How to improve the doctor-patient relationship has been a continuing topic in academia and management and there have been several attempts to utilize online communications to facilitate healthcare. The application of information technology to create an “Internet + medical care” platform has upended the traditional medical service model in China. As an example of the application of the Internet by the healthcare system, this paper investigates a mobile online appointment system used by hospitals. Data on system use came from questionnaires submitted by 225 patients and analyzed by the structural equation model method. The results showed that patients perceived the hospital’s online appointment system as an attempt at transparency to which they reacted positively. The patients’ perception of transparency promoted trust in the hospital and the doctors and positively affected their feelings of satisfaction, which, of course, improved the doctor-patient relationship. Patients’ perceptions of transparency, trust in the hospitals and doctors, and feelings of satisfaction played a partial mediator role between the availability of an online appointment system and better doctor-patient relationships. There were significant gender differences among patients in terms of their feelings of trust and satisfaction with the new appointment method and whether it really improved the doctor-patient relationship.

AbstractThe commonly occurring metaphors and models of the doctor–patient relationship can be divided into three clusters, depending on what distribution of power they represent: in the paternalist cluster, power resides with the physician; in the consumer model, power resides with the patient; in the partnership model, power is distributed equally between doctor and patient. Often, this tripartite division is accepted as an exhaustive typology of doctor–patient relationships. The main objective of this paper is to challenge this idea by introducing a fourth possibility and distribution of power, namely, the distribution in which power resides with neither doctor nor patient. This equality in powerlessness—the hallmark of “the age of bureaucratic parsimony”—is the point of departure for a qualitatively new doctor–patient relationship, which is best described in terms of solidarity between comrades. This paper specifies the characteristics of this specific type of solidarity and illustrates it with a case study of how Swedish doctors and patients interrelate in the sickness certification practice.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship of doctors’ job satisfaction with doctor-patient relationship and work-family conflict in China. The data came from a cross-sectional survey in Hubei province, which was part of China’s Fifth National Health Services Survey conducted in 2013. The survey in Hubei covered 54 secondary and tertiary general hospitals distributed in 20 counties. Of the 1080 questionnaires, 908 were included into our analysis. After surviving from reliability and validity tests, structural equation modeling was applied for further analysis with SPSS 20.0 and Mplus 7.0. The results showed that the average score of job satisfaction is 19.61 out of 30 points, indicating a relatively low level of doctors’ job satisfaction in Hubei province. Work-family conflict was found to have negative impact on doctors’ job satisfaction, and good doctor-patient relationship was found to have positive impact on their job satisfaction. Therefore, hospital administrators and policy makers should make effort to design and implement strategies that focus on meliorating doctor-patient relationship and balancing doctors’ work and family life to further improve their job satisfaction.

The aim of this study was to investigate the mediator role of moral disengagement in the relationship between gender roles and dating violence. Participants were 425 university students [310 (72.9%) female, 115 (27.1%) male, Mage = 20.68 years, SD = 2.21] who completed questionnaires package involving the Gender Roles Attitudes Scale, the Attitudes toward Dating Violence Scales, and the Moral Disengagement Scale. The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. A bootstrapping analysis was conducted in order to determine any indirect effects. The results showed that gender roles predicted moral disengagement and dating violence negatively, and that moral disengagement predicted dating violence positively. It was further found that the structural equation model that proposed that gender roles had a direct and an indirect effect through moral disengagement on dating violence was confirmed. The results of the study were discussed in the light of relevant literature, and suggestions for future studies were made.

