Physiology teaching resources have advanced to include innovative pedagogical approaches that meet the learning expectations of the current generation of students, while at the same time ensuring content delivery is accurate and the use of technologies is appropriate. We developed a quick experimental assay protocol to introduce the basic concepts of cardiac rhythms, and to demonstrate simultaneously that smartphone applications are a reliable and cost-effective tool for data collection in teaching the scientific method and performing physiology activities. The cardiac rhythm dance (CRD) protocol engages students in dancing a cardiac cyclelike movement to the rhythm of classical, pop, and samba music, and measuring their own cardiac frequency. Students collected their own data using the app Instant Heart Rate (Azumio). The CRD protocol allowed students to conclude that cardiac cycle-like movements paced by a pop song could represent the normal cardiac rhythm, whereas a classical song induced a significant reduction of heart rate, and the samba song significantly increased heart rate compared with the pop song. After group discussion, students considered that the pop rhythm is more realistic of day-by-day movement rhythms and is equivalent to the steady state of daily cardiac rhythms. Students considered the bradycardic and tachycardic movements to the dancing performed to the classical and samba rhythms, respectively. Thus the CRD protocol provides a multiple sensory-based and active learning resource that can engage students in learning cardiovascular physiology and recognizes smartphones as scientific instruments for collecting data during hands-on activities.

Abstract: Software Engineering has grown and developed from the 1960’s till now a lot as our knowledge and understanding of software is increasing day-by-day due to which software is becoming increasingly reliable and cost effective. Previous research was not able to express clearly how software engineering transitioned, how new technologies and services for software came to be known and were started using in the world of software engineering, decade or year wise. I use data from different websites and research papers to tell how software engineering has evolved along with the years with details about what happened in particular years, with respect to the corresponding decades. There are also details about manifestos and the developers of computer languages. The findings indicate that the software engineering field is vast and is still far from being fully developed, in a world where we have hands on every technology possible and hence new software’s and services are coming out on a regular basis now.

The study aimed to develop culture-based lessons in Biology 9, integrating indigenous medicinal plants and practices in Cagraray Island. These developed lessons were designed incorporating features of research results, problem-based approach, active learning, and culture- or context-based teaching. The accounts from eight folk healers revealed the abundance of indigenous medicinal plants and practices for treating wounds, hypertension, anemia, cough and colds, and asthma. These illnesses were used as springboard for the development of five culture-based lessons with entry points in the K - 12 curriculum. Implemented to 45 Grade 9 learners for five consecutive days at Cawayan National High School, the culture-based lessons were found effective in developing learning outcomes like conceptual understanding, metacognition, science process skills, and cultural appreciation using quantitative data analysis ( p < .05). Qualitative data also supported these findings through Focus-Group Discussion (FGD), journal entries, interviews, and observations. Educational philosophy for culture-based learning revealed the need to incorporate hands-on activities producing concrete evidences for culture-based learning. In general, the study concluded with the potentiality of using indigenous medicine as resources for culture-based lessons in biology. For further study, it is recommended to design and develop more studies about local medicinal plants so they can be integrated, as well as multiple cultural facets, to culture-based lessons.

Abstract Objective: We sought to produce the first meta-analysis (of medical trainee competency improvement in nutrition counseling) informing the first cohort study of patient diet improvement through medical trainees and providers counseling patients on nutrition. Design: (Part A) A systematic review and meta-analysis informing (Part B) the intervention analyzed in the world’s largest prospective multi-center cohort study on hands-on cooking and nutrition education for medical trainees, providers, and patients. Settings: (A) Medical educational institutions. (B) Teaching kitchens. Participants: (A) Medical trainees. (B) Trainees, providers, and patients. Results: (A) Of the 212 citations identified (N=1,698 trainees), 11 studies met inclusion criteria. The overall effect size was 9.80 (95%CI 7.15-12.456.87-13.85; p<0.001), comparable to the machine learning (ML)-augmented results. The number needed to treat for the top performing high quality study was 12. (B) The hands-on cooking and nutrition education curriculum from the top performing study was applied for medical trainees and providers who subsequently taught patients in the same curriculum (N=5,847). The intervention compared to standard medical care and education alone significantly increased the odds of superior diets (high/medium versus low Mediterranean diet adherence) for residents/fellows most (OR 10.79, 95%CI 4.94-23.58; p<0.001) followed by students (OR 9.62, 95%CI 5.92-15.63; p<0.001), providers (OR 5.19, 95%CI 3.23-8.32, p<0.001), and patients (OR 2.48, 95%CI 1.38-4.45; p=0.002), results consistent with those from ML. Conclusions: This study suggests that medical trainees and providers can improve patients’ diets with nutrition counseling in a manner that is clinically and cost effective and may simultaneously advance societal equity.

