An abnormal serum uric acid (SUA) level is associated with many diseases. To our knowledge, there is no research on the association between SUA and intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD). The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between SUA and IDD. From June 2011 to July 2020, 691 patients undergoing surgery for lumbar disc herniation (LDH) were included in the LDH group, and 684 patients who underwent endoscopic surgery for knee trauma were included in the non-LDH group. We examined the baseline characteristics of all these patients and divided the SUA level into 10 groups according to the percentiles in males, females, and the total population. Subsequently, the relationship between the SUA level and IDD was further analyzed. There was no statistically significant difference in the baseline characteristics of the two groups ( p > 0.05 ). Among the 10 groups, the LDH rate was higher at both lower and higher SUA levels. In multiple logistic regression analysis, after adjustment for age, sex, body mass index, smoking, and drinking, when the SUA level was <20% or >80%, compared with 60–80%, the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of LDH of the total population were 1.821 (1.125–2.946) and 1.701 (1.186–2.438), respectively, and in the males, they were 1.922 (1.169–3.161) and 2.800 (1.766, 4.439), respectively. In females, when the SUA was <20%, there was a higher LDH rate ( OR = 1.951 , 95% CI 1.091-3.486). The present study suggests that there is a U-shaped relationship between SUA and IDD, being particularly prominent among male. Lower and higher SUA level may be risk factors for IDD.

Background. Studies on serum uric acid (sUA) levels and hypertension (HTN) are controversial. To investigate the association between the sUA level and the incident of HTN in middle-aged and elderly adults, we performed this study. Methods. 6399 participants aged ≥40 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were included. Weighted multiple logistic regression analysis was carried out to evaluate the relationship between the sUA level and the incident of HTN, exploring the potential nonlinear relationship using the fitted smoothing curves. If nonlinearity was observed, the inflection point was further calculated by a recursive algorithm. Results. A positive relationship between the sUA level and the incident of HTN was found. However, it may differ in different race groups, nor between male and female. Moreover, the association between the sUA level and the incident of HTN followed a U-shaped curve in male (turning point: sUA 4.1 mg/dL) and Whites (turning point: sUA 7.9 mg/dL). Conclusions. The results revealed that the sUA level is positively correlated with the incident of HTN, in middle-aged and elderly adults. However, it followed a U-shaped curve in males and Whites.

Abstract The relationship between Uric acid (UA) and malignant tumor are still confusing. Gastric cancer(GC) is recognized to be closely related to Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, early diagnosis rate is very low. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between H. pylori and hyperuricemia (HUA), and evaluate the predictive value of serum uric acid (SUA) in gastric precancerous lesion (GPL) and gastric cancer (GC). This retrospective study included 486 patients who underwent gastroscopy (155 controls, 272 GPL, 59 GC patients). The risk factors for GPL and GC were identified by multiple logistic regression analysis and nomogram was constructed to evaluate the ability of SUA to predict the risk of these diseases based on SUA score. We found that in healthy controls, HUA is positively correlated with H. Pylori (+). SUA was an independent risk factor for GPL and GC. Verification shows that the nomogram was better fitted for GC than for GPL. In conclusion, our study established nomogram based on SUA to predict the risk of GPL and GC, suggested that the incidence of GPL and GC is higher in H. pylori (+) HUA patients, so early intervention and vigilance should be raised.

The advantage and value of magnetic resonance (MR)-ultra-short echo time (UTE) technique in the displaying the structures of degenerative intervertebral discs were observed through evaluating the lumbar disc degeneration in the axial plane by conventional MR image and MR-UTE technique. A total of 160 examinees screened by inclusion and exclusion criteria were enrolled, and a total of 800 intervertebral disks were involved, and the degree of intervertebral disc degeneration was classified by conventional MR image classification method. After the first echo image of MR-UTE technique was integrated with the contour, the image entered UTE cartilage endplate, fibrous ring and osseous endplate. The integrity of the intervertebral disc from the above and below the intervertebral disc and the correlation of the structural endplate with the integrities of cartilage endplate, fibrous ring and osseous endplate under double echo sequence were analyzed, and the correlation analysis of the two categorical variables was conducted using rank correlation analysis. Under the MR-UTE sequence, there was no statistical significant difference in structural integrity constituent ratio (intact structure only on one side, incomplete structure on both side) between the non-low back pain group and the low back pain group (P > 0.05), the proportion of complete structure disappearance was lowest, and the proportion of partial structure disappearance was highest; there was a significant difference in the structural integrity of fibrous ring between the non-low back pain group and the low back pain group (P < 0.05), there was a statistical significant difference in structural integrity of fibrous rings between the two groups (P < 0.05); there was a statistical significant difference in pain degree between the partial structure disappearance group and the complete structure disappearance group (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in pain degree between the groups (intact structure only on one side and incomplete structure on both side); conventional MR images showed no significant difference in the intervertebral disc degeneration degree between the non-low back pain group and low back pain group (P > 0.05), and the intervertebral disc degeneration degree had no significant correlation with the lower back pain. MR-UTE sequence and T2WI sequence showed that there was a correlation between different intervertebral disc degeneration degrees and the structural integrity distributions of cartilage endplate, osseous endplate and fibrous rings in two groups of patients with or without low back pain (P < 0.05). Whether low back pain exists or not has little effect on the intervertebral disc degeneration degree on T2WI. MR-UTE double echo sequence scan reveals that the intervertebral disc degeneration degree is positively related to the integrity and integrity distribution of cartilage endplate, fibrous ring and bone endplate.

