Modeling Consumers’ Behavior in New Dual Banking Markets: The Case of Morocco

This paper aims to model the impact of retail consumers’ behavior on a new banking dual market featuring both conventional and Islamic banking products. To build the model, we conduct an empirical qualitative and quantitative survey on Moroccan market consumers in order to appraise their preferences with regard to banking products’ attributes. Then, we use conjoint analysis method to determine the consumers’ decision function. We run market simulations on a Multi-Agents Simulation platform and analyze the results. Our findings indicate that in new dual markets, and under a range of assumptions, it is predicted that Islamic banks will face excess liquidity while conventional banks will be exposed to liquidity shortage.

Banks and bank regulatory authorities are vital players for the stability of economy and financial system in potential way. Basel III and its related to capital’s requirement obligations have been effective useful tool for the banking system. Since, this is tough job for the bankers to maintain the liquidity for hedging the future risk but it also been expensive for bankers to keep the extra capital and become more liquid since this discourage the provision of loans but promote the credit ratings. However, it has become necessary to investigate the impact of Basel III on Islamic banking system and analyze the trade off. The study analyzes empirically on the (Financial) anomalies in term of three factors (i) Financial size (ii) Spread and (iii) Provisions for non performing financing. The study also discusses the impact of Basel III on Islamic banking performance if applicable, in context of trade off and impact on country’s economy. We can ask that Basel III framework is difficult to be consistent for conventional banks; we can also realize that either new regulation will be flexible for Islamic banks under Basel III while Islamic and Conventional banks are totally different. Further, we shall estimate if the Basel III is more or less important in Islamic banks of Pakistan than conventional banks. At the end, we shall see from theoretical framework either the impact of Basel III is important for Islamic banks if and only if Islamic banks adopt to follow Basel III regulations and analyzing the potential influence on conventional banks.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to develop an Islamic Banking Index representing the Islamic banking model and to investigate its impact on the performance of Islamic and conventional banks. This study also analyzes the impact of Islamic financial development on bank performance. Design/methodology/approach The authors collected the data from 23 countries for the period from 2010 to 2018 and developed a composite Islamic Banking Index. The authors applied the generalized method of moments on 3,542 bank-year observations for both Islamic and conventional banks to analyze the impact of the Islamic Banking Index on bank performance. The results of the study are robust to time-fixed effects, country-level time-varying factors and endogeneity issues. Findings The authors found that Islamic Banking Index positively contributes to the return on assets (ROAit) of Islamic banks only. This impact becomes highly significant in countries with comparatively higher Islamic financial development. This finding suggests that the Islamic financial development in a country provides a supportive operating environment to Islamic banks and increases their performance. The authors also found that Islamic Banking Index positively contributes to the return on equity (ROEit) of both types of banks. Practical implications The authors argue that moving away from interest-based products and focusing more on diversified portfolios can boost the performance of both types of banks without increasing their risk levels. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study that develops a composite Islamic Banking Index based on differentiating factors of the Islamic banking model and investigates the impact of Islamic Banking Index and Islamic financial development on bank performance.

Abstract According to The Act No. 21 of 2008 concerning Islamic Banking in Indonesia, the conventional banks are obligated to spun-off their Islamic business units after achieving a certain set of requirements. The spin-off requirements are: (i) reach 50% market share asset of its parents; or (ii) 15 years after the implementation of the Islamic Banking Act. This study emphasizes the impact of Islamic banks' spin-off on market share. The method used in this study is a difference in difference analysis. This technique is a quasi-experiment separate into two groups, such as the treatment groups (four spin-offs' banks) and control group (two fullfledged Islamic banks). This study used quarterly data from 2005 until 2016. The results show that, first, there is a difference in the Islamic banks' market share between pre- and post-spinoff. Second, there is a difference in the market share of spin-offs' banks between pre- and postspin- off. Third, there are there external factors that can affect the Islamic banks' market share, i.e., inflation rate, interest rate, and economic growth rate. The paper is a useful source of information that may provide relevant guidelines in helping the future development of spin-off activity in Islamic banking industry. The finding could be helpful for policymakers to create a supporting strategy to accelerate the development of Islamic banking industry. This result also could be of use for Islamic banking industries in other countries.