During previous research into drinking water quality in Peru, it was found that water was becoming contaminated in households, and there was a lack of understanding surrounding this contamination. It was felt that returning these findings to the community could build capacity, enabling people to make more informed choices about drinking water practices. Several participatory methods were explored. Ketso®, a hands-on kit for engagement, was thought to provide the most appropriate approach, and was used to deliver several workshops in the community. Thirty-five participants explored their understanding of drinking water and factors that caused contamination. The method allowed them to explore these factors in depth and to develop several practical and simple solutions. One solution capitalized on a novel finding; participants associated the taste of chlorine with clean water, but were unaware that household bleach could be used as a cost-effective water treatment. Feedback was excellent, with Ketso seen as giving participants space to better understand and question their practices, whilst building capacity for change. This co-production of knowledge also allowed the researcher to gain a better understanding of local knowledge and perceptions. Such innovative knowledge exchange has important implications for future implementation of new water technologies and engineering projects.


Attendance taking and maintaining is a tedious job in the academic institutions where the time of class is restricted. The manual attendance i.e., roll call or paper-based signature systems usually consumes more time and error prone and also possibility of recording proxy attendance is more. Attendance is one of the criteria in considering students’ eligibility for attending the external examinations and also for the promotion to the next semester / year, where these kinds of problems may cause severe effect on the academic institutions. As the strength of students in a class is increasing day by day; monitoring, awarding and maintenance of attendance has becoming a challenge for the academic institutions. As a solution, attendance can be recorded using anyone of the existing biometric techniques like fingerprinting, iris recognition, signature, face recognition etc. Face identification is the best method among all the earlier mentioned methods for implementing in the academic institutions as it does not require human intervention and it is a cost-effective technique. A novel student attendance recording and management system using a MATLAB application, LabVIEW, Camera interface and GSM is proposed in this paper. Students’ faces will be captured with the help of a camera connected to a computer and Eigen values of the captured images will be detected with the help of MATLAB executed by LabVIEW Mathscript node. LabVIEW, a graphical programming environment is adopted for acquiring face, processing and authenticating the student once the match is found. Authenticated student attendance will be updated, and a message will be sent with the help of GSM module interface to myRIO. Proposed system replaces the manual attendance system which improves the performance of existing system.

