We describe the synthesis and characterization of cobalt(II) and nickel(II) coordination compounds of 4[N-(furan-2’-aldimine)amino]antipyrine thiosemicarbazone (FFAAPTS) and 4[N-(4'-nitrobenzalidene) amino]antipyrine thiosemicarbazone (4'-NO2BAAPTS). All the isolated compounds have the general composition MX2(L)(H2O) (M = Co2+or Ni2+; X = Cl, Br, NO3, NCS or CH3COO; L = FFAAPTS or 4'-NO2BAAPTS) and M(ClO4)2(L)2(M = Co2+or Ni2+; L = FFAAPTS or 4'-NO2BAAPTS). Infrared spectral studies indicate that both the thiosemicarbazones coordinate in their neutral form and they act as {N,N,S} tridentate chelating ligands. Room temperature magnetic measurements and electronic spectral studies suggest the distorted octahedral geometries of the prepared complexes. Thermogravimetric studies are also reported and the possible structures of the complexes are proposed. Antibacterial and antifungal properties of these metal-coordination compounds have also been studied.

The synthesis, structure, and physical properties of a series of mononuclear complexes viz. [Cu(L)2] 1, [CuL2(CH3O)2] 2 and [Zn(L)2] 3 (where L = 1-Phenyl-3-methyl-4-benzoyl-5-pyrazolone (PMBP)) are presented. The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and electronic spectroscopy (1 and 2), magnetic measurements at room temperature (1 and 2) and thermogravimetric analysis. The structures of all the three complexes were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The coordination geometry around complexes CuL2 (1) and ZnL2 (3) is slightly distorted square planar while the geometry around Cu(II) of [Cu(L)2(CH3O)2] (2) is distorted octahedral with four oxygen atoms of two PMBP ligand occupying the equatorial positions and two methanol molecules occupying the two axial positions.

Bismuth(III) phenoxides have been synthesized by electrochemical reactions of 1-naphthol, 2-naphthol, 4-aminophenol, 2-nitrophenol, 4-nitrophenol, 2-hydroxybenzoic acid,p-cresol, phenol, resorcinol, 2-tert-butylphenol and 2-tert-butyl-4-methoxyphenol at sacrificial bismuth anode and inert platinum cathode using tetrabutylammonium chloride as supporting electrolyte. The coordination compounds of these phenols with 1, 10-phenanthroline and 2, 2ʼ-bipyridyl have also been synthesized electrochemically. The solid products separated in the anode compartment have been isolated and characterized by elemental analysis and infrared spectral studies. Current efficiencies of these reactions are quite high.

A series of adducts of p-ethylphenyldithiocarbonates of copper(II) [(p-C2H5C6H4OCS2)2Cu] with ethyl pyridines and chloro pyridines have been synthesized in 1:2 molar ratio. They were characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic susceptibility and molar conductance measurements, infrared, electronic, electron spin resonance and mass spectroscopy, NMR and thermogravimetric analysis. In addition, antifungal studies of these adducts were also performed. The results revealed that the adducts have 1:2 stoichiometry, non-electrolytic and paramagnetic at room temperature. On the basis of spectral studies, a distorted octahedral geometry is proposed around copper(II) ion. ESR studies depicted elongated axial symmetry of Cu(II)adducts with nitrogen donors. Moreover, the adducts also showed potential antifungal activity against Fusarium oxysporium.

New metal complexes of Mg(II), VO(II), Mn(II), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Pd(II) with cyanex 301(L) i.e., bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) dithiophosphinic acid were synthesized. The complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductivity, molecular mass determination, magnetic measurements, infrared and electronic spectral studies. The prepared metal complexes have the compositions: 2. [MgL2].H2O, 3. [VOL2], 4. K[MnL3].H2O, 5. [FeL3], 6. K[CoL3].H2O, 7. K[NiL3], 8. K[CuL3] and 9. [PdL2]. The complexes 2, 3 and 9 are assumed to have tetrahedral, square pyramidal and square planar geometries, respectively but the complexes 4 - 8 are octahedral based on experimental data. From magnetic measurements the complexes 2 and 9 are found to be diamagnetic and others are paramagnetic. Measured molar conductance showed that the complexes 2, 3, 5 and 9 are non-electrolytes and rest are electrolytes. Besides, some complexes have shown good antibacterial and antifungal activities. Abstract A new mixed-ligand complex of copper(II) with 1,10-phenanthroline and 2-methyllactate was prepared. [Cu(HmL)2(phen)] ·2H2O (where HmL = monodeprotonated 2-methyllactic acid) was characterized by elemental analysis, IR, electronic and EPR spectroscopy, magnetic measurements at room temperature, thermogravimetric analysis and X-ray diffractometry. The copper atom is in a tetragonally distorted octahedral environment and the 2-methyllactato ligand is bidentately chelating. The presence of lattice water molecules mediates the formation of a three-dimensional network.

