In this study, a cavitation model for propeller analysis was selected using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and the model was applied to the cavitating flow around the Potsdam Propeller Test Case (PPTC) propeller. The cavitating flow around the NACA 66 hydrofoil was analyzed to select a cavitation model suitable for propeller analysis among various cavitation models. The present and the experimental results were compared to select a cavitation model that would be applied to propeller cavitation analysis. Although the CFD results using the selected cavitation model showed limitations in estimating some of the foam cavitation and bubble cavitation identified in the experimental results, it was identified that foam cavitation and sheet cavitation around the tip were well simulated.

For decades, journal bearings have been designed based on the half-Sommerfeld equations. The semi-analytical solution of the conservation equations for mass and momentum leads to the pressure distribution along the journal. However, this approach admits negative values for the pressure, phenomenon without experimental evidence. To overcome this, negative values of the pressure are artificially substituted with the vaporization pressure. This hypothesis leads to reasonable results, even if for a deeper understanding of the physics behind the lubrication and the supporting effects, cavitation should be considered and included in the mathematical model. In a previous paper, the author has already shown the capability of computational fluid dynamics to accurately reproduce the experimental evidences including the Kunz cavitation model in the calculations. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results were compared in terms of pressure distribution with experimental data coming from different configurations. The CFD model was coupled with an analytical approach in order to calculate the equilibrium position and the trajectory of the journal. Specifically, the approach was used to study a bearing that was designed to operate within tight tolerances and speeds up to almost 30,000 rpm for operation in a gearbox.

This effort investigates advancing cavitation modeling relevant to computational fluid dynamics (CFD) through two strategies. The first aims to reformulate the cavitation models and the second explores adding liquid–vapor slippage effects. The first aspect of the paper revisits cavitation model formulations with respect to the Rayleigh–Plesset equation (RPE). The present approach reformulates the cavitation model using analytic solutions to the RPE. The benefit of this reformulation is displayed by maintaining model sensitivities similar to RPE, whereas the standard models fail these tests. In addition, the model approach is extended beyond standard homogeneous models, to a two-fluid modeling framework that explicitly models the slippage between cavitation bubbles and the liquid. The results indicate a significant impact of slip on the predicted cavitation solution, suggesting that the inclusion of such modeling can potentially improve CFD cavitation models. Overall, the results of this effort point to various aspects that may be considered in future CFD-modeling efforts with the goal of improving the model accuracy and reducing computational time.

Abstract In this paper, the unsteady cavitating turbulent flow around a marine propeller behind the hull is simulated by the k-ω SST turbulence model coupled with the Zwart cavitation model. Three systematic refined structured meshes around the hull and propeller have been generated to study the predicted cavitation patterns and pressure fluctuations. Numerical results indicate that the predicted transient cavitating flow behind the hull wake, including sheet cavitation and tip vortex cavitation, shows quasi-periodic feature and agrees fairly well with the available experimental data. The deviations of pressure fluctuations between experimental data and numerical results are much small. With mesh refining, the cavitation region and the magnitudes of the calculated pressure fluctuations increase, while the differences between two adjacent sets of grids become smaller. In addition, the uncertainty of the thrust coefficient obtained by Factor of Safety method is significantly small. Further, the interaction between the cavitation and the vortex by the relative vorticity transport equation is illustrated. Results show that the magnitude of stretching term is obviously larger than the other three terms, and the dilatation term and the baroclinic term both have an important influence on the generation of vortices.

A micronozzle was applied in nanoparticle deposition system (NPDS) for supersonic deposition. To determine whether suitable behavior of supersonic fluid can be produced or not, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) flow analysis was used. Ni particles were successfully deposited using the fabricated micronozzle in NPDS at room temperature. It was found that shorter micronozzle with larger side profile deposits wide and thick film compared to the deposition using long micronozzle with smaller side profile. These experimental results agree with the simulation results.

This paper presents design of aerodynamic downforce generating devices (front wing, rear wing and diffuser) to enhance the performance of the Formula Student Race Car using numerical and experimental studies. Numerical results using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies were primarily validated with the experimental results performed in the wind tunnel. It was concluded that the use of a downforce package can enhance the performance of the vehicle in the competition.

In this work, the commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), ANSYS-Fluent V.14.5 has been used to illustrate the effects of rudder and blade pitch on hydrodynamic performances of a propeller. At first, the characteristic curves of a container ship propeller are computed. Then, effects of rudder on hydrodynamic performances of the propeller in the both cases of the propeller with and without rudder have been investigated. The relationships between the blade pitch angle and the hydrodynamic performances of the selected referent propeller in this work having designed conditions as diameter of 3.65 m; speed of 200 rpm; average pitch of 2.459 m and the boss ratio of 0.1730. Using CFD, the characteristic curves of the marine propeller, pressure distribution, velocity distribution around propeller and the efficiency of the propeller have been shown. From the obtained results, the effects of rudder and blade pitch angle on hydrodynamic performances of the propeller have been evaluated.

A comprehensive study of the internal flow field for the prilling application in a perforated rotating bucket has been carried out. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is used to investigate the flow field of urea melt inside the perforated rotating bucket. The bucket is mounted at the top of the prilling tower. In prilling process, urea melt is sprayed by the perforated rotating bucket to produce the urea droplets, which falls down due to gravity. These drops fall down through a cooling medium and solidify into prills. The velocity field in the bucket is very important to study, as it has great effect on the heat and mass transfer performance in prilling process. ANSYS 14.0 CFD package is used to simulate and Design Modeler and Catia V5 are used for geometrical model of the perforated prilling bucket. Velocity distribution on different planes are obtained and discussed.

Abstract Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations are used to predict the flow-induced forcing in high-pressure multiphase pipe flow. Furthermore, empirical correlations from the literature is compared and validated against computational and experimental results. Based on the CFD results and in conjunction with the reference 6” (internal diameter (ID)) data, new scaling rules are proposed.

The cavitating flows around a highly skewed model marine propeller in both uniform flow and wake flow have been simulated by applying a mass transfer cavitation model based on Rayleigh–Plesset equation and k-ω shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model. From comparison of numerical results with the experiment, it is seen that the thrust and torque coefficients of the propeller are predicted satisfactory. It is also clarified from unsteady simulation of cavitating flow around the propeller in wake flow that the whole process of cavitating-flow evolution can be reasonably reproduced including sheet cavitation and tip vortex cavitation observed in the experiments. Furthermore, to study the effect of pressure fluctuation on the surrounding, pressure fluctuations induced by the cavitation as well as the propeller rotation are predicted at three reference positions above the propeller for comparison with the experimental data: The amplitudes of the dominant components corresponding to the first, second, and third blade passing frequencies were satisfactorily predicted. It is noted that the maximum difference of pressure fluctuation between the calculation and experiment reached 20%, which might be acceptable by usual engineering applications.

This paper deals with the application of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to the turbulent analysis of the Wells Turbine. The objectives of this work were twofold; firstly to develop and benchmark the 3D CFD model and then to use this model to analyse the airflow through the turbine. The model was analysed as fully turbulent compressible flow using the Fluent™ CFD code. The computational model was first benchmarked against previously published experimental and CFD data for two similar turbines. The computational model accurately predicted the non-dimensional torque and non-dimensional pressure drop, while the efficiency predictions were lower than the experimental results. Predicted location of turbine stall also corresponded well with experimental results. Potential causes for differences between the computational and experimental results are suggested. The computational model was then analysed at both high and low tip Mach number settings and also with and without the tip gap, and these results were discussed.