<p>Mobility is one of the most challenging fundamentals of rural livelihood in the Himalayan hills and mountains. More than 8500 trail bridges, comprising an overall span-length of about 650 kilometers have been constructed to date, saving millions of walking hours for people living in the rural Himalayan areas. Previously, crossing rivers was dangerous and sometimes impossible, especially in the rainy season. These bridges created vital connections which enabled children to go to school and people to access public services and visit medical centers and sanctuaries. They also boost local economic output by reducing the effort required to run local farms, gather crops and visit regional markets.</p><p>Fig. 1:The struggles and dangers of crossing a river and its solution</p><p>Swiss technical assistance for rural trail bridges started in the early sixties with the construction of a few suspension bridges in the hill areas of Nepal. In 1964 the Nepalese Government established the Suspension Bridge Division (SBD), and starting in 1972 the Swiss Government began providing continuous technical and financial assistance. Similarly, the Public Works Department in Bhutan initiated a country wide trail bridge construction program in 1971 for which assistance was provided from 1985-2010. Exchanges of experiences between these programs created a collaborative environment where new ideas could be evaluated and tested in the field. After SBD initially developed the basic technical norms, design parameters and standard designs suitable for long-span bridges, demand for simpler shorter span bridges rose tremendously. This prompted the program to develop “community executable bridge designs” adapted to the local skills and materials while conforming to established engineering standards. As a result, cost-effective, easy to implement technologies and community-based approaches were developed, which have been replicated in numerous countries leading to multiple successful partnerships in international development cooperation.</p><p>The purpose of this paper is to highlight the following outcomes of the trail bridge-program:</p><ul><li><p>Standardized cost-effective trail bridge designs based on local capabilities and bridge-building techniques</p></li><li><p>Published of manuals, technical drawings and teaching resources for design, construction and fabrication</p></li><li><p>Engaged local communities in the construction, operation and maintenance of trail bridges</p></li><li><p>Compiled comprehensive trail bridge directory for planning, monitoring and maintenance</p></li><li><p>Established Sector Wide Approach (SWAp) with institutional frameworks at national and local level</p></li><li><p>‘South-South Cooperation’ with Bhutan, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Laos, Burundi, Honduras, Guatemala</p></li></ul>

Background: The hallmark of Long QT Syndrome (LQTS) is a prolongation of the ventricular electrical action potential caused by mutations involving key cardiac ion channels on the surface membrane of ventricular myocytes. Different mutations are associated with specific modes of arrhythmia initiation and distinct changes in cardiac rhythm prior to these events. We hypothesized that some LQTS-causing mutations might involve the sinus node, leading to aberrations in cardiac rhythm. To test this hypothesis, we examined the features of cardiac rhythm in 23 genotyped patients with LQTS and 14 matched controls (C) using Holter ECG data (6hrs). Methods: QRS-complexes were identified using custom software and verified by an experienced ECG reader; series of sinus beats were extracted and gaps in time series were linearly interpolated. The mean, max, and min heart rate (HR), the time (SD, SDNN, SDANN, RMSSD, pNN50) and frequency-domain (Total (TP), Very low (VLF), Low (LF), High (HF) frequency powers, and LF/HF) indices of heart rate variability (HRV) were calculated in each 5-min interval and over the entire recording. The short-long-short irregularity was examined using the novel multiscale rhythmogenetic analysis (MRA), which quantifies changes in the HRV indices during the transition from one time-scale window to another. Results: The maximum heart rate was slower in LQTS than in C (101±13 and 119±19bpm, p=0.001). The high-frequency power (HF) was lower in LQTS than in C (80±76 and 113±58ms 2 , p<0.05). However, the short-term irregularity (quantified by the difference in RMSSD between the 75ms and 2000ms time scales) was 4 times greater in LQTS compared to C (p=0.003). Inclusion or exclusion of two patents who were on β-blockers did not change the results. Conclusions: LQTS is associated with specific changes in cardiac rhythm, including: diminished acceleration capacity, decreased high-frequency power, and enhanced short-long-short irregularity. This suggests that LQTS involves channel modifications in the sinus node, which might contribute to arrhythmogenesis. Rhythm characterization in genetic sub-types of LQTS might improve arrhythmia risk stratification in this heterogeneous patient population.

Cardiac comorbidities are oftentimes not limited to a single diagnosis, and multiple cardiac abnormalities may have to be considered when administering an appropriate anesthetic. Atrial fibrillation is an abnormal cardiac rhythm with uncoordinated depolarization of the atria causing an irregularly irregular ventricular response. Optimization requires heart rate control as well as anticoagulation, which must be considered prior to any surgical procedure. Percutaneous coronary intervention or coronary stents are placed in the coronary arteries in the face of coronary artery stenosis. The circumstances of when the stents were placed, as well as the type of stents that were used, will determine how long dual antiplatelet therapy must be undertaken and when elective surgery can take place.
