Understanding the sources of sustained competitive advantage is the fundamental task of strategic management research. An interesting concept of fast strategy has emerged, which builds a firm's competitiveness from its ability to react to change more rapidly than its competitors. We approach this concept with a simulation model based on a hybrid modeling technique. The simulation model is used to test the profitability of the fast strategy concept in different business environment conditions. The theoretical finding of our study supports the fast strategy concept and shows that there are some internal and external factors that control the value of agility. The methodological finding of this work is that the hybrid modeling technique offers an interesting platform for understanding the effects of environmental dynamics in strategic and technology management research.

For today's rapidly changing business environment are characteristic changes like globalization of the market place, technological changes, increased business complexity, intensified global competition, increased customer bargaining power, new resources of competitive advantage and more. Therefore, to be successful and able to compete in this environment, companies must identify and analyze their existing position, define mission, vision, strategic goals and operate more effectively. The key to success is to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of all business processes based on measurement and management of their performance. Using performance management system companies can plan, measure and manage the performance of all company activities. Properly designed, created and implemented performance management system can then help the company achieve the desired outputs. The literature, however, states that this is not a simple task, and many companies have problems especially with implementation of these systems. Unfortunately, it is still not quite clear what factors influence successful development, implementation, usage and continuous improvement of the performance management system in companies. There is a gap in the identification of factors influencing the development, implementation, usage and continuous improvement of the performance management system, their detailed study and analysis in practice. For this reason, it is important to deal with the identification, analysis and study of internal and external factors influencing the implementation and continuous improvement of performance management system. The aim of this paper is to identify and analyze internal and external factors influencing the implementation and continuous improvement of the performance management system, which these companies use. In the questionnaire survey is particularly investigated whether managers of surveyed companies are able to identify factors influencing the implementation and continuous improvement of the performance management system. Afterwards is carried out a detailed description of selected key internal factors, and their detailed analysis including identification of the relationship of these factors to the performance management system. Data were obtained by mail questionnaire survey on a sample of large manufacturing and non-manufacturing companies operating in the Czech Republic. The research findings are evaluated within the context of the theoretical background and the conclusions of similar studies.

AbstractThe aim of the paper is to assess the current state, problems and prospects for the development of foreign trade in the Republic of Belarus in the international business environment. The evaluation of foreign trade indicators is based on information from different sources and on comparative economic analysis research methods. Our results indicate the export-oriented economy of the Republic of Belarus, and its dependence on the state of foreign markets and the international business environment. The identified problems in the development of Belarusian merchandise exports are due to the orientation towards primary products, and to poor diversification of products and geographical destination. Particular attention is paid to the internal and external factors restraining exports from the Republic of Belarus. Further development requires the full use of the Belarusian export potential and the implementation of measures to promptly resolve the export difficulties on international markets that stem from internal and external factors.

This study investigates the relationships between industry-specific institutions, industry structure, and industry performance. The Norwegian Pelagic value chain’s harvesting industry and its processing industry comprised the empirical context. The study findings reveal that the harvesters (the fishers), on average, achieved nearly twice the return on assets relative to the processors. Furthermore, the fishers’ cash flow margin was, on average, more than eight times higher, and their annual growth rate was approximately 70% above the corresponding figures of the processing industry. This study argues that the two industries’ performance differences are related to the variations in their institutional setups. The processing industry is subject to the general Norwegian business environment, whereas the fish harvesting industry benefits from a sector-specific framework that supports its relative competitiveness. The fishers have collectively established a legally supported sales organization, thereby strengthening their bargaining power, vis-à-vis the processors (buyers). The fishers’ rivalry is curbed by catch share regulations, and incumbent fishers are protected from intruders through entry barriers, for example, license requirements. Moreover, the processing industry’s potential threat to vertically integrate upstream into the fish harvesting industry is blocked through legislation. Finally, in contrast to the processing industry, the fish input cost is free for the harvesting industry. This study concludes that the fish harvesting industry has gained a sustained competitive advantage over the processing industry, based on a more supportive industry-specific institutional framework.
