because their magnetic characters such as magnetic hysteresis and recording behaviors are drastically altered by the grain structure of the film. However, in general, the surface of thin film magnetic media of magnetic recording disk which is process completed is protected by several-nm thick sputtered carbon. Therefore, high-resolution observation of a cross-sectional plane of a disk is strongly required to see the fine structure of the thin film magnetic media. Additionally, observation of the top protection film is also very important in this field.Recently, several different process-completed magnetic disks were examined with a UHR-SEM, the JEOL JSM 890, which consisted of a field emission gun and a high-performance immerse lens. The disks were cut into approximately 10-mm squares, the bottom of these pieces were carved into more than half of the total thickness of the disks, and they were bent. There were many cracks on the bent disks. When these disks were observed with the UHR-SEM, it was very difficult to observe the fine structure of thin film magnetic media which appeared on the cracks, because of a very heavy contamination on the observing area.

SummaryA new method for assessment of platelet sensitivity to ADP-aggregation was devised. Its reproducibility and the correlations between the values obtained by this method, the optical density (O. D.) method, and the screen filtration pressure (SFP) method were assessed. In summary, this method may be said to have three main points:1. It can be performed without centrifugation, avoiding mechanical stress to platelets, using only 0.8 ml. of blood and inexpensive equipment.2. It may reflect different aspects of platelet function from the O. D. method and the SFP method, despite the positive significant correlations between the values obtained by these three methods.3. It was proved to be highly reproducible and is thought to be useful clinically.By using this method, the effect of sustained isometric exercise by handgripping on platelet aggregability was assessed in coronary sclerotic and cerebral arteriosclerotic patients on placebo and EG-626, a newly synthesized cyclic AMP phosphodiesterase inhibitor. On placebo, an enhancement of platelet sensitivity was observed after isometric exercise in coronary and cerebral arteriosclerotic patients but not in healthy control subjects. The enhancement was prevented by pretreatment of EG-626, administered orally 1.5 hours prior to exercise.

Co-Zr substituted M-type hexagonal barium ferrites, with chemical formula BaCoxZrxFe12-2xO19 (where x = 0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0), have been synthesized by double sintering ceramic method. The crystallographic properties, grain morphology and magnetic properties of these ferrites have been investigated by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM). The XRD patterns confirm the single phase with hexagonal structure of prepared ferrites. The magnetic properties have been investigated as a function of Co and Zr ion composition at an applied field in the range of 20 KOe. These studies indicate that the saturation magnetization (Ms) in the samples increases initially up to the Co-Zr composition of x=0.6 and decreases thereafter. On the other hand, the coercivity (Hc) and Remanent magnetization (Mr) are found to decrease continuously with increasing Co-Zr content. This property is most useful in permanent magnetic recording. The observed results are explained on the basis of site occupation of Co and Zr ions in the samples.

<p><a></a>Controlling molecular magnetic anisotropy via structural engineering is delicate and fascinating, especially for single-molecule magnets (SMMs). Herein a family of dysprosium single-ion magnets (SIMs) sitting in pentagonal bipyramid geometry have been synthesized with the variable-size terminal ligands and counter anions, through which the subtle coordination geometry of Dy(III) can be finely tuned based on the size effect. The effective energy barrier (Ueff) successfully increases from 439 K to 632 K and the magnetic hysteresis temperature (under a 200 Oe/s sweep rate) raises from 11 K to 24 K. Based on the crystal-field theory, a semi-quantitative magneto-structural correlation deducing experimentally for the first time is revealed that the Ueff is linearly proportional to the structural-related value S20 corresponding to the axial coordination bond lengths and the bond angles. Through the evaluation of the remanent magnetization from hysteresis, quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM) is found to exhibit negative correlation with the structural-related value Stun corresponding to the axial coordination bond angles.<br></p>

A dichlorido-bridged dinuclear dysprosium(III) single-molecule magnet [Dy2L2(<i>µ</i>-Cl)2(THF)2] has been made using a diamine-bis(phenolate) ligand, H2L. Magnetic studies show an energy barrier for magnetization reversal (<i>U</i>eff) around 1000 K. Exchange-biasing effect is clearly seen in magnetic hysteresis with steps up to 4 K. <i>Ab</i> initio calculations exclude the possibility of pure dipolar origin of this effect leading to the conclusion that super-exchange <i>via</i> the chloride bridging ligands is important.
