In order to obtain the influence of blade placement angle on the performance of plastic centrifugal pumps, this article used the velocity modulus method. Based on the method, the hydraulic design of the flow passage components of the plastic centrifugal pump was carried out, and the two-dimensional model and three-dimensional model diagram of the flow components were established. The flow field of the impeller model under different working conditions was simulated and the results were analyzed by ANSYS CFX. The influence of different fluid loads on the solid structure under design conditions on the structure characteristics of the impeller was studied by ANSYS Workbench. Impeller models with different outlet angles were established to study the influence of the outlet angle on the performance of pump, and fluid-structure interaction for different impeller models was utilized to study the influence of the outlet angle on the structural characteristics of the impeller. According to the Stepanoff velocity modulus method, considered the import prerotation, the wrap angle design method and the blade inlet angle design method were proposed. In order to study the influence of different inlet angles on the performance of pump, the inlet angle was changed to establish multiple sets of impeller models, 3D printing technology was used to print out each impeller, and performance experiments were performed on the pump equipped with the impeller. The result of the experiments showed that working pressure of plastic centrifugal pump exceeding 5 atm would cause impeller structure damage. When the outlet angle was 35°, the plastic centrifugal pump reached the highest efficiency of 81.0161% and the highest H of 35.8029. The maximum deformation caused by the flow field load on the impeller increased with the increase of the outlet angle. With the increase of the inlet angle, the efficiency and H of the plastic centrifugal pump were reduced. Under normal pressure load, the deformation of the impeller first decreased and then increased, and when β1 was 13°, the total deformation of the impeller was the smallest.

AbstractCavitation is a phenomenon that occurs easily during rotation of fluid machinery and can decrease the performance of a pump, thereby resulting in damage to flow passage components. To study the influence of wall roughness on the cavitation performance of a centrifugal pump, a three-dimensional model of internal flow field of a centrifugal pump was constructed and a numerical simulation of cavitation in the flow field was conducted with ANSYS CFX software based on the Reynolds normalization group k-epsilon turbulence model and Zwart cavitation model. The cavitation can be further divided into four stages: cavitation inception, cavitation development, critical cavitation, and fracture cavitation. Influencing laws of wall roughness of the blade surface on the cavitation performance of a centrifugal pump were analyzed. Research results demonstrate that in the design process of centrifugal pumps, decreasing the wall roughness appropriately during the cavitation development and critical cavitation is important to effectively improve the cavitation performance of pumps. Moreover, a number of nucleation sites on the blade surface increase with the increase in wall roughness, thereby expanding the low-pressure area of the blade. Research conclusions can provide theoretical references to improve cavitation performance and optimize the structural design of the pump.

The strong noise generated during the operation of the centrifugal pump harms the pump group and people. In order to decrease the noise of the centrifugal pump, a specific speed of 117.3 of the centrifugal pump is chosen as a research object. The bionic modification of centrifugal pump blades is carried out to explore the influence of different bionic structures on the noise reduction performance of centrifugal pumps. The internal flow field and internal sound field of bionic blades are studied by numerical calculation and test methods. The test is carried out on a closed pump test platform which includes external characteristics and a flow noise test system. The effects of two different bionic structures on the external characteristics, acoustic amplitude–frequency characteristics and flow field structure of a centrifugal pump, are analyzed. The results show that the pit structure has little influence on the external characteristic parameters, while the sawtooth structure has a relatively great influence. The noise reduction effect of the pit structure is aimed at the wide-band noise, while the sawtooth structure is aimed at the discrete noise of the blade-passing frequency (BPF) and its frequency doubling. The noise reduction ability of the sawtooth structure is not suitable for high-frequency bands.

The backflow vortexes at the suction connection in high-speed centrifugal pumps have negative effect on the flow field. Setting an orifice plate in front of the inducer is able to decrease the negative effect caused by backflow vortexes. The traditional plate is able to partially control the backflow vortexes, but a small part of the vortex is still in the inlet and the inducer. Four new types of orifice plates were created, and the control effects on backflow vortexes were analyzed. The ANSYS-CFX software was used to numerically simulate a high-speed centrifugal pump. The variations of streamline and velocity vectors at the suction connection were analyzed. Meanwhile, the effects of these plates on the impeller pressure and the internal flow field of the inducer were analyzed. Numerically, simulation and experimental data analysis methods were used to compare the head and efficiency of the high-speed pumps. The results show that the C-type orifice plate can improve the backflow vortex, reduce the low-pressure area, and improve the hydraulic performance of the high-speed pump.

Aero-fuel centrifugal pumps are important power plants in aero-engines. Unlike most of the existing centrifugal pumps, a combination impeller is integrated with the pump to improve performance. First, the critical geometrical parameters of the combination impeller and volute are given. Then, the effects of the combination impeller on the flow characteristics of the impeller and volute are clarified by comparing simulation results with that of the conventional impeller, where the effectiveness of the selected numerical method is validated by an acceptable agreement between simulation and experiment. Finally, the experiment is set to test the external performance of the studied pump. A significant feature of this study is that the flow characteristics are significantly ameliorated by reducing the flow losses that emerged in the impeller inlet, impeller outlet, and volute tongue. Correspondingly, the head and efficiency of a combination impeller are higher with comparison to a conventional impeller. Consequently, it is a promising approach in ameliorating the flow field and improving external performance by applying a combination impeller to an aero-fuel centrifugal pump.