With the evolution of Islamic banking, the economic impact of Islamic finance has been studied by many authors. Islamic banks significantly differ from conventional banks in terms of underlying contracts. The asset side of Islamic banks is composed of different modes of financing, which can be categorized at participatory and non-participatory modes of financing. This study aims to examine the relationship of modes of Islamic financing in connection to the real economic output of Pakistan. Using quarterly data from 2005 to 2019, we use autoregressive distributive lag (ARDL) model to analyze the impact of modes of Islamic financing and industrial output. Our findings reveal that non-participatory modes of Islamic financing play a significant role in deriving a healthy aggregate economic output. Therefore, Industrial production found to have a significant positive long run relationship with non-participatory Islamic financing. However, financing modes based on partnership does not have significant impact on total industrial production. The results also show that poor asset quality hinders the production process in the long run and decreases the economic outcome.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the impact of competition in the Malaysian Islamic banking industry and the market structure of the industry by focusing on the particular impact created by the entrance of fully fledged foreign Islamic banks plus the introduction of Islamic subsidiaries of existing conventional banks in the country (domestic and foreign ownership). Design/methodology/approach Using a sample of 16 Islamic banks in the country that operated between 2008 and 2015, this paper measures the competition among the Islamic banks using the Panzar-Rosse Model and by looking at the market structure of the industry using the k-bank concentration ratio and the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index. Findings The study found that between 2008 and 2015, the Malaysian Islamic banking industry operated in monopolistic competition conditions with a moderately concentrated market structure. The introduction of foreign Islamic banks caused the market structure to become more competitive and less concentrated by comparing the results that include foreign Islamic banks against the results generated with a subsample of domestic Islamic banks only. Bank Negara Malaysia’s (BNM’s) financial reform and the liberalisation of the financial system were proven to induce competition making the financial system more resilient, competitive and dynamic. The Islamic banks have recorded consistently increased annual performance with the under-performing Islamic banks catching up on the top performers. Originality/value Very few research studies have focused on the market structure and competition of the Islamic banking industry in Malaysia, especially using recent financial data; this study will contribute to filling the existing gap.

Over the years, Islamic banking has emerged as a viable alternative to conventional banking, especially after the global financial crises of 2008. Despite the fact that the existing literature emphasizes on this significant shift in customers’ preferences in favor of Islamic banking, there are only a few studies that investigate the actual motives behind this shift. Hence, the key objective of this study is to identify the different factors that explain consumer preferences regarding Islamic banking services, specifically in Mirpur. Even more specifically, this study explores the role of religiosity in influencing consumers’ choice of Islamic banking in Mirpur. To test whether or not religiosity affects consumer preference for Islamic banking, the logistic regression technique has been used for the data analysis. The overall results reveal that besides the conventional variables, the religiosity level of customers, Shariah compliance of an Islamic bank, and knowledge of the respondent about prohibition of interest (Riba) in Islam have positive, and significant effects on consumers’ selection of Islamic banks. Based on these empirical findings, this study suggests that along with improving delivery and quality of services, Islamic banks should emphasize on Shariah compliance which provides a sustainable competitive advantage for Islamic banks over conventional banks.

This study aimed to explore the impact of Jordan’s Conventional and Islamic Banking Development Factors on Economic Growth during the period (2000-2015). A sample of four Islamic banks and eight conventional banks was tested. A group of statistical methods such as Multiple Regression, Correlation, Variance Inflation Factor (VIF), T-Test, were applied. The study found that there is significant different between the impact of Conventional and Islamic Banking Factors on RGDP attributed to Total Assets, Liquid Assets, Total Deposits and Total Facilities.In addition, Islamic banks had a much impact on Economic growth as compared to conventional banks. The study recommended the Islamic Banking Sectorto introduce a new innovative financial instruments and tools to push the economic growth forward and to increase the investment opportunity and lead to higher contribution to Economic Growth in Jordan.

