Introduction. Clinical observation of larger prostate glands in men with diabetes mellitus type 2 led some investigators to hypothesize that an association between these two conditions exists. In fact, both diseases are very common in men as they age and seem to be sharing similar epidemiologic features. Several studies examining the above hypothesis were yielded.Aim. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the existing literature focusing on the coexistence of BPH and diabetes mellitus type 2 and to elucidate whether or not an association among these conditions exists.Methods. We identified studies published from 1990 onwards by searching the MEDLINE database of the National Library of Medicine. Initial search terms werebenign prostatic hyperplasia, epidemiology, andrisk factor, combined withdiet hyperinsulinemia, and diabetes mellitus type 2.Results. Diabetes mellitus type 2 and hyperinsulinemia are quite common conditions and often coexist with BPH. There are several studies (observational, epidemiological, and experimental) examining the association between them in literature.Conclusion. Evidence suggests that an association between BPH and diabetes through a common pathogenic mechanism is possible. The specific pathway interfering in the development of both conditions is still poorly investigated; thus, the exact relationship of BPH to diabetes remains unclear.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is one of the most common chronic health conditions around the world and is a major challenge to health care providers. Its incidence across the world is increasing. There is long-term affection of pancreas before symptoms start, allowing for a large window for early detection and prevention of the disease. We conducted this review using a comprehensive search of MEDLINE, PubMed, and EMBASE, January 1987, through March 2017. The following search terms were used: diabetes type 2, prevention diabetes type 2, effects of lifestyle on health, alcohol and diabetes, smoking and diabetes, preventive strategies for diabetes type 2. Our aim in this study is to understand the pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus type 2 with regards to the risk factors and how to prevent them. Diabetes mellitus type 2 is considered a preventable disease, therefore, studying its risk factors and trying to reduce them is very important. Even minor modifications in risk factors of the disease could achieve significant reduction in incidence and progression of diabetes. Weight loss, improved dietary intake, and increased exercise levels are the most important interventions that will lead to significant decrease in the occurrence of the disease.

AbstractDiabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2), the most prevalent type in the population, can interfere with habits and routines present in the life of a subject and consequently can lead to changes in the occupational roles. Assessing and intervening in the occupational roles of individuals is part of the field of Occupational Therapy. Objective: To analyze the academic production on the impact on the occupational roles of people with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Methodology: This work is an integrative bibliographical review of the literature, carried out in the PUBMED database. Three categories were established for analysis: Understanding the context of the patient with Type 2 Diabetes; Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Occupational Roles; and Network Support. Results: Nine articles were selected for analysis, of which one was related to the occupational therapeutic process. The others referred to the impact on occupational roles indirectly. No studies were found that used the Role Checklist to verify which roles were modified after diagnosis. Discussion: It was noticed that the context of the individual with DM2 after the diagnosis undergoes changes that impact the habits and routine. The occupational roles identified were: directly, Family Member and Worker; and indirectly, Caregiver and Friend. Conclusion: The occupational roles can be altered in individuals with DM2. In this direction, it is expected that this review will motivate new studies that make use of the Role Checklist with individuals with DM2 to approach this issue in a direct way. Keywords: Role Performance; Diabetes Mellitus Type 2; Role Checklist; Occupational Roles; Occupational Therapy. ResumenLa Diabetes Mellitus tipo 2 (DM2), el tipo más prevalente en la población, puede interferir en hábitos y rutinas presentes en la vida de un sujeto y consecuentemente puede acarrear cambios en los papeles ocupacionales. The diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of patients with chronic pancreatitis (CP) with concomitant diabetes mellitus (DM), whose incidence is increasing. The objective: was to investigate the state of functional capacity of the pancreas in patients with comorbidity of chronic pancreatitis and diabetes type 2. Materials and methods. 137 patients with CP with and without concomitant diabetes mellitus were studied: the main group consisted of 112 outpatients with CP in combination with diabetes mellitus in the phase of stable or unstable remission, the comparison group – 25 patients with isolated CP, and the control group – 30 healthy individuals. Verification of diagnoses and determination of the pancreas functional capacity parameters was carried out according to generally accepted world standards. Results. In comorbidity, exocrine insufficiency (ExI) was significantly more severe than in the group of patients with isolated CP in the content of fecal α-elastase, which corresponded to the medium and mild degrees of ExI respectively, and the coprogram score – respectively (5,60±0,10) and (3,89±0,16) points (p<0,05). We found a significant predominance of patients with comorbidity relative to that with an isolated course of CP among those who had mild (22,6 % vs. 11,7 %) and moderate (50,1 % vs. 3,7 %) degree of ExI in the complete absence of severe pancreas ExI in isolated CP against 5.1 % of such patients with CP and diabetes mellitus type 2. A statistically significant higher content of HbA1c in patients with CP with concomitant diabetes was found in relation to the group of patients with isolated CP (7,71±0,16 % vs. (5,66±0,10 %), glucose – respectively (28,89±0,33 mmol/l against 5,27±0,11 mmol/l), the level of the HOMA index – 3,29±0,07 against 1,63±0,09 (p<0,05), which confirmed the presence of IR in patients with pancreas endocrine insufficiency in the cohort of subjects, and also proved that these patients have diabetes type 2. Evaluation of the ultrasound score of the structure of the software proved that in comorbidity with diabetes mellitus, this figure is higher and corresponds to a severe degree, while in isolated CP of the studied patients – the average severity (6,25±0,67) points against (3,89±0,78) points. Conclusion. The distribution by index and severity of patients acording M-ANNHEIM in points statistically significantly proved that the comorbidity of CP and diabetes mellitus was dominated by patients with moderate (72,2 % vs. 24,0 %) and severe CP severity (17,0 % against 8,0 %), and in isolated CP – dominated by patients with moderate severity (64,0 % vs. 4,5 %), patients with severe were more in the group of comorbid patients (6,3 % vs. 4,0 %).
