Most psychology departments offer field placements that allow undergraduates to learn practical skills and test career options. The psychology curriculum should encourage community service placements because they are consistent with psychology's values, good for students, and beneficial to the community. To close the acknowledged gap between good intentions and volunteer action, our department has developed two models of community service: elementary school tutoring within a child psychology course and credit for individual placements in a variety of settings. We describe procedures followed, decisions made, and lessons learned in setting up these courses. Student testimony about the value of these experiences is offered. Encouraging volunteerism is well worth the effort of psychology departments.

Abstract Emotion regulation is a multiprocessual phenomenon capable of maintaining, intensifying or diminishing the emotional experience. This work investigated the psychometric properties of the Emotion Regulation Inventory for Learning Situations, using the Item Response Theory (IRT). Participants included 365 students from the 5th to the 9th grades of elementary school, with a mean age of 11.9 years (SD = 1.72), 57.5% female and 42.5% male. The results indicated problems in the instrument, such as small variability of the items and underutilized categories of response, and ways for the revision of the instrument, such as construction of more difficult items that require internal strategies, focused on the learning experience.

Bring together a university landscape horticulture professor who believes in school gardens, a landscape design class, a landscape construction class, enthusiastic elementary school teachers and a willing principal, and you can create wonderful teaching gardens. The interactions among university students, elementary teachers, and students were a true learning experience for everyone. University students were involved in a true problem-solving project, being forced to look at problems and solutions through the eyes of elementary school children. Their expertise was valued as they were asked to explain horticulture to first and second graders. For some, this was the first time they really understood some of the concepts. Teachers and students were active participants throughout the process. Sharing thoughts and ideas was dynamic throughout the design and construction. Ways to initiate and maintain university–school partnerships will be presented.

Early school years are an important period to lay out the foundation for learning a second language. In addition to mastering the basic language skills and keeping the learning process fun, promoting a lifelong learning habit should also be emphasised. Motivating elementary school students to learn English and avoiding misconceptions associated with the learning process are very important issues. This study attempted to explore the integration of book, computer and robot to create a novel and joyful English learning environment. Books are the most common learning media. If we can design a special mechanism linking books with digital learning content and a robot, students will be able to obtain supplementary learning content including motions performed by the robot to enhance learning outcomes. To implement this idea, a new learning system was designed and developed. Learning activities included vocabulary, single sentence read-along, full article read-along, conversation, sing-along and dancing. Cloze tests were implemented and the feasibility of the learning system was evaluated. Data collected from field observation and interviews were analysed. The results suggest that this system did enrich students' learning experience and enhance their motivation and engagement.