Electrochemical reactions of bromoethane, 1-bromopropane, 1-chlorobutane and chlorobenzene have been carried out in acetonitrile at sacrificial antimony anode using tetrabutylammonium chloride as supporting electrolyte. The products isolated from the anode compartment have been characterized by elemental analysis and infrared spectral studies and are identified as organoantimony compounds. Coordination compounds of same have been synthesized with ligand (1,10-phenanthroline and 2,2'-bipyridyl). All these reactions proceed with high current efficiencies.

Five new ternary metal complexes containing imidazole and glycylglycine or amino acid have been prepared and characterized by proton magnetic resonance and infrared spectral studies. Seven new binary metal complexes have also been prepared and studied. The isolation of Cd(imidazole)6Cl2•H2O and Ni(imidazole)6-Cl2•4H2O provides evidence that the coordination number of these metal ions to imidazole in the solid state is six. The visible spectra of the Ni(II) complexes of amino acid and imidazole show that all these are octahedral in aqueous solution.

Purpose: Polymeric nanosuspension was prepared from an inert polymer resin (Eudragit® RL100) with the aim of improving the availability of sulfacetamide at the intraocular level to combat bacterial infections. Methods: Nanosuspensions were prepared by the solvent displacement method using acetone and Pluronic® F108 solution. Drug to polymer ratio was selected as formulation variable. Characterization of the nanosupension was performed by measuring particle size, zeta potential, Fourier Transform infrared spectra (FTIR), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Powder X-Ray Diffraction (PXRD), drug entrapment efficiency and in vitro release. In addition, freeze drying, redispersibility and short term stability study at room temperature and at 40C were performed. Results: Spherical, uniform particles (size below 500 nm) with positive zeta potential were obtained. No significant chemical interactions between drug and polymer were observed in the solid state characterization of the freeze dried nanosuspension (FDN). Drug entrapment efficiency of the selected batch was increased by changing the pH of the external phase and addition of polymethyl methacrylate in the formulation. The prepared nanosuspension exhibited good stability after storage at room temperature and at 40C. Sucrose and Mannitol were used as cryoprotectants and exhibited good water redispersibility of the FDN. Conclusion: The results indicate that the formulation of sulfacetamide in Eudragit® RL100 nanosuspension could be utilized as potential delivery system for treating ocular bacterial infections.

By combining the reflection-absorption infrared spectral studies with the peak fitting analysis we determined the type of the silicon oxides present in polydimethylsiloxane layers obtained on germanium and aluminium substrates in corona discharges. We have also evidenced that the dependence of silicon oxides density on the corona discharge current intensity is related to the existence of a concurrent anodizing process occurring at the polymer/Al substrate interface. The morphology of the Al substrate surface investigated by scanning electron microscopy proved that the anodizing process occurs.

Raman and infrared spectra have been recorded for polycrystalline samples of TIClO3, TIBrO3, and T1IO3 at room temperature. The vibrational spectra of these rhombohedral (R3m, C3v5) crystals are closely related to each other, and to single crystal Raman spectra of isomorphous RbClO3 and KBrO3 reported by others. Spectral assignments are made. The uni-molecular unit cell yields no correlation field splitting, but lack of a center of inversion leads to TO/LO splitting of each active mode in these uniaxial piezoelectric crystals. Relationships between the thallium(I) halates and the NaN3 and MXY3 perovskite structures are considered.