The research on a centrifugal pump of low specific speed with splitter blades was carried out in recent years by our group, is systematically introduced in this paper. The design method is summarized also. At the beginning, based on the former L9(34) orthogonal test, Particle Imagine Velocity (PIV) tests and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations were carried out for several designs with different splitter blade length. Results show that for an impeller with splitter blades the “jet-wake” flow at the impeller outlet is improved, and the velocity distribution inside the impeller is more uniform. This explains that the impeller with splitter blades shows higher performance (especially in head and efficiency). Meanwhile, the numerical simulation results were compared with the test results, which confirm that, CFD technology can be used to observe inner flow distribution and forecast pump performance tendency. Later, a further L9(34) orthogonal test, which adopt the blade number as a new variable, was designed to explore the relationship between geometry parameters of splitter blade and pump performance, and corresponding CFD simulations for the flow field with volute were also done. From the test results the influence of the main design parameters on the hydraulic performance of a centrifugal pump and its reasonable value range are determined. The simulations forecasted pump performance show good consistency with that from tests at the rated point, and the simulated error at other flow rates were analyzed. Thirdly, in order to save research cost, numerical simulations were done for the full flow field including the cavity inside the volute and impeller. By analyzing the distribution law of blade torque and turbulent kinetic energy in the impeller, the value fetching principle for the splitter blade inlet diameter is presented as “the splitter blades torque should be positive”, and by analyzing the distribution of blades loading, the flow distribution rules and pump performance influenced by different splitter blades off-setting angles and inlet diameters were discovered. The disk friction loss, which consuming much energy in centrifugal pumps, was also forecasted at various operating conditions. The results were compared with that from empirical formulas, which show great accordance at the rated point, and the forecasted results at off-design points were analyzed also. Finally, the research results and the design method for the centrifugal pump with splitter blades, such as how to select splitter blade number, the off-setting angle, the inlet diameter and the deflection angle, were summarized.

Abstract In order to improve suction performance, centrifugal pumps with an inducer are used for rocket pumps, liquid gas transport such as LNG, and general-purpose pumps. Since a higher suction performance than conventional pump is required, a splitter blade that consists of a long blade and a short blade is sometimes adopted. However, the design becomes more difficult due to the increased number of parameters. The stable operation over a wide flow rate range are required in the general-purpose pumps. Therefore it is necessary to design them so that unstable flow phenomena such as surges do not occur. However, the design method to avoid them is not well understood yet. In this study, we focused on the splitter blade impeller in a general-purpose low-speed centrifugal pump with an inducer. Six parameters such as leading edge position and trailing edge position of the short blade for both hub-side and tip-side were set as design ones. A multi-objective optimization method using a commercial software was applied to improve suction performance while maintaining high efficiency. Then obtained optimal shape were analyzed by CFD calculation and extracted the feature. Furthermore, optimized impellers were manufactured and confirmed the performance over a wide flow rate range by experiments. In addition, a optimizing design method that improves pump performance at lower cost was studied.

In this paper, the flow in the impeller sidewall gap of a low specific speed centrifugal pump is analyzed to study the effect of wear ring clearance and the resultant through-flow on flow field in this cavity and investigate the overall efficiency of the pump. Centrifugal pumps are commonly subject to a reduction in the flow rate and volumetric efficiency due to abrasive liquids or working conditions, since the wear rings are progressively worn, the internal leakage flow is increased. In the new operating point, the overall efficiency of the pump cannot be predicted simply by using the pump characteristic curves. The flow field is simulated with the use of computational fluid dynamics and the three-dimensional full Navier–Stokes equations are solved using CFX software. In order to verify the numerical simulations, static pressure field in volute casing and pump performance curves are compared with the experimental measurements. The results show that, for the pump with minimum wear ring clearance, the disk friction efficiency is the strongest factor that impairs the overall efficiency. Therefore, when the ring clearance is enlarged more than three times, although volumetric efficiency decreases effectively but the reduction in overall efficiency is remarkably smaller due to improvement in the disk friction losses.

In order to research the effects of impeller outlet angles on flow induced vibration and noise of centrifugal pumps, a single grade end suction centrifugal pump is employed as a research object. The outlet angles were varied from 33° to 29°and 37°, but the volute and the other geometric parameters keep constant. Based on the virtual instrument data acquisition system, pump product testing system and in the centrifugal pump closed experimental rig, the flow induced vibration and noise signals of model pump with different outlet angles in the full flow range are measured and analyzed. Experimental results show that the influence of flow induced vibration on volute is the largest. With the increase of impeller outlet angle, the variation tendency of vibration intensity for 4 measure points decrease. The vibration intensity of model pump gets the minimum value, when the outlet angle is 37°. Under different conditions, the shaft frequency peak of noise signal varied intricately with the increase of impeller outlet angle. When the outlet angle is 33°, the shaft frequency peak of the model pump is relatively small under each operating condition, and gets the minimum value at the design condition.

The double-channel centrifugal pumps are widely used to transport the two-phase flow including big solid particles in industry and agriculture. However, the related design theory and the design method are immature by far. In practice, the revised design method based on the pure water medium is still the main method for the solid-liquid twophase double-channel pump. Therefore, it is very necessary to deeply study the flow characteristics on the condition of the pure water medium. In this paper, in order to study the flow characteristics inside a prototype double-channel centrifugal pump in the case that the delivered medium is the pure water, the SIMPLE algorithm, RNG κ-ε turbulence model, and frozen rotor method are employed to calculate the incompressible, viscous, three-dimensional internal flow. The calculation results display the variation characteristics of the internal flow field and the external performance. The results show that the predicted pump head drops with the increasing flow rate, which manifest that the pump model is of good operation stability at the whole range of working. At the design point, a strong and large vortex remain appears at the middle section of the double-channel impeller. The computational fluids dynamic technology is competent to assess the internal viscous flow inside a double-channel centrifugal pump.