Background: Stroke or cerebrovascular accident (CVA) is noted as the second cause of mortality, especially in the elderly population. Recent studies indicated that higher concentrations of uric acid are involved in various vascular diseases. The findings of previous investigations suggest that, elevated serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels may have a pathophysiological character in the occurrence of atherosclerotic vascular disease (AVD) of the heart and brain. This study evaluated the association between serum uric acid (SUA) levels, serum lipid levels, serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels, and changes in ischemic cerebrovascular accident patients.Methods: All patients with Ischemic cerebrovascular accident age >50 years were included based on their clinical, laboratory, and radiological findings (including computed tomography (CT)/magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)) those admitted in our hospital. As control group 200 healthy individuals matched for sex and age were recruited from the same demographic area.Result: Multiple logistic regression analysis findings proposed four components as significant predictors in ischemic cerebrovascular accident (serum uric acid, serum ALP, LDL and HDL. In this study, it was found, that patients with ischemic cerebrovascular accident had significant difference (p<0.001) in serum uric acid and serum ALP than normal patients (non-ischemic cerebrovascular accident patients).Conclusions: Patients with ischemic cerebrovascular accident had significant difference (p<0.001) in SUA and serum ALP than normal patients (non-ischemic cerebrovascular accident patients). High SUA levels were observed to be associated significantly with ischemic stroke. On the basis of our study design, we cannot clarify that the elevated levels are the risk of ischemic stroke and it requires further studies.

Abstract Background Previous studies suggested that patients with symptomatic intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) of lumbar spine have reduced cross-sectional area (CSA) and functions of core muscles. However, reduced CSA and functions of core muscles have been observed not only in patients with symptomatic IDD but also in patients with other subgroups of low back pain (LBP). Thus, it is uncertain whether reduced CSA and functions of core muscles lead to IDD and LBP, or pain leads to reduced CSA and functions of core muscles in patients with symptomatic IDD. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the CSA and functions of core muscles between asymptomatic participants with and without IDD in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods Twenty asymptomatic participants (12 men and 8 women) participated in this study. Ten participants had asymptomatic IDD at L4–5. The others were healthy controls (without IDD at all levels of lumbar spine). The CSA of core muscles was measured using MRI. Maximal isometric trunk flexor strength and side bridge strength were measured by a Smart KEMA strength sensor. Trunk flexor endurance test, side bridge endurance test and plank endurance test were used to measure core endurance. Double legs loading test was used to measure core stability. Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the differences between two groups. Results There were no significant differences in core muscle functions between the two groups (p > 0.05). Moreover, there was no significant difference in CSA between the two groups (p > 0.05). Conclusions There was no significant difference in CSA and core muscle functions between asymptomatic participants with and without IDD. These findings indicate that a degenerative or bulging disc in asymptomatic individuals has little effect on CSA and functions of core muscles, especially in young age. Therefore, the general core endurance test or strength test could not differentiate asymptomatic people with and without IDD of lumbar spine. AbstractSerum uric acid (SUA) level has been suggested to be associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes and metabolic syndrome. However, little is known about the relationship between SUA and liver enzymes activity in the general population. The present study aimed to assess the relationship between SUA and serum liver enzymes in an adult population in Bangladesh. In this cross-sectional study, a total of 410 blood samples were collected from apparently healthy adults aged > 18 years. SUA, liver enzymes, lipid profile and other biochemical markers were measured in the collected samples by using standard methods. Multinomial logistic regression model was used to assess the relationship between SUA and elevated levels of liver enzymes among the participants. Overall, the prevalence of hyperuricemia was 30.1% with 32.2% in male and 18.6% in female participants. About 33% of the participants had at least one or more elevated levels of liver enzymes. The mean level of SUA was significantly higher in males (389.3 ± 96.9 µmol/L) than in the female (290.4 ± 89.8 µmol/L) subjects (p < 0.001). There was a significant difference in the mean levels of serum ALT and GGT between the male (34.5 ± 16.0 U/L and 26.7 ± 19.5 U/L, respectively) and female (25.0 ± 13.0 U/L and 19.5 ± 13.2 U/L, respectively) participants (p < 0.001 and p < 0.01, respectively). An increasing trend was observed in the mean levels of serum ALT and GGT across the SUA quartile groups (p < 0.001 and p < 0.01, respectively). SUA showed a positive and significant correlation with serum ALT (p < 0.001) and GGT (p < 0.01). In further statistical analysis after adjustment for potential confounders, SUA showed an independent and significant association with serum ALT and GGT in all regression models. In conclusion, SUA was strongly associated with serum levels of ALT and GGT after adjustment for potential confounders. More prospective studies are needed to clarify the complex relationship between SUA and liver enzymes in the general population.