Background: The beneficial relationship between physical fitness and cognitive performance is affected and modulated by a wide diversity of factors that seem to be more sensitive during the development stage, particularly during early adolescence. This study aimed to examine the role of physical fitness considering the multivariate association between age, health-related quality of life (HRQOL), school vulnerability index (SVI), body mass index z-score (BMIz), physical activity, and sleep problems with the cognitive performance in boys and girls.Method: Participants were 1,196 adolescents aged 10–14 years (50.7% of boys) from Chile. Three physical fitness components and eight cognitive tasks were measured. BMIz was determined using growth references by age and sex, whereas questionaries were used to assess sleep problems, physical activity, and HRQOL. SVI was established according to the score given by the Chilean Government to educational establishments. We performed a structural equation model (SEM) to test multivariate associations among study' variables by sex. Results: Fitness was positively associated with boys' and girls' cognitive performance (β = 0.23 and β = 0.17; p = 0.001, respectively). Moreover, fitness presented a significant mediator role in the relationships between BMIz, SVI, and physical activity with cognitive performance (indirect effect). Additionally, SVI showed a negative association both direct and indirect effect in all three fitness components and all cognitive tasks, being this relationship stronger in girls than in boys. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that physical fitness and all its components play a crucial mediator role in the associations between several factors associated with adolescents' cognitive performance. Thereby, educational and health strategies should prioritise improving physical fitness through physical activity. They also should address other factors such as school vulnerability, obesity, and the early gender gap in a comprehensive approach boosting cognitive performance among early adolescents.Trial registration: Research Registry (ID: researchregistry5791).

In the present study, the the impact of work plateau on intention to remain at work with the mediating role of organizational commitment has been studied. The statistical population of this research is all employees of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad. The research method is descriptive-survey. According to statistics of personnel management office, the number of employees is 1100 in 2017. In order to determine the sample size, due to the limited population, Morgan table was used and 285 people were selected from population through random sampling. In order to collect the data, Alan and Meyer (1990) questionnaire was used to assess organizational commitment, a researcher-made questionnaire was used to investigate the intention to remain at job and Miliaman's questionnaire (1992) was used to investigate career plateauing. The validity of these three questionnaires has been confirmed by experts. Reliability of the questionnaire is confirmed by Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 86%, 91% and 84%, respectively. The statistical methods used in this research to test the hypotheses are T value and structural equation modeling. Structural equation model in this study was determined using Liserl software, according to which the content plateau and structural plateau, considering the mediator role of organizational commitment, has a negative and significant impact on employees' intention to remain at work.

Decreased quality of life is a major challenge among women living with breast cancer due to treatment effects and other psychosocial comorbidities. However, shared decision making and doctor–patient relationship have been linked to improved quality of life, but the mechanism linking shared decision making and quality of life is poorly understood. This study therefore examined both the direct and indirect influences of shared decision making on quality of life through doctor–patient relationship among 205 women living with breast cancer in Ghana with a mean age of 52.49 years. Using a cross-sectional design, participants were administered questionnaires which measured quality of life, doctor–patient relationship, and shared decision making. Results showed that shared decision making had significant indirect influence on overall quality of life via doctor–patient relationships ( b = 4.69, 95% confidence interval = [0.006, 9.555]). Shared decision making had a significant effect on doctor–patient relationships ( b = 7.63, t = 6.76, p < .001) but no significant direct effect on quality of life ( b = 2.72, t = 0.510, p = .61). Findings suggest that shared decision making results in improved doctor–patient relationships which probably lead to better quality of life among women living with breast cancer. These findings underscore the need for increased patient involvement in medical decisions to improve interpersonal relationships and consequently quality of life.

BACKGROUND Since the 2009 medical reform in China, the doctor-patient relationship seems to be an increasingly serious issue. And with the new media era, Weibo is one of the most important platforms for building the doctor image. However, no studies have focused on how China official media Weibo reports on doctor-patient issues. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to study the presentation of doctor image on People's Daily Weibo and how it affects the direction of the doctor-patient relationship. METHODS This study used a content analysis method and collected data from 01 January 2016 to 31 December 2018 on People's Daily Weibo. Through the characteristics, these postings were categorized into four-doctor images. RESULTS A total of 216 postings about the doctor image were collected on People's Daily Weibo. It was reported 122 postings on positive doctor image, up to 56%, while the number of negative doctor image postings is 15, accounting for only 7%. 44 postings about victim doctor image, accounting for 21%. There are about 25 medical disturbances. People’s Daily Weibo has reported 35 postings that have a neutral image of doctors, accounting for 16%. CONCLUSIONS People’s Daily Weibo has shaped four-doctor media images in the past three years. Moreover, it has mostly reported postings with a rigorous attitude, but some also exaggerate the facts leading to unreal. People’s Daily, the official Chinese media, actively embraces new media by using Weibo to shape doctor media images to influence the harmony of doctor-patient relationships.
