Copper-matrix composites reinforced with SiC particles are prepared by mechanical alloying. The microstructure characteristics, relative density, hardness, tensile strength, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and wear properties of the composites are investigated in this paper. The results indicate that the relative density, macro-hardness and mechanical properties of composites are improved by modifying the surface of SiC particles with Cu and Ni . The electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity of composites, however, are not obviously improved. For a given volume fraction of SiC , the Cu / SiC ( Ni ) has higher mechanical properties than Cu / SiC ( Cu ). The wear resistance of the composites are improved by the addition of SiC . The composites with optimized interface have lower wear rate.

Copper matrix composites reinforced with 3D-SiC network (15v% and 20v% SiC) were fabricated by squeezing copper alloy into 3D-SiC network preforms. The thermo-physical properties of the copper matrix composites were investigated. The specific heat capacities of the composites were about 0.39~0.50 J•g-1•K-1. The coefficients of thermal expansion (CTEs) of the composites were found to be lower than 6.9×10-6 -1 at Room Temperature. The composites exhibited high thermal stability for 3D-SiC network advent. The thermal conductivity of the composites was in the range of 50~80W•m−1•K−1. The thermo-physical properties of Cu matrix composites had a great relationship with the structures of 3D-SiC network preforms. The thermal conductivity of the composites decreased with an increase in the volume fraction of SiC or the structures of the limbs changing compacted, but the CTEs were not completely according this rule.

In this work, SiC and Cu particles were utilized to enhance the thermal and mechanical properties of Al matrix composites. The ball-milling and cold-compact methods were applied to prepare Al matrix composites, and the uniform distribution of SiC and Cu particles in the composite confirms the validity of our preparation method. After characterizing the thermal conductivity and the compressibility of the prepared composites, results show that small particles have a higher potential to improve compressibility than large particles, which is attributed to the size effect of elastic modulus. The addition of SiC to the Al matrix will improve the compressibility behavior of Al matrix composites, and the compressibility can be enhanced by 100% when SiC content is increased from 0 to 30%. However, the addition of SiC particles has a negative effect on thermal conductivity because of the low thermal conductivity of SiC particles. The addition of Cu particles to Al-SiC MMCs could further slightly improve the compressibility behavior of Al-SiC/Cu MMCs, while the thermal conductivity could be enhanced by about 100% when the Cu content was increased from 0 to 30%. To meet the need for low density and high thermal conductivity in applications, it is more desirable to enhance the specific thermal conductivity by enlarging the preparation pressure and/or sintering temperature. This work is expected to supply some information for preparing Al matrix composites with low density but high thermal conductivity and high compressibility.

Electroless plating technology was applied in order to improve the poor wettability between copper and SiC. β-SiC(w+p)/Cu composites were fabricated by hot-press sintering. The influences of SiC volume fraction on microstructure, relative density and wear propertity were researched in detail. It turned out that SiC particles and wiskers distributed in Cu matrix homogeneously. And with the increase of SiC volume fraction, the relative density and friction coefficient were reduced respectively, the wear-resistant improved greatly.

The copper matrix composites reinforced by different WCP volume fraction were fabricated via Vacuum Hot-pressed Sintering technique. The tensile performance and fracture behavior of WCP/Cu composites were studied by uniaxial tension tests and the fracture surfaces were examined by SEM. The test results of mechanical properties show that the WCP/Cu composites exhibit obvious improvement of tensile property comparing with that of the matrix. The fracture surface morphology indicate a trend that the fracture of WCP/Cu composites changes from debonding to cleavage with the increase of the WCP volume fraction.

In order to obtain materials for electronic applications that exhibit both excellent thermal conductivity and low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), copper matrix composites have been reinforced by short high modulus graphite fibers. The lack of fiber/matrix interaction prevents any degradation of the carbon reinforcement during the elaboration steps and the normal use of these materials. Elaboration conditions, such as mixing conditions of the short carbon fibers and the copper powder, dimension and shape of the two powders, and finally densification atmosphere, temperature, pressure and time, have been optimized. Main parameters involved in the thermal properties of the Cu/C composite materials have been analyzed and adjusted. CTE is mainly related with the carbon volume fraction; CTE ranging from 9 to 13 10-6/°C can be reproductively obtained with carbon volume fraction ranging from 50% to 20%. Thermal conductivity properties are more complex and are linked mainly with 1) the porosity level inside the material, and 2) the orientation, properties and volume fraction of the carbon fibers. For short carbon fibers, in plane thermal conductivity ranging from 200 to 550 W/mK have been reproductively measured associated with thermal conductivity through-thickness ranging from 150 to 300 W/mK.

Aluminium matrix composites reinforced by Al2O3 particles has been produced by adding NH4AlO(OH)HCO3 into molten ADC12 Al-Si alloy, where the γ-Al2O3 reinforcement particles are formed by decomposing reaction of NH4AlO(OH)HCO3 during stirring. The results show that the Al2O3 particles are distributed more uniformly in the matrix than that by direct adding of Al2O3 particles. Hardness and wear properties have also been examined and the results show that the hardness of the composites increases with increasing volume fraction of the reinforced particles. Wear rate of the composites decreases with increasing volume fraction of the reinforced particles and increases with the applied load. The mechanical properties of the composites prepared by adding of NH4AlO(OH)HCO3 are superior and more wearable than that prepared by direct adding of Al2O3 particles. Wearing mechanism of the surfaces of the unreinforced alloy and composites is dominantly abrasive.