The impact of COVID-19 on Islamic banking can be analysed into three possible risks, such as financing risks, impairment of assets, and tightening the profit-sharing system. Compared to conventional banks, Islamic banking is more flexible in meeting the economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Basically, the national banking system had predicted trouble due to the COVID-19 epidemic. On the other hand, Islamic banks are at an advantage with the theory of profit-sharing, thus increasing its effectiveness in dealing with crises. Islamic banks’ dominance throughout these challenging times is undoubtedly an excellent opportunity to strengthen their market share. Besides, Islamic banks can face risks, such as providing loans, deteriorating asset quality, and tightening profit sharing. Therefore, Islamic banks must understand these risks to ensure their plans during the COVID-19 pandemic. Admittedly, performing restricted expansion into the digital share is a challenging decision that should be practised by Islamic banks. In view of the recent pandemic, this study aimed to analyse the three risks faced by Islamic banking in Indonesia.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to determine the rate difference required to persuade Islamic banking customers to switch to conventional banks. Design/methodology/approach A choice-based conjoint analysis survey was administered to 300 UAE Islamic banking customers. Customer utilities for Islamic and conventional banks, products and prices were developed to test hypotheses while a market simulation estimated the impact of rate changes on choice shares. Findings Overall, Muslim customers of Islamic banks strongly preferred Islamic banks and products. However, 43 percent were willing to switch to conventional banks to obtain better rates. Indeed, the share choosing conventional banks rose from 25 percent when rates were the same to 68 percent when conventional products offered 2 percent better rates. Research limitations/implications This research requires replication and extension in appropriate contexts such as Malaysia and Indonesia. Moreover, the existence of price sensitivity tiers implies underlying benefit segments that should be studied. Practical implications As so many Islamic banking customers would switch to conventional banks for better rates, it seems that conventional banks compete with Islamic banks for most clients. Islamic banks should price accordingly. Originality/value This is the first study to quantify the loyalty of Islamic banking customers in terms of price and, consequently, the first to demonstrate the existence of price sensitivity tiers. It is also the first in this field to apply conjoint analysis and market modeling.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to ascertain whether Islamic bank profitability is driven by same forces as those driving conventional banking in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Distinguished by its principles in conformity with sharia, Islamic banking is different from conventional banking, which is likely to affect profitability. Design/methodology/approach The paper builds on a dynamic panel data model to identify the banks’ specific determinants and the macroeconomic factors influencing the profitability of a large sample of 51 Islamic banks operating in the MENA region from 1994 to 2012. The system-generalized method of moment estimators are applied. Findings The findings reveal that profitability is positively affected by banks’ cost-effectiveness, asset quality and level of capitalization. The results also indicate that non-financing activities allow Islamic banks to earn higher profits. Islamic banks perform better in environments where the gross domestic product and investment are high. There is evidence of several elements of similarities between determinants of the profitability for Islamic and conventional banks. The inflation rate, however, is negatively associated with Islamic bank profitability. Practical Implications The authors conclude that profitability determinants did not differ significantly between Islamic and conventional banks. Many factors are deemed the same in explaining the profitability of conventional as well as Islamic banks. The findings reported in the current paper might be of interest for policy makers. It is recommended to better implement non-financing activities to improve Islamic bank profitability. Originality/value Unlike the previous empirical research, this empirical investigation assesses the issue whether Islamic banks profitability is influenced by same factors as conventional model. It enriches the literature in this regard by considering the specificities of Islamic banking to identify the determinants of profitability. Moreover, this study considers a large sample (51 Islamic banks) through a different selection of countries/banks than previous studies. In addition, the period of study considers the subprime crisis insofar it ranges from 1994 to 2012. Hence, this broader study allows the authors to draw more consistent conclusions.
